Colt Starting - Bucking Out a Colt Day 1 - Gunther

  • This video shows only the bucking out part of this colt's first day in training. He is cow horse bred, little, but quick and talented. Our colt starter Krissy Wilson did a great job getting him covered and then continuing on with the training process. This colt is very feely and scared so we spent about 3 hours with him this first day. Again this video is only one part of the process. We will be posting a full Day 1 training video with commentary from trainer Mark Teal soon.

    When I was a kid I was really impressed of the cowboy ways of riding n training there horses ,but in the last 30 years iv learned a lot ,knowledge of understanding horses has come along way since then ,iv broken many horses ,from wild to home bred and none have bucked ,they have all taken it like it was an everyday thing and dint bat an eyelid ....its called groundwork ,understanding and trust

    A bunch of haters! all i saw was a good looking well cared for well fed colt bucking for his first saddeling and first ride and that girl is a hell of a hand, she never rushes him, jerks on him, confuses him or even tries to punish the bucking! she rides it out like a hell of a cowgirl and lets him process everything. great job!

      Teri Hale anyone in there right mind would want her in the pen with you and she has a good seat too it’s didn’t come apart to much but im sure she would have handled it if it had. Ive rode a lot of colts that have came apart hard core and I can tell you she was where she needed to be in the saddle

      NJE what do you mean bucked you? That leaves it open to a lot of interpretations because if it only bucked with you on it or bucked you off you need to be banned from owning or riding a horse for the rest or your life. I have had lots of colts brought to me that are unrideable and you can bet they are when they leave but I don’t get on a ride like I have something to prove I put them through my own ground work routine and then I get on when they are ready and most don’t buck much but I have yet to come close to wanting to shoot a horse for anything they did

    Nice job sticking in the saddle. Nothing wrong with the method, the horse just had to get the experience of the saddle and rider on him and that it wasn't a threat. Once he figured that out - on his own, I might add - he was fine. For him to learn you have to give him an opportunity to learn, which is what was done.

    I went to a Monty Roberts seminar and watched him gentle the horse using his mind and communicating with the horse and bonding with him. I bought an 18 month paint mare and spent a lot of time with her and a lot of ground work- she was never afraid of me and followed me around like a dog. When she was 2 I saddled her for the first time- no issues at all. I slowly got on her and she walked off. That was it. I got off and left it at that. Roberts is amazing- he knows the mind of a horse and draws them to him not by force but by making them feel safe. This video showed a horse that did not take the saddle as he was not ready. And then after all this he puts the girl on him and she excelled but this was a mess- not well done at all.

    I mean obviously his horses are well behaved considering the horse stands ground tied in the background for a good amount of time. Also, both horses look very well taken care of and loved. Just because you don't use the same method doesn't mean it's wrong, it just means it's different. This is obviously what works for them so lighten up!

    Most of these comments are ridiculous. Everybody has a different idea of how much ground work is required before a first ride. We have no idea what was previously done by watching this video. All horses are different and can react differently. People need to relax, this horse will be fine. One thing you can agree on is that she did a great job riding out that buck.

    I think that all of the people that commented negatively below need to realize that there are many ways to train horses. This way did not harm the horse in any way, and it taught him that he can't get his rider off when he bucks. I agree that there are ways that involve groundwork and stuff first that might be better for some horses and that's great, there's nothing wrong with doing it that way either, but they started that colt by bucking him out, and there's nothing wrong with that.

    i have a question for all those who are against this way of starting a horse.
    If I am riding a horse and it starts to buck for whatever reason should I then get off the horse?
    If I stay on then I am doing this horrible thing of bucking out a horse.
    If I get off I am teaching the horse that if it bucks riders will get off its back.

    • @HoneyHollowHomestead
      @HoneyHollowHomestead 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Russell Oriely Train it not to buck in the first place. It can, and has been done by many. Even I have done it and I'm not an expert.

    • @russelloriely6343
      @russelloriely6343 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MotherOfManyHorses
      never said it can't be done.
      you never answered my question.
      what do you do if this animal starts to buck?
      we'll say a bee stings it in its nuts.
      no matter how well trained any horse is you can never be 100% sure.
      so answer the question.
      stay on or get off?

    • @HoneyHollowHomestead
      @HoneyHollowHomestead 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Russell Oriely Each scenario needs to be evaluated on an individual basis. Is the rider in more danger to stay on or to jump off? It depends on the horse, the environment, the rider, etc., a lot of factors go into it. Personally, I'd do all I could to prevent the buck in the first place. BUT training a horse to saddle is not the same as dealing with a freakish event.

    • @russelloriely6343
      @russelloriely6343 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MotherOfManyHorses
      so your not going to answer the question.,
      if you bail the horse learns bucking removes the rider regardless of the reason for the buck.
      you have then trained it to buck
      If you stay on you are in essence doing what this gentleman is and bucking out the horse.
      anything you do with a horse is always training.

    • @HoneyHollowHomestead
      @HoneyHollowHomestead 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Russell Oriely I did answer your question, just not the way you wanted me to.If I have a horse that I have successfully trained to not buck, and I ride that horse for 10 years with no incident of bucking. Then, all of a sudden one day a hornet craws between my horse's saddle pad and back, subsequently stinging the horse and sending it into a buck (which it may or may not do). The horse manages to buck me off, and I survive. Have I now taught that horse to buck to get me off? I don't think so. You are simply trying to defend your way of saddle breaking. It's probably the only way you know. I'm just pointing out, it's not the only way and I don't think your way is the better way. I prefer to teach a horse that if there is a saddle, or even just a human on or around them, bucking and kicking are NOT acceptable behaviors.

    These people start colts! They look damn good at it . There ain’t nothing you do on the ground you can’t do in the saddle . I bet the horses they ride are ten times the horse than your 800 dollar paint you bought off Craigslist that took you two months to saddle because Clinton Anderson told you so . Anyone that says this way is wrong are the same people to buy a crippled up “dead broke “ gelding from your local horse trader . People can see you coming from a mile away . Stick to your helmets and ground work . Give people like this a call when you need the horse you started fixed lol

    To those of you whining about safety, it is her choice...not yours!!! There are a million ways of training out there. I'm not much of a bronc rider so I don't go for the cowboy way, but it doesn't bother me when people do. I've known some horses that you needed to just dig in there and go. My filly bucked 3 circles around me when I first saddled her but never bucked since, rider or no. She's done just about everything you can imagine a trail horse doing and she's just about 9 mo. under saddle.

      Alissia Pancake yeah your wrong. If I didn't use natural horsemanship to work and teach horses from the ground up my clients would end up on meat truck or a bullet in head. It isn't whispering it is listening and teaching. All my horses even the "lost cause and dangerous" ones learn walk, trot, lope, back, in and out before I ever place a saddle on. Even my TWH who tried to kill owner before me. When I was down with him we only needed halter. My others are the same you do not make a toddler write name before teaching alphabet. If you do ground work first you do not have this reaction. There is absolutely no reason to ever start off with force and confusion which is all this is.

    I've never seen a horse try so hard to get a saddle and/or rider off. I've been aroud horses since I was a little girl. What I do is desensitize them to EVERYTHING. Cars, loud noises, small animals, screaming, deer, ropes, blankets, etc. I teach them to respond to pressure long before breaking them. Then, we put the bridle and bit on. Once they got that we put a saddle pad on, after that, an english saddle since it's light, then put on a 50 lb bag of dog food. THEN you're ready for a rider.

    Nothing wrong with this breaking method at all. Its a standard method actually that produces sound horses. Anyone who says different is either an idiot, doesn't know anything about how horse starting/breaking works, hasn't experienced it first hand, or they've only ever learned one or two methods and think they can disprove anything else they feel doesn't work. As for letting the horse buck, you wanna stop a 1,000 lb animal from throwing a tantrum? Have fun with that. Its best to let the horse get in a tizzy if he feels like it and let him figure out on his own that the saddle isn't going to kill him. And just like any other animal, horses have different personalities, so some horses can be trained with more gentle methods, but others sometimes have to be treated a little more like a bronc if they're tougher or more flinchy than the rest. I've used this method a few times myself with horses that were a little more feely and spookish and they ended up becoming very sound and calm after long days of hard work. Dedication and flexibility is what horse training comes down to. Just cuz you think your method is better doesn't mean it would work with the horse you want to use it on.

    I'm sick and tired of people that knee jerk every time somethings doesn't go like butter as if something's wrong if life isn't lived in a protected bubble. Best to be in a more controlled environment in the bull pen than to wait until later and have a "freak" accident.
    The horse bucked. That sometimes happens even with preparation. These days, seems people freak at the slightest surprise. Since when is ANYTHING predictable and guaranteed?
    And it's incredible to me that whiner know it alls think it's incorrect to teach a horse to saddle or mount on the off side. Let's see where you end up, on a steep trail, where the only side you can get on is the off side!

    If you yank the cinch up tight the first time, yes, they're going to flip out. Most likely even become "girthy". Meaning every time that you tighten the cinch/girth, they will bite or flip out. If you leave the cinch loose and let them get used to it, then you won't have a problem. The other thing I noticed was after the horse accepted the saddle, the guy was getting him to lunge. The thing is, horses know cues to lunge at that stage of training with ground work. The cues were correct.

    Nice job and good job hanging on. I learned how to train different but your way seems to work well for you, without being "mean". Nice method especially if you have several colts and fillies to break/start.

    Yeehaaww!! Lol i always wonder what my crazy mare was like starting.. She was also a cutting horse, chasin' em buffs!!! Now she spooks off and races after a cat as if it were a little black calf or somthing.. I love her

    good god that woman is talented!.......and there's nothing wrong with this method....people are so sensitive sometimes .....this is a highly effective way to train, let them figure it out them self for a while, there's nothing wrong with that

    FYI My posts are not meant to attack or insult this person, she is gritty and is simply doing what SHE knows. I hate bad information that can get someone hurt. This is not just a family video....it is posted as a training video. Way too many trainers out there....choose yours wisely folks.

    Well, the only thing I'll say is that when you train a horse and he bucks (doesn't matter if you put on him a saddle or rider) it means you are doing something wrong/too fast.

      My more only bucked first time because she lost sight of me when I was on her back and being so codependent as she was, she freaked out. But second time on she was fine. No other horse I have broke has bucked at all. Hopefully my guy this Sunday doesn't either!

    Pretty obvious the naysayers on this have never had the boss haul you a bunch of broncs and expected you to be doctoring cattle on them in a few weeks. That colt will be earning his feed and be a good saddle horse by the time you get yours saddled.

    I'm fine with letting a horse buck when they're starting. Though I try to prevent it with building the foundation but it's not horrible to let them buck and realize the saddle is not going to hurt them or come off when they buck. Typically the horse will figure that out quickly and calm down. Different ways of training for everyone, everyone thinks they're an expert lol. Personally IMO, you did a good job training your way. :)

      Yes, every horse acts and reacts differently and it is up to the trainer / rider to be adjustable for the best out come for the horse. Every one was safe and not harmed , that makes for a great day.

    They didn't terrorize the horse. All horses are different, as are their reactions to the first time being saddled. Some are quiet, some react like this. They never beat the horse, or abused it. The woman was even rubbing the horse's face in an attempt to calm it down.

    at 31 seconds, just tossing the saddle on like that, and that young horse didn't do more than he did,
    he's showing he's trying to work with humans despite the rough approach.

    Only takes one fall. I was literally just walking a horse bareback, the horse had an injury we didn't know about, tripped and fell and I went flying and got a concussion. My helmet saved my life. Head injuries aren't worth looking cool.

    I would have given him a couple more days under saddle before riding but other than that great video. I always let my horses buck out whether they're just starting or have 10 years of training. The saddle is noisy and flaps against him but he learns on his own that its noisy but its not dangerous to him and he burns off excess energy in the process.

    This is actually THE safest way for horse and rider to start a colt under saddle. Again for the horse AND the rider. It is just another form of desenstizing. If you don't know this, then you don't know what starting 2-year olds is all about. The colt figured out on his own and wasn't scared. That is a HUGE accomplishment for the first saddle and ride. This is a very feely cow bred horse. They stayed calm and towed the line. The only thing I might have done different is let go of his face.

  • @maryc5416
    @maryc5416 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that groundwork should have been done and it would have prevented some of the bucking, but you do need to realize that some horses no matter what are going to buck. Its just the way some horses are. And real cowboys and cowgirls DO just slap a saddle on and buck it out. I don't agree with it, but it works for them and they aren't hurting the horse, so just let them do what works for them. I commend the girl for her great riding skills! She was stuck like glue!
