I liked Jennifer's character in the movie. I get the type who has distanced herself from society like she just can't take humanity's general shittiness. It's why she just can't get over the general charging for free snacks (which was pretty funny).
This movie so perfectly captured the zeitgeist that, even in the silly lunacy, it almost felt like a documentary. 😀 I can just hear the writers mid-filming "No, it needs to be crazier! Put in more crazy!"

I don’t think they were attacking ‘phones’ specifically , but more generally our tendency as a culture to get distracted from socio-political issues by celebrity and pop culture, social media stunts etc... and phones are just a vehicle that accommodate those kind of distractions

I will have to disagree with your opinion in regards of Jennifer Lawrence's performance. I thought she was great and the perfect choice for the role. Leo was also fantastic, but I didn't care much about his family, I sometimes would forget he was married with kids... so didn't feel a connection with them right at the end when they were at the dinner table. Non-american here checking in. And I just gotta say that there's one particular thing stat stands out to me: The movie obviously DOES directly target Republicans, and I'm confused about people saying it doesn't.
There literally was a news montage of Republican conspiracy theorists that had a part directly saying something along the lines of "Republicans are statisticly more likely to have dumb beliefs". It stood out to me as a hostile and actually just rude caricature.
    The movie is vulgar.

There are some truly amazing glimpses of a sci-fi flick in there that I was hoping would turn the movie around. The opening is fantastic(!!!). But after they are introduce the dum-dum Trump parody president, it linearly decreases in appeal all the way 'till the last 5 minutes.

I don't think Street was Trump or parody of him - my take was her character pretended to be like Trump in the movie to take advantage of the already existing Maga supporters portrayed in the movie - ie, she was trying to make use of the Trump phenomenon to stay in power. Have only seen the movie once, may have it wrong. To me, she represents the tension of most politicians trying to stay in power and also solve state problems - not typical to be able to do both the tragedy of politics.

I think we needed the contrast of Leo and Jen’s characters. Both were deeply upset about the reality, but they handled it in different ways. Jen was younger and more idealistic… she stuck to her truth the whole time, was criticized for it and in the end was so broken down that she just said fuck it, we’re all doomed and at least I tried. I think that accurately depicts how a lot of GenY and GenZ feel right now. Progressives are trying to fix the system but it’s too powerful and corrupt to defeat and a sense of doom and apathy dominate their thoughts.
Leo was a bit older and was more swayed by the allure of celebrity, an affair, and more trusting of the institutions he was told would protect society. He represents a more GenX to Boomer (he’s not that old, but his mentality is there) where he still believes in democracy, the media and even capitalist society at least somewhat and that somehow it’s all going to work out. He only snaps when he keeps getting proven wrong over and over again that the system is too corrupt and he realizes the only good that’s left is the family he abandoned after being seduced by fame. If you only had one character, we wouldn’t have the nuance of how different generations are reacting to the various challenges society is facing right now.

Honestly, because of how true and scarily accurate the depictions of our broken humanity were in this movie, I actually didn’t see it as comedic…at all. I felt extremely saddened and depressed by the end of the movie, because as much as I think society is f**ked up, i cared about most of the main characters (the good ones, at least), the same way I care about humanity in general. It felt more like a sci-fi “satire” (loose term) drama that sticks with you because of the powerful message behind it. We are all hypocrites in some way, but that definitely didn’t invalidate any of the points made in the movie.
Leonardo DiCaprio deserves an Oscar just for the news meltdown scene alone. I don’t even think we was acting in that scene, because I 100% believe that was all genuinely his feelings.

I loved this movie and I’m surprised how many people hate it. My best friend watched it before me and hated it. He was preparing me for maybe being disappointed. I wasn’t and disagreed with his takes completely. I loved Jennifer Lawrence’s character and thought she was the perfect actress to play her. I’d like to think if I was in their situation I would be like her. She was so brave and fearless and stood up to everyone. I unfortunately think I’d probably be more like Leo and be too scared to say anything and just try and go along with everything, regardless of how wrong I know it is. I was glad he got a backbone in the end and tried to fix things, even though it was far too late by that point. I found this movie to be hilarious despite its bleak subject matter. It did however really make me think and stayed with me long after the credits were done.

My not-so-crazy prediction is that Jennifer Lawrence will be the only nomination the film gets at the Oscars, because she's the only thing that works consistently in the movie and Academy is obsessed with her. Y'all are far off in your assessment in her performance verses the other actors. She did what Leo did well, just a few more times in the movie. Plus she had the funniest (running) joke of the movie about the General who charged for the snacks. You guys talk about the precedence of Sam Rockwell getting a nomination, but not about J Law getting a nom for every damn movie she does. Including getting the ONLY nomination for Joy (another underwhelming movie by an Oscar-loved off beat comedy director). It feels like you have something against her for not acknowledging her appeal and history w the Oscars, seeing how you guys are ~Oscar experts~

    • @poindexterorozco

The movie was so flat. I hardly laughed for it being a comedy. And it blamed random people for the crisis more than it did Democrats in power who also do nothing about climate change. • @Sickofdrawingcowboys717

I would argue his early stuff Step Brothers, Taladaga, Anchor man, is for kids. This was clearly very deliberately on the nose. It's weird to hear that as a criticism. Was Galaxy Quest too on the nose parodying Star Trek, or was that not the entire point? I personally found it very funny but not the jokes and quips, more the breakdowns, the stress and confusion, the disbelief and realising how fucked they were. The rest of the movie just had me angry like I have been these last 4/5 years as it was so perfectly satired with what is happening. I think if you are very concerned with the ever increasing material capitalism in the world you will support the movie. But if you think everything is ok and nothing needs to change you probably didn't notice you were watching a movie.

What's actually ironic and funny and terrorizing at the same time is not one of these rich actor's give a toss about changing their own narasasitic lives to reduce their own environmental footprints but heap that full responsibility all onto the "little people" pedestrian public. It's never there Hollywood royalty that morphed the mentality and psychological aspects of consumerism into the fabric of society and culture for serving their own bottom line, but they get to use their art to absolve their guilt by pretending they care. How truly ironic this film is escapes all of them while embodying every joke themselves. And interviews for add revenue,,I'm sure they tell themselves they are doing good works by being the messenger with their art.

From what I've heard in reviews, most folks thought it was preaching to the choir, had too much of a liberal bent (as in "Hahaw, look at how stupid Trumpsters are," etc.), and came across as "smug" and holier-than-thou elitist in its tone. I saw words like "smug," "egomaniacal," and "pretentious" tossed around in writings about this feature.

(movie is SATIRE) Got an insurance statement for an URGENT CARE. A vagrant homeless friend suggested an URGENT-CARE instead of a WALK-IN as a means of sooner attention than an EMERGENCY. Backwards no? Pretty hard to see where Greek word hospitality and hospital means show love to strangers but instead love their wallets.
So the Urgent Care demands $50 (and insurance sends statement they were paid $450) and the only thing she the doctor did was take a look and say yep you should go to your doctor or ER. The lump i feared (for 3 weeks) could be infection from Hawaii lava rock that skinned me leaving particles in it, eventually went down and my other leg did have the same shape lesser lump in the same spot.
Need I say the system paying the rich to be richer for doing NOTHING. It reminds me of movie DONT LOOK UP where the Urgent Care goes topless on last day and a restaurant table orgy is shown on the roof. Not quite detailed like WallStreet Wolf but about 5 times more people.
So now i have a cough and sneeze that feels like muscle ripping off ribs, or broken ribs, and i have a hernia mesh to worry as involved. Blood drew Monday but no CT until next Monday, and no word of the blood results. I go to the ER, they sign me in, take a covid test and i wait 2 hours (30m before swab, 90m after swab) in which i'm in the general waiting room where nonbilled nonpatients sit with their admitted waiting ones. Goodbye walk-out that's 2 hours i can TEND to my OWN emergency. Let those who die from the asteroid get all they deserve and know they were told, because they act as if doctors are gods and all your problems are from not going to doctors or obeying doctors or worshipping them not even blaming them when they do end up killing you. Death to them all by God's asteroid to remodel-EARTH.
