- Jeff Fryer, Bo Kimble and the eleventh-seeded Loyola-Marymount (CA) Lions, take on Terry Mills, Rumeal Robinson and the defending National Champions, the third-seeded Michigan Wolverines, in an exciting and wild NCAA West Regional 2nd Round action.
Game played on Sunday, March 18, 1990 at the Long Beach (CA) Sports Arena.

Fryer was absolutely unconscious... most of his shots didn't even hit the rim. Insane shooting display as fun today as it was 31 years ago!
Unreal, I mean these things were just "nothing but the bottom of the net", lol. I must say Jeff Fryer was the epitome of "locked in" that game.
This game stands out in my mind as one of a kind!
1st of all....how you score 150 in college......2nd, how you score 115 and still lose...then lose by over 30 points...truly amazing...the most incredible game i ever seen.....if someone told michigan that they would score 115 and still lose...by 30 no less.....no one in history of life would have came up with this game....truly amazing

i remember watching this game live. even tho im not a lmu fan i was pulling hard for them all the way. every time cbs cut away i cursed. they were the most exciting team in the history of college basketball. didnt want to miss a minute even tho the score was lopsided
Two things: Quinn Buckner's reaction of laughing out of disbelief every time that Jeff Fryer hit one of his rainbow, perfect form,, all net threes was classic for this game. Not a big Buckner fan, but for this game and those shots, it was perfect. Second, living in L..A. and the absolute feelings of horror, of overwhelming sadness, and just sorrow when Hank Gathers died and how that started a turbulent decade in SoCal was unforgettable. This game brought so much joy and elation and I am not even an LMU fan or anything. All of LA rallied around this rag tag Lions team that had heart and stamina. Amazing!
Pretty amazing game. A true classic. We haven't seen a game like that in the NCAA since then. The stats are just mind blowing.
One of my favorite games of all time. I had this game on a VHS tape and used to watch it every now and again for years.

After all these years, still a classic and an inspirational performance by the Loyola Marymount Lions, especially under the circumstances. And it was a TEAM effort- Jeff Fryer, Bo Kimble, Per Stemer, Terrell Lowery, Tom Peabody, Chris Knight, and Tony Walker. Not only was Michigan the defending national champs, but they were a senior heavy team. But, darn it, if CBS didn't pull away from this game, not once, but twice in the 2nd half when LMU was going on a scoring explosion and putting the game out of reach. I hope all the LMU Lions from this team are doing well today.
Awesome. I've been looking for this game for ages. I watched it live on TV and could not believe what I was seeing. Everything LMU threw up went in.

LMU didn't lose until they played UNLV, who would win it all. They honored Hank by going out there and kicking ass.
I knew Hank Gathers. That LMU team had one NBA player while Michigan had at least 6-7 future NBA players yet LMU ran them off the court in the highest scoring NCAA tournament game ever. Along with the famous Bo Kimble free throw this game was the most emotional and incredible game I've ever seen. Hank Gathers RIP
Every time they cut away from the game, Loyola Marymount goes on a run.
LMU gets that ball inbounded SO fast after every Michigan make, and the point guard is on the run by the time he receives it. This must have been so exhausting to play against if you’re not used to that style.
I played “the system” offense my freshman year because my JV college coach ran it. Practice was all conditioning which sucked, but the games were so fun. I loved shooting 10+ 3’s a game.

LMU's huddle chant before the game at 2:34 was "1,2,3 GET THAT ASS" lol .... and they sure did!
As a lifelong Michigan fan, this one was HARD to watch. Defending National Champs blown out. 149-115. It hurts, but not as much because it was LMU, and almost every fan became an LMU fan after Hank died.
What always amazed me is that nobody, anywhere, was able to copy that LMU system, that it was just this lightning in a bottle phenomenon, never to be repeated. Even Westhead couldn't find it again at other coaching stops. It's almost funny how they sped up every team that they played, suckering them "here's a 3 on 2 break, take it". But it was all a trap.
Billy Tubbs and Oklahoma were playing a similar style at the time. Look at the Sooners scores in the late 80's, early 90s. Especially 1989-90...
@@tuowl0564 The Tubbs style was fast-paced, high-scoring, and explosive but they didn't really copy "The System", which even encouraged other teams to throw a long pass by leaving opponents open near mid-court, covering up the closer ones, to speed them up. Oklahoma would just press the whole length of the court.
I remember I was 18 when this game was played and we only had 1 tv so I didn't get to see it live living with my family but after I heard years later about the tragic live taken of Hank Gathers I started streaming the games and I watched the New Mexico and this game off of TH-cam about 10 years ago I really enjoyed this classic game.
This game scared every team in the tournament.
I would love to see this game without any cutaway stuff. What a whoopin they gave Michigan.

This game is more enjoyable to watch on TH-cam....because I can pause it to get a snack or go to the bathroom. During the actual live broadcast you could only imagine what you would miss. Hell. In a game like this, you should be afraid to blink.
Steve Fisher's game plan for this one goes down as one of the worst coaching jobs in NCAA Tourney history trying to run with that team. Only UNLV was equipped to do it that season.
You're right. In Loyola's next game Alabama was able to slow the tempo down and Loyola barely scraped by with a 62-60 win before getting blown out by UNLV in the West final. Getting back to Fisher's strategy. It was stupid to think his team could run with Loyola. Obviously, Michigan had way more talent on that floor but once they tried to play the up and down game they were doomed.

LMU won a game 181-150 against US International the year before. Does anyone have that video? Does the video even exist?
I've asked around about that including asking the LMU athletic dept, it wasn't televised but supposedly there is a recording from a single camera somewhere. Kevin Bradshaw of US Intl won the NCAA scoring title one year - it was definitely two all-offense teams going at each other.

If you knew LMU’s players, story and college basketball back then you would know that Michigan was definitely the underdog. If they played this game 10 times, LMU wins all ten.
I wish the prior season's UM team could have played this LMU team. Glen Rice might have made this game a little more interesting.
wait why did the shotclock reset in that xavier-georgetown game with 50 seconds left? the ball never changed hands or hit the rim was it because it was loose for a few seconds Georgetown never had possession of it
It reset for some reason after the blocked shot. I don’t think it should have.

Um played in semis in 89 against the illini. Played to their strength. If not for Rice shooting illini win. All michigan had to do was play half court and pound ball inside. Illini from year before againt loyola would have been crazy. Illini had the legs. Coild they have been able to deny the 3? I think so. 130 to 120 for each team would have been easy to see.
The "Flying Illini" against this Loyola Marymount team would've been must see Tv. That Illinois team was athletic and played great defense. Not sure who would win

I miss when college gyms like The Pyramid in Long Beach would be the host sites for regionals. It gave the games more of a collegiate feel. But the NCAA, the soulless money hungry machine they are, enough is never enough to exploit the source of the income, so everything is in cavernous major venues that don't get half full nowadays.
Really? Why would they pick a venue if people aren't going to fill up? Empty seats cost money, no matter what the event is.

As a Michigan fan this was a depiction of how bad of a coach Steve Fisher was. The decision to run with Loyola Marymount was an awful game plan and just poor judgment. Steve Fishers teams had talent and that was the only reason he was able to make two Final
Fours. The interim national title in 1989 was just that, he took over a team at the right time and luckily they had Glen Rice.

Michigan went to 76 title game with Ricky Green a 5'10 guy from chicago public league who was too small and another 6'7 string bean from chicago Phil Hubbard. Detroit has tons of talent so getting Webber was biggest. Howard another chicago kid was a late bloomer like Terry Cummings was. King from Texas. Rose? Look at Izzo. He gets the only 1 title rap but he is only getting the scraps. Michigan in late 80s was loaded with big guys. Fab Five was getting these guys cause the cupboard was empty. If Wolverine s could keep players like izzo they could have won 3 titles in last 8 years. I don't understand why you recruit a 1 and done that takes a spot for a guy that will be there for 3 years to help your program. Irish had Pat Cougnington as a baseball pitcher on scholarship. He asked Baseball coach if he could play basketball. Coach said you ask him I have no idea if he even knows you. Brey did. Brey said you can go through walkons tryouts like the others. If you seceded I have to have baseball coach give you permission. He made Team as walkon cause he had a scholarship already. Then he was offer by Orioles a 4 year 4 million offer with 1.5 bonus. He turned it down. He then went from end of bench to play at end of first year. Then from 8th guy to 6th man in so year. Started ar jr when Jerian Grant was kick off team cause bad grades. He was on track to graduate in 3 years but wanted to play with grant for Sr. Year. Grant had to get through last half of year and summerschool not knowing is student court would allow him to be eligible
. Connington turned down another offer. 8 million with 3.5 bonus that he turned down but was able to sign a minor league deal for minor league team 750 dollars a month. Grant was cleared and they played great losing to Undefeated Kentucky in Elite 8 by 2. So I did tell you he is a 6'5 white guy from Boston who always wanted to play Basketball at Notre Dame. In final college game he outrebounded 7foot Towns and 6'10 ? . He ends up getting picked in 2nd rd by Celtics playing 2 3 years . Them Portland? PLAYED with bucks and won Slam dunk contest. This kid turned down millions to play his dream sport. Only happened cause he knew that if no Basketball or no baseball. He had a degree to fall back on. Caligari, Kentucky coach aren't doing half these kids any favors. Look at The Kentucky players who have left in year or two since his career. Who many have played for 5 years? I bet only 30% make it . The others? Dud they finished school? If you get injured the schools will still keep you on scholarship ti let you get degree. The whole money thing is bs. When Duke had 4 sophs go in early200ps. That was bad for College sports.
