Brad Delp had one of the quintessential rock voices of all time. Along with Steve Perry and Lou Gramm, he just absolutely kills it on every song for the first 3 albums, he's a legend for sure.

This song is the hidden gem of this album. The melody of the vocals is amazing followed by the mix of electric and acoustic guitar leading to the crazy organ solo that is backed with constant cymbal crashes. And then, that guitar solo played on guitars with different tones, pick scratches and dual guitars played in harmony on its own set of chords that are different from the rest of the song. Best outro solo ever period. Foreplay/Longtime is what you need to listen next. It will blow you away. The song is nothing short of epic.

"I'm getting emotional." Damn straight. The guitar work is some of the best ever recorded. Boston was one of the first bands to harmonize their guitar leads, and it is such a beautiful sound.
And just how good is it? Another popular TH-camr Rick Beato lists it as the best outro guitar solo of all time:

If you listen closely to the organ solo in the middle at the end it goes up in pitch. In 1976 organs could not do that. Tom Scholz literally put his finger on the recording tape and slowed it down to make the organ sound like it was changing pitch. That's pure producing genius

I was in high school in Maine when this came out, and I saw them twice in the 70s; I _still_ get emotional listening to this. All the first album is great, but the 2nd album brings "A Man I'll Never Be" (the archetypal power ballad), the title track "Don't Look Back," and "Don't Be Afraid" as a pure rave.

Brad Delp is easily one of the greatest Rock vocalists of any era. I’ve loved his voice ever since I was a very young kid in the late 70s discovering all the great Rock they were playing on the radio. He ranks in my personal top 5 vocalists ever. I was lucky enough to see him perform with Boston back in the mid 90s and it was definitely a show to remember. I have a fellow musician friend who used to live on the east coast and he was a friend of Brad’s. Word is he was a very kind and special soul who was dealt more than his fair share of heartaches and set backs. I wish he was still here with us today. The man truly was a gem. May he Rest In Peace.
Oh, by the way… the second Boston album, Don’t Look Back, is also very good. Some say not as good as the first but, I disagree with that. It’s every bit as good. It’s worth checking out… every song. Glad to hear you’re going to do the rest of this incredible album. Smokin’ the one you will definitely love but, again, all the songs are so so good!

I'd recommend going to the two "kickin' yer ass" rock songs on the album: Rock & Roll Band, and Smokin'. Rock & Roll Band always makes me smile, because Boston wasn't even a band when it was written and first recorded, yet in a simple song Tom S created a really cool rock and roll cliche fictional history for the band that didn't yet exist. Both it and Smokin' are "clench your toes or they'll blow yer socks off" songs.

A long deep dive into Boston. You are just getting started. Not a bad song among their first 3 albums. Boston's first was considered a masterpiece by everyone and will go down as one of the best debut's in music history. Their next albums were unfairly compared to this one. My favorite Boston song is on their second album (Don't Look Back 1978) the song is "A Man I'll Never Be" Please do that one and the title track "Don't Look Back" which was the first single. And please do "Amanda" from the (Third Stage album 1986). Thanks and God Bless

    • @michaela8706
      @michaela8706 ปีที่แล้ว

Just some tidbits. Tom Scholz put the first album together in his basement and played all the instruments himself except for drums. He would send everyone else to the record company studio as a head fake while he secretly did his thing at home. Then he brought the drummer in and Brad Delp's wonderful vocals to complete the album. Then he brought the masters to the record company and they had no choice, it was a masterpiece. Tom was an M.I.T. graduate and obvious genius. He engineered and developed much of the electronic equipment including amplifiers and the "Rockman" guitar pedals that give the music that Boston sound. They were so proud that they never used synthesizers that they would put that on the inside of their album jackets "No Synthesizers Used". After their second album there was a copywrite issue with a former co-manager and the court battle delayed the band in making their third album. Then CBS records sued Tom Scholz for breach of contract which delayed it further. Scholz eventually won and moved the band to MCA records. I got to see Boston on the 1986 tour in Baton Rouge. I had standing room on the floor and I stood about 5 people deep in the middle of the stage. It was awesome.

Brings back such wonderful memories from a time long ago for sure. Boston was a great band during their brief time. Unfortunately we will never hear any new vocals from Brad Delp. He committed suicide in 2007 by carbon monoxide poisoning. The struggle is real. If you know someone who is suffering from depression, try to get them the help they need. Mr. Delp was an extremely talented vocalist who by all outward appearances had everything anyone could want. In his suicide note he referred to himself as "a lonely soul". Sad ending indeed.

    **MASTERPIECE**
Yes this whole album is one big masterpiece from start to finish!!!! Yes it was recorded and produced in secret in Tom Scholz's basement (wasn't a normal basement like you and I have LOL was a full blown professional recording studio) However there's a reason it sounds so much better than any other recording of it's genre, he worked on the production for....5 YEARS!!!!! You can make Mary Had A Little Lamb played on one string sound like Mozart with 5 years of production LOL Trust me I'm not downplaying the album at all, just stating a fact. I feel as tho the music world would be a very different place without this album existing. Scholz is just an amazing musician and innovator. Mostly everything on this album is played by him except for the drums (I believe) and the vocals. Except for the last track "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" which was the only song to feature all the members of the assembled "touring" band and only song to be recorded in the actual record companies studios. Just to think it only cost a couple of thousand bucks to record and sold over 17 MILLION copies!!!!! F-ing incredible!!!!
    Peace

The entire album is close to perfection 🎶❣ Cllassic rock stations were amazing. Styx, ELO come to mind also. Kansas, Chicago, oh so many...

Tom Scholz plays all guitars, bass and keyboards on Hitch a ride. Written, recorded and produced by Tom Scholz in his basement studio. Brad Delp does all vocals.

Boston is just amazing. I grew up listening to Boston and you honestly never get sick of listening to the whole album over and over. Incredible music, incredible lyrics and always they take you on a journey. Seriously, you should (even after you do each reaction) just put on the original album and listen to it in its entirety. Put down the lights and enjoy! Pick any.. .just go in order if you want. thanks so much for the amazing reactions and for letting me relive my youth!

If you'll notice at the top of the spaceship over boston there's a dome under and in that dome is the skyline of Boston

clinical/major depression is a real and serious issue that effects more people than realized. Brad Delp the lead vocalist of this band is a major example. RIP Brad. we all need to be aware and put aside the stigmas about mental health.

My favorite song! The solo is a dual. Both played by Tom Scholz himself, before the band formed.
