- The mansplaining is strong in this vid where I swing by Linda’s lair to help her figure out what wiring is where following her knocking lumps out of the walls. If you’re going to persevere with this one, expect an awful lot of waffle as we try and trace the history of this here wiring.
Errata: The RadioTeleSwitch (RTS) signal is piggybacked on BBC Radio4 longwave, not FM. The BBC are closing their LW stations with Radio4 itself set to stop broadcasting on this band in 2024.
Thanks to Wöhler UK for lending Linda their VE400 borescope which came in jolly handy, and to Chauvin Arnoux for letting us play with their new CA6117 MFT - there’s more to come on that thing.
I’m sorry about the drunken coffee shouts; I hope nobody named feels any of it was disrespectful! It seemed like a good idea when I turned up to the party with my camera and ten-pack of Strongbow but reviewing it through the fog of a hangover the next day resulted in a few ‘oh lordy!’ moments…

9:21 David that white meter was installed on 15/01/1999 per the 1999 paperwork, removed meter 09851, fixed meter 03656, see 9:51 meter number DF87K 03656.
I don't know why I didn't match the meter number. Interesting that they installed a 1987 analogue meter in '99.
@@dsesuk Shows how reliable they were. I guess those meters weren't inexpensive and they rightly saw no point in throwing away perfectly functional gear. The previous meter change note showed fitted meter '851', and the one removed to fit the current one was '09851' - same unit, I'm sure.
Doubtful any smart meter removed would get reused today. Not convinced they'll operate for over 35 years, either.
@@Monkeh616 Yeah, those analogue things were well engineered. Where I've seen them redeployed previously, they've had a sticker to show they've been checked or refurbished, so the 1987 date threw me on this one. Also, 1987 sounds like a long time ago (and I remember being there), but I guess back in '99 this equipment wouldn't have been considered terribly old or old fashioned even though digital meters were hitting the market by the Millennium.

#1 Linda is a legend. Love seeing her on the channel

#3 Around 30 mins in you cut a single that may or may not be a current carrying neutral. You could have used a clamp meter to determine if it was or wasn't.
#4 Love the videos.
You're incorrect about everything... except point #3.
Wow Linda has got her work cut on that tasty project. I’m sure it will all come good when it’s finished. Oh and a lovely old testers on show wonderful.

I find UK electrics so fascinating and really appreciate the explanations or the various regs.
Enjoying your bollocking Dave and Linda.
I feel the same watching non UK stuff, I worked in the US for a bit, UK sparks like to diss their electrics but if done to the NEC it'ss quite safe. The weakest link is the 'home grade' receptacles, anyone working in US/Canada should be doing spec grade recepts, they actually hold the plugs LOL
@@TheChipmunk2008 It's the obsession with wirenuts that worries me, I just don't trust the things not to come undone.
@@TestGearJunkie. good brands typically don't... but it's difficult for european trained sparks to grasp they do absolutely NO testing (that is a major failing). Canada has some interesting hybrid connectors, brass sleeve with a screw, a bit like UK choc blocks but with only one entry, then a plastic cap threads on the top
wagos are taking over tho
@@TheChipmunk2008 Yeah, Wagos are ok, use them a lot. Can't get my head around no testing, either. What would I do with all my MFT's..? 😆
The Dobbie McInnes engine indicator. I used one of these at Tec back at the begining of the 1980's. You connect the pressure port to the engine cylinder and the pressure drives a stylus up and down. You connect a cord to the engine connecting rod and that pulls the cylinder on the indicator round, against a return spring. The stylus scratches through a white layer on the indicator chart that is wrapped around the cylinder on the Indicator. The stylus then plots the engine cylinder pressure Vs crank position. When you have the indicator diagram you can use it to work out things like burn rate, brake mean effective pressure and gas exchange processes.
Very old technology, originally designed for use on steam engines but, upto the 1980's still used on large engines (big, marine diesels).
Since about 1985 the job has been done with Piezo transducers, optical shaft encoders, high speed data acquisition units and a shed load of computer processing. Same results but easier and faster to get. The downside is that it now takes £100k worth of kit (not including the cost of the engine testbed).
Ah! Thanks for that! It all sounds terribly complicated!
@@dsesuk the hardest part, when we used it on a small, single cylinder, Loughborough Gas Engine, was hooking the string onto the moving connecting rod. It took a bit of getting used to having to move both arms left to right at the same time whilst bringing them together to hook the two ends together.
The other piece of really clever kit was a pantagraph arrangement with two thimble wheels on it. You positioned the fixed end of the pantograph on the origin of the indicator diagram and traced round the line left by the stylus. Once you'd traced the whole line you read of the numbers on the thimble wheels, multiplied them together, and got tge area enclosed by the line. I think the device was called a mechanical integrator. Invented by some fiendishly clever soul, like they did back then.
"WHY WOULD THE BUILDER PUT IN JUNCTIONS" - because they ARE builders !!!LOL
That's true for builders knocking in extensions and thinking they can do the wiring themselves, but new builds are usually to a costed plan, and not one that involves the expense and fiddliness of putting in junctions. Badly terminated screw boxes like these smell more of DIY than being part of the original wiring design.
I was intrigued by the title as to whose cavity you were going to search😂
Wöhler may not ask for their borescope back if they think we've misused it...
Love your discussion of Linda's lady garden, she's very tolerant of you LOL :)
The radioteleswitches I believe run by phase modulation of R4's 198LW droitwitch transmitter, which is sadly being shut down, end of an era for old radio enthusiasts :( Same as Ireland killing Atlantic 252 a while back. Very sad

@@TheChipmunk2008 Cheers old chap - I'll glug that down in the sun later today!
It is very sad that the Droitwitch LW transmitter is being shutdown. Do you have any idea why they decided to use R4's LW rather than the NPL's MSF signal? And could these units technically be adapted to use the latter?
Excellent David (as allways) best coffee shout outs ever thanks .
Your inclusion of Wohler inspection kit reminded me of my Colonoscopy, except afterwards I was given a slice of toast and a cup of tea by a very attractive Filipino nurse.
Great video, I for one found it very interesting... And I'd buy that flat for the balcony alone!
The meter fitted on the 15-01-1999 was indeed a reconditioned meter the start readings on the card verify this as there is already 22605 units on the low register and 07609 on the normal register. We were still reconditioning meters from the probably until digital meters came in round 1990.
That's a Fordham Flushpanel on the bog. I remember them!
great video david & linda at one point i thought nigel was in the room
Scottish Power were doing the same with us. We finally got the smart meter fitted last year because of the pending teleswitch shut-down. If your keeping the storage heaters make sure they put a meter with the off peak terminal or a contactor or your heaters end up on all day or not working at all if the meter fitter doesn't realise.
Damn David. Linda has got at covid prices , at least£1000 of toilet paper in there
Actually, I did keep watching, and I found it interesting too!
I have a radio teleswitch which switches my whole house to "off peak" at about midnight for 7 hours. I await advice from my energy supplier, octopus, but I believe that because I have the low tariff overnight, my day rate is much higher. I think I'll just do away with the off-peak stuff and wire my storage radiators into a spare way in my CU...and hopefully get a better day-rate.
Loved how Linda fekd the holes in the walls! That's real class! I hope you will be showcasing the rewire/additions...but hager? Doesn't she watch your TH-cam channel?
Someone needs a spanking...
Oh, we can't knock Hager - they're a top brand; I just don't like one of their products! Linda was a bit annoyed with herself for not buying Lewden though seeing as they were kind enough to give us both a tour of their UK operations! If you want to avoid a smart meter then you can plonk everything onto a peak board and use timers local to any space/water heaters to dictate when they operate. When I was on Eco7, it was just a tariff that applied to my whole installation. Everything was at peak price for 17 hours, everything dropped to off-peak for seven hours. I had things set so heaters and EV charging automatically clicked on in that 7-hour window without the need for any additional switching equipment. As you say, the day rate is crippling for Eco7, and seeing as I ditched my storage heaters and EV, it wasn't worth me sticking with so I went flat-rate.
@@dsesuk We rate click 'elucian' boards, by scolmore... single module SPD with built inHRC fusing, no need for a separate breaker, runs right off the bottom of the main. Nice din rail mounting blanks too, and everything lines up, no 'italic' circuit breakers
only thing they DO need to add is 32mm k/o's, the 40-32mm adaptor on tails glands tends to make the install bulkier than it really needs to be. Or just no knockouts, we all have holesaws!
You think those holes in the wall are good, you should see what Sammi can do with a hammer 🔨🥴
Good shout David! Thanks!
That had to be either an old AutoTrader or Exchange & Mart stuffed in the wall as they were available in all good (and dodgy) newsagents every Thursday
Electrical archeology is always interesting and is good for teaching younger electricians about the development of electrical installation and its wiring and accessories.
I like a bit of electrical history diving. It's interesting to peel back what's been done over the years.
That garden party was like something from the Addams Family ! LOL
Yeah, why weren't we invited..? 🥳🎉
Love the chemistry and dynamics of these two. Not to say that Nige never had any, he did and quite a lot at that, but this is different 😎
Spot on about the radio teleswitch, There's going to be a mad rush to change all these out. It doesn't affect all 2 rate meters though, some are controlled by a mechanical clock instead. And of course some others are all digital.
Your videos are brilliant
Yes, I quite agree.
Lovely weather for a cavity search, old boy 👍👍👍
i too was upset, just settling down with a bottle of lambrini and a box of the finest mansize tissues, excellent i thought something from davids full on smut collection. deeply annoyed to find two electricians going about some technical investigation. tsk.... had to get the city electrical monthly newsletter out instead 🤪
That was a rapid slide into beverage incapacity at the end 😂
There were a good few hours between my being brightly optomistic of it being a good idea at the start to shitting blood by the end of the night.
Nothing unusual there, then 🤣
Quick question. teleswitch is single insulation yes but it's in an enclosure would you not say. Does a meter cupboard count as mechanical protection?
A grey area so I'm not sure. You require a key to access it, but then those gaining access are ordinary persons such as the homeowner who wants to read the meter. Anywhere else in the home where single insulation is accessible to non-competent persons, would be coded as a C2 on an inspection. It certainly wouldn't meet the requirements for mechanical protection.
For an installation that used to have storage heaters on Economy 7 where they've been removed and the sockets moved over to the "normal" CU, is The RadioTeleSwitch (RTS) still required?
No, the RTS would be redundant. Those who don't want a smart meter can move their off-peak circuits to the peak board and apply Eco7 as a tariff applicable to the installation as a whole. This was how my installation worked - I paid peak pricing for 17 hours on all my circuits, off-peak for seven hours on all my circuits; the switchover being applied as a tariff rather than on physical hardware.
David on form 💪
Hi David radio teleswitches work off radio 4 Longwave transmissions for e gland transmitted from Droitwhich at 500Kw power in Scotland there are 2 transmitters of 50 Kw each at Burghead and Westerleigh you are right those transmitters will be switched off next year
Is Linda in Yorkshire? The meter and radio tele switch belong to Yorkshire Electricity, or is that just a weirdness due to privatisation of UK electricity providers? Thought you were both in very posh Royal Leamington Spa!!!
Linda is indeed out of my league (geograhically and otherwise).
Hiya SAVO... I've got a list of 'Sparky prices' around the UK. Its a summary of several national surveys. Tells you who is charging what, by the hour, and per job etc.

I wish the uk had a reg where jbs are not allowed hidden anywhere, would be a pain for adding on but handy for fault finding.
Thing is, even if there were such a reg, it wouldn't stop DIY'ers and iffy builders/fitters who ignore much of what the regs say anyway. It would just make things more awkward and expensive for those of us who try to follow the rules.
Crikey, Fultons must have got about a bit. Until retirement and buyout 7 years ago, they were one of the 'trusted' local medium-sized players based a mile from me

Gotta ask, is this the same account as "EF (PJSJ Design)" and "EF780"?? I marked you down as a whore on this one because it's screwing with my spreadsheet!
Trying to find a new rental with a bath has been hard work, I prefer them as I have spinal arthritis, and I like to soak in my own crap to ease the pain, maybe I’m doing it wrong?
Personally, I very much like a bath. If I'm in a hotel that has one, I'll always make use of the luxury. At home however, I've not had the means to fill one since ditching my duff central heating ten-years ago, so getting rid of mine was a no-brainer. It's the same at Linda's gaff - without gas for a combi boiler, the only way to fill a bath is by taking up a massive space with a water tank that costs an unholy amount to heat up electrically. It's too expensive for everyday use and too impractical to maintain the means when the property has a limited floorspace. I'm not a bath racist or anything, it's just that water heating without gas or a massive tank is too costly for regular use, and it all takes up too much space for only occasional fiddling with the loofah and stroking of one's submarine.
@@dsesuk We're in a council flat and when they re-did the bathroom a few years ago, they fitted one about 6 inches shorter than what was there before, which is extremely annoying as we can't stretch our legs very much and our knees are out of the water most of the time. Not impressed. But I suppose any bath is better than no bath at all. My mum had the bath taken out and made into a wet room and it just wasn't the same. I like a shower, but there's nothing like a soak on a Sunday, whether we need it or not 🛀
Why are double insulated singles no longer code compliant?? We use them all the time??
Unless I'm missing something, singles are only compliant today if run through the same containment, otherwise you have live wiring with no accompanying CPC and rogue electric fields. Where and how are you using them??
We use double insulated singles with or without a combined cpc.
For lighting within schools, usually installed within cable basket and surface Mount pvc conduit.
Each point on the circuit will be assured to have a cpc via the combined brown with cpc, you can also get blue with earth. The cable is called 6241Y
@@tomorichard Ah, I see. Sorry, I meant singles aren't compliant in this format - i.e., no CPC and buried in walls at less than 50mm. It was more the installation method than the cable that was the problem.
They have being going to switch off the radio four signal for at least 15 years. Maybe this time to get more people forced into "smart meters"
I bought an endoscope off Temu for £11 and it's brilliant
An AC clamp meter would have helped identify if that cable you thought could have been a lighting return was carrying current

Ah, so that was YOUR Jiffy bag of brown ooze!
@@dsesuk I did say my mates, but yes i lied it was mine.
Fuckn' lovely stuff.
I bet the real cavity search began when the cameras stopped rolling, but who searched who 🤔😂
11:00 isn't there an argument that because the single-insulated cables are in an enclosure (the meter box) requiring a "tool" to open, they're OK? I'm not a big fan, because obviously unskilled people are meant to open the enclosure to read the meter etc, but from a regs point of view are you sure it's actually a no-no?
Hm.. I guess one could make that argument if push came to shove although, as you say, access is required for the unwary. It's also in a communal space rather than within the security of the property and can be opened by anyone with a common key. It's not how I would do it.
Due to almost all of the northern isles of Scotland being storage and a lot of the Highlands the satellite switch end date will be continually kicked down the road as nobody will pay to change the heating system.
Schools should play this at careers day. 😂
Get good grades kids, or you could end up like this!

Does anybody know an electrician that can bypass that radio-tele switch?? Nope, didn't think so.
Technically, it's not too tricky Chuck, although as it's network equipment any tampering could land one in hot water - and not the kind you'd want to sit in the bath with. If they do go ahead with the signal switch-off next year, I guarantee they'll do it at peak time to ensure anyone who hasn't upgraded is left stuck on the peak tariff.
Very fortunate to be able to get the freeholders’ permission to do all that internal work. Even with shared ownership sometimes it’s quite hard.
I'm assured it's all above-board and neighbouring flats have made similar alterations out of necessity!

I hope no Asbestos
Not by the time I arrived, althougn I don't know what the plumber ripped out. In a lot of heating appliances, asbestos had been abandoned by this point - most storage heaters don't have it, even those dating back into the 70's. It was used in lower levels in the UK in things like Artex, but even by the late '60's they were rowing back its use in internal fixtures I think.
@@dsesuk Our block was built in 1979/80 and there's asbestos in the void behind the loo here where the sewage and other pipes live. The flat on the other side of the lobby from us had a problem and they took weeks ripping it all out, so we're leaving well alone unless summat 'orrible happens..! By the way we've got an ironing board with an asbestos pad to rest the iron on, it's in perfect condition so we're just leaving it. We never do any ironing anyway 🤣

Greetings from DIN VDE 0100 land.
I think a few countries have a similar thing. Fascinating to see it's still run by valves!
@@dsesuk If you mean the LW transmitter, there aren't many other ways of generating that sort of RF power.
Some useless trivia which Linda might appreciate:
Up until the mid-nineties, a large number of water heaters in Johannesburg 🇿🇦 were remotely controlled via a dedicated VHF radio system. The purpose of this system was not to allow consumers to save money but rather to limit the network load during peak times.
The same system was used to turn the street lights on and off overnight or during storms and was controlled by a custom-built "computer" that had the sunrise and sunset times in memory.
The whole system was designed such that if any of the receivers lost signal, they would default to on (load connected). If I remember correctly, Richards Bay and Port Elizabeth both had similar systems.
Not all water heaters were controlled in this way, some used ripple control en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zellweger_off-peak. It all depended on who delivered the electricity to the premises (City of Johannesburg or Eskom) and in what suburb the consumer was located.
This was, of course, back in the day when the country had both generation capacity and cables to deliver it - but that's way off topic.
I only know this because I worked for the company that manufactured these radio controlled load switches and then for City of Johannesburg looking after similar stuff.
So when you ask a South African where their geyser is, they'll say it's up in the roof and not on the couch 😉.
In Queensland the off peak circuits are controlled by a similar relay system. This system uses a signal modulated onto the 50hz carrier of the mains frequency. This allows the hot water storage units to be turned off and off (amongst other things) the issue is most LED lights flicker when they turn in on 🤦🏼♂️
