    I worked for Boston from 1975-1978.
    I used to move the equipment from the truck to be set up in the studio.
    It was right down the street from where I grew up. It was called the Music Complex on Fresh Pond Parkway in Cambridge, Ma. Some of the heaviest equipment I've ever lifted in my life! Probably because Tommy built half of it in his Watertown basement. Just to let you know, Tommy's last name is pronounced...
    "Sholts" Great reviews man, I've watched them all. And thanks for giving Brad his props for his vocals. As great as he was a vocalist, he was an even better human being. God bless Bradley. RIP💕
    (not sure if you're aware of this, but Boston lost out for "Best New Artist" at the 1976 Grammy Awards to the "Starland Vocal Band" for that cheesy, ridiculous song "Afternoon Delight". When that was announced, you could hear a huge "gasp" in the crowd. People couldn't believe it. We all thought Boston would "clean up" at least 4-5 Grammy's. For sure we thought "More Than A Feeling" would win "Best New Song". I think Debbie Boone won or someone like that. Just a terrible snub. Most of us got up and walked out. But not the band. They had too much class! We went down the street, found a club, and got hammered until the band finally showed up.)

      Yeah they did get snubbed by the industry...because they didn't really toe the line, did they? :-) They showed them how its done, and arrogant business people can't stand that. They didn't need the awards though.. the people turned out!!!

    You could make a case that Tom Scholz wasn't "checking all the classic rock boxes" -- he was inventing them.

  • @charlesgervais4673
    @charlesgervais4673 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    Tom Scholz had a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. He basically played every instrument and experimented with mixing and recording techniques. On this debut album, Tom played lead guitars, rhythm guitars, acoustic guitar, special effects guitar, bass, organ, clavinet and percussion. He also engineered and produced the album and wrote 7 of the 8 songs.

      Jim Masdea played most of the drums for the demo but Tom did pretty much everything else than the vocals.

    • @Fakename70
      @Fakename70 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brewswillis9783
      That demo was so professionally done that the band and label scrapped plans for Eddie Kramer to produce the debut. That’s how Kramer ended up working with KISS instead.

    • @kens32052
      @kens32052 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tom also made his own AMPS.

    • @ptournas
      @ptournas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually he played all except the drums on the demo, which were played by Jim Masdea. Epic wanted it all recorded in a studio, and assigned John Boylan as producer. Tom wanted to re-record it all in his home studio. He was able to convince John who agreed and gave him control over the recording and co-production credit. But he did oversee the process.
      There were times when John stepped in during the process. When he realized Tom didn't know how to record the acoustic guitar properly he flew a recording engineer in from LA to Tom's Watertown basement studio to teach him microphone techniques for recording the acoustic guitar. Tom did record basically a copy of the demo, but it wasn't all done in the basement studio. Tom and the band flew to LA to finish the recording and final mix in the studio.
      In LA, John continued to allow Tom pretty much full control, though he did have the sound engineers show Tom the proper microphone placement for recording the drums when the tracks were not coming out very well and he stepped in during the final mix when Tom kept drowning out the vocals with the guitars.
      All of Sib Hashian's drum tracks and Brad Delp's vocals were recorded in LA, as was the song Rock and Roll Band, with Fran Sheehan on bass and Barry Goudreau on lead guitar, although in this song Tom had managed to sneak in Jim Masdea's drum track from the demo.
      The whole band also played on Foreplay/Long Time and Let Me Take You Home Tonight, which Brad Delp also played acoustic guitar on. Those songs had been recorded in the sessions at Tom's house. Tom did play on all the songs (except drums and vocals), but those were the tracks that the others played on also. So no, he didn't play every instrument except the drums on the whole album, the others also played on about one third of the running time of the album.

    The production on this track was phenomenal. Note that this was recorded in 1975, so it's all analog. That effect near the end of the instrumental, where the organ note goes up in tone, was achieved by Scholz manipulating the tape with his finger. This album embodies everything that's great about Classic Rock.

To us, it definitely was referencing to smoking Mary Jane, and hey, that was alright, lol! Then when they went on the road they hide the rest of the band to do live shows. This one one of a handful of albums that came out in the 70's that were just monsters - practically every song on these albums was released as a single that generally did extremely well. "Boston", by Boston, "Hotel California" by The Eagles, "Foreigner" by Foreigner, "Rumors" by Fleetwood Mac, "Saturday Night Fever" by the Bee-Gees, all just killer albums.
    These weren't necessarily their best albums (although they're certainly contenders) and there were a number of great albums released by other bands during this really fertile decade. But you can do an album-listen to any of these and be well-rewarded.

And I am one of the 17 mil who bought the record.
