Is it worth going forward with day to day content? Well yes! 👍 It seems to me that out of all the main youtube electricians your content is amongst the most appreciated by your viewers. What you put out doesn't need to be massively technical, your subscribers will doubtlessly enjoy the simpler videos too.
This is my favourite type of content, just along on a job being talked through what you're doing and why. It probably makes me strange as a random non-spark but the insight into your world is appreciated. Good luck surviving until December without the booze!
Definitely the best TH-cam sparks channel, no nonsense or promotion rubbish, straight talking and says it how it is, as a spark myself it’s good to see real world work on here instead of click bait, camera effects and paid promotion etc. keep it up 👍
Yeah you are right, you couldn't trust any of the others that recommend stuff, because you don't know if it's any good, or it's good because they are getting a kick back.
The self deprecation and amount of abuse thrown at the viewer is hilarious e.g. the wooden dowels. Love it! Dave will be beating Mr Beast on subscriber numbers in no time. :)

I watch your channel because I enjoy watching you and, dare I say it... Nige! (RIP) I'm not really a fan of these more "popular" youtube channels that are quite frankly overproduced rubbish and clickbaity. Half of the time they focus more on fancy camera angles and stuff that you don't really see much anyway! I hope you continue to stick stuff up, even the day to day jobbing electrician stuff I'd watch tbh.
I like this type of content. Being electrically trained but not a practicing spark, gives me an insight into an electricians day to day activities. I’m thinking of changing careers and find this stuff very interesting. Keep going, I like it, it’s not boring. 👍
Like most people ( I'm sure ) we don't mind seeing the "same" content especially when we like the person ( You ) who's making the content. I enjoy watching how you problem solve and working out how you will do the install. I used to install cables in Schools / Hospitals and Bus Stations and most of the time was trying to find a route and then getting access to offices.

As silly as this sounds this video makes me want to make more everyday content for TH-cam. Sometimes I don’t think it’s the production of the content but the information and the personality in it. I haven’t uploaded many videos because it wasn’t filmed or edited like a pro. So thanks for the motivation dav!
I know what you mean Jimbo. When I started YT, the attraction was the amateur aspect of vlogging; that was kinda the point of the platform when it first started - it was for the masses to make their own content. In recent years however, production has become slicker across TH-cam as a whole, regardless of the subject, and I feel (perhaps wrongly) that audience expectations are now higher, meaning wobbly camerawork and shoddy audio aren't forgiven as much as they perhaps once were. That said, if you enjoy making the content, then just do it and don't worry about whether it's hitting the clicks or raising the sub count.
Wife and I had the same discussion about my channel, but isnt the point that all our channels are essentially vlogs about our working life, what goes right, what goes wrong (very wrong if i remember a certain "karen" video from not so long ago!). Don't ever stop. Biggest issue I have and im sure you and Nick do, is finding time to edit and publish the videos as well as working.
I think so long as putting vlogs together isn't a chore, you should do it for yourself and be damned if there's an audience or not. But yes, finding the time to staple it together is tough. I don't know how Nick manages it with such regularity!

That's a nice trick with the dowels. I usually use the plastic yellow 5mm plugs as they will hold a clip, but I bet not as well as a dowel. You can buy dedicated "pin plugs" as well for that purpose, but I don't think they're any better than the 5mm plugs and cost more.
Yeah, I like them. I tried to introduce Dave to them a few years back but he was having none of it so we stuck to the dowel. It probably is better than using the the plastic ones but who wants to tell ol’ misery Savery that he’s right? The gloating it would generate.

I find it crazy that over the pond you're using 240v AC lighting outdoors. In the US it's common for pretty much all outdoor lighting like that to be done with low-voltage AC 12 V and you just string the cable through as it usually twin lead and the lights have insulation piercing connectors. I've seen a handful of instances where 120 V lighting was used but usually that's more professionally installed conduit etc. underground cable out to sign lights mounted in a professional manner.
It is crazy, and quite unnecessary, yet most spike lights are made in the GU10 form factor. It's hard to find the GU5.3 fittings, so it's either mains voltage or some proprietary non-replaceable thing for the most part.

Mad isn't it? Even if you did want the fuss n' faff of terminating SWA into Wiska boxes, you could still put in a little localised LED driver to power a 12V spike coming off it.

Not sure about the timer, i use Ener-J wifi modules, (where it allows) so the owner can play with the times on the app! Btw, you can get a cover now for solar panels that stops pigeons getting under the panels.

I think they delay in turning on/off with those light sensors is to stop hysteresis, like in old thermostats. I may be wrong!! Sounds good though 😂 enjoy your smoke and a pancake 🎉
I think one criticism when it comes to selv lighting is what happens when the transformer or power supply fails, I have come across a few large outside lighting installs where they have used a very large transformer or a proprietary thing which you struggle to get hold of when they fail. Whereas 230v just needs a cable to the points, so as long as thereis a supply and everything is sound then it makes it easier to replace, retrofit and add to. But overall I agree, i wouldn’t personally want mains voltage round flowerbeds etc
In this case, it's a 12V constant voltage thang which is always easy to get hold of. The headache comes when you buy an off-the-shelf proprietary lighting kit that uses a funny constant current transformer.
Ah but it's the run of the mill boring jobs that are fun to chill out to. And love the work bench. I've been using a £10 fold out table from B&M for years now. No way am I bending over all day, I'm not that way inclined!

I tend to get drivers from Amazon - usually Sebson models although this one wasn't (not sure what it was actually). It's just a vanilla 30W 12V constant voltage model.
David, is there a chance of trying an underground cable detector to locate a break in a cable in a wall as opposed to using an mft and maths to see if it’s: A- quicker B- reliable Ive seen a vxscan on Amazon and the reviews seem to be pretty good.
I've had a couple in the past, but this one's got a nice slim profile. No balls to it, but on something like second fix where you're spinning a lot of accessories into place, it saves some wrist wrenching!

Ah, well that controls the rotating mirror beacons on the roof and it also controlled the illuminated signs on the side. There was supposed to be a video about that, but it was something of a disaster in the end and the project got canned.
Sound that sat nav was trying to get you out of a supermarket car park😂😂😂 I invested in one of the work bench a few years ago and it's still going strong unfortunately I'm not but that's life eh. You will settle into semi retirement and you will start to wonder why you didnt do it years ago.
They've shot up in price, haven't they? I bought mine from B&Q for £40 about 5 years ago. Still going strong, although some wanker didn't set his skill saw depth guage correctly - @ 20mm when cutting 18mm ply. Tsk! Keep up the great work! 🎉

Yeah 12v for garden lights all day, people use swa and 230v because they just don't think. Those tables are good, I got one 18 months ago from Toolstation they were on offer for 60 quid, and like you thought why didn't I get one sooner, and it's great.
Ah, an aborted project I put together last year. It controls my roof beacons and my (now defunct) illuminated van livery. There would have been a video about it, but it never worked right.
When I've done that setup with outside lights the customer more often than not, then decide they want the ability to override at will. From anywhere.I've done all kinds trickery involving electric gate remote key fobs operating contactors, GSM controllers, you name it. Fortunately much easier these days with off-the-shelf solutions and Quinetic switches. My problem was, when a customer asks "can I", I never learnt to say "no, you fuckin' can't".

What’s the model of the powered screwdriver you were using Dave? I’ve got the Bosch Go but that looks a bit more ‘portable’ will have to take a look at it as haven’t bought tools for a while 😅
There's a link in the description. I can't speak for it's longevity or reliability, and it has no torque whatsoever, but for basic zipping and unzipping of accessories, it's a decent weight and size. I can keep this in my hip tool pouch unlike my Bosch which is too heavy and ends up staying in the toolbox.

I think my favourite video was when the plasterer sealed your cable (with f*cking HEAT written on it) in the ceiling. Maybe get kitchen fitters to have a crack first just to screw up your day for laughs?
Genuine question don't you get massive voltage drop using 12v for bigger garden runs? Remember as an apprentice having issues with mr16 halogens. If possible could the timer have been installed inside then an enclosure with driver and photocell in the lid? There's pirs out there with adjustable setback timers ie turns on at dark o'clock and switches off 5 minutes later. Tip for flex on a rough wall i use linian clips. Keep the videos coming. Even if it's been done before every job is different so the content will be different.
The volt drop can be a problem but not at this sort of length, especially if the feed cable has a larger CSA. Here I went for a 1.5mm 2-core whereas smaller runs may only require a 0.75mm cable. For LED lamps, a volt drop that's too high may see some flickering or other such ill operation, but then some models of lamp may be less susceptible to such, after all, any 12V lamp will be dropping the voltage lower internally and their regulator may have a wide window of input voltage (say, 8 - 16V or something). I've used the adjustable sensors before; I have one myself, but the issue there is they tend to shut off a certain time after turning on. My garden lights go off after two hours which means they're on until 18:00 in the depths of winter and 23:30 in the height of summer. That doesn't really work here where the client wants them on at dusk and off by midnight whatever the time of year. I did consider Linian clips for this one, but I find Linian hopeless to size for a job. Their clips are always stated in mm and I never know how that relates to a cable so I never order them. What size clip would work for a round 2-core 1.5mm H07? No idea. Would be nice if Linian matched cables to clips, otherwise it's trial and error with them, and they ain't cheap!

The van doesn't look right without the other guy, wotsisname in the passenger seat. I am on my second bench like that one. The first broke when I left a 50Kg granite surface plate on it overnight. The second I got at the bargin bin at Toolstation because it had a plastic foot missing, only paid £35 for it. Made a new foot on the lathe.
Pity about Nige, if for no other reason than its a long fucking day with only your own thoughts! A boring video as you term it is better than no video, appreciate the effort put in and a breath of fresh air that there is nothing being sold every 30 seconds (as much as I understand the necessity of earning coin). Hi David, are you aware you can buy what are basically rawl plugs for nails? Also check out the Steinel Nightmatic 3000, it does basically what you have just assembled.
I haven't seen the Steinel, although I myself have a hybrid sensor that detects dusk and shuts off a pre-determined time later. The problem with that though is if you set it for, say, two hours, then it'll be off again by 18:00 in the peak of winter and not until 23:30 at the peak of summer. Nige introduced me to the nail plugs, but I got set in my ways with dowels.

Your 12-volt MR16 "can" fixtures look similar to the "12-volt 20-watt halogen pond lights", I used to be able to get at the local big box hardware store, unfortunately, a deleted line that was superseded by a cheap plastic non-user serviceable built-in LED trash.
nothing wrong with a bit of shakey camera work and poor audio makes the video better in my opinion. as a fellow 12v asshole there are somethings in life that are better running on 12v fact. but im not sure why people shy away from it.

Why my system is essentially build as cheap and simple as 24V garden lights can be, they will break no matter what so why make it any harder to repair. Already have one light with condensation on the inside and it started flickering recently... ffs these things man! Also cut a cable clean trough with the hedge trimmer couple months ago cant be bothered to fix that. I probably should replace the failed ones (there will be more inevitably) with one of those standard 230v spike lights and just put a low volt bulb in it BUT I cant bloody find anything thats 24V.
Hi those Wylex Siemens Mcb breakers could very well be the recalled 2009 b6s b10s and b16s fire starter ones the company I work for got caught by that recall.

That's a nice trick with the dowels. I usually use the plastic yellow 5mm plugs as they will hold a clip, but I bet not as well as a dowel. You can buy dedicated "pin plugs" as well for that purpose, but I don't think they're any better than the 5mm plugs and cost more.

I find it crazy that over the pond you're using 240v AC lighting outdoors. In the US it's common for pretty much all outdoor lighting like that to be done with low-voltage AC 12 V and you just string the cable through as it usually twin lead and the lights have insulation piercing connectors. I've seen a handful of instances where 120 V lighting was used but usually that's more professionally installed conduit etc. underground cable out to sign lights mounted in a professional manner.
It is crazy, and quite unnecessary, yet most spike lights are made in the GU10 form factor. It's hard to find the GU5.3 fittings, so it's either mains voltage or some proprietary non-replaceable thing for the most part.

Pond lights, I use them here in NZ, 10% the cost of bespoke LED garden lights and you can change the MR16 lamp in them when they fail.

Not sure about the timer, i use Ener-J wifi modules, (where it allows) so the owner can play with the times on the app! Btw, you can get a cover now for solar panels that stops pigeons getting under the panels.

I think they delay in turning on/off with those light sensors is to stop hysteresis, like in old thermostats. I may be wrong!! Sounds good though 😂 enjoy your smoke and a pancake 🎉
I think one criticism when it comes to selv lighting is what happens when the transformer or power supply fails, I have come across a few large outside lighting installs where they have used a very large transformer or a proprietary thing which you struggle to get hold of when they fail. Whereas 230v just needs a cable to the points, so as long as thereis a supply and everything is sound then it makes it easier to replace, retrofit and add to. But overall I agree, i wouldn’t personally want mains voltage round flowerbeds etc
In this case, it's a 12V constant voltage thang which is always easy to get hold of. The headache comes when you buy an off-the-shelf proprietary lighting kit that uses a funny constant current transformer.
Ah but it's the run of the mill boring jobs that are fun to chill out to. And love the work bench. I've been using a £10 fold out table from B&M for years now. No way am I bending over all day, I'm not that way inclined!
Normally Nige would have got on all fours and provided me with a working surface, but it's nice that a £75 lump of plastic can fulfil the same task.

I tend to get drivers from Amazon - usually Sebson models although this one wasn't (not sure what it was actually). It's just a vanilla 30W 12V constant voltage model.

David, is there a chance of trying an underground cable detector to locate a break in a cable in a wall as opposed to using an mft and maths to see if it’s:
A- quicker
B- reliable

Ah, well that controls the rotating mirror beacons on the roof and it also controlled the illuminated signs on the side. There was supposed to be a video about that, but it was something of a disaster in the end and the project got canned.
Sound that sat nav was trying to get you out of a supermarket car park😂😂😂 I invested in one of the work bench a few years ago and it's still going strong unfortunately I'm not but that's life eh. You will settle into semi retirement and you will start to wonder why you didnt do it years ago.
I don't know that workbench is pretty nice and sets up easily. I would say it's a design improvement from previous generations and worth the upgrade.
My dad's old Workmate could have been employed, but it's heavy, awkward to carry and a faff to set up.

When I've done that setup with outside lights the customer more often than not, then decide they want the ability to override at will. From anywhere.I've done all kinds trickery involving electric gate remote key fobs operating contactors, GSM controllers, you name it. Fortunately much easier these days with off-the-shelf solutions and Quinetic switches. My problem was, when a customer asks "can I", I never learnt to say "no, you fuckin' can't".

There's a link in the description. I can't speak for it's longevity or reliability, and it has no torque whatsoever, but for basic zipping and unzipping of accessories, it's a decent weight and size. I can keep this in my hip tool pouch unlike my Bosch which is too heavy and ends up staying in the toolbox.

Genuine question don't you get massive voltage drop using 12v for bigger garden runs? Remember as an apprentice having issues with mr16 halogens. If possible could the timer have been installed inside then an enclosure with driver and photocell in the lid? There's pirs out there with adjustable setback timers ie turns on at dark o'clock and switches off 5 minutes later. Tip for flex on a rough wall i use linian clips. Keep the videos coming. Even if it's been done before every job is different so the content will be different.
The volt drop can be a problem but not at this sort of length, especially if the feed cable has a larger CSA. Here I went for a 1.5mm 2-core whereas smaller runs may only require a 0.75mm cable. For LED lamps, a volt drop that's too high may see some flickering or other such ill operation, but then some models of lamp may be less susceptible to such, after all, any 12V lamp will be dropping the voltage lower internally and their regulator may have a wide window of input voltage (say, 8 - 16V or something). I've used the adjustable sensors before; I have one myself, but the issue there is they tend to shut off a certain time after turning on. My garden lights go off after two hours which means they're on until 18:00 in the depths of winter and 23:30 in the height of summer. That doesn't really work here where the client wants them on at dusk and off by midnight whatever the time of year. I did consider Linian clips for this one, but I find Linian hopeless to size for a job. Their clips are always stated in mm and I never know how that relates to a cable so I never order them. What size clip would work for a round 2-core 1.5mm H07? No idea. Would be nice if Linian matched cables to clips, otherwise it's trial and error with them, and they ain't cheap!
I'm sure there was enough space in that enclosure to squeeze in some Hager arc fault protection.....

I am on my second bench like that one. The first broke when I left a 50Kg granite surface plate on it overnight. The second I got at the bargin bin at Toolstation because it had a plastic foot missing, only paid £35 for it. Made a new foot on the lathe.

They're called Pinplugs
I haven't seen the Steinel, although I myself have a hybrid sensor that detects dusk and shuts off a pre-determined time later. The problem with that though is if you set it for, say, two hours, then it'll be off again by 18:00 in the peak of winter and not until 23:30 at the peak of summer. Nige introduced me to the nail plugs, but I got set in my ways with dowels.

Your 12-volt MR16 "can" fixtures look similar to the "12-volt 20-watt halogen pond lights", I used to be able to get at the local big box hardware store, unfortunately, a deleted line that was superseded by a cheap plastic non-user serviceable built-in LED trash.
nothing wrong with a bit of shakey camera work and poor audio makes the video better in my opinion. as a fellow 12v asshole there are somethings in life that are better running on 12v fact. but im not sure why people shy away from it.

Why my system is essentially build as cheap and simple as 24V garden lights can be, they will break no matter what so why make it any harder to repair.
Already have one light with condensation on the inside and it started flickering recently... ffs these things man!
Also cut a cable clean trough with the hedge trimmer couple months ago cant be bothered to fix that.
I probably should replace the failed ones (there will be more inevitably) with one of those standard 230v spike lights and just put a low volt bulb in it BUT I cant bloody find anything thats 24V.
