Dump truck bed won't go down

- In this video I work out the problem of a dump truck bed that is binding so that it won't go down on its own. The dump system worked great for years but then all of a sudden the dump bed would get stuck in the up position.
My first guess was the pivot point on the middle of the box. Nice fix. Boy oh boy it's a good thing I burried my feelings a long time ago or might have to cry😂😂😂😂😂. Nice tattoo👍
You're so rite about you just can't tell now a days 😂😂😂
Great comment, I live in Utah but I promise if we lived by each other we would be in trouble together buddy, don’t change a thing because you’re one of the good ones👍
Just make sure you remind him to keep it greased . I love you enthusiasm and when you weld you make sure it ain’t going to crack again .great work like usual, Miss Diane looked really happy sleeping on your bag, lot of love between you too, take care .looking forward to your next video, regards Andy Perth Australia
Tight spot for the spool gun and grinder. Understatement of the day. Super nice work for the conditions. You are a master at the craft!
Nice to see the Princess taking care of herself this summer. Her highness needs her summer palace. 😅
Thanks as always.
Clunkty clunk thats real technical terms 😂 love it take care working on truck bed specially when raised, im in Scotland used to rain keep them coming regards
Little idea for the next time you may replace the pins and bushings on it down the road.. could use a combo wheel to add a double spiral groove on the pins themselves to allow grease to pass through a little easier. Awesome idea on the squishie effect of the bushings though, glad it worked out the way it did. Thanks for sharing😎👍
Good idea on the grooves for grease
Great job NBSWELDING on finding stuff wrong with the dump bed and welding-up cracks.
Excellent video as always. I learned a lot. Thank you! Enjoy that beautiful rain out there.
Those bins didn't seem that sloppy. If it was a double acting cylinder problem my have not been there.Unless a ear/tab that the bin goes through was catching on something.
Im guessing in the hoist mechanism.
Now ill watch the video.
Nice too see you had time to put a video out.👍
You could adjust the height limiting valve on the hoist to prevent the hoist from going up so high that it binds the hoist linkages, probably 1 inch lower would do it. You can also buy a portable shop AC unit with a movable duct and cool Princes' napping area, which would be a business write-off.👍
Good repair job . Aluminum beds are good to save weight but they have a lot of problems cracking at critical locations . That's job security for you .
Nice work, CB. I enjoy your explanations of what your next steps are. Wish you could have shown the spool gun work as you were doing them, but in such tight places, I realize it would not be an easy thing to do. Years ago, I used to live in WVa, for a few years, so I’ve seen those gully-washers and toad stranglers! 🙂
You are a genius and a good hearted dude!
I appreciate that!

"Drinker's Side".......😂😂
I live in southern MO.....but you could seriously be my neighbor- In fact, I grew up around a guy that looks like your twin (which is funny... because he is actually a twin 🤣). May have to get a few of his pics & send to ya.
Nice work on the repair!
Great work! A old small lathe for under 1000 may be worth it and make jobs like this way easier though.
Lathe wouldn't cost much but I got nowhere to put it...so I'd hafta build another shop...that's not cheap
I hate a cluttered work area...I won't be adding any machines to my shop...I think machine wise it's at full capacity
@@NBSWELDING gotcha.
@@NBSWELDING😂Shop is never big enough....it's a known problem for a lot of us! Ya think you 'ONLY' need a 40' x 80' til it gets built and packed with everything, then you put an addition on one side, then the other, then add a storage container, then another & roof between them, etc etc.... 😂I see ya got a few of those problems going on right now too! 😂🤷♂️🤷♂️🔨✏️🛠️📏⚡⚠️🖤✔️
Great fix. I also thought it might be in the hoist mechanism, but heard the pump motor running in the down mode. I've seen hydraulic hoses come apart inside causing this type of problem also.
Did you know that Mcmaster Carr sells nuts that are a wrench size larger than a standard nut? I needed to weld some 1/4-20 nuts on the back side of a piece of steel for leveling legs and didn't want to burn through the nuts I ordered 1/4-20 nuts that used a 1/2 inch wrench rather than the 7/16 wrench. On their website they are called Extreme Strength Steel Heavy Hex Nuts Grade 2H.
I didn't know about those nuts being available from them but I have seen those type before...very good for welding
I have a steel dump boby that would not go down because the rear hinges were rusted very bad because of lack of grease and salt.those pins were fine, other then the geometry of the lift itself the other pivot points need grease fittings too.
Well now that it cost him a lot of time and money do you think he will keep it greased ?? ..Me neither . Great job Clayton !
The root cause of the tipping issues is poor maintenance. Rear pivots not greased regular and l would ber the tipping scissor frame pivots are not greased either. All of which contributes to the alloy body cracking.
Interesting repair young man.
Did you check the other pins for grease or wear? Also, verify that the re isn't a problem with the valve body or a clogged up return line or hose.
The other pins were oozing grease everywhere...those guys tried that before they brought it to me
That's weird on the Hinges.
I've seen where they were oval shaped like a hotdog in a hallway.
Nice job 👍
Mighty fine work there but the issue I see is your buddy keeping the zerks greased i thank it will but in there again for the same issue because the way they looked when you Frist showed them one was missing an the other one didn't look like it has seen grease since the factory done it
It's not in the pins, it's in the lift itself it almost looks like geometry almost is to far extended and locks it in place. It's the geometry of the lift or binding in the bushings in the lift part. If you have slack in the pins on the lift when you extend it all the way it is changing geometry ever so slightly. Your on the right track. Run into this before.
Nice work,
Just subscribe to your Channel what you did to that little single axle dump truck aluminum bed awesome work keep it up I'll keep an eye on more videos thank you
Look back through the vids also...lots of fun builds, gizmos, and repairs
Thanks for watching
Awesome stuff. What you got in your spray bottle when your drill/tapping?
Sometimes used engine oil, sometimes used engine oil thinned down with some diesel fuel or solvent, sometimes it's my homemade Ed's Red (mineral spirits, kerosene, trans fluid), sometimes I use plain water...
Just depends...that video has been awhile ago so I don't know exactly what I was using then
I had a old 1964 Chevy dump truck that would do that all the time. Sometimes it would take its sweet time going back down and id have to jump up, grab it an hang there acouple minutes and it would slowly come back down.
Country boys can survive through anything!!😂
Aat's RIGHT
There may be an internal bypass in that cylinder on the retract side 🤔
Have you check the ram. Had one that had bend in it. It keep from Goin down
Isn’t that something. I’d have bet the farm that grease had nothing to do with it getting in such a bind.
Still doesn’t feel right that friction on those pins could’ve been the culprit. Smelled like a pump cycle/pressure relief issue.
But there it is. Damned if it isn’t. Learn something new every day.
Pity you didn't have a lathe to make slightly bigger pins, did the rest of the arm have grease fittings on them mate ? Nice job too :)
See @Johnwheels lathe comment
If the spots were too tight for the spool gun, why not use the Arccaptain 200? Good job as usual!
See @morenormal's comment previous
@@NBSWELDING Old habits die hard...I fully understand!
Well now that we're towards the end of the video it doesn't seem to be a cylinder issue
Another job done well
Nicely done
Princess Dianne might need an AC vent in the higher courts 😊
Did he say “not as much slack in the drinkers side”? I sure hope that’s what they call it where ur from cause I like it 😆
It's so dry here in North Texas I saw two trees chasing my dog to try to get him to water them.
Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching and commenting
Got to love no grease.depending on how much the truck is used those pivot points need to grease.once a moth will do the trick
How did you know where to stop when you drilled for the tap with the pin in the bushing? For installing the grease fitting.
Just guessed....drilled slightly more than through the bushing and probably went into the pin just a little
You could add a spring to pull the lifting hinge down.
You should see if it has down pressure? If not it gets stuck up with out Weight in the box. Use a line to pull it down.
Check for air in the cylinder/oil lines.
👍
Turn the pins down a little bit. Those new bushings are pretty tight.
Okay thanks
We have some trailers that the pins adrilled out half the length and then drilled out cross it With a grease zerk on the pin itself
sticky ram at full lenght, sticky hinges on the ram arms, bed not heavy enough, add a weight, add spring(s) to the ram, im watching with intrests.
Do you have those bandana for sell?
You remind me of Hank Jr
thats just what i thought it needed some grease & some oil -UK
I've had cracks on the bed around the lifting point
Rear hinges... Hmmm ? Did you forget to install grease nipples ? If not, how do you install them now without taking it all apart again ?
I installed grease nipples...you must not have watched it all
So now how are you going to Grease those pins ?
It's the hydraulic pump check the hydraulic pump system OS stuff in it it could be with messing up but could be getting stuck inside of his own enough lubrication the way to come back down
Have you given up on that ARC-CAPTAIN welder? Migging that Ali would have been easier with a normal mig gun over the spool gun.
Very good point
My spoolgun is setup for aluminum all the time so it's my normal reaction to grab it but your right about the ARC CAPTAIN gun reaching in there much easier.
I would have had to hook up a tank, change the spool, drive rolls, and contact tip....but it would have been alot easier to reach in that tight spot...I'll keep that in mind
Nobody made the girlfriend joke for a change.
At 85 in the piston is fully extended in the cylinder
So, sometimes you do too good of a job.😂 Those hinges probably weren't that robust from the factory. The thing about country boys is, they live too far from town to go to the hardware store, so they just make it happen with what's laying around.
I saw a short video recently where a guy said that lots of people seemed surprised that he did everything himself. He told them "Well look ya'll I'm poor, I can't pay "The guy" to do it I gotta do it myself....the way he said it was pretty funny.
Even as I've gotten older I still want to do everything myself and I feel like if someone does something for me then I lost the opportunity to have experienced and learned from the process of what was done.
People in my family gave me hell years ago for not hiring an apprentice and teaching someone what I do...they said it is a waste to spend over 30 years learning something and then die without sharing your experience, yet I still want to do everything myself and when someone is there to try to help me they usually just get in my way.
BUT, this is where TH-cam came in...I feel fortunate to take all of ya'll along with me when I do my work...WITHOUT having someone there to disrupt my normal method of operation.
Have a good day Buddy, keep a good bind on it
@@NBSWELDING It just so happens to be the best welding channel on youtube. 👍🏻
The check valve is not allowing the fluid to flow Back Into the reservoir !
Did you know they won't sell you hinge package
Didn't know that
Now you know why most dump trucks use a telescopic hoist…
👍
👍
cut a chanel in the pin(s) for the lube to travel...
Did you put grease xerx in them.
12:42 😙💨👍🔥💨👌⚠️✔️🖤🛠️⚡🔧📏🛠️
No Grease
Oops talked too soon.
i cant believe that little dab of slack causes it to stick up!...i dont buy it.
Sure did...surprised me too
💩repair💩
This is terrible to watch No Safety blocks on truck frame if winch let's go what are mechanics thinking besides repairing the truck ?? " SAFETY FIRST"
From the sound you have power up and power down you can set power down another 50 pounds if it catches again. Ever alum. box I have worked on needed welding on them.
