I have a MY20 XC90 R Design after selling my Golf R Wolfsburg wagon. I have been pleasantly surprised at how good this big car drives.
I have been using the pop up compartment in the boot for securing shopping bags to stop them rolling around in that huge space - works a treat.

Great review Paul! I picked up the MY20 Inscription 9 days ago in this same Thunder Grey colour. 600km later, it’s such a comfortable, serene ride on 21inch wheels even without air suspension. PilotAssist on both city and freeway driving is very impressive as the Bowers and Wilkins 19 speaker sound system is insanely good. Extremely happy purchase!

as a owner of 2019 XC90 i confirm that this is the best car i ever had compared to the other SUV that i had which was from long time ago Porsche Cayenne Turbo first generation. The XC90 is exactly as you described it and i love driving in as a daily driver with no complain whatsoever.

I bought a 2018 R design diesel new, it's been a great car to cart around 3 young kids. Plenty of space for everyone. Great economy getting around 800klms per tank city driving and out on the open road will do 1100klms fully loaded.
Downsides - wish I got the air suspension, passenger seat has a small squeak every now and then and the breaks squeal at low speeds occasionally.
Would I buy again - Yes

I drove one of these for ~3,500km in 2017 in the USA. A Inscription T6 Turbo/Supercharged model. Was an amazing family car - good on fuel, went well, tonnes of room and super comfy seats. Black with Tan Leather. It's a pity they are so expensive in comparison here in australia. At the time it was ~$60k USD (About $80K AUD) vs $120K AUD here in Australia.

    • @CarExpertAus

@carexpert Friends picked up a black XC90 demo with the wood grain trim interior and the Bowers and Wilkins sound system specced. Finally got to have a look and a drive in it after lock down, and I found myself really liking the wood trim. Looked and felt really nice.
The Bowers and Wilkins system sounded *awesome*.
Had a quick drive in it and as you said, the engine is responsive and the driveline and chassis seems to be very well sorted.

On towing. We tow a Boeckmann horse float, made in Germany, that max’s out at 2400 kgs, so it sits at the XC90’s max limit. Euro design and looks the part when they sit together. It tows it beautifully. Wouldn’t really know it was 2000 kgs behind the XC90. My only issue was finding a spot for the brake controller.

Hi Paul. Great review. I’m now on my second xc90 R Design D5. First we didn’t option the air suspension. Worst decision we made. Our current one has it and it defiantly a way better car to drive. The boot thing is meant to seperate your groceries from rolling around the boot. Personally never used it. Volvo claim we should be getting somewhere in the 5L to 100km. Definitely not getting any where near that. More like 8L to 100km. Bit disappointing. Over a great family car been a good car.

      Why don't I like Volvo's...
I think they drive harsh and stiff, the all touch plastic infotainment system is not user friendly and requires the driver to take eyes off the road too often in order to make heating/AC and other adjustments, Although they look quite nice I think the leather seats are too hard and not a good choice for long distance driving. Overall, I just do not think Volvo's are worthy of the luxury brand label and are over priced. I think the only descent vehicle in the Volvo line-up is the V-series wagon.

@@dorado0359 I do agree, the ride can be rough at times and my 2016’s road noise was more than I would have preferred- a much tighter/sportier ride than a Lexus 470 I had back in the day, but I do love the gadgets and figuring out all the hidden goodies, but that’s me. My 2021 rides really nicely and is much quieter, but it’s new, so we’ll see. I think voice command recognition is key in these cars, unless you’re a gadget nerd (like me). My 80 year old mom would not fair well with the tech offered by Volvo. I’ve tried to get her out of her 2009 Lexus 460 and into the S90, but she would lose her mind. Do you have any suggestions for a luxury sedan that would be more user friendly for an 80 year old with the energy of a 50yo and a fairly decent knowledge of iOS devices? Thank you for your honest opinion.

Too bad Volvo HQ engineers are changed and their coding is a mess, too many bugs and too many fixes which introducing new software bugs, which effect safety and driveability too. :/
They should've kept the old guys, and not outsource everything to cheapo countries..

Volvo has no long term reliability and XC90 rarely ranks well in reliability ratings, Volvo is owned by Geely a Chinese manufacturer, poor sales volumes in Australia ie 5000 Volvos sold out of 1 million new cars per year and poor resale value ie depreciates rapidly, limited back up service, AEB recall brake failure, has massive transmission problems etc etc but this "Car Expert" won't tell you this - really this video is waste of time
