Safety tips may seem like common knowledge to us weapon enthusiasts, but I think its really important that you keep restating them for newcomers. I've never attached a spear handle and I could easily see myself leveraging it the wrong way without thinking. Other than that, great video and awesome spear attachment! ✊
Quick tip - get an "eyehole" screw that you can thread through the handle hole, you can start turning it in with your hand and then tighten by putting a stick through the eyehole for leverage. That way you can haft onto a spear anytime without needing to carry a screwdriver.
It only takes a 4 inch blade to be lethal against any animal in North America. The Bushman is much longer than that and wider than most knives. Its also very pointy and flexible, which you want in a throwing spear.
@@ethancntower8850 a black bear would be toast, but you need to add a cross bar near the end of the knife to stop the animal from "running up" the spear . Check out boar spears to understand the cross bar

I've had one of these since 2017. FedEx lost it. Cold steel sent me another one overnighted it. Month later FedEx deliveryed the first one I ordered. I contacted Cold Steel and the told me to keep it free... Cold Steel is a great company imho. It's funny you posted this today. I ordered the Bowie version earlier today for $13. So I ordered two of them. It's funny, out of all of my "survival knives" the cold steel Bushman is still in the Top 5 I've ever owned. And I dozens of survival knives. Many between $100-$400 range. And the bushman beats most of them hands down somehow.

Instead of the screw… I drilled a hole on the opposite side of the handle. Use a steel pin & shock cord through both holes to secure the knife to the handle. This way it’s easy to go from a knife to a spear & much more versatile.
I painted my handle with epoxy, then rolled it in fine sand. Vastly improves grip,and still fits in sheath. This replaced a short machete in my survival pack since it does double duty. A spear gives anyone somuch confidence...and rightfully so.
Now I have a way of justifying the purchase to my wife. "I need it to slice up water bottles for the recycling bin." Great vid as always and as noted, thanks for including the safety advice!
I have one great 👍 tool to have good for hog hunting especially and you can put in Handel survival items . l put a wrap around Handel like a tennis racket none sleep grip have fun with it😊
I bought one in 19 89/90 for $13 at a place called c.t.d in fort Worth Texas I still have that knife today and out of all the other knives that I have it is Stihl one of the first blades I go to when going fishing or out for a walk in the woods to practice Bushcraft with a short handle of 18" inches it works like a machete/ parang/ / hatchet .64" handle it makes one of the best snake Defense you'll ever have in your kit!!! Turtles snakes squirrel raccoons possums dear are allergic to it they just seem to fall apart in it,s presence???
For such a small price, the Bushman out cuts most top end blades, especially batoning. Impressive for such an unassuming knife. Really is a top bit of kit.
They make a wonderful throwing knife, that doubles as a Combat/Survival knife the True Flight. Just an idea for future videos! You did great on this! Well done!
Friend of mine has one. True Flight is a great knife. But I've never used out of the box. My friend already put a wicked scary edge on his by the time he showed it to me.
@@brianmccann666 We always have to reprofile and sharpen, at least 2-3 times an a axe or a knife, before we put it to real use. Not just to make it cut or chop properly but also to get rid of the "burnt" steel, that factory belts create. That way, you'll also avoid chiping on the edge. These are just the main advantages, but you gain even more than those. Glad you mentioned it.
But there is something, speaking of proper safety, you desperately need to know. At 5.20 your ending form is really bad. You need "stops" to control that blade. You should never take your swing out of your peripheral view. In the Old wars, 90% of casualties, were from friendly fire. This can happen from blades, especially longer swords and spears, as well as arrows and bullets (talking about friendly fire). When you finish a swing, your weapon should never be more than 20% PAST the intended target. Those are called "stops". And they should be crisp stops. It creates core strength, gives you faster recovery for the second immediate strike, creates (keeps) balance and keeps your weapon from hitting anything else outside your view. It keeps friends beside you from being critically damaged and damage to the weapon. You cannot continue a fight if you break the shaft or the weapon. This was a critical point in my training from a true master (Ghurka). We were never permitted to carelessly swing weapons and never permitted to over swing in practice. This keeps us from hitting the ground, losing the edge, etc. Stops are crucial for actual warfare in melee. This weapon would be good as a short spear also. Half of quarter length. It cannot be beat for $25 in a SHTF scenario. This could arm a whole team.
I've got the CS Bowie bushman and I bought a stick like you at Lowe's. I didn't put a screw in mine so that I could take it off and still use it for camping

I read a comment somewhere that the handle portion (where the stick would slide in) is narrow enough to where the stick may break because of a lack of enough wood material. Do you think that's true or is there enough room in the metal for the shaft to not break with lateral torquing forces?
@@Visiblyblue I think it can take a lot but I do believe it will wear down after a while and a new handle will be needed. In all of my testing of blades, throwing always seems to be the the thing that wears down everything. I think it will last a good while everyone is just thrusting or slicing but throwing enough times will either loosen or break it

I have the shorter clip point version, that I put on a Hickory Hoe handle. I use an screw eye, so easy to remove the spear head if I need too. As for your spear head with out a screw hole. Use industrial strength Hot Glue, to hole it on your shaft. Hot Glue, believe it or not, has been around for ages, in one form or another.

I collect swords. I have some very expensive, high-quality pieces. In a SHTF situation, or for basic outdoor survival, there are two pieces of equipment that I think rule all the others: The Cold Steel Bushman Spear and the Cold Steel Gladius Machete. Why? First, they are both cheap in price and practically indestructible. Second, as basic as they are, they also offer maximum versatility in a survival situation, being excellent as both tools and weapons. With both those pieces, a man could do just about anything. P.S.: If you want to make the knife even more versatile, wrap the handle in paracord.
Have you checked out the Shanghai shadow and warrior? Both are awesome for the dollar. I've turned the smaller into a spear. Hoping to use it on an animal some day
Yeah most definitely when walking through the woods. The height thing mostly applies to survival spears cut from wood. I just got into the habit of making them a little longer ha ha but you’re right keeping that thing sheathed is very important
Not sure where i got this tidbit of info....take it for what its wort. The reason for the screw hole is so if you do use it as a spearhead, but not permanently so, it allows you to remove it from your shaf. It will wedge itself on so tight you will not be able to remove it without destroying the shaft. True/false i don't know. Haven't tried it without the screw. Yep, I'm a coward....after all the time and money spent on the shaft don't want to take the chance.

Im thinking about an combination with escrima stick which is about one inch thick but theres no info at all bout' bushman handle (It should be around 1,5-1,7' judging by look but it may be just dellusion). I was also same-level reckless until i almost died by bloodloss when my elbow artery was accidentialy cutted. To be clear, am not talking about being boring but safe man. Just consider some protective gear, especially for head or at least eyes (basin on my experience its also good to have stasis with you) and keep going with smashin those wooden bastards. Good luck!
I live on a 386 acres that boarders DNR land. We have a farm with goats, pigs, chickens, and turkeys. We use all of our property for free range and recreation. Mainly outdoor hiking and on property camping/bushcraft. We have bear, coyote, cougar, raccoon, possum, rattle snakes, deer and every kind of bird and lizard you can think of that comes and go through our property. Every once in a while they come onto contact with our animals and garden. When that happens we do everything to scare them off but every now and then we have to take more drastic measures. I carry a spear. Yes I said it. I carry a spear. I also have limited but adequate black smithing skills and form my own spear tips. I borrowed my design from the Assegai spear design. I stand 6' 2" tall and I tailor my spears to be 1 spear head length taller than me. I use the spear for so much. I use it mainly as a walking stick, but the 2nd most use is flicking snakes away. I also use the shaft to guide the goats. I have however had to use it a couple times to dispatch multiple feral pigs and coyotes, 1 black bear that decided he was going to help himself to our goats and didn't seem to care I was there, and a couple raccoons going after our chickens. It is extremely effective. The pigs I just stabbed them, the best, coyotes, and raccoons I threw it. They didn't last long. It's a very quick death. I will tell you, first hand, a spear is extremely useful and formidable. About 3 years ago, we had a couple DNR cops come onto our property tracking a poacher. They were very polite and when we crossed paths they asked permission to access my land. I told them they were already on my land but they could help themselves and I wished them luck with their tracking of the poachers and thanked them for being polite. The older DNR officer stated, "Well it's not everyday we see someone walking around with a spear. And I think being polite to the guy with the spear is probably a good idea." I just chuckled.

It is extremely effective. The pigs I just stabbed them, the best, coyotes, and raccoons I threw it. They didn't last long. It's a very quick death.
I will tell you, first hand, a spear is extremely useful and formidable.
About 3 years ago, we had a couple DNR cops come onto our property tracking a poacher. They were very polite and when we crossed paths they asked permission to access my land. I told them they were already on my land but they could help themselves and I wished them luck with their tracking of the poachers and thanked them for being polite. The older DNR officer stated, "Well it's not everyday we see someone walking around with a spear. And I think being polite to the guy with the spear is probably a good idea."
I just chuckled.

Ma la colpa è della Colf Steel che non dichiara, e non potrebbe farlo, che si tratta sostanzialmente di una micidiale arma bianca, da sola o innestata a lancia. La sola che vorrei avere se mi trovassi, Dio non voglia, da solo e sperduto tra gli anfratti di una favelas brasiliana.
