  • 2016 Dodge Charger RT Blacktop - Review & Test Drive. If you’re of the philosophy that bigger is always better, the Dodge Charger family is probably right up your alley. Stepping down two tiers from the top trim Hellcat, the R/T Blacktop shown here in purple and black still boasts a meaty 5.7L V8 producing 370 HP and 395 lb-ft of torque. Spring a little extra for the Scat Pack, and you’ll have the most horsepower in the US market for under $40,000, 485 at the crank and 475 lb-ft. It’ll come as no surprise that a car with a longer wheelbase than a Cadillac Escalade and a hefty V8 tips the scales on the heavy side, 4280 lbs.

    As an owner of a 2014 R/T Blacktop I have to say you nailed this one. Thanks for appreciating it for what it is and not comparing it to other Japanese and German cars in its "class". I threw a set of Hotchkis anti-roll bars in mine and it made the handling absolutely perfect for a car this size.

      For total clarity, it's because I found the process extraordinarily boring. The process of filming and editing 20 minute reviews where (at least to me) it felt like I was just pointing at things and naming them didn't really feel all the beneficial. Instead I've chosen to dive deeper into the driving dynamics, as it's more interesting for me to film and discuss. That said, every video is an experiment, I learn from the audience (hopefully) as much as the audience learns from the video. I don't ever plan on having a set style for every video or review. Each is its own unique project and I try different approaches in an effort to determine what resonates best.

    Your reviews are always a pleasure! However I was a bit surprised that we didn't see the freeway impressions or fuel economy numbers on this review. Granted I don't know if these parameters would carry much weight on a purchase decision for this car, because as you said this would be an emotional purchase if you were in the mid-size sedan market.

    • @puneet7891
      @puneet7891 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      On the Freeway, it is a very comfortable cruiser. Honestly it's almost Mercedes-like in the way it drives and handles. Fuel economy is rated at 15 in the city and 25 on the highway but those numbers are underrated. If you drive normally without accelerating fast all the time then you can get close to 17 in the city or in SOME cases 18. On the highway, its literally like 27-28 at about 70 mph. Even in the 6.4 Liter Hemi, you can achieve that sometimes. If you go 75-80 mph, you'll get 25 mph, but at 65, you can get up to 30 depending on conditions. All in all, you wouldn't regret this purchase if made. The V6 on the other hand is a different story. Gets the best mileage out of all and the power is not too bad but leaves a lot to be desired in a almost 4000 pound car.
      Any other questions? I am happy to answer.

      is a 6.4 scat worth it over a regular 5.7? how are expenses on tune ups ect compare to each other? would i spend a lot more money on a 6.4 then a 5.7 like gas upgrades and such?

    • @puneet7891
      @puneet7891 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      marcus Oh it's worth it. Tune up expenses would be about the same. Maybe a lil bit more but not much, really. You'll have a lot more fun in the Scat and the best part is....you get the same amount of fuel economy on both engines

    Shifting from 2-3 and 3-4 and so on are VERY quick, I saw you were going from 1-2 alot when you were talking about it not shifting quick, thats because in the ZF 8 speeds the torque converter is locked after second gear so thats why it shifts so quick AFTER second gear

    Regarding the steering on this car, you can change the mode from the infotainment system settings. If you want more steering feedback and don't mind additional effort, the sport mode feels fantastic. Comfort mode feels too soft and disconnected, but the normal setting is great for everyday driving.

  • @michaelallen2501
    @michaelallen2501 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but any torque converter equipped automatic will shift slow in manual mode when you're not getting on it. That's what the big "D" is for. You shouldn't be trying to shift yourself unless you're at 7/10's or above anyways. It's not a fault in the trans per say, but a fault in the thought process of the driver. The absolute fastest shifting torque converter equipped auto will never bang off gears like a DCT or DSG at low speeds. It isn't designed to.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Allen The 8 speed ZF used in the F-type, Vanquish, and Hellcat can hammer out fast, smooth shifts no matter what the driving speed. And the new 10 speed Camaro supposedly has quicker upshifts than Porsche's DCT. No reason not to mention it, when better is possible.

    • @michaelallen2501
      @michaelallen2501 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm anxiously awaiting some reviews from you on the GM/Ford 10 speed. That looks like an excellent piece of automotive engineering. There's only a couple RWD 8 speed automatics out there. Is this just a dumbed down version of the other ZF's that FCA use?

    The problem with the Blacktop package is it's only visual. It still has the typical sport suspension with the auto leveling shocks. If you get a 2016 Charger R/T with the Super track pack it has a stiffer, lower suspension and more tuning options for stiffer steering, ect. As for the Scat Pack version, it has all that plus better brakes and more power. This review would have been a good bit different if you tested one with the Super Track Pack instead of the Blacktop package. Of course those options are not available together though.

    Those big engines can last very long if you maintain them good. right? Also if this would come in a 6 gear manuel, it'd be a great car

      I know a police officer who rides in one every day and despite it being a "police pack" reinforced edition, it spends most of its days in the shop being repaired... They even had to resort to using the old faithful Crown Vic P71 a couple of times, because the Charger was out of commission.

      My 2014 rt, with the 2.65 gears I got a 4.92 seconds to 60 mph and it was accurate , I did it with my diablo trinity tuner. I have several mods but nothing big. Mine has the 18 inch wheels instead of 20's which does make it accelerate faster. I have 1 size lower profile tires also which helps. Only 1 shift from 1st to 2nd.
