Such a great review of my favourite film of the fest! Saw you guys walking out of the screening and was too nervous to say hey, hope you guys are having a great time here!
This film gave me The Others vibes. I know it's completely different stories/plots, but I couldn't help but make this comparison while watching, specially during the second half and obviously the end. The apartment is a main character, definitely, glad you made that observation. Absolutely loved and enjoyed watching this.
Actually … I saw a streaming version of the play at the beginning of pandemic. It really hit home. One of the most realistic honest plays I’ve ever seen. It’s a real life “horror” movie. Doesn’t pull any punches. Can’t wait to see movie.
Fine analysis. I believe the dreams Richard is constantly going on about is the key to understanding the title and the basis of it being in the horror genre. The twist is that the horror (primarily) belongs to alien monsters (hideous as described by Richard) as they take in this movie/play. True, things are bad for the humans. But from the alien monsters' perspective, they simply can't believe how anyone could ever withstand such difficult situations. To them, this story and its layering of tragedies upon tragedies is so traumatic that they struggle to sit through all of it. Yet, these humans somehow seem to accept it as routine. It's hard to imagine such a reality actually existing in the universe. But at least there's hope they will be put out of their misery by a huge fire that seems inevitable. To their shock, that never happens...and the Dad closes the door to the apartment after which the family necessarily will continue (seemingly never ending) with their massive struggles. Scary! For humans...but even more so for alien monsters whose culture is unencumbered by such gruesome goings on.
Doubt it. The Father got multiple nominations including Editing. This movie seems like at best screenplay or a surprise performance nomination. That’s it.
I actually like some of the actors saying they're line off camera. It was a scene where the camera was on the mother talking and she said something that cause the father to say something but you can tell in his tone he didn't like it. That was actually pretty clean to me because it was very good acting, and tbh real. Most of the family was talking from one room from another, literally yelling throughout the apartment to have a conversation. But I get what he means
I just read the script in book form. I have never seen the play. I have never seen the movie. I kept waiting for the play script to have a horrifying reveal, something unique and unimaginable based on what I’ve heard about the story from reviews. This never happened. Even so, I look forward to seeing the movie version. It will be interesting to see how the actors bring the script to life.
This movie made me really anxious, I had to get up and catch a breather for a minute, felt like the world was closing in on me. The conversations and experience were just so realistic. I didn’t go into this expecting it to be a horror so I guess I had a different perspective on what was happening. Like the way I interpreted that last scene where the dad was alone, is even though they’re a close family spending the holidays together, helping each other out etc., due to his betrayal cheating on his wife, he personally felt outcasted and his daughters might have changed their outlook on who he is and what the family dynamic was going to be like.
there was a dread all the way throughout. being part of any kind of family that has to put on appearances is incredibly stressful. but those last few moments did get genuinely scary!
Love the review. Gave me enough to be excited about without spoiling too much. I've seen the play on stage, but it was a while ago, tbh I don't remember much. Very looking forward to reliving the play in a new way!
The performances are incredible, but it will be seen as more of an ensemble piece as there is no definitive lead character. Still could see some acting nominations though
I'm amazed that these two interesting, smart and articulate dudes have only 20 thousand subscribers while a shallow hack like Grace Randolph has 900 thousand... Sad, really.

I saw the play twice onstage - thought it was SUPER overrated. It was fine, but felt like a very bland family drama just like a million others. The eerie element at the end felt very tacked on and shoehorned. I actually think transplanting it to a new medium and making the whole thing feel creepier is a great idea. Looking forward to seeing the film.
I feel like every single review is missing a major key point - the characters were high as fuck. The film showed it clearly: what made them high, how it got into the apartments air, and the times they're really really tripping balls from it. The Dad new something was wrong in there at first but couldn't pinpoint it after a while. People who were bored or didn't like it were tricked by the film, and ignored it's one blatant detail on what made them so exponentially paranoid and filled with fear. Their behavior toward each other, The dreams, everything. Try watching again with a respectful mood and open mind, pay attention to the walls, pipes, and well....the bathroom. That's about as far as I'll explain other than: it's similar to The Haunting of Hill House in that specific regard. It really gives the film the filter that it needs to help understand all the themes and commentary as it should be. And goodness the red herrings are OFF THE CHARTS which I love. It is a well done movie with an even better story. Paranoia and fear, destabilizers of the mind - especially with the help of external chemicals or substances that change, or in this case, destabilize brain chemistry. The answer is in the early half of the film. 👍

I get it. Great acting, but script muffled and truly frustrating. It WILL fool people with trailers. Can't remember being so artfully disappointed in something since I last beat my head against a theatre wall. Erg.

Interesting that you mention comedy in this film I only watched it once (and that was painfull enough) but noticed nothing funny at all (i wish I had) in fact I found most of those digs at each other quite depressing and bleak -the family is totally flawed and so are the characters as individuals.it was slightly interesting and unexpected to see Schumer play such a dull dorky unfunny lesbian but the novelty wore thin as the movie went on. I can see it as a play very well , having said that its a play id never choose to go and see. Like pulling teeth - seriously dry !

Saw this play when it originated in Chicago with members of my theater company. Just watched the movie. A much different experience.
Is this comparable to “The Father” or is the lack of a Hopkins-Level performance going to hurt it?

My vote, today, for the People's Choice award went to The Humans. Second place, The Power of the Dog, and Third place, Benediction.
I loved this film! It reminded me of the one-act plays I used to perform in when I was in high school
