I for one enjoy your vids. Very educational, I never really thought about the pouches, I use heavy duty plastic bags from work, and they work, I just have to eventually change them out. I’ll have to look into that mans site.
Don't get me wrong I love gear, I love pouches. But I stuff smaller pieces into socks. I bring an extra pair of socks and put gear in each and stuff them into my pack. After all you are going to bring a extra pair of socks anyway so it saves weight, space and money. I put the gear in one until it about half full or less and give the sock a twist to lock it and pull the top back over itself to seal it.
Out of all the bushcraft and survival gear bag videos I've seen over the years, this is one of my favorites. It's all so slim and organized, but not too light either. That bag is still so small and light, that you can comfortably attach a blanket and frying pan to the exterior of the bag, and have room for snacks.
I bought my dad a knockoff water filter like yours, it works great for personal use for hiking. We use our filters at deer camp for 5 gallons at a time, it does not work for our application even though it works efficiently. You're 100% right on having things and gear that works for your application.
It’s kinda crazy that I’m even saying this but I’ve been kinda falling out of love with gear in general. Haha 🤣 I’ve found the things I really love and have just been looking at all the rest of my stuff and it looks like a big dollar sign. I’m about to sell everything. I do still love my canvas tho! I bet your wallet is thankful. I collected a ton of gear when I was still green and learning what I liked. But now I feel like you. I look at all the shit I amassed over the years, and if I’m honest with myself, there is only a small percentage of that gear that I regularly use. Most of it I can do without. I can’t tell you how many trips I took where I brought all this cool gear, and half if it never left my pack. My problem is I become attached to my gear and don’t want to get rid of it, but if I were to really only keep the essentials and get rid of the rest, I’d have a nice chunk of change. Of course, I have also found some great gear that I can’t immagine doing without, but gear collection is definitely addicting if you don’t keep it in check. I think Horace Kephart even said the same in his book, that is, that planning and packing your gear is often times even more fun than the actual trip, so this type of thing has been happening for a very long time

Being 65 now im also leaning towards a 15 liter gear bag. My BOB makes it all the way to my truck, then the essentials are transferred to the 15 liter when i get to the jungle here in Florida. Works out well with my arthritis in my back.

There isn’t anything wrong at all with the bushbaby it’s an awesome little knife and as you said paired with a machete or camp axe , personally I love the mora camp axe / hatchet you can do pretty much anything out there . O and I won’t go anywhere without my SAK in my pocket. Great vid Jake

Among numerous other things I have a Large Alice Pack from Forestry Suppliers which is made by Rothco. It looks almost identical to my Alice Pack I was gifted by my Uncle, late Vietnam era. Happy to have both but I get endless crap about new Alice because it's made by Rothco. Works great and no issues. Best To You Always. Keep Them Coming!!!
Excellent video! In regards to pouches,. I am a carpenter by trade and I have discovered the heavy duty stand up zipper utility pouches by Klein. (found in lowes or Home Depot. Things are bullet proof,. Different sizes and colors... I have some for my work buckets... EDC bag and hunting bag. That what works for me!
Most of my recent purchases have been replacements for worn out or lost gear, often the same as the previous items with one or two minor exceptions. I've stuck with my brand of water filter bottle because they are made locally and they have never let me down. The only change I'd make to your kit is I'd put some brightly coloured lanyards on the camo and OD green pouches because those things can just disappear in the dark. Yes, I learned this the hard way!!!
Frost River makes a nice canvas fishing pole sleeve for up to 24” pole pieces. I have used it will a 5 pc. Diawa Rod. Currently using a Eagle Claw “Pack It” 7’6” Fly/Spin setup...I also have several Grail filters (Their Awesome), I’ve started to use them similar to a water blatter when hiking with a Hardside Hydration Swig Rig...
I just ordered the Vertx 15 litre Long Walk pack. Usually when I head out to the woods on an afternoon woods romp I bring my canvas haversack. This pack seems like it would be a perfect back if I wanted to bring a little bit of extra gear while still being small and compact. Love your content. Keep up the good work.
Nice kit dude. In comparison,I found a hard side glasses case for cheap, and that's where I keep my headlamp for storage. It shouldn't be accidentally activated.
Love the Titanium GeoPress, I have a Grayl and bought the "Cup" myself. Love the setup. I still add a second, water bottle, (canteen) for additional water. An old surplus plastic army canteen gets warm water boiled over the fire and added as a bed warmer at night. When I press water through the Grayl, I fill the water in the canteen for additional water. Works for me every time.
I've been ignoring your channel for a couple of months now ever since my TH-cam algorithm first presented it to me. This is the first of your videos that I have watched and I've already gotten several good suggestions for things that I am considering trying out. I'm now a new subscriber. My Varusteleka Terava Jääkäripuukko 110 knife with a Boltaron thermoplastic sheath along with a package of Blade-Tech Tek-Lok knife sheath hardware is on its way from Finland to the United States as I type out this message. It will be paired up with a Varusteleka Terava Skrama 240 modern-day interpretation of a seax, which I purchased with the right-handed brown leather sheath. In the immediate future I plan to augment the 2 knives with a Silky Outback Gomboy saw for those instances where the Skrama 240 is going to require too great of an energy expenditure for the ultimate return in processed wood. Chopping is great but there are definitely times when a saw is the preferred choice in a wood processing tool. I'll definitely be watching more of your videos in the future.

JMHO, but softcore near pornagraphy has no place in the prepping, survival, bushcraft, backpacking, car camping, hunting, fishing, or archery communities.*
My 110 Jääkäripuukko came with such a sharp blade. I thought some of the other knives I bought came sharp, but the Jääkäripuukko factory edge is on another level.
Love my bush baby, and Genesis, and frontier lol, also my moras, my white river FC5, few no longer made hand forged blades, as well as well as a beloved swiss army knife etc... basically good edged tools are king in any outdoor craft. All have their purpose and comfort lvl for each individual IMHO. I also own many axes, hatchets and saws for various applications. Picking kit is a personal thing but overall the tool/tools u carry only need to cover needs for ur particular mission ie day, multi day (3+) through forever scenarios. Just my thoughts.
That's a great loadout but its not in a 50 lt. pack it can really be carried lol ya man knives 3 4 inch is about it with a machete is perfect I had one like that from Martin back when fly spin combo that was a great set .30 caliber barrel sleave
Campcraft outdoors makes a waxed canvas sleeve for folding saws. They make different sizes. Amazon has them about $18. Would work great for the travel rod depending on it’s length when broken down. I know they have a 16” one.
Eagle Claw used to make an spinning and fly combo kit in a soft case and i have a couple. I like the Grayl filter kit you have and would like to aquire one and the pouches. Ive used the lightweight silnylon pouches and while lightweight they just dont hold up well to abrasion and wear out and get frayed holes easily. The rest im all good and have a small sleep pad as i dont believe in browse beds and there are no leaves in the forests i frequent.
"NOT EVERYTHING IS A SURVIVAL SITUATION!" is the perfect comment. If you learn to survive with your regular kit you'll always be okay. There is a comfort in high stress situations in having tried and tested kit that is familiar to you. My personal take on the Grayl Titanium is that for £200 (about $270) I can buy another standard Grayl, a Pathfinder nesting cup and 2 replacement filters because I know if anything happens to my Grayl Outer my filter system is u/s. Very nice setup bud. My tastes vary from yours on some things more the knives than anything else....but the bush baby is an outstanding knife, I prefer a tracker, along with three others I carry minimal gear, long distance is my thing so some heavier gear is more out of necessity than anything else, like you said we use what we are comfortable with. I was a boy scout… 35 years ago, so I am just now really getting back into outdoors skills, and appreciate anyone who puts out information. More so when it is presented like you did “works for me, but may not work for you.
Not thing wrong with evolving with your gear, I’ve done it many times. Being older with some physical limitations has had me rethinking all my gear. At one time I liked the traditional, but now it just doesn’t make sense. Now I like to go lighter and have really streamlined my gear. I enjoy the bush much better now
Prol any old discarded tent or poncho sleeve can house the fishing pole. I re used a tent pouch for a cumfy pillow. I just chuck my jacket in there and raise my head off the ground with my pack pillow If youre out of ideas then an old sock should do well. or get paint ground cloth and sew it into a more custom outfit
A possible case for that compact pole as I’ve found that the bag from those folding chairs works great we put 2 pcs pole for transport purposes so they’ll stay safe 😎🇺🇸🤙🏼
Make yourself a rod carrier from 4" pvc light wall pipe and 2 end caps. Mine fits my rod AND my micro tackle box for sunfish, perch, catfish. Reel goes in the ruck. So much better to carry it in a tube than any other way, never break an eye or a tip again.
The moment someone receives such an expensive product for free and justifies a 30 dollar filter to replace to boot i begin to question that said content creator only is saying nice things to just keep receiving more free stuff cause 200$ for a water bottle that easily a titanium or stainless steel canteen cup and a sawyer can do more economically and be far more reasonably priced just rubs me the wrong way.
I just bought a Vest! Disperse the weight as they say... I have tried multiple waist packs, that Military stuff is the best. Molle, MMSS, Gen III... ALICE Stuff, well... The new Fighting Load Carrier! And oh to find Rain Gear as durable as the Gore-Tex... If I had an 'ol Lady... She'd be getting a Sewing Machine for Christmas. Her Company would be called, "The Patriot Raiment Co." LLC . "Not Even Cold or Wet" would be our slogan. Hey have you ever seen a "Happy Suit" or a "Marshmallow Suit" of the ECWCS Gen III stuff? "Camo"... Something more "Civil" may be in order at times.
Hi please forgive I am disabled and can not leave my room @ the nursing home so I live vicariously through people that enjoy the outdoors I was a horsemen and garderner plus did some skydiving (50 jumps over 2 summers) I call myself a marathon runner as well -- But I ran 20 miles NOT 26 1/4 miles @ a 7 min mile pace ... again sorry about all that my fishing skills were with a fillet knife and a skillet I saw someone cast with a slingshot with a pocket fishing set up what are your thoughts of casting using a slingshot ? thank you Peter
Good video. The Grayl filters and purifies much more than Sawyers. Sawyers are cheaper but do not do as much. Grayl has no competition. PFAS, heavy metals, viruses, etc. For the pouches: what’s the benefit over a Maxpedition pouch, or even just some Ziplocs for most things?
Actually the filter straws I just bought filter out more than the grayl and can do up to 5000 gals of water, they cost me 10 bucks a piece. The grayl had it's day but is now just a overpriced gimmick that people can show off how much money they are willing to spend.
If you live in a developed country i hate to break it to you but heavy metals and virus's aren't really in your water supplies a sawyer is just fine and grayl filters are overpriced overhyped nonsense that content creators are peddling cause they get their stuff for free for "unbiased reviews" or the reality of the matter shilling it cause hey free stuff am i right?

Gryal, got to say they are most likely a good filter, but I will not use one. It just erks me that they are nothing more than a copy of a 70's era design. Damn the name escapes me, but I had one. Back then, the price was less than a half days pay. The price of the "modern" filter seems to be about 1days pay or 1.5-2 days pay for titanium.
I don’t buy into the shtf scenarios, most guys who make videos on that are former military guys that try to push their ideologies to civilians making them think they’re gonna be fighting a war in their backyard acting like Rambo. I stick with real world applications and don’t do “what’s cool” just to get views. Likelihood That you’re gonna be in a E&E situation and can’t use a light is practically zero. Likelihood of you being in the woods past dark and need a light is 100% if you camp, hunt, ect.
Very true. Besides, light or not, with how common drones, infra red, and night vision are it wouldn’t make a difference. You could be standing with no light in pitch darkness where you can’t even see your hand in front of your face, and you would still light up like a Christmas tree.
The fishing kit me like but I personally like the crappie mini reel the rod. When I get my set up, I’ll go for crappie and bream, panfish are better IMO, than bass. As you have say, #PP. I’m a lover of bass fishing, so I shouldn’t have to really buy panfish bait because I get it when Walmart reduces the price. Some green 1lb line is excellent for panfish.
What if you took a pant leg and made a little pouch for the pole pieces? I bet that would work. I did that for our marshmallow roasting sticks to keep them together.
I like the idea of the Grayl. However, even the plastic version is to pricey for me. I already have an MSR filter that fits PFS and Nalgene bottles. When it wears out I might switch to the Grayl.
This is not a soft cover. But you can make a case from PVC put sponge 🧽 in both ends, glue one end on, the second have as a glue on but with a screw on lid. Hope this is helpful to you & the rod. Cheers ☕️☕️🎣 Dave
late to the party and you may not even see this but for a fishing rod sleeve you might be able to use and a old tent frame pole sleeve light weight and doesnt take up really anymore space
The only flack I have is the titanium Grayl. Man, that thing is every bit 200. And if it was the size of the 99 dollar one, I might would pull the trigger but dang. It’s smaller as you know. I’ve haven’t pulled the trigger on the 99, but I’ll probably wait until Christmas, hopefully they’ll have a deal on. I remember a couple, more like 3-4yrs ago, Grayl had a massive sale, they were like 50, 60, or 70, I’m 🤬🤬🤬 that I didn’t get it then.
I didnt see a folding saw in your kit [you may not need/use 1] I personally carry a saw with me for clearing a spot to chill ,shooting lanes, fishing spot and/or processing firewood [i use my saw constantly/its 1 of the most used tools I carry] ! Check out the Sven saw ...if your not already familiar its a collapsible bow saw an its ROCKS ...Ive used a dozen or more different folding saws [at work and in the woods] and NONE are as good/ useful as the Sven ! Its an actual REAL bow saw so it processes wood FAR better, faster an with less user fatigue than any folding saw EVER could ,it also come in a sizes from 15' to 21' ! The 15' is in my EDC bag and the 21' goes into my camping pack but I also have 1 that rides in my truck tool box and another 1 that lays around in my shop because they are THAT good ! Its a sort of crossover piece of gear yes its great for camping/hunting/hiking etc but its also good enough to use anywhere anytime ! I'm a welder ,I do alot of pipe fence repair for farmers/ranchers an the Sven saw is what I use to clear any brush or BS that's in my way while working [again like I said they are THAT good] ! Chopping is great but there are definitely times when a saw is the preferred choice in a wood processing tool.

*I REALLY stopped watching the newer bushcraft TH-cam channels when multiple female so-called bushcrafters started appearing as choices to watch and ALL of the thumbnail images included them wearing skimpy upper body clothing where their breasts were exposed by a minimum of 50% to as much as 75%, and that NO true outdoorswoman would EVER consider wearing while performing the skillsets that the video was supposed to be highlighting. JMHO, but softcore near pornagraphy has no place in the prepping, survival, bushcraft, backpacking, car camping, hunting, fishing, or archery communities.*
My 110 Jääkäripuukko came with such a sharp blade. I thought some of the other knives I bought came sharp, but the Jääkäripuukko factory edge is on another level.
Love my bush baby, and Genesis, and frontier lol, also my moras, my white river FC5, few no longer made hand forged blades, as well as well as a beloved swiss army knife etc... basically good edged tools are king in any outdoor craft. All have their purpose and comfort lvl for each individual IMHO. I also own many axes, hatchets and saws for various applications. Picking kit is a personal thing but overall the tool/tools u carry only need to cover needs for ur particular mission ie day, multi day (3+) through forever scenarios. Just my thoughts.
That's a great loadout but its not in a 50 lt. pack it can really be carried lol ya man knives 3 4 inch is about it with a machete is perfect I had one like that from Martin back when fly spin combo that was a great set .30 caliber barrel sleave

Campcraft outdoors makes a waxed canvas sleeve for folding saws. They make different sizes. Amazon has them about $18. Would work great for the travel rod depending on it’s length when broken down. I know they have a 16” one.
Eagle Claw used to make an spinning and fly combo kit in a soft case and i have a couple.
I like the Grayl filter kit you have and would like to aquire one and the pouches. Ive used the lightweight silnylon pouches and while lightweight they just dont hold up well to abrasion and wear out and get frayed holes easily. The rest im all good and have a small sleep pad as i dont believe in browse beds and there are no leaves in the forests i frequent.
"NOT EVERYTHING IS A SURVIVAL SITUATION!" is the perfect comment. If you learn to survive with your regular kit you'll always be okay. There is a comfort in high stress situations in having tried and tested kit that is familiar to you. My personal take on the Grayl Titanium is that for £200 (about $270) I can buy another standard Grayl, a Pathfinder nesting cup and 2 replacement filters because I know if anything happens to my Grayl Outer my filter system is u/s. Use a cotton sock to slide your reel into, works better than anything else, plus keeps it clean

My tastes vary from yours on some things more the knives than anything else....but the bush baby is an outstanding knife, I prefer a tracker, along with three others I carry minimal gear, long distance is my thing so some heavier gear is more out of necessity than anything else, like you said we use what we are comfortable with. I appreciate your perspective. I just discovered your channel. I was a boy scout… 35 years ago, so I am just now really getting back into outdoors skills, and appreciate anyone who puts out information. More so when it is presented like you did “works for me, but may not work for you.

Not thing wrong with evolving with your gear, I’ve done it many times. Being older with some physical limitations has had me rethinking all my gear. At one time I liked the traditional, but now it just doesn’t make sense. Now I like to go lighter and have really streamlined my gear. I enjoy the bush much better now

Prol any old discarded tent or poncho sleeve can house the fishing pole. I re used a tent pouch for a cumfy pillow. I just chuck my jacket in there and raise my head off the ground with my pack pillow If youre out of ideas then an old sock should do well. or get paint ground cloth and sew it into a more custom outfit

A possible case for that compact pole as I’ve found that the bag from those folding chairs works great we put 2 pcs pole for transport purposes so they’ll stay safe 😎🇺🇸🤙🏼

Some good equipment
A folding bucksaw pouch might work for the fishing rod. Those flexible gear ties might be better than rubber bands.
Make yourself a rod carrier from 4" pvc light wall pipe and 2 end caps. Mine fits my rod AND my micro tackle box for sunfish, perch, catfish.
Reel goes in the ruck.
So much better to carry it in a tube than any other way, never break an eye or a tip again.
I've never heard anyone addressing the funkiness that comes with drinking from the same vessel multiple days. How do you address this with the grayl?
You can pick up soft sleeves that keep your rod protected inside of rod tubes at fly fishing shops or catalogs
for fishing pole, check out sheaths for squirrel cooker,, buck saw bags, etc.. Campcraft and PFS.

I don't use the Grayl because the filters don't last as long as the Sawyers straws do, and they take up too much space.

The moment someone receives such an expensive product for free and justifies a 30 dollar filter to replace to boot i begin to question that said content creator only is saying nice things to just keep receiving more free stuff cause 200$ for a water bottle that easily a titanium or stainless steel canteen cup and a sawyer can do more economically and be far more reasonably priced just rubs me the wrong way.

The Grayl filters and purifies much more than Sawyers. Sawyers are cheaper but do not do as much. Grayl has no competition. PFAS, heavy metals, viruses, etc.
For the pouches: what’s the benefit over a Maxpedition pouch, or even just some Ziplocs for most things?
Actually the filter straws I just bought filter out more than the grayl and can do up to 5000 gals of water, they cost me 10 bucks a piece.
The grayl had it's day but is now just a overpriced gimmick that people can show off how much money they are willing to spend.
If you live in a developed country i hate to break it to you but heavy metals and virus's aren't really in your water supplies a sawyer is just fine and grayl filters are overpriced overhyped nonsense that content creators are peddling cause they get their stuff for free for "unbiased reviews" or the reality of the matter shilling it cause hey free stuff am i right?

Gryal, got to say they are most likely a good filter, but I will not use one. It just erks me that they are nothing more than a copy of a 70's era design. Damn the name escapes me, but I had one.
Back then, the price was less than a half days pay. The price of the "modern" filter seems to be about 1days pay or 1.5-2 days pay for titanium.

Again, having a light is good for emergencies such as caves but if shtf they can give away your position making you a target from far away.
I don’t buy into the shtf scenarios, most guys who make videos on that are former military guys that try to push their ideologies to civilians making them think they’re gonna be fighting a war in their backyard acting like Rambo. I stick with real world applications and don’t do “what’s cool” just to get views.
Likelihood That you’re gonna be in a E&E situation and can’t use a light is practically zero.
Likelihood of you being in the woods past dark and need a light is 100% if you camp, hunt, ect.

Very true. Besides, light or not, with how common drones, infra red, and night vision are it wouldn’t make a difference. You could be standing with no light in pitch darkness where you can’t even see your hand in front of your face, and you would still light up like a Christmas tree.
I take a spare spool for my reel so that I can have 2 different line test as a backup. Hate to waste a good day of fishing.
You should be able to find a soft tripod case that will fit that collapsible fishing pole.
The fishing kit me like but I personally like the crappie mini reel the rod. When I get my set up, I’ll go for crappie and bream, panfish are better IMO, than bass. As you have say, #PP. I’m a lover of bass fishing, so I shouldn’t have to really buy panfish bait because I get it when Walmart reduces the price. Some green 1lb line is excellent for panfish.

I like the idea of the Grayl. However, even the plastic version is to pricey for me. I already have an MSR filter that fits PFS and Nalgene bottles. When it wears out I might switch to the Grayl.
Daiwa have a retractable rod series which you can mount your spinning rod and comes with a pouch
Xl tube socks make a good sleeve for that type of rod

Best water filter is a First Need nothing touches it.
Get a cotton felt gun show rifle case and cut it to length for you fishing rod.
This is not a soft cover. But you can make a case from PVC put sponge 🧽 in both ends, glue one end on, the second have as a glue on but with a screw on lid.

late to the party and you may not even see this but for a fishing rod sleeve you might be able to use and a old tent frame pole sleeve light weight and doesnt take up really anymore space
The only flack I have is the titanium Grayl. Man, that thing is every bit 200. And if it was the size of the 99 dollar one, I might would pull the trigger but dang. It’s smaller as you know. I’ve haven’t pulled the trigger on the 99, but I’ll probably wait until Christmas, hopefully they’ll have a deal on. I remember a couple, more like 3-4yrs ago, Grayl had a massive sale, they were like 50, 60, or 70, I’m 🤬🤬🤬 that I didn’t get it then.

I personally carry a saw with me for clearing a spot to chill ,shooting lanes, fishing spot and/or processing firewood [i use my saw constantly/its 1 of the most used tools I carry] !
Check out the Sven saw ...if your not already familiar its a collapsible bow saw an its ROCKS ...Ive used a dozen or more different folding saws [at work and in the woods] and NONE are as good/ useful as the Sven !
Its an actual REAL bow saw so it processes wood FAR better, faster an with less user fatigue than any folding saw EVER could ,it also come in a sizes from 15' to 21' !
The 15' is in my EDC bag and the 21' goes into my camping pack but I also have 1 that rides in my truck tool box and another 1 that lays around in my shop because they are THAT good !
Its a sort of crossover piece of gear yes its great for camping/hunting/hiking etc but its also good enough to use anywhere anytime !
I'm a welder ,I do alot of pipe fence repair for farmers/ranchers an the Sven saw is what I use to clear any brush or BS that's in my way while working [again like I said they are THAT good] !
