    I’ve had an RV4 for 3 years. I also carry an oztent hexagon gazebo. Both are quick and great quality

    G'day -- expat American who's been in Australia for the past 25 years here. Thanks for the well-reasoned review of a good Aussie company. My wife and I alternate between the rooftop tent for times when we're camping one night per stop, the Oztent for when we're setting up a base camp, and swags for when it's cold. You are right about the front awning on the Oztent. It's really good. If you get one of the Foxwing 270 degree awnings from Oztent for the Jeep, they match up. My other tip is the peaked awning kit and side walls. Sweeet!

    Good review. My biggest gripe is the main vents have the canvas on the outside vs inside. I like when the mesh is on the outside so you can easily vent it.

    This was actually a really good video; detailed information, comprehensive review, and pretty slick production. Not sure why it hasn't gotten more traction; IMHO, it should.
    Thanks for sharing!

    Get in touch with Drifta in Australia .. they have a brilliant larger stronger bag, better poles and provide a kit for changing to larger eyelets on the awning to suit the better poles...

    Great overview. I've had my RV3 for about 3 years now and it's held up great. Probably my favorite tent setup, including RTTs, so far. We use a similar setup to you, oztent and exped megamat duo. Other than the obvious gripes about the tent such as sizes and weight my biggest complaint about it is the bag. It can be a chore to get it all back in correctly and then tighten the zipper. I wish the made the bags with just a little of extra room for that reason. You can get a larger size bag from Drifta but you'd have to import it. Apparently Oztent is coming out with a new tent bag that looks like a rollable ski/snowboard bag. So far I'm still using the original bag but will likely upgrade to one of the alternatives down the road.

      Drifta make a bigger bag for it 👍

      I have an Rv 4 and I bought a RV 5 bag. It is big enough to add extra poles for the peaked awning. Very reasonable price. Ordered from Oztent USA. I also got a replacement pole at a good price and some other odds and ends. I was really impressed that these items were available at really low prices.
      My old rv 4 bag was a real pain. Buy the RV 5 bag and you will be well pleased.

      it's been awesome! just returned from 10 days overlanding with all 1 night stays except one - that would've been irritating with a slower to setup tent but the oztent made it quick and easy and we loved the extra room. good luck!

      @@lawrenceporter3723 the depth and width is plenty for our massive exped duo with room to spare on all sides. we sleep with our heads against the back wall and with the back window panel rolled up, we have a great stargazing window without feeling cramped. The height is 75" tall but only at the door - I'm 6'1" and need to crouch to stand up anywhere else in the tent. Here are the listed 'setup size' dimensions off the oztent site 240cm (W) × 240cm (D) × 190cm (H)
      94" (W) x 94" (D) x 75" (H)

      @@anybackroad8849 Thanks very much, I'm not really going to camp in the winter, debating if this would be a good buy or to go with a high height tent like Big Agnes/Browining

    • @anybackroad8849
      @anybackroad8849  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lawrenceporter3723 it looks like you'll save some $$ going with the other options, and they'll be more lightweight compared to the 50# Oztent. If you don't mind that and the longer setup time, you won't go wrong either way. The most important thing to us is to make it as easy as possible to get out there and the Oztent does that for us. Cheers!

    Hi Heinz, over here some of the big names are Coleman, Big Agnes, Kodiak and a few others carried by our larger camping stores, plus all the more technical backpacking/mountaineering kinds probably also found in Germany like Marmot, Mountain Hardware and so on. Oztents are here but definitely more rare and exotic. Thanks for the question

      thx! it's an older Rocketbox - I can't find the specific model. I did a quick search and found a 7.5 foot very similar model on ebay - i know many of the newer ones are too short, but the older ones are still out there. good luck!

    Liked the video review! So now, after having it a couple of years, how does it do in wind? I tend to camp where it seems like it's always windy - my current "instant" tent collapsed on me last week in Death Valley and I need something that will hold up in high wind areas. Looking at these, Shiftpod or Kodiak. Any helpful opinions would be appreciated!!

    • @anybackroad8849
      @anybackroad8849  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thx for watching! it does great in the wind, the frame is super strong. the one issue we had was the tent really does need those guylines rigged if it's going to be super rainy to tension the top for proper drainage, otherwise the rain puddles on the top and could stretch things out. We love ours and enjoy it although sometimes I think a smaller packed size would be more practical - we're lucky to have our big jeep box to help. Good luck with your choice!

      @@anybackroad8849 Thanks for your answer, it definitely helped in our decision! We ended up getting one of these. Now, I just need some time off to go and try it out!! And yes, I agree, a smaller pack size would be great, it won't fit inside my roof rack, but will on top of it...
      Thanks again for the info!

    Very nice review! My fiancée just ordered the RV-4 Plus model and cannot wait for it to arrive. I was wondering, what type of camping matt/mattress do you use with this tent? I like that it's far less bulky than other ones you can purchase

    • @anybackroad8849
      @anybackroad8849  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! We LOVE that mattress - it's an Exped Megamat. They are pricey, but we used to have a camper van with a fancy expensive mattress, and the megamat is so good I would just use that instead if we did another van. Our friend tried a cheaper amazon alternative but ended up going to the exped because the quality and build is just so much better. Thx for watching

    which rocket box do you have? currently considering the rv-4 and being able to fit it inside a skybox 12 (similar to rocket box) seems like a better option than strapping it to the roof rack...

    • @anybackroad8849
      @anybackroad8849  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, I don't remember the exact model but it fits our RV4 with just a few inches to spare on either side - pretty perfect! I'm guessing it's the 92" length and we've had it since the early 2000s. As long as the inside dimension is at least 82"+ in length (the RV4 comes in around 79" from the Oztent site) it's great to be able to throw it in the box, no worries. good luck

    I would worry that high wind storm would come up and bend the frame. The tent would be trashed after that.

    Are you aware you can connect the front awnings of your RV4 and RV3 with the Oztent RV Awning Connector? th-cam.com/video/27056Wi9YcQ/w-d-xo.html. I have an RV4 (with the fly) and want to add either another RV4 or RV3 with the connector. I also have 2 Oztent Side Awnings th-cam.com/video/tFWbZ-AYp1c/w-d-xo.html which I would put onto a common side of the 2 connected tent front awnings. Would mean I don't need to carry a gazebo.
