That's some nice video of the REL at the beginning showing the details. That's a nice piece of furniture. I've had the same floor standing speakers for 20 years. They have to look nice to stick around that long.

Allowance is canceled, lol! This was great. I own Cornwall IVs and want a sub but I don't want some shiny black or white box. Visually, the Classic 98 is a no-brainer and I know that you run Forte IVs so I was super excited when I got the notification that you were doing this review.
I have some of the same neuroses when it comes to subwoofers but this video has just about convinced me to give it a go. Keep up the great work, Bob! Love what you're doing!!

Hey There Bob - a great posting like this has me start to think about things I hadn’t considered before: placement of my sub and maybe that’s why standing waves are an issue for my space, flabby woofer, speed, etc. . You are causing me to dive deeper (not a bad thing as I’m a nut). It’s a really interesting topic as my goal is to optimize the system I have vs. buying new gear because I ‘think’ I’ve spotted the deficiencies in current equipment. Thanks again for keeping me on my toes and giving me a new sandbox to play in without succumbing to simply buying something new. This is a great teaching point. Keep on keeping on!

Sublime woodwork is eye candy for me and this model sub gives me an ultra low sugar high! My soapbox has been me screaming into the void " why just gloss black and gloss white for subs (and many other speakers)?" Most interiors in our homes are more matte in sheen and not piano gloss or piano white Architectural Digest like interiors. Is a nice subtle, light gray matte paint finish , being less costly to fabricate and another option to the beautiful walnut veneer finish, to much to ask for?!!! I'm off my soapbox now.😊

Thanks, a fun and informative video. My mains drop off around 60Hz. For me a pair of modest ELAC 1010s add a bit below that. Having 2 definitely makes placement easier and lets each work a little less hard.
Caution: unplug subs during electrical storms. The auto-on can get them fried during a surge. Been through it twice.

Quick update ; Diggin' it more as time goes by. Enjoying your review of the 98. You're very funny! Just bought one last week I think this is my 10th sub . It looks very at home with my wharfedale Linton's. I'm not very good at describing the sound with words , but it is so nice . Pushing them with a Primaluna Prologue. Full ,rich ,room filling bass. It sounds much deeper than I thought it would. It truly has made me want to go through my record collection, it seems to make everything new. I'm sure it has some breaking in to do but I would say it's my favorite so far. Sounds like more than 300 watts. Really like the paper driver. Watching from Gateway to the west, St.Louis,Mo.

I have an NHT 12 inch ported externally amplified (with its own NHT amp that has a crossover setting on the back and gain control on the front). I also have another system that uses a PSB 8 inch internally powered and ported sub with crossover setting, phase switch and gain control.
I recently learned of a cool way to tune a sub via placement. You put the sub in the spot in the room where you will most often be listening from. Then you move around the room as your music is playing. Wherever you notice the best sound as you move all around the room is the spot that you will then place your sub. This method is easy and works every time. With the sub in its best position you can then fine tune the crossover and gain settings and voila! you're done!😊

I have 2 Classic 98s, each of which is connected to the binding posts of a bi-wired Kef R11 Meta by custom spade-clip-equipped Speakon cables. Adjusting the crossover and volume can seem finicky, but trust your ears -- also use good recordings. Some recordings are not well engineered for the low end and will sound lumpy no matter what you do. Start with the low end frequency rating of your speakers, assume they don't actually go that low in your space. Follow the instructions for setting and turning the knobs. I expect you'll find your happy place without that much difficulty.

Great video, Bob. I’ve got an outlaw audio ultra-x12 sub that I sometimes mess around with trying to integrate into my system. I share some of your initial thoughts as far as the process of tuning/placement/etc being a hassle.
I have some Kef R3 Metas that arrive today, and I’m hoping they will be great without the sub. My main problem with the sub is trying to get it set up to work well across the range of music I listen to. One record it’ll sound nice and smooth like it’s just an extension of the mains, but other songs it’s loud and boomy as hell. Could be the sub, as it is designed more for home theater applications. Maybe something like this or the KEF KC-92 would be a better choice down the road.
Anyway, thanks for another great video!

Redmond, OR. It doesn't take much to stand out from the 'black oak man-cave' look so kudos to REL but JBL's classic l-10 10" @250watts comes in walnut at a lot less $. matches perfectly sound wise & visually with the JBL classic offering (though why no 12" JBL?) I get the 'boom' critique; i feel like I have to step into a decompression chamber after ever time I listened to my dual SC-2000 SVS subs. C'mon audio world how difficult is it to offer colors or wood for subs? Very difficult apparently. 🤷🏻‍♂

I never understand why it matters where a sub goes……I’ve always been led to believe that 50hz and below is omni-directional…..as someone who has produced music (Drum n Bass) my job with sub was to make it “just appear” as a pressure more than a tone…..

REL make great subs, but I feel this one is overpriced. I buy my subs from BK electronics who for many years made subs for REL, many of their classic designs.
Now they sell direct. Beautiful real wood veneer old school subs. Much cheaper than REL. They even match the veneers if you buy two, and customer service is excellent.
Don't know if they export though.
I know this sounds like a commercial, but I have no skin in the game. I just love the four subs I bought from them.
What you don't get is the bells and whistles and room correction etc.
Edit. Should mention I'm in Scotland and BK are in Essex UK. Seemingly at one point they made 1000 units per month for REL which they shipped to Welsh Wales, the land of the unpronounceable place names. And dragons.

As soon as i discovered running them in stereo pairs there is just no going back... I am currently using a pair of classic 98s at this very moment and incidentally they replaced a pair of 9ti..... the 98s are better in every way if you are using mainly for music.........

Comment #3. Have you heard of the subwoofer crawl? I'm not dedicated enough to do it. Supposedly you place the subwoofer where your head normally would be when listening to music, then crawl around the floor and put your head in all the spots you could place the subwoofer until you find a spot that sounds perfect, then place the sub there. Yeah right like I'm gonna do that with dual 12" Dayton Audios and I'm a skinny old guy. Not happening.
