A little info, Lackadaisy is based off a 2006 webcomic by Tracy Butler. The comic is full of well-written historical 1920s facts on the era and the artwork is amazingly detailed also beautiful. Rocky & Freckle are cousins and was raised together by Freckle mother who is this stern Irish Catholic lady, The Savoys are Creole Cajuns siblings works for the Marigold hotel/ revival speakeasy along with Mordecai who used to work for the Lackadaisy speakeasy under Altas before his murder. Ivy is Altas goddaughter whose father was close to Altas.

But Tracy mentioned that she will get back to making more chapters once she isn't so busy with other responsibilities, especially when it comes to indie animation production. I still recommend checking out the comic because this series has so much more to offer than just the Pilot.

1. The creator of the Lackadaisy comic originally wanted the characters to be human, but them decided on them being anthro cats because it allowed the art to achieve the "flow" she was going for. She even goes into detail about it in videos and/or livestreams and you can tell from it that her technical skill as an artist is *incredible* 2. The comic has been around for a *while* , I only discovered it around ~2018 , but its been around since 2006.
This is the literal OG of "started on the internets to become a commercial indie". Lackadaisy has been a thing for seventeen years and on DeviantArt for fourteen. It might be cutesy in style but the time period thematics are pretty accurate in more of Don Bluth than Disney way, and so are the personalities. The animal choices are also deliberate, the comic started as humans, but cats simply fit the art style and animation goal better, and also better translate the Bluth/Bakshi style much more cleanly. Not really gonna into the story since it's been literally almost twenty years in the making but there is a TON of lore under the hood, and should this go mainstream hopefully that will stay mostly intact, since Butler has kept the rights close to the vest.
I dont know if you plan on reading the webcomic, but a couple of minor points: Viktor used to be one of Mitzi's main bodyguard/runners; he was her best muscle. but he got injured and now as you see, he is the bartender and he isnt too thrilled about it lol Mister Sable is the owner of the stone quarry that the fight took place in, hence his concern about the use of dynamite and machines. Rocky is not very fond of Sable (for reasons i dont know yet), which is why he crashed through the sign with an evil smile on his face and went nuts destroying his quarry. I dont know if you watched past the end credits scene, but near the end of the video, you can see a picture of Sable looking at his poor quarry with sad eyes.
From my understanding, the construction lines being left in are meant as a stylistic hat-tip to the sort of animation from the 60s and into the 80s where xerography was used to speed up the work of animation by printing the artist's linework onto the cels directly before coloring. It sped up the process, but in a lot of those old cartoons, there are places where the lines are still visible. So kind of like games/shows like Cuphead that are trying to evoke the vibe of old rubber-hose style animation, Lackadaisy is trying to evoke a similarly early style (which I think dovetails very well with the themes of sentimentality and nostalgia in the story). (Overall, I feel like there's a very strong influence from the old Don Bluth cartoons, like The Secret of NIMH and An American Tail. Not just in the design of the animal characters, but in the color palette. I've always loved the more subdued colors of those cartoons, and there was a particular *sparkle* it allowed them to capture that is very similar to what we see in the opening.)
I'm so glad I watched this reaction, I had no idea this existed. So now I'm watching the official pilot on their channel and HOOBOY am I excited to see where this story goes!! ProZD absolutely KILLING it as Mordecai, not to say anything less of the other voice talent as they all did AMAZING work here!!
The etymology for "spirits" when referring to alcohol is an interesting one. It refers to the old time belief that alcohol was part of magical substance that constitutes for life. This is what people used to explain why alcohol would make people feel warm after enjoying some and also why people would start behaving atypically. It was believed that the state of drunkenness was caused by enjoying too much "spirit" as in you're getting possessed. Although this explanation has been dropped a long time ago, the word stuck around in the same use. So it does turn out that alcohol "spirit" and ghostly "spirit" have mutual history.
Glad you two got to this! I love Lackadaisy and have been into the comic since about 2010 a bit off and on. I do wonder if some people's feelings about Rocky's poetic intro about the Mississippi in various reactions and comments have to do with how familiar they are with the south and the big river's place in story and song in parts of the US, because his poem calls back to a lot of country/folk songs and US literary 'classics' I grew up with even though I never actually lived near the Mississippi personally. It deliberately is like the opening to something Shakespearean, or an old musical or play in general.
One thing I want to point out about the art style that many people don’t realize. The sketch lines are fully intentional. If you look at some older Disney animated movies you’ll see the same thing. For example, watch a clip or two from the Aristocats. I’ve always love the inclusion of those lines and it makes me so happy to see more projects going with that style nowadays.
Ofc what I'm gonna mention isn't the same but this reminds me of lots of my drawings, often I also leave in guidelines etc. simply bc it can look better imo and honestly I like that that's smth several people and even companies do :)

I remember reading this back in the day on Tumblr and it was so good! I was caught up then ignored it for a bit to build up more chapters to read, but then the announcement it was getting animated happened. It always left me wanting more, I wanted to know more of the characters and the story and just ugh, it was so good! I'm so happy to be able to see this story again in its new form
To be honest with you both, this project “Lackadaisy” has taken up around 10 or 7 years of the making that the production seems to gain momentum with the use of their web comic that it is based on. As it’s the biggest project that is like Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss that take time and effort to make the series shine to new audiences or bring old audiences from the comics to see a animation that never been done before. With the addition of having “Rough Lines” for each character moving is showing style from the era of cartoons that use line drawing experience. So it seems great to use and show style from past to future versions of animation. Also the voicing for each character is a perfect representation of the VA personality that sparks the mood of characteristic traits for showing. Like Rocky is voiced by Michael Kovach who done Angel Dust from Hazbin Hotel’s Pilot and N from Murder Drones. As each character showing being feral when being excited or changing to anger. It seems to be a animal instinct of their behavior to change. Frickle seems to be like Moxxie from Helluva Boss with a gentle soul but can get his hands dirty if he is giving something to do. With all said, I can’t wait to see more from this series and reactions from you both 😄 there are comic dubs if you want to see Ep 1 early or wait till the series shine out there. And also congratulations on that many subscribers, I hope more to come and you both keep up smiling to the community.
This is probably my favorite TH-cam animated show that's been made. From the animation, to the characters and especially the world. Oh, and the pacing too. All the other ones seem to be hyperpaced and "in your face" with random things happening and rarely any real direction. *cough cough* VizziePop *cough cough.*

A part of Rocky's unhinged glee here is that he actually has feelings for Mitzi. Mitzi kind of has an on and off relationship with Mr. Sedgwick Sable. The owner of the quarry that Rocky destroyed. Basically Rocky was having a grand time breaking Sable's toys out of abject jealousy.
This was actually the time Alastor is suppose to have been from, the roaring 20’s AND New Orleans. I think Angel Dust was from the 20’s/30’s with how he uses a uses a Tommy gun and such.
Seeing how this takes place during Prohibition in the 1920's, I am honestly curious about what this world's version of WWI would have been. Maybe the orange cat was a soldier in the trenches and suffers from PTSD.

But don't let that fool you; plenty of boys did fight in WWI; Momcilo Gavric of the Serbian Army fought in WWI when he was just eight years old. Eight years old and fighting in the most chaotic and destructive world war; we tell kids who don't cry when they skin their knees what little troopers they are, but man, that kid was THE little trooper.
Freckle is 18 but still too young to be in WWI. Viktor was in it, and there is another character in the comics who was a nurse in WWI. I think the war will feature as at least a background theme for some of the characters.
I just realized, out of every comment and reaction video, no one has said anything about Viktor gripping the shattered glass from the shot in his hands 😂

Lackadaisy will have a season 1 but Tracy has said she is not gonna turn it over to Hollywood or a big animation studio cause she doesnt want to have to fight to get the rights back to her series and she doeant want it to used as a tax write off then stuck somewhere to never be finished the first season will be on youtube. She has merch you can buy and all the money she gets goes to the animators, voice actors and anymore people she needs to pay. Season 1 will follow the webcomic
So prohibition ends in 1933 which is 6 years away from this point. So I wonder if they will be able to get back up before then and what happens afterwards.
It seemns to be a tragic Comedy? It has good Jokes, but you constanly feel at danger, and that the Danger is real. And there seemn to be some type of delusion Element whit two of the Charakters, the Hero, and the Lady. There all dream of gloriouse times, eighter in there past, or dreams. I wonder if thats used as motivation, or just as a tragic Element what might even lead towards there downfall. Ivys Voiceactress sounds so cute, I loved her short bursts of exitement. Not sure what I think of the Animation, cause it kinda shaked every few Seconds? Its a bit anoying, but might just be part of the Style.

Rocky reminds me of Blitzo with how crazy he is and dismissive of others. The other guy reminds me of Moxxie where he is shy and nervous until he has a good n in his hand and starts going on a rampage.
Trust me Lackadaisy isn't anything like Helluva Boss. Since it was around way longer as a webcomic before Helluva Boss was even a thing. The only thing that makes them alike is that there both indie animations. But besides that there totally nothing alike.

I want to repeat the words a more senior sergeant told me back in my army days. To paraphrase, I'd like him more if he'd shut... you can probably guess the rest. But yeah, it's growing on me now. We do have diverse personalities. I can see this show going places.
I think my favorite characters are the girl that tells him lookouts shouldn't make noise, and glasses guy that uses what I'd call high efficiency in vocabulary.

War did happen, freckles is 16 so he was not in it but the bartender from the speakeasy was viktor. Atleast from what I gathered reading the comics

It seemns to be a tragic Comedy? It has good Jokes, but you constanly feel at danger, and that the Danger is real.
And there seemn to be some type of delusion Element whit two of the Charakters, the Hero, and the Lady. There all dream of gloriouse times, eighter in there past, or dreams.
I wonder if thats used as motivation, or just as a tragic Element what might even lead towards there downfall.
Ivys Voiceactress sounds so cute, I loved her short bursts of exitement.
Not sure what I think of the Animation, cause it kinda shaked every few Seconds? Its a bit anoying, but might just be part of the Style.
A raspberry is that fart sound made by putting your through your lips and blowing. So yes, she was "swearing" for a 19 year old in the 20s.

Rocky reminds me of Blitzo with how crazy he is and dismissive of others.
The other guy reminds me of Moxxie where he is shy and nervous until he has a good n in his hand and starts going on a rampage.

Trust me Lackadaisy isn't anything like Helluva Boss. Since it was around way longer as a webcomic before Helluva Boss was even a thing. The only thing that makes them alike is that there both indie animations. But besides that there totally nothing alike.

@@marquisepixley684 It's the thespian. He just irritates me. But, upon rewatching, his lyrics aren't bad. Quite well written. I want to repeat the words a more senior sergeant told me back in my army days. To paraphrase, I'd like him more if he'd shut... you can probably guess the rest. But yeah, it's growing on me now. We do have diverse personalities. I can see this show going places.
I think my favorite characters are the girl that tells him lookouts shouldn't make noise, and glasses guy that uses what I'd call high efficiency in vocabulary.
