    A mobile OS can never replace a desktop OS. It's not just the programs, it's the entire interface and user freedom to do whatever you need.

      Smartphones are moving closer and closer to desktop and have been trying to achieve what full OS has had for decades so gtfoh with your 5 years timeline lol what a retarded argument to support a retarded product

      Pay Attention HD What he means is that mobile OS has advanced a lot and yet never was able to replace a desktop, despite the fact that was its main goal.

    • @hildekrone5108
      @hildekrone5108 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would HOPE it becomes obsolete lol, you saying that it will get to that point despite it being years in doesn't help prove your point that much. I understand that technology will not await anyone, but as it stands right now, a mobile OS cannot EQUATE to a desktop OS.

    Just picked up my Surface Pro - very pleased with it! Windows 10 is actually pretty good when you use it as a tablet too, but the app selection is lacking. Could you do a video on the current state of Windows 10 for tablets, using the Surface Pro, and look at various tips for multitasking, app switching, home screen (start menu) organising? And maybe look at some good apps while you are at it :)
    Personally I use the Surface about 70% in tablet mode, and 30% as a laptop either when typing, or if there is an app/program that just doesn't play nicely with touch controls.

    the surface pro also has instant one. also how fair is it to compare the pen sensitivity and refresh rate using photoshop on the surface pro while using a lightweight app for the ipad. How about using sketchable on the surface pro?

  • @bogarthunter2104

    As a game developer and artist. no matter how i look for an app for the ipad pro that comes close to the windows apps i just cant find it. examples unity3d, Unreal Engine, Maya 3D, Octane renderer. That is the drawback of the ipad pro. I will fully recommend the ipad pro if you are ok with photo editing using affinity and drawing in it, but for other things like making designs in the most efficient way as posible like the ability to connect to a monitor and use a mouse, the surface is the deal. And if your really serious in working in a company as a graphics artist the Wacom studio is the thing to get.

    The latency difference between the pens for ipad & surfave is supposed to be 1ms. But the slomo here seems more severe. What is the program used on the surface? I suspect it was contributing to the lag, especially if it was something from adobe...

      John Cruddas Yeah, she used a complex application on the Surface and a small application on the iPad. That definitely contributed to the latency and is misleading. She should have used lite apps from the app store on both.

    As a professional artist, the new Surface Pro just works better for me. I can use a Wacom Expresskey Remote with it that gives me physical buttons needed for faster art creation. I tried the iPad Pro with Procreate, but painting with it is just too darn slow and limiting. After a week, I returned it for the new Surface Pro. All the stuff I need to produce concept art and illustration is made possible again. And more importantly, I am no longer forced to work at a snail's pace. I do miss the iPad's larger screen and aspect ratio. But at least now I have access to Zbrush and Max.

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slow in terms of workflow or performance?

    • @thienthannho5588
      @thienthannho5588 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In terms of work flow. Because I can use something like the Expresskey Remote with the Surface Pro, shortcut keys can be set to speed up the whole process. Digital painting on the iPad pro feels like running in water. I let a bunch of guys in the studio test it out. Pretty much everyone felt that the iPad was interesting for simple doodling, but that there were too many compromises. I guess that's why we all work on Cintiqs. Plus when you start using bigger brushes, it wasn't that fast either. I was also disappointed by the cheap feel of the Apple Pencil. Not something that you want to hold if you were to draw for a long period of time. The charging method is also really clunky.

    I really wonder why there was no special focus on the screens, I don't know if the SP was turned half way down but it looked like the iPad literally blew it out of the water in terms of clarity and brightness.

    • @mobiletechreview

    Ipad is a laptop wanna be
    Surface pro is a tablet wanna be
    Lets admit that ipad can't really replace a laptop in case you don't own a desktop/laptop. There is some software you need to run on a computer and apple is trying to do it too, but just not yet close for a IOS, even for IOS 11 IMO
    However, if you already have a desktop/laptop in first place and want something portable to do some light work, IMO think ipad pro is actually a pretty solid option. While there is some limit to fully run a desktop application, it still can do most of the productivity work which a laptop can do.
    While the surface pro, microsoft marketed it in between a laptop and a tablet. However, the position for it is kinda awkward tho.
    The window 10 tablet mode is not very user friendly. It has the convenience to be used as a tablet, but the software interface it not as good as a ios/android. For the price, you can definitely get a more powerful laptop, e.g., something portable and lightweight like LG gram 13. However Surface pro is laptop that runs window 10, it can replace your main computer. If you want a laptop which can be used a tablet for entertainment if you want, surface pro is for you.
    Personally i have a quite powerful 2 years old gaming laptop that still functioning pretty well, i just don't need a new laptop for replacement yet. I went for ipad pro for a portable device that can be brought everywhere to do my work and i'm happy with it.
    If you already have a computer and want a portable device for work, go ipad pro
    If you're planning to get your first computer/ upgrade your computer, and want something 2 in 1, go for surface pro
    Just remember that ipad pro cant really replace your computer, it can do most of the work but not replacing it
    For the surface pro tho, if you really don't need the 2 in 1 function, a normal laptop at the price definitely has a better spec than it. But if you think the 2 in 1 feature really cool, well, why don't follow your heart?

    Pen Latency also depends on the app you use. It should be better with Ink Workspace on Windows 10 till others update the performance of their programs
    You should do a battery life test between the two to find the winner. Engadget did it and found that the new Ipad lasts 9:40h and the new surface 13:45h as claimed. I think it was for video looping with nothing opened in the background

    I've been waiting on this video. I'm struggling to decide between the base Surface Pro and the base iPad Pro. With the Surface, you get that full operating system, but with the specs, you're still kinda limited. With the iPad Pro, you get phenomenal specs for a tablet, but you're limited by the mobile operating system (no desktop apps).
    Decisions, decisions.

      I'm a PC guy at work, and now an iPad Pro 10.5" at home. I can say in my short time with the new iPad Pro, it's a really enjoyable experience. I went for the big 512GB drive size so that it would be like my laptop replacement because I plan on doing photo/video editing on it. Definitely check out the Logitech Slim Combo over the Apple Smart Keyboard for a keyboard case, it becomes just like a surface pro from the keyboard and stand perpective. And there's actually plenty of keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys (just hold down the Command button to see them). But, I'd suggest to think about what desktop apps you really need and use, and what iOS apps are there that are the same, or could potentially replace them. That would be the main deciding factor for me.

      D33M0N3Y only get the surface if you know you need certain desktop apps. If there are app replacements though, shoot for the iPad. The display is amazing, the speakers are amazing, the battery life is amazing, the performance is amazing - the experience in general is amazing.

    The iPad "instant start up" thing was mentioned a couple of times. If your Surface Pro doesn't start up instantly then that's because you have the Power settings set to Sleep after thirty minutes or whatever. It's your choice. The Surface Pro can easily be instant start up if you want it. Personally I have mine set to sleep and start up takes maybe five seconds.
    My problem with the iPad Pro is they're selling you a $1000+ machine and a $160 keyboard and telling you it can replace your laptop but it can't even support a trackpad or mouse! When the MacBook Pro with touchbar was launched Apple Craig Federghi explained they didn't go with a touchscreen because keeping your hands on the keyboard or mouse was far more efficient. But if you buy an iPad Pro Apple effectively say "Forget all that, you've got a touchscreen and you can't use a trackpad or mouse. Deal with it".

    I always love your reviews but in terms of pen latency comparisons, Photoshop is really a very bad choice on Windows. It is more a powerful photo retouching tool than drawing creation tool despite its versatility. The lag in Photoshop is just HUGE compared with almost any other app that supports pen mode on Windows, Onenote, Powerpoint, Sketchable, FreshPaint... just name it. Photoshop really needs to update their pen API to be considered as a pen friendly app.

    Your latency test is misleading. You used a complex and featured packed application on the Surface and a small application on the iPad. That definitely contributed to the latency. You should have used lite apps from the app store on both when demoing that aspect, pointing out it'll vary from app to app.

      Procreate is likely the most sophisticated and complex 2D drawing program on the iPad. It's what artists choose to use on iOS as a counterpart to Photoshop on Windows/Mac. There is no true cross-platform test that uses the same ink engine, etc.

    • @ahmada.562
      @ahmada.562 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      MobileTechReview You know very well that Photoshop doesn't use the smooth Windows Ink API. You could have easily gone with a Win32 art app that makes use of it, or something like Sketchables on the Windows Store. Pro artists make use of several other Windows apps besides Photoshop.
      Jomar Uy Outperforms in what way? Based merely on a benchmark that favours ARM chipsets? The previous gen ipad pro also outperformed the i3 Surface Pro 3 in geekbench, yet it was still trailing behind it in several other benchmarks. Geekbench only tells a fraction of the performance story.

  • @audreymcneal

    I have the 2017 surface, and when I bought it I had no idea a new iPad had recently come out (they debuted at the same time, though neither were on my radar). I only even knew about the new one because my old one had it’s screen broken and surface screens aren’t replaceable. The one thing no one really talks about is that the iPad can’t run adobe flash, which, in my opinion, is all that keeps it from being a true laptop substitute. I need adobe flash for school a fair amount of the time, so I might have still chosen the surface had I known about the new iPad. I really love how the iPad feels with the new pencil, however, and it blows the surface pen out of the water. The lag on the surface usually isn’t as bad as it is on the application she displayed, but it’s not good, either. From an art and detail standpoint, I can’t find anything that rivals the iPad on my new surface. For that reason, I really want the iPad. It’s also so much more portable, and I think would be a much better viewing experience. Maybe some people think it’s redundant to have both, but I am honestly so screwed if I ever forget my surface at home since I do everything on it, that having a backup, or even making the surface the backup, seems perfectly justifiable to me.

    If you are a digital designer or artist and you use Windows I imagine you would preferably consider the Surface over the iPad Pro, even as this Apple branded tablet could be utilized as a companion device as well (tied to your Windows desktop or laptop via Adobe's Creative Cloud, for example) but if you prefer the MacOS you could or would utilize the iPad Pro as a companion device to your Mac desktop or laptop utilizing these same applications on the mobile device and desktop (People seem to forget, or rather I'm getting long in the tooth.... that Photoshop and Illustrator were originally created for the Mac as it was the first commercially available Personal Computer with a WIMP, Windows, Icon, Mouse, Pointer, Bitmap Interface). Apple and Microsoft have two different approaches to touch computing as Apple has a both a successful legacy WIMP OS (MacOS) running on Intel processors and a touch based mobile OS (iOS) running on ARM processors, which Redmond doesn't have. As a first generation product, the Apple Pencil, and iPad Pro, I believe, arguably compelled Microsoft and Wacom to raise their game in regards to digital styluses and the accompanying tablet hardware. This competition is of immeasurable value to all present and future users of these products, not just digital designers and artists.

    I reckon this is a pertinent comparison for some specific uses, and a good one at that. Now, is it just me or is the brightness on the iPad blown up to max while the Surface's is at a darker setting?

      They were set to the same brightness level, with auto-brightness enabled (and misbehaving part of the time for the Surface Pro).

Would I intentionally use my iPad outside to take pictures no . I have my iPhone for that .

    I found the surface pen--surprisingly--a better experience than the apple pencil. The slight give in the tip takes the curse off writing on glass. Both are good. I find both these devices have to be seen in person to appreciate how amazing they are.

  • @marceln2

    I moved to Switzerland and Surface pro 4 and the 2017 model are extremely popular here. However, most of the students use them as a laptop in a desktop mode - with keyboard and touchpad/mouse. Then why not to buy any other laptop? Probably because the surface pro is very portable and has a great high-resolution screen. But they do not use it as a tablet (i think that windows can not provide a good tablet experience yet). Also, it is quite heavy for a tablet usage. So then it does not make much sense to compare with iPad. On the other hand, most people who own tablets do not use them with keyboards/mouses.
    As a recent graduate, I would recommend having a laptop device. I consider surface pro a very portable laptop with a nice touchscreen, so it is a viable option. But there are many other (cheaper/ non-touchscreen/ better keyboard) options.

    Lisa great review as usual, I really like your videos, so well put together and your knowledge of client systems is obvious, saves me so much time knowing where to look for the next ‘thing’. As for the iPad Pro vs. Surface Pro, I must say I love my iPad Air 2 running iOS 11 Beta 2, and I considered the iPad Pro 10.5, because it fits into my ecosystem with my Mac and iPhone and all of that gear. My house has been all-Apple since 2008. The only issue is Excel and OneNote. The iOS versions are so limited that I can’t live with them, but I really wasn’t convinced that a Surface Pro would be durable enough for me to bang around the office and the train all day. I ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 370 instead based on your reviews of the 260, 460 and X1.

    Guys, I own both these devices, and here is the summary:
    Ipad is super smooth and snappy the moment you use it you can feel it. Rotation is much faster, it registers the slightest touch and is very responsive, pen has no activation force which is great. Battery life is great, lightweight, thin, efficient.
    And then going back to Surface Pro the experience is not even close to Ipad's level. Screen is not as sensitive sometimes slightest touch doesn't register and it's annoying. (Try putting on a glass screen protector and it will be much much worse). Lags sometimes, bulky.
    But I still pick the Surface as my main because I need Photoshop and stuff.

  • @ninedux

    Realistically using photoshop / clip studio on surface you will need a keyboard... trying to prop up a surface along with a keyboard whenever you want to sketch something will get annoying very quickly. Procreate 4 has come a long way for iPad where most artists have no problem doing full paintings on it, I think along with 120hz screen on the iPad it makes for more satisfying experience if you're looking for an art tool and not a computer.

    Although I like that the Surface Pro can run desktop programs, I'm not convinced that it's a good option for people who want to use it for digital art. The screen is smaller than that of the iPad Pro 12.9", it's slippery to draw on, doesn't have tilt on the pen, the pen strokes register more slowly than on the iPad, and it runs on Windows which is prone to viruses. For something so expensive, I don't feel that the Surface Pro is worth it based on what it currently offers.

    • @davidspagnolo4870
      @davidspagnolo4870 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's not true at all. The only reason Desktop applications have been bigger in the past is because they've been more complex. I would bet as applications for these mobile OS's get more complex, you'll start to see the binaries get bigger and bigger.

    While I can completely agree that some people need the Surface to run desktop apps in some situations the blame really shouldn't be put on Apple but more on software developers. For a few years now iPads (especially all of the iPad Pros) have been powerful enough to run Photoshop and the new A10X chip would be WAY faster than the base model Core m3 of the Surface. Adobe could make a version of Photoshop for the iPad but don't just like a lot of other developers do. Affinity Photo is showing that the iPad Pro is more than capable if the software actually exists to take advantage of the hardware.

    I tried using a Samsung tablet from the S line as my daily device. But, as with iPad Pro, it is a mobile OS. And if you want to use that as a daily driver, you are going to miss out on some very important programs. In addition, I believe creating Office docs on Android or iOS it is just pants. This is the most useful SP'17 VS iPad Pro review I've seen. Thank you for showing the real-time pencil action on both. The SP'17 is really attractive from a sheer productivity standpoint, but what really attracts me to the iPad Pro is the comparatively seamless integration with other Apple devices, and the higher quality of Apple's touch paradigm compared to Windows.
    But this is a tough choice. If I got the iPad Pro I'd get the 10.5; the 12.9 model is almost comically oversized. Interesting that one consistent theme I hear from reviewers is the comparatively low quality experience using Apple's keyboard cover versus MS's type cover. Apple seems to really have ceded the I/O game they usually win in the laptop and desktop space; is this a portent that they will soon release a computing machine that they claim won't need a keyboard?

    After reading through comments:
    "The [insert favored device] is better."
    Okay. Better at what? Are these posts meaningful. I tend to think that videos like this are observational comparisons between devices, and that they help potential buyers make informed decisions. Meanwhile, some people who comment like above argue over which is "better." Why don't we talk about our favorite OS/device that are being compared? What is good about that OS, what is bad about it?
    For Windows 10, here's what I like. I feel safe being able run Windows desktop applications if I need to. It's possible to play many PC games (of course not heavy ones for less powerful devices like Surface Pro). It's a little easier to do things with Cortana (sure it's the same for Siri). There are choices of apps for artists of all sorts (there are also choices on iPad I'm aware).
    What I don't like. UWP (Windows Store) apps still feels a bit sketchy compared to Win32/Centennial applications. I'm always paranoid of what powerful Win32 applications can do to bog down Windows. I'm not satisfied with some choices Microsoft has made with Windows 10 (I question the value of Paint 3D, but then it bums me out that Microsoft hardly publicizes it). Windows Store has come a long way; that being said, the app selection still feels limiting.
