This is great info, I especially needed to know how much to use and what kind was helpful too. You can get on a very small raft and float on top of the pond water and sprinkle the bentonite on top of the water itself, the clay will disperse and sink down. I will now know to line the sides of the pond at the top rim, thank you. Iv been told how to do this and never did it cause I wasn’t give a few specifics. This is great info
I wanted to add a small natural pond to my yard (6ftx3ftx3ft) and just sprinkled bentonite all over the walls and bottom then I filled it. Holds water just like that. Thanks for the video
Thanks…I’m gonna hopefully put some at the bottom of my 1ft of Arizona clay bottom with a little small rock when I get my pond dug….because we have sink holes here.
Fence off med size chunks of the pond and put about 20 hogs on it, keep it wetted down, after a couple of days start adding some dry grasses or hay to the soil. After 2 weeks move the hogs to another area and do it again. Do this until the hogs have had 2 weeks on all areas to hold water. This way is cheap and works well.
I'm sold on the idea. I have a natural pond about 50ft x 50ft. It fills up in rainy season then the water slowly goes way down to about 15ft wide by July or August, but stays there till next season. I'll wait to the lowest point, pump it all out and seal the entire thing with bentonite. I think Ill rototill it in,then compact it. I'm going to add an oxygenation and pump in the bottom and filter. If it holds I'll add plants, rocks and eventually fish. I want to try and make it full of life with plants, fish, turtles and frogs etc.
If you get on a tiny raft and get in the pond on it you can empty the bentonite right on top of the water and it will disperse itself and drop down and seal. By the sounds of it it seems you may want a tighter seal then you can do all the extra work but if your pond is full now, you could just try this method for a pretty darn good seal.
Gary says 45-89 pounds is a good rough estimate. It will also depend on the depth and the soil condition of your pond. Larger and deeper ponds will require more bentonite to penetrate deeper into the walls and bottom, and also you will need to use more if the pond has a lot of rocks in the bottom. Good luck on your pond project!
Just redug my pond. I was told if I put this down it will seal it? Also my pond seemed to go from 6' to 2' on the surface like the bottom raised up. Wil this prevent that from happening again? I'm going to have koi in it. Thank you
@@ufc9166 the bags are about 14 cents a pound so a 100lb is 14 dollars and usually there is 24 bags per pallet so around $340. If the material is found locally you save the freight. Nice vid. Question: I have a pond sized at 75% of an acre. It’s about 7 feet deep during rainy season, and just a few months later, half dry with the remaining water about ankle high. I have no idea where the leak is. What should i do?
Grandpa said pigs will seal a pond. The most common causes of leaks are roots, snake , frog, crawdad tunnels. Pigs will eat em all and their feet will pack the holes tight. I'd suppose you could pour a bag or two in their waller and they'd be more than happy to help. Just imagine how soft it'd get their hide.

I have a 4 acre pond. I'm not sure what my problem is exactly. But the man who dug it seemed to know what he was doing but it seems we have to keep buying chunks of concrete to put in the spillway, anyone know why?
I dug a pond in very sandy soil and added natural clay. The clay did not really work so bought 2400lbs of Sodium Bentonite and that stuff worked. The Sodium bentonite once wet stays in place way better than the clay I dug.

If your pond isn’t holding water, then it needs to be sealed. There are a couple of different ways to seal ponds, we used bentonite and it worked fine for us.
How long do the bentonite clay lasts in the pond after its application , will it last for a couple years or more, please share me your experience regarding this.
Thank you sir ..whether granules or the powdered bentonite do you prefer in using in the ponds .. will it not get washed away in the slopes during heavy rains ? How thick should I apply it, my pond size is 150×30×10 with rocky uneven surface
@@the_duker_dude I might make things easier by mixing it 1/2 &1/2 bentonite and regular dirt and spread it with a manure spreader. Just around the edges might not be enough. Also wholly depends on actual rain received.
This method isn’t right for all uses, but our pond is holding water just fine since my husband sealed it with bentonite. I wish you the best with your pond, I am sure you will find something that works best for you.

@honeybroomfarm Do you have any updates? I plan on trying this on my pond this week. Love the video! Thanks
We are planning on update video, just haven't had a chance, yet. The pond is doing good. Gary stocked it with some fish and they are thriving.

I was able to buy 2 pallets of left over sodium bentonite but cant find any locally. My soil is very sandy and this stuff works.

@@rebeccaw8820how much Bentonite is needed for a pond sized at 3/4 of an acre?
Great video. Thanks for posting it!
Anyone know where the cheapest bentonite clay is for this? I also have a slow leaking pond…
I've searched and Co-Op was $19 for 50lb bag.
Do you recommend compacting the surface or working the bentonite in as well versus top dressing? Thanks
If you are starting from scratch and don't have a pond mix it into your soil with a roto tiller.
Thanks for helpful video!
Thank you for watching. Our pond is holding water (and fish) really well and I hope yours does, too!
Thank you
I got an acre n half pond. How much I need? I got fish to, will it kill um?
Can I use this in fish pond
I had fish in my pond and was made from sodium bentonite and clay mix.

Yes. It is safe to use fish. Let the bentonite settle and start working first.

I was just wondering where I can get some. Unfortunately the wind was blowing when you were saying where you could get it.
He said your local co-op
Most Farm Supply companies
Your local farmers co-op should sell bentonite. That’s where we got ours.
What is a local co-op? I am looking for this locally, I am in NC.
A co-op is like a hardware store with mainly stuff and equipment for farmers and ranchers.
Farm and ranch supply store. You might check with Tractor Supply if you have one nearby.
How do I get bentonite
Check with your local farm supply store. If you are in USA, your local farm Co-op wil have it.
Sooo... Did it work?
Yes, yes it did. Gary ended up stocking fish in it.
How much did this cost? Seems really expensive
50lb bag is 16 bucks at our coop in tn.

No it’s completely safe just like clay soil that is already in many ponds naturally

Permanent as far as I know. There are ponds on the prairie in Colorado that were sealed in the late 1800’s still holding water.
