Been spinning the roller for years to clean it. I just cut off the metal of an old brush handle at the last 90 degree bend so I had a straight roller holder. This clamps in the drill well enough. Some good ideas for other bits but the world has more than enough plastic. Admire the drive to think of different solutions though. All the best.
Professional painter for 30 years here in UK. I think your coned roller spinner is a great idea. Better than the full length internal cage type of spinner cleaners. Shame you do not ship to UK.
I liked it when you said you didn't have to dirty up your sink or your lawn. Cool inventions too. For caulk I have used thick gauge nails, foil, and even tape. 4 years back was the first time I saw caulk tube caps at Ace hardware. The problem with any of these methods though is every time I would need to use the tube again it had dried up.So when I use caulk now I prefer too use it up so I don't have too store it. If I don't need alot I like getting those little tubes.
U Haul has a roll of plastic wrap available to wrap furniture in moving; it's about 16 inches wide and the roll is very long. I wrap the roller several revolutions with the roller still on the frame and twist the ends for a very tight seal. This has worked very well when applying elastomeric roofing, where you will do as many a 5 coats on each of 5 successive days. 1 1/4" rollers are expensive and instead of buying 5 roller covers, you need only one. Additionally, with elastomeric roofing, it would take an eternity to clean the roller of the excessively thick liquid. Of course this works for all painting, where you will return the next day for another coat.
I clean my roller with a pistol nozzle on the end of the garden hose. Lay the bucket on its side, stick the roller in the bucket, and hit it with the high power nozzle flow. Take off your watch and glasses until you get the hang of it. The roller will spin up much faster than it will go with the drill, sling the paint off, and spin it dry.
WOW! I love to paint & I struggle so much with roller cleaning !!Great great ideas!! Thanks!! I usually put a nail or screw in the top of tubes to keep it from leaking. I like the idea you showed!! Lover your ideas!!
Something funny. You showed your homemade PVC storage tube for the small roller. I made one like that and I drilled a hole in each cap and put a length of stretch paracord to keep things together. I made it for my badger hair shave brush. I had it in my carry on and when my suitcase went through the x-ray the whole line was stopped and redirected and 5 different people came out and finally they showed me the screen and wow...it looked like a pipe bomb. Good idea using your cordless.
your inventions are AWESOME - I soooo relate to the determination to find a better solution to these problems, and I love what you've come up with. I can only imagine the prototyping and redesigns. thanks for sharing and inspiring.
For latex caulk, I use a silicone caulking cap. The trick is to put a little water inside the cap before you put it on. 1 1/2 yrs later caulk still works.
For sealing caulk tubes, I tape a "finger" cut from a latex glove onto the end of the tube. I pump a little caulk into it just to plug it. Works great.
Thank you, Sir. You have been very helpful to me and so many others over the years. I think I speak for many when I say that you are sincerely appreciated.
Had rentals for decades. I just used a plastic grocery bag wrapped tightly over the roller head without removing it from the handle. Stick it in the bag, hold the excess bag at the metal rod of the handle and spin the head to remove the air. Then stick it in the refrigerator. It will last well over a month. If you take it out to use it, change out the bag to a fresh one to avoid the potential of crumbs getting on the roller. The fridge is the key! I use AC foil tape on my caulk tubes. Works pretty well as you can squeeze out all the air by smashing the tape and air can't bleed through foil tape like it does with masking tape. It's best to fold a little section over on the end of the piece of tape so you can unwrap the tape easier later. If you forget to do that, you will probably tear the tape up removing it but with the fold, you can reuse the same piece of tape 3 to 4 times.
@@DYI I was fortunate to be painting in empty rentals. My wife would ban me too! I had to buy my own garage toaster oven to heat PVC! The struggle is real! Lol
@@mikeconroy2651 Even I wouldn't want to make toast in an oven used to heat PVC. We all have enough plastics in our bodies without that. Just curious: Why do you heat PVC?
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY , you are a true pioneer. You see a problem, and you don't let it go until you have a solution. After watching what you have created I thought if you wanted to go even further, you could make the spindle on the roller detachable ( quick release ) and then have it hook straight to your drill . This would also allow you to make a stand that goes over the paint can so you could do the initial paint cleaning right back into the paint can .
i bought a tube similar to what you made to store your wet roller in that i found on amazon that is for tubes. do have to remove them from the caulking gun. $8 each I think
I do caulking before I paint. It helps me cut that straight line. I'm interested in those caps for the caulk tube's. Looks like they would work really well.
If you are going to be using your roller again up till a couple of weeks later, there are two easy ways to preserve your roller set-up. First, wet your roller as if you’re going to roll, leave frame on the screen in the 5 gallon bucket, take a kitchen waste bag and cover the top of the bucket, tape around the bag. Second is to follow the same process but snap the lid on the bucket (without the bag) with the frame handle sticking thru the capped hole in the lid, then wrap a wet rag around the handle that’s protruding.
I love your ideas and that your actually doing something with them. I know what it's like to be bombarded by constant innovation ideas while working only I just make them and put em in the tool box thinking about why more people don't do the same, or worse, just think about it and it stays up in my head. Worst thing is when you finally see your big idea take off only it's by somebody else years later and then you sit back looking like dude that was totally my idea 5, 10, 20 years ago! I keep thinking lately how great would be if there was a company that you would go to with the idea and they would help you get it off the ground. A reputable well intentioned one that's not looking to just make money off of you. Imagine if there was a platform where people could go just to brainstorm and then actually make these innovations and inventions happen, how much further we could be as a society! I mean, how many people have awesome ideas everyday but they just stay up in their head because they don't have either the drive or know how to make it happen. More often than not when you do have an idea you'll tell people and they just tell you why it won't work, then years later you see that idea working great, under somebody else's name 😒. By the way if you're reading this and you and this far in the comment, what kind of printer are you using to be printing out that much stuff most things are usually slow is shit and you got a lot of shit lol also, what kind of money is it costing in wasted while I shouldn't say wasted but... practice attempts, And can you reuse those practice attempts again like break down the plastics or whatever it is and feed it back into the machine?
The cleaning a paint roller with a garden hose I found in mid century popular mechanics or science on the wordless cartoonish page, hints in every issue. Make the paint cleaner spinner strong and good for 3/8 chucks. Threaded rod or thread a rod with a couple nut to fit into the chuck. McMaster Carr list 5/16 hex for 4-40 6-32, 8-32, 10-32 The rod goes through the plastic spinner whole length, with big washers on the ends putting the plastic in compression when tightened. A lot stronger.
Just ordered your paint roller cleaner, but I think if you created a stand to hold the paint roller attachment/cleaner after spinning/cleaning a paint roller to let air dry would be a great addition to your system. If the stand could hold up to 3 rollers, you could increase the sale of the paint roller attachment/cleaner.
I’ve kept rollers for up to a month in the fridge with just cling film wrap. When I start a job I take a new roller, put in the fridge at the end of each painting session and then bin it when the job is done. Rollers are cheap and disposable so it’s a waste of my time cleaning them when I can be sat relaxing with a beer at the end of the day
You need to get that roller spinner to market. Ive tried to make my from an old cage but was but was not centered well enough and distroyed itself.. During the summer, i use the garden hose in the back yard and just spin it on the cage. No bucket you just need to angle the roller sonyou dont get wet but yours seems to work very well.
I used to clean my rollers. PITA. Just wrap the roller and tray in a plastic bag until you're done painting and then toss it. I'm too old and time is too dear to screw with it.
I don't spend any time cleaning rollers. I buy paint in 5 gal buckets and leave the roller in the re-sealed bucket. Can go for years. Of course, I wear a disposable glove to remove it and put it back on my handle. I am not the first to come up with this method. I was doing some painting at our church and using an existing 5 gal bucket. I noticed a roller floating in it when I opened it. I figured someone dropped it in by accident, but that the light bulb idea hit me that it was intentional. I have been doing it ever since.
If that hex wears off of the spinner - drill it out and use a threaded rod with a coupler nut to insert into your drill chuck. Could hot press one in, instead
I use an old roller cage straighten the bend and spin it in the drill inside a 4” waste pipe bit wobbly but does the trick eventually will wreck my drill but i do like your coned hex bit insert much better 👍🏽
Great ideas...you might to consider getting them patented and, going on one of those "Shark shows" to get money so you can mass produce and sell to the big "Box stores."
How about a link for the book you show near the end, "How to choose a contractor for your next home improvement project"? I've tried Google and Amazon and didn't find it.
Hello. Can you please do a different patching like a California patch, backing board, using mesh tape as a backing and other patching you Can think of. And do a testing on it to see how strong each of them, like a simple punch or some pulling weight. I a diy been using California patch so i can just carry 1 plaster board because some house have different size plasterboard thickness. So carry 1 plasterboard using backing board won't work. But if you make a video so i can decide which patch to go for and it doesn't hurt if i need to carry 2 different plasterboard.
You need to add an O ring to the lid. O rings have two methods for identification but are not too complicated. A retaining land might not be necessary.
Just an idea but you could slice the lid or the end of the tube with a slit to put an o-ring so it can be leakproof. I don't know how much a difference would make but it's just an idea
or with latex based paints just rinse the roller off and throw it in the washing machine by itself. That gets it so clean the carpet backing on the roller is even paint free like a brand new roller . And no the washing machine does not get paint all over it. Try it !, just make sure the wife is not home.😊
Actually someone designed a paint roller cleaner that took about 15 seconds to completely clean a roller on TV for sale, it worked so well that some paint roller company bought the rights and took it off the market, probably so they could stay in business.
11/8/24..hey (KiltSkirt) 'MudMan'..Hello from New Orleans area..much enjoyed your inventions for painting/roller cleanup & storage. Lots of practical common sense innovations! A+✅️💪 ..since you mentioned 3D printing...hey give us a video on your machine & supplies & work bench/set-up & cabinet or mobile cart & work top area/size etc. Anxious to see/hear your comments on the trial & errors before you landed on your present machine & system.. & where can we viewers go get your type machine? 👍👍👍✅️ A+ video today! Great 'studio' lighting, sound/microphone 👍& also your EZ-2-listen conversational style. No BS with you just plain talk to all us blue collar guys...with yesterday's paint still on our fingernails...stay safe & carry on!👍🍺😊
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY what I meant was, where do you dump it? I usually toss the paint roller because once it's dry it's a small piece of solid trash. If I clean it in buckets, I've now got 10 gallons of thinned paint. Isn't that risky for my plumbing?
Your spinner tool has a male connector for inserting into the drill chuck. You might consider designing one with a female connector that accepts, say, a 1/2" socket driver bit. This would allow a thicker neck on that segment. I see that you tested that and I suspect you ruled out a smaller male connection because it was too weak. Going female there might be stronger still.
I finally came up with a way to make that top section really strong. I probably broke 20 of those shafts testing out the strength of various printing configurations
just take the "cage" off of a paint roller frame and put a bolt and nut through one end of the "cage" and put the end of the bolt in the drill chuck, but still three buckets and all that water you have to get rid of somewhere too much work..... or just put the roller cover in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer
yeap you 'll need 10 gallons of water to clean one roller because there is no way you can use that dirty water to clean another roller, so let's say you have 3 or 4 rollers to clean you'll need 30 to 40 gallons of water to clean them not to mention you'll need to carry around 3 five gallons buckets don't know if it's really more efficient to just wash the roller on a splash sink or just wrap it up in plastic to be cleaned somewhere else and use new ones also to remove the roller from a handle I just use a small scraper to hit the bottom of the roller and it come lose then i pull it off !
Actually it’s only about 4 gallons each bucket and I’m sure you can clean 4-6 without changing the water (if you scrape most of the paint off first like you should ) as the 2nd bucket stays pretty clean. The buckets in this example had been used 2-3 times from me testing it. And after the video I dirtied up another roller and cleaned it in the same water because I needed the dirty roller for the thumbnail.
Just put a set in the cart. Great tool at a great price. The Chinese will steal your idea but you should patent it anyway if you have not done so already.
Never had any luck cleaning then reusing a roller always wrap in saran wrap if need to use next day but when job is done goes in trash. No matter how much time i spend cleaning a roller it always hardens and never works like a new one. They are cheap enough why even bother cleaning them?
I have a better cheaper way. Purdy 3 pack of rollers are $11 at Menards. 3 buckets and and a drill are more money. Throw out the used ones when your done.
0:07 why is she was painting with no plastic paint cover mainly we just saw the video she was painting and her child he's a Nerf gun make her fall and suddenly a bunch of paint got over her couch and that is a bad idea for me I make sure I get a plastic paint cover or she move her furniture and then she was painting and then she get one of those brown paper and one of those paint mats too, am I right?🤷

Congrats on the new building !!!
Hmm, that’s a possibility
You have been busy! Great to see. Nice ideas! I will need those soon. I will check it out 🙂
I’ve kept rollers for up to a month in the fridge with just cling film wrap.
I’m working on it
I used to clean my rollers. PITA. Just wrap the roller and tray in a plastic bag until you're done painting and then toss it. I'm too old and time is too dear to screw with it.
I put small tight screw and it stays moist and never dries out
I love the innovation
I wish I could give you three thumbs up! I love all of your ideas
Thank you so much!
How do you clean the paint from inside the roller before using it, or do you?
Basically, a twenty minute commercial for everything under the sun, then a thirty second way to clean a roller. Thank you.
If that hex wears off of the spinner - drill it out and use a threaded rod with a coupler nut to insert into your drill chuck. Could hot press one in, instead
Great inventions, thank you ! ! !
I use an old roller cage straighten the bend and spin it in the drill inside a 4” waste pipe bit wobbly but does the trick eventually will wreck my drill but i do like your coned hex bit insert much better 👍🏽
Ingenious. Well done.
Thank you very much!
The Kilted engineer and investor.
Great ideas...you might to consider getting them patented and, going on one of those "Shark shows" to get money so you can mass produce and sell to the big "Box stores."
5:03 the wet paint on his fingertips silently driving him mad! I saw that side eye mister!
Got some great ideas here I like them 😊
Wow! Thanks for the great tips!
You are so welcome!
How about a link for the book you show near the end, "How to choose a contractor for your next home improvement project"? I've tried Google and Amazon and didn't find it.
Same place as the paint rollers- www.ThatKiltedGuyStore.com
I planned on it
Where is the link for those caulking tube caps?
Great job. Thank you 😊
I put a screw in the end. Thanks for looking for new solutions to this irritating problems
Great ideas, patent your new ones and you can live more leisurely.
Awesome ideas 💡!!
Fantastic ideas
Glad you like them!
I have considered it. Thanks
or with latex based paints just rinse the roller off and throw it in the washing machine by itself. That gets it so clean the carpet backing on the roller is even paint free like a brand new roller . And no the washing machine does not get paint all over it. Try it !, just make sure the wife is not home.😊
lol
I wish you would 3D print a simple tool to pop the lid of the 4 gallon mud bucket
They make all of these ideas of yours already
With that in mind nobody should make anything anymore, ever.
lol
Actually someone designed a paint roller cleaner that took about 15 seconds to completely clean a roller on TV for sale, it worked so well that some paint roller company bought the rights and took it off the market, probably so they could stay in business.
Really good ideas! I need!
11/8/24..hey (KiltSkirt) 'MudMan'..Hello from New Orleans area..much enjoyed your inventions for painting/roller cleanup & storage. Lots of practical common sense innovations! A+✅️💪
..since you mentioned 3D printing...hey give us a video on your machine & supplies & work bench/set-up & cabinet or mobile cart & work top area/size etc.
No BS with you just plain talk to all us blue collar guys...with yesterday's paint still on our fingernails...stay safe & carry on!👍🍺😊
Will do, thanks
That os a good idea my friend.👏👍🇺🇲
Thanks 👍
Nice ideas .
You are a genious!
Thank you.
Dumb question.. what do you do with the 10 gallons of paint water each time you clean a roller?
Just dump it out like you would if you washed it any other way
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY what I meant was, where do you dump it? I usually toss the paint roller because once it's dry it's a small piece of solid trash. If I clean it in buckets, I've now got 10 gallons of thinned paint. Isn't that risky for my plumbing?
I use my house hose and it spins it real fast getting it clean in a couple of minutes.
Would mason jar seals work on your tubes
I'll have to try that, thanks
Oh my gosh! I did this and my drill fell in bucket and is ruined!!!
But my roller is clean!
What if you used oil base paint or enamel?
That would take too much paint thinner.
Dang...I hope you applied for a patent on that roller spinner.
yeap you 'll need 10 gallons of water to clean one roller because there is no way you can use that dirty water to clean another roller, so let's say you have 3 or 4 rollers to clean you'll need 30 to 40 gallons of water to clean them not to mention you'll need to carry around 3 five gallons buckets don't know if it's really more efficient to just wash the roller on a splash sink or just wrap it up in plastic to be cleaned somewhere else and use new ones also to remove the roller from a handle I just use a small scraper to hit the bottom of the roller and it come lose then i pull it off !
How's about we just put a 16d nail in tube?
That nap looked dry to me.
I been painting since 1996 and I use a hose and a jet water pistol to clean my 18in rollers have been for years.
It was damp after spinning out, but wet
I use press and seal
Just put a set in the cart. Great tool at a great price.
The Chinese will steal your idea but you should patent it anyway if you have not done so already.
that's genius...
just use air compressor, and the buckets. spin with air, no extra tools.
Fastest way to clean a paint roller in 30 seconds starts @10:00
Finally
11:48 start the trick
Never had any luck cleaning then reusing a roller always wrap in saran wrap if need to use next day but when job is done goes in trash. No matter how much time i spend cleaning a roller it always hardens and never works like a new one. They are cheap enough why even bother cleaning them?
That’s why I came up with this, because it cleans it more thoroughly and faster than other methods I’ve tried
some convenient edits there?
I have a better cheaper way. Purdy 3 pack of rollers are $11 at Menards. 3 buckets and and a drill are more money. Throw out the used ones when your done.
0:07 why is she was painting with no plastic paint cover mainly we just saw the video she was painting and her child he's a Nerf gun make her fall and suddenly a bunch of paint got over her couch and that is a bad idea for me I make sure I get a plastic paint cover or she move her furniture and then she was painting and then she get one of those brown paper and one of those paint mats too, am I right?🤷
This guy bought a gremlin in little china.
