I was in the army and the only reason they said to be clean shaven for a gas mask was to prevent the masks from ripping or tugging on facial hair. But if you need to and you have facial hair tighten it slightly more than you normally would and the seal will still form with the facial hair

Apparently the active ingredient is capsaicin, which is what makes chillis hot. When you eat food containing chillis you're not supposed to drink water to get rid of the heat as that just moves the capsaicin around your mouth, instead you're meant to drink milk as it will bond to the fat molecules. With this in mind, using vegetable oil or similar might be more effective than water at removing the bear spray.

One morning I got some on my finger after touching the business end accidentally. I yawned and wiped my right eye, and made the same noises he did in front of 95 convicted felons. Obviously, they understood my pain. Never lived it down though. Entire facility knew an hour later and it was very obvious if you looked at me. We had masks like these for use when we got out the scuba tank sized cans of pepper spray.

You should have followed proper hazmat decon procedures, spray suit down with water then take everything off except the mask and Thales the gas mask off last.

Water and pepper spray repel each other so it does a bad job of washing it away, but vegetable oil will dilute and carry away the chemical.

Future reference for this, no tear baby shampoo is the best thing for OC spray because the oil in the shampoo dissolves the oil in the OC. Helped me out a bunch when I had to do an OC course. Also milk really helps.

test your seal cover the filter intake and deeply inhale. if safely sealed, you should not be able to breathe and feel zero air come inside the mask make sure you use the right filter! most masks use the standardized NATO 40mm but some use bigger or smaller the GP-5 civilisn gas mask uses 40mm threads, but when you put a modern filter on, it breaks the seal just be careful that mask was of course properly sealed. be careful, dont lick it!
Do *not* wait until the bear is closer to spray. While it shouldn't really mist like that, Bear Spray is a deterrent. If the bear is already charging at you, it's not going to do much other than potentially incapacitating you. There's a reason you're supposed to use it from a distance. For context: Bear Spray is essentially just very, very, very potent pepper spray. Bears are a lot more sensitive than humans when it comes to smell so even with the misting, it's very likely going to be affected.

We deal with bears all the time here in Northern Ontario and it's a well known fact the only way to get rid if a bear is let run at you full speed and right before it opens its mouth to bite you stick your arm down its throat grab its tail, pull its tail out his mouth flipping it inside out and he will run the other way.. cheers
