I actually loved the clip you included in your video tribute where he does a solo alongside Diana Krall playing Hit That Road Jack. That was fantastic. It's hard tom pic. He is so fluid and rhythmic.
My Dearest Friend from elementary school and throughout our adult life, I will always have the memories! From an early age, Russell was always that "Guitarist" .... it was always magical! I'm gonna miss my Friend and Brother from another Mother! He was a GREAT MAN AND MUSICIAN! To know HIM was to Know LOVE and JOY!
Rip Russell Malone ❤❤❤I will never forget you growed up in church listening to you play guitar for Apostle Isaiah Revils you was the best 😢😢❤❤ rest in heaven peace Sir
I saw him with Diana Krall at a jazz festival in the 90s that I played with a local youth jazz ensemble - Russell blew us away and absolutely stole the show! We got to meet him that day too and he was kind and encouraging. What a brilliant player and human!
Wow just head as a guitar player of 40 years Russel Malone was one of my favourites Knew he played with Harry Connick jnr and Diana Krall and loved his dediication to fluid technique and magical sound we are all in the same boat but some of us and Russel is one leave a beautiful legacy of didication and beauty Hes still one of my favourites
Russell was an extraordinary individual and very humble. My first meeting with him was in the lunch room at Monroe High School my junior year. I was reading an issue of Guitar Player magazine and he sat down at my table, and asked if he could read it. Every conversation we had afterwards was on guitars and music. We had a talent show at school later on, and he performed last. He crushed it with his imitation and rendition of George Bensons This Masquerade. Our last conversation was on Messenger and I have read it many times today. Rest easy old friend
devastating news. his playing style was totally unique. the way he played outside...no one plays like that. his chord melody was absolutely incredible. it's hard to believe such a great talent has left us.
I saw him with Dianna Krall at the Algonquin Hotel in NYC in the 90’s and he absolutely stole the show. You knew when he played he was doing what he wanted to do. His ideas and melodic lines were beautiful. Ron Carter the greatest bass player in history was using Russell, Ron could have had anybody in the world but he chose Russell, that right there shows how great he was. This is a huge blow to the music world and he will be missed, you don’t realize how great he was until he’s gone. Charley Christian, Wes, George Benson, Russell was right up there with the masters.
I had the privilege to spend and hour talking with Russell after his concert at the Internationsl Bass Society with Ron Carter. What a great musician and wonderful man!
Russell was fabulous at what he did. He played legato (smoothly), with a classy, gentle attack on the strings, with a very soft sound...SO easy on the ears. He was just the best. :)
Although I live in Germany, I have had the chance to hear Russel live with the Ron Carter Big Band in the Birdland in New York. Could talk to him in a break, he was such a kind and humble guy and and a great musician too. Like his work with singers a lot. RIP
Truly a great loss, I just found out tonight watching this video. A master of 'Fluidity in Motion" on guitar...RIP Mr. Malone and enjoy playing with Pat, JP (Jimmy Ponder), Wes, and all of the other musicians who are in our memories. Thanks Chase Maddox for sharing this outstanding Tribute to this musical 'Phenom' ...
In the 1980s, When I was asst. Mgr at Bojangles in Albany, Georgia, Russell was one of my cooks. He was already a great guitarist then and aspired to make jazz music his way of life. I play bass and sat in on some jam sessions with him at the Albany's House of Blues. We corresponded a few times over the years. I shall miss him and his wonderful music.
So sad to hear about Russell. I always enjoyed his playing, but it’s been awhile since I’ve listened intently to him. Definitely going to go back through his catalog. Nicely done Chase, thanks for putting this together so quickly for us.
Thanks so much for remembering him, his musical genius and his way to be in this planet . The first CD I ever had from him , that was a gift from a friend, was "Sweet Georgia peach". Any song from that CD have special meaning to me. Thanks again Maddox,, blessings
RIP Russell Malone. In the 1990s I saw him at the Blue Note in NYC. I walked in on him while he was warming up. He was playing California P.M. by George Benson to warm up. My mouth dropped open and I said him you can play that! He laughed and said to me, I hope you enjoy the show. Amazing guitarist. Will be missed.
Soo nice/gracious of you to do this Chase, thank you. I like the Black Butterfly album, in particular his rendition of Say A Little Prayer (Burt Bacharach). I like his composition: Mugshot performed live at Smoke....he is doing some "road less travelled stuff" on that tune. Sad, very sad, may he Rest In Peace. Been playing his version of Road Song by Wes as played at Emmet's. I play jazz guitar.
I didn’t discover Russell Malone until I had already moved to Thailand. Never had the chance to see him but always enjoyed his recordings. I Always thought his best work was with Dianna Krall. I can never get enough of the two of them playing. So sorry to hear about his loss today. Thank you for doing this retrospective of a truly great musician.
Thanks very much for doing this, Chase. I saw Russell twice live, once in Chicago, where he was the leader of a small group, once in Marciac, France, as part of a great guitars quartet, I think it was Russell, Pat Martino, Mark Whitfield, and Chuck Loeb. I did not really appreciate what a master he was until watching this tribute, though. I did not know he could play as fast as he does on the Benny Green track, for example. And I never heard him play all those harmonics before. I had heard him play with Diana Krall on TV. I've seen him doing a clinic at some school in the southI'll be digging into him on Spotify now. I really liked that first track from "Live at the Jazz Standard," kind of a combination of country and smooth jazz that was very unusual, it had kind of a Metheny feel. He could play so many styles so well! The tune with Billy Taylor was very cool, too. RIP.
Thank you for your tribute to a wonderful human being and incredible musician. Watching him play 'Listen to the dawn' was heart wrenching ,so full of emotion. God Bless Russell Malone.
I saw Russell Malone at the Herbst Theatre in S.F. in the company of my guitar teacher Calvin Keys, who just passed as well. He was flawless. Also saw him at UCDavis with Benny Greene. Again, flawless. I will miss him and his friend Calvin, my teacher, even more.
Thanks for this Chase... hurt He is gone but grateful to have had opportunity to see and chat with Him a few times... Smiling now because He shared His life and love with the world... Well done RM, RIP !!
For me 1:01:42 encapsulates Russell Malone's good heart and soul as he performs "Listen To The Dawn" by the late Kenny Burrell. Thank you, again, Chase for the tribute. RIP Mr. Malone🙏
Saw him in Den Haag 1997 with Diana Kral and with Ron Carter at Moods in Zürich before Covid. I was never a Fan of his kind of Guitar Jazz, but he was so good that I had big Pleasure in seeing him Live. Great Musician!
I saw Russell with Diana Krall in the mid 90’s. That particular night she looked ( and sounded) under the weather and Russell really stepped up, he was amazing
I am listening to your RM tribute ...Super !! My favourite memories of Russell were his soundtrack recordings of Kansas City ....Robert Altman movie....Queen Notions is only one I remember....thanks Rest easy Russell Malone...😢
Wow, so sorry to hear this. I loved his playing, got all of his CDs. I read somewhere that he suffered a heart attack while on tour in Japan with Ron Carter. But I have to say, his physical appearance over the last couple of years made me wonder if he was ill because he was always a bit heavy set guy. But he looked pretty thin in recent years. I'll miss him.
I saw this post a few minutes ago and was shocked. I'm ALRIGHT now, but goodness...I met him a couple of times and he was a cool dude to be around; hilarious. Rest In Peace and Love.
Respect for doing this commemoration! One of my favourite guitarists and the depth and breadth of the personality shines through in all the details of his playing. RIP Russel Malone.....
I was at a Russell Malone seminar back many years ago and he gave a famous piece of advice regarding soloing "Two hip make an ass". Keep to the basics and you will sound great! RIP Russell Malone.
I knew Russell back in the 80's when we both lived in Atlanta. He played all over town and it was always fun to run into him. It was a pleasure to know you, Russell.
I told my Silicon Valley buddies, musicians all, that they needed to check out this singer, Diana Krall, coming to Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. Some of them showed. It was a powerful show and my buddies were all stage door Johnnys for Ms Krall. A huge part, and profoundly so, was Mr. Malone. I urge you to listen to his duet with Ms Krall on the tune "You're Looking at Me" . He was a beautiful guitarist.
Played a couple tunes with him and a friend of mine when I was deciding wether to go to William Patterson or not he was teaching there the past two years really nice guy pushed me out of my comfort zone amazing player
I have several of Russell Malones cd’s but how i found him was listening to one of Diana Kralls albums “Look of love” his solo on the Song title “ Maybe you’ll be there . that solo was the best I’ve ever heard. I’ve been a fan ever since
Thank you so much for posting, I feel embarrassed to say, that I've never heard of him before I saw a post about his passing on Facebook. I am astounded by his artistry and playing style, and am now going to pull up his whole body of works. RIP Mr Malone 🎸🎼🎸🎼🎸🎼🎸🎼🎸🎼🎸
omg... this is how I'm finding out about this. He's the first solo I studied on There Will Never Be Another You and one of the biggest reasons I fell in love with jazz guitar. One of the most flooring things I've ever seen him play was How Deep Is Your Love. One that I'll never learn, only forever appreciate
of all things...there was a particular rendition of the theme to Gunsmoke... one of a few that can be found online... but this particular one, which I have not been able to find again, was infused with something else... I met and spoke with him once too, after a performance in Washington D.C... gracious and brilliant... certainly one of my top 5 guitarists of all time. appreciation.
The syncopated run at 13:15 is the cat's meow, even after all the harmonics. It's easy to see this man practiced so much for such clarity of technique.
A true Master. My favourite performance/recording of his is my very first introduction to him. That is his solo on Harry Connick Jr’s version of ‘It’s alright with me’. Rest in peace Russell 🙏🏾
Good AM Chase, so i am now having my morn' coffee and listening to the Diane Reeves segment where Russell ends a solo piece circa 15:00. Now wondering if my 60 years of playing are totally negated,. Well of course not but as one who too often repeats a solo line i will repeat my "ty for this". had to take considerable time 'n effort on your part ...but it wasn't painful on the ears and certainly highlights some wonderful work that I, and perhaps some others hadn't heard.
Journey Well Russell...you are on my A-List of Jazz Guitarists with your signature sound and style and so glad you have a legacy of recordings that will be treasured beyond time!!!
I saw him with diane krall and ben wolfe about 20 years ago . We got to talk in the break, he asked how the guitar sounded. I said i was a bit to loud in the mix. And he repleyed, The guitar is never to loud.
If I recall correctly he accompanied Diana Krall in Belfast in 5 November 2001 - superb side man - such a memorable night - devastating loss of one of the greats of jazz guitar 😢
