- Three old farts meet one new camera in this first attempt at recording something that isn’t a complete write-off even though the visual stabilisation, selfie angle and field of vision are all inferior to the old camera which decided at random whether it would bother to record the audio… or not.
So, here we are with a Wylex on the wall, a Lewden under the arm, a Sony ZV-1 in our hands, and an Axiom sub-board that some idiot seemingly didn’t know how to knock holes into. Brace yourselves for half an hour of… people… doing their dull day job.
BAM!
Yes, Linda and Dan join me and my hangover doing the job I hate - retrofitting a consumer unit. With SBS now defunct, Lewden are our new go-to for consumer units, so let’s take a closer look at their wares along with some Doncaster Earthsure Dan’s got hold of.
The builders who walloped in that Axiom board had offered to upgrade DB1 even though they had admitted to the homeowner that they weren’t electricians. How kind of them to offer such a value-added service! Fortunately, the homeowner wasn’t an idiot and didn’t want to leave his electrical safety in the hands of unqualified morons - which is why he called in we qualified morons. The other end of that armoured cable went to another Axiom board and that too was gash.
This is the first video to be filmed with the Sony which lacks stabilisation meaning it’s all been done in edit and looks a little wobbly in places. There’s also some annoying audio between 16:33 and 17:48 where the mic worked loose and was tapping on the camera. Pah! I’ll get used to it eventually… or I’ll throw it out of the window!

i do hope this new sudden love for lewden is not some suttle unhand advertising at play here.
I reached out to all manufacturers recently to try and secure AFDD samples. A few played ball, one told me to bugger off, another said they'd be game then pulled out when they realised my content wasn't sanitised, the rest ignored me completely. With Lewden, the UK CEO rang me in person and invited me to their plant for a day to tour it and talk to their technical chap. They gave me something more important than money; they gave me their time. That's why I'm now buying their products.
As soon as I saw the Axiom board I was hoping it was going to be combined into the Lewden… oh the relief 😮💨
Good Christ: Axiom - if Poundland made protective devices, eh?
A very nice smart professional job, excellent work guys.
Definitely an upgrade on what was there before!
I was about to comment, why not get rid of it and put the swa into the new DB 👍 then you did it.
I like that she wears ear protection when you are speaking haha😂😂

David, I appreciated your thoughtfulness by including The Illustrated Nigel Marsh 2024 calendar in shot on the kitchen wall( next to the CU cupboard), just to show there was no animosity between you when he pushed off to pursue his new career 😂.
You should see his July pose - PHWOAR!

Have you got any nudes of nige! Get his snap for me please Dave cheers
I can't believe Dave cheaped out and went to Portugal to film on location instead of spending half a million quid for special effects like the other episodes.
It bloody rained too.
Wonder if John Ward / flameport would be interested in old and unusual boards, he has a number of great videos on that sort of stuff!
JW is, no doubt, a connoisseur of such vintage tech, but like me, probably lacks the space to accommodate it for storage/display.
Spring in the garage DB is from the poor mangled holesaw.
Could be. If so, they used the holesaw like a hammer!
@@dsesuk Looks like they've tried to enlarge a hole that was already there with one of those shallow starrett cutters. Not sure how exactly they managed to cock it up quite to that degree though!
The holes in that Axiom board look like they were stitch drilled. Presumably the onanist who fitted it didn't have a hole saw
They had no holesaw and no clue. The fact they bought Axiom from Toolstation betrays them as being the builder bodgers they really are.
Clueless attempt.
Tax deductable work trip to Portugal, quick do some filming 😂 hope you had a nice time.

Everything on the company CC as refreshment and entertainment.
Thanks Dave love the content, please keep it going, I totally agree with the supper neatness of consumer units cables cut to size when dressed in to mcb/rcbo’s this can hinder you when testing completely unnecessary.
There is a standard when it comes to making a neat job but you all ways tick the boxes
Cheers
Matt
Cheers Matt. I shall blow your donation on booze rather than time spent making boards neat!
Nice to see you done the SWA gland in the ATEX style with no shroud.
You know when you open the shroud and stick it onto the cable, then it somehow falls off without you noticing until after you've terminated the bugger?
Well... that.
David, LIVE Electrical are now the closest to what SBS was. Live were almost a parallel company to SBS.
I believe SBS and LIVE were from the same factory. Anyway, I'm a Lewden boi now!
10:15 Why is there a picture of Nigel on that calendar..? 😋
Nah, Nige was always hairier and slower than one of those things.
Dave you’re the best…..’’Smash the living shit out of it’’ 😂😂😂😂 I’m pissing myself laughing
Years ago when you swimming around in your dads 8all5ack Doncaster Cables were the exclusive suppliers to the electricity boards
Ah, so they have a legacy going back a good while... at least to before my dad flushed me around his U-bend and into my mother.
Well that’s one way of putting it, I started my apprenticeship at the MEB in 1974 so yes a long time ago

The 40/45A fuse holder and base were slightly larger than the 5A-30A and would have to have a larger aperture. I remember Doncaster Cables being a CEF-owned brand like Tamlite RPP etc. You seem disappointed that consumer unit brand has gone it seems a very contested market now.
I'm disappointed SBS have gone as they had a good product, but yes, it is a crowded space and often one with seemingly little innovation between brands. If it wasn't for the fact they all offset their busbar cage clamps a few millimetres off each other, we'd be able to mix and match what we plop onto the DIN rail!
Hope you’re having a fantastic holiday in Portugal.
It fucking rained Sean. Every day.
Spain this week has been a dream 😮
Dave, that’s an idea for the colleges etc to take older apparatus, I tried it last year with my local college and when I showed them what I had I was more less told to f-k off and not waste their time” so with college attitudes like that no wonder nobody wants to give in anything
Yeah, it's a shame, but I imagine that will happen unless you happen to get someone on the phone who is themselves enthusiastic about the idea.
@@dsesuk agreed, the college I attended as an apprentice was excellent, they had a massive workshop with diesel generators, AC/DC motors, switchgear etc etc, unfortunately it’s now houses and the replacement college is basically an office block
That’s a shame that they didn’t take it……I would have, but i teach in Canberra Australia

Well, stick your finger up your asshole and whistle my friend, a big AFDD drop is in the works.
Bizline are also stocked at Rexel
Makes sense, Denmans is a Rexel brand
Great video as always David . Good to see Dan with you even though he did get the ethos MFT . 😂
What was the EICR problems that warranted the board change ? That fuse box looked almost new , no earth on the lighting and wooden back boxes doesn’t warrant a board change in my opinion. If the customer asked for it fine. Otherwise I didn’t see anything wrong with it . Also the extra 45amp fuse to the right off the main switch I believe was to protect the main switch? I remember seeing a similar fuse box back in the mid nineties in a my mums friends house I asked her husband who was a spark and that’s what he told me. But I’m not entirely sure if he was correct or not?
The client wanted it modernised Sean. They're redecorating the place and want various moves and changes which will all require RCD protection to be compliant, so it makes sense to have that at source.
Oh ok I was sure what was going on other than what the video showed.or did I miss something?
Which plonka decided to call the cable earth sure how to over exaggerate a product g😂
Hi Dave. Hatton Electrical in Stratford have some Earthsure on show so I assume they are stocking.
Oho! Nice one Ben. I rarely get over that way, but I'll make a special effort if they have it on the shelf.
@@dsesuk Stocking from end of May apparently
I find it hard to believe that anyone has tested or issued any paperwork for the outdoor power DB.
No paperwork was bothered in the installing of that DB - clearly the work of a builder which is why they got the cheapest thing from Toolstation even though the MCB was oversized for the SWA they couldn't install correctly. Apparently they also offered to upgrade DB1 even though they told the homeowner "they're not electricians". Well, if they know that, why are they pissing about with the stuff??!
Why waste money on a hole saw when you have a 2lb lump hammer and a big screwdriver? 😜
Which do think is better the earth sure or the Irish twin and earth that you had a roll of?
I liked the Irish cable for its CPC sleeving, however I didn't like the CPC being the same CSA as line/neutral as is standard in Europe. While not a problem on 1mm - 2.5mm cable, I can see it being quite cumbersome on 6mm or 10mm circuits, especially when Irish wiring accessories are based more on the UK style than the European gear. Most switches and sockets are designed for the smaller CPC which limits, or makes it awkward, for our Irish counterparts as I understand it.
Not seen either in person yet, but I'm leaning towards the Irish stuff.
I like the lewden boards. Used to fit them on the sites cause I could get them for £99 + vat for 11 way fully loaded rcbos
It's good gear for the money.
That's a steal! The cheapest brand-name RCBO (Iskra from Slovenia) I can get is €27.90 for one. So the UK price would buy me about three of those, without a board to fit them.
Oi, my mums got them lights too, got the same swirly ceiling aertex too! Hang on, hang on, i recon u have stolen her ceiling!
Hi, 50 amps for the garage supply what on earth were they thinking?
Dunno - the sub board in there fed only sockets and lights with nothing heavy hanging off. Mind you, if they knew what they were doing, they wouldn't have bastardised that armoured termination like they did.
@@dsesuk Hi indeed yes that was shocking.
I did wonder if the submain cable was rated to 50A
Pretty sure lewden are the only offering for bi directional affd rcbos and the bizlines are also sold in rexel, they are mostly re branded knipex so pretty good stuff
Proteus do bi directional Robos
Hope Linda gets well soon at least she hasn’t broke her back like me .
Its great im using it already. Yesss have it
Great video as always Dave! 👍
8:00 use to have one of them fitted with the high current fuse way.
You don't see many about. Dan's hopefully giving it a good home.
Thought u said Nigel wasn't with you who's that on the calender
hi David seeing as there's no cpc on the lights what test you doing on and what you recording on test sheet
For R1+R2, R2, and Zs, the test result is N/A. It's still worth doing an IR test L-N to the main earth bar as a leakage fault could occur between live parts and earth even if that earth isn't via a dedicated CPC in which case the result is (hopefully) in the MegaOhm range.
3:23 Look at Linda’s little finger there - she’s a bit posh for DSES!!!
Good shout. She's always taking the piss out of me for the little finger pose, so it's good you've called out her two-faced BULLSHIT!
Also, thanks for the AFDD paper you sent through!
I mind something about CEF pulling the pin on Doncaster during the family fall out…almost folded Doncaster.
Yess electrical were then born, and now stock it, as they were part of the CEF family…Messy affair.
Interesting. I didn't know there had been bad blood at Cities until I heard the Doncaster thang. Got any more goods on what happened?
Posted a link but it’s vanished?
@@highlandsparkyI think Dave has to approve links to prevent spam
If you also google Doncaster cables a new beginning, there’s a small article regarding the CEF pull out.
I had no idea the electrical industry was such a Cosa Nostra affair. I suppose when you’ve got the Don in Doncaster 😂
Danny is fuming with you 😄
How did you get round no earths in the switches?
Until any rewiring happens, we changed the switches and Class 1 lighting for plastic to clear C2 codings brought up by the report.
Had the same thing 2 yrs ago, compromised with customer to change to plastic switches, remove brass lights and replace with white pendants. This is then mentioned on the eicr comments to warn future users of the issue.
What size was that armoured cable, looked a bit small to be coming off a 50 amp mcb
6mm, so yeah, 50A wasn't the right breaker. I guess Bob the Builder bought the cheapest 'shower unit' they could find at Toolstation before they realised they lacked the tools and skills to fit the thing properly!
Very entertaining, although I'm surprised you haven't chosen Hager as your go-to fuse board! 😂 Seriously though, why not Crabtree Starbreaker or Wylex (Electrium)? 🤔 I really like them Dave. 😊
I like Starbreaker and I have Wylex myself. I've nothing against them; they're good brands, however their price and availability in my area aren't great. I need something readily available off-the-shelf from one of the wholesalers so I can grab parts on the day as needed instead of the faff of ordering gear in. Also, many manufacturers want nothing to do with me and my foul mouth whereas Lewden were generous enough to give me their time a couple of weeks back where I was able to tour their facility and talk with their top tech man. Lewden tick the boxes on price, availability, quality and the fact they're prepared to give me the time of day, so they get my beer tokens going forward!
Well their name goes with your channel! Lewd-den! Sounds like your man cave! 😂

For the uninitiated, what's wrong with a wooden backbox aside from the difficulty of fitting screws?
Most were splintered and no longer holding the switches securely.
@@dsesuk ah ok thank you, so primarily a mechanical thing rather than an electrical thing then?
I was dredging my brains trying to come up with a reg that said that backboxes must be metal but that made no sense given you get plastic ones!
@@tomcardale5596 I'm not aware of any regs that would cover the material of a backbox, although I wouldn't be surprised if there was something somewhere about material meeting certain requirements for combustibility. In this case, some were just falling apart and the switches weren't secure. As the homeowner's redecorating, it made sense to swap them all out and be done with it.

As for Doncaster cable, yeah they were owned by cef, but when the dad died who owned cef, the usual infighting starts where there's money involved, some had the cef brand plus other parts of the business and others started yess and also took Doncaster cables plus some overseas companies. Usual family shit.
Also I know domestic lights need RCD protection, however is there any point in this case with no earth in the circuit.
It's amazing how execution of a will can divide a family. Once any in-fighting starts, the only people who end up winning are the solicitors. As for RCD protection on the lighting, the lack of a CPC makes it especially important to have. An RCD has no connection to earth and doesn't rely on a CPC to be present or even the main earthing to be working. Let's say someone in the future wants to change a light fitting here and they fail to isolate the circuit. They grab the line wire and current flows from source, through them, down their step ladder and into physical earth. In this case, presence of a CPC or supplier's earth isn't relevant even if present, but the RCD will detect the current down line isn't returning via neutral and will duly click off. Not all 'earth leakages' happen down a CPC.
I use EV ultra from Doncaster exclusively from yesss
Worse than double glazing or used car sales men. Selling a pensioner a new board when that Wylex would have seen him out.
Arghhhhh tradesmen. Come on trading standards.
Pensioner?? The homeowner's in his thirties! Don't let those old school granny lights and brass switches fool you; they were the previous owner's aesthetic! This guy wants moves and changes, so RCD protection is needed at source if any alterations are to be signed off.
