    Not offering a 6 cylinder engine is the main reason why the XC90 didn't destroy the competition. This is by far the best looking SUV out there. But 4cylinders and luxury just don't work together even in the downsizing world. All the other manufactures manage to offer 6 cylinders, why did volvo cheap out? thanks for the video!

    • @andrewcampbell7030
      @andrewcampbell7030 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      didinos we had a D5 as our family car, just replaced it with an X5. The Volvo broke down twice and had a very rough engine (albeit quite tourqey), X5 is a league above in handling and build quality is noticeably better.

    • @frederikmeire
      @frederikmeire 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andrewcampbell7030 we have a D5 XC90 aswell. I agree with what you say. Our car was one of the first cars of the production line 2015 (not a first edition) and it had alot of electrical problems and blew a turbo hose 2 times. Now we've orderd the X5 45e, it's like a night and day difference in refinement between the two.
      My biggest problem with volvo is, them not keeping up to date with the competition. They bring out a superb model in 2016 and don't refine it enough untill 2022 recently announced when the new xc90 will be released.

    • @adrianbergqvist8622
      @adrianbergqvist8622 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BC a 4 cylinedr is better for the environment. They don't develope new fossil fuel engines. They have been focusing on electric engines and hybrids. You dont need a 6 cylinder when the T8 and T8 exists

    • @andrewcampbell7030
      @andrewcampbell7030 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adrian Bergqvist not sure that’s right - the BMW is faster, nicer to drive and better fuel economy in all conditions than the 4 pot Volvo. It felt like it was being worked too hard for the weight it was pulling. We can also go down the rabbit hole of net net pollution of new cleaner diesels vs. Other engines, but that’s a long post...

    • @frederikmeire
      @frederikmeire 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adrianbergqvist8622 to be fair, the 4 cylinders are to small fo these kind of cars.
      i have not driven the 25d X5 but i'm guessing that one will be lackluster aswell.
      and believe me that the consumption on those 4cylinders is just as bad or as good as a 6 cylinder would be. the new 45e has a 6 cylinder petrol engine because BMW saw that the previous generation 4 cylinder petrol was not better in consumption.

      Clarkson had the Generation before this one. And he loved it. But I don't know which engine was in his car. For the first XC90 generation, you could get a great V8 engine.

    • @sarleoon
      @sarleoon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Livesinthe Shadowsofthenight He owned three from the previous generation, and he owns one of this current generation, a T8. Also, why is this a piece of shit, it´s better in almost every way than the old one, is handles better, is more refined and luxurious, as well as more spacious in the rearmost seats. The engines might be 4-cylinders, but they are way more powerful than even the V8 in the old one, and the transmission on the T6 can now actually handle the torque of the engine.

    I bought my first Volvo in September, a B5 xc90. Absolutely love the car , I use it to tow a 1600kg caravan . Even though the engine is on the small side it tows Effortlessly. All 5 rear seats folded down there’s bags of room for our stuff & wee dog. I had a look at the discovery as I’m a big Land Rover fan , I’ve had 3 Freelanders over the years . My previous car was a Freelander 2 metropolis, had that car for 5 years without any problems. I just couldn’t justify an extra £10k for a disco with the same spec as my inscription. Volvo also offer new car sales the option of a 5 year service plan for £600, that’s about the price for 1 major service on the disco.

    Get a V90 (Cross Country if you really need the extra ground clearance). It's 4wd, not preposterously huge, and doesn't look like a van with windows. (And other drivers will thank you for not having headlights at a height that blinds people who aren't in SUVs.)

    • @julianevans9548
      @julianevans9548 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Modern headlights: 'We've made them incredibly bright so you'll see brilliantly' - but the people who are coming towards you (or have you in their rear view mirror if you're in an SUV) won't see at all.

    • @julianevans9548
      @julianevans9548 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mike W For some things, you don't need research: we have our own experience. I don't know what variety the lights that glare on modern cars are, but I know that they blind me more than older cars. And the vast majority of people I've spoken to about this agree.
      I'm not decrying research per se, but I've read research that claims that smoking one cigarette a day is just as harmful as 10 a day (proven cobblers). I.e. research is not infallible, and is often used by people to 'prove' what they want to prove.
      I've also read research that claims that there is no evidence to support the existence of menstrual pain.
      When 'research' contradicts what you know from your own experience, it's just not correct. If 50% of people say something hurts, it hurts.
      If I find modern lights more blinding then they're more blinding for me.
      If most people find modern lights more blinding then they're more blinding.
      I'd be interested to see this research (was it independent - i.e. not done by car or lighting manufacturers - and was it peer-reviewed?), and I'd be interested to hear others' views on it - perhaps the majority don't agree with the people I know.

    • @julianevans9548
      @julianevans9548 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mike W auto dimming headlights are definitely an issue (why put them on cars until/unless they work 100% perfectly? - much like any 'auto-driving' features), but I'd say are supplementary to this. SUV's are worse because their lights are higher, in much the same way as the dazzling is worse if a car is coming up a hill towards you.
      I've even been dazzled by someone's modern lights being on main beam on a relatively empty motorway (don't know if this was because of the auto dimming feature).

    • @rotorhead5006
      @rotorhead5006 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@julianevans9548 auto-dipping, and those poxy "smart" LED lamps that supposedly mask the patch where oncoming vehicles are. Great on a straight, flat piece of road... utter gash where hills (particularly crests) are concerned!

I work from home so do a lot of local trips, and occasional jaunt to national parks around UK, so PHEV might work well. 400hp (I will probably Polestar upgrade it for 10% torque too) for fun, and batteries for local silent driving in comfort. 7 seats for family incl. grandparents or acres of garden waste, lol. Where I work, we have Volvo’s as pool cars. So I have been lucky enough to drive many of the current range. The v40 and XC40 are fine a bit of a meh…. Car. The V90 are excellent both in T5 and D5 that much I have decided to buy one as my next when the my come in price a bit more. I would really like a T8. But will settle of D5 or T5.
    The XC90 we have two at work and I can completely agree with you on the build quality and levels of luxury. One D5 what is great, a good work horse, but it’s still only a 4 cylinder and could do with some extra grunt. The other one is a T8, only had the pleasure of driving this for a couple of days. It’s a awesome machine plenty of power as long as there is plenty of charge in the hybrid system. Once that is gone becomes very heavy and under powered. The economy goes out of the window. So you would certainly have to take that into consideration if purchasing one.

    I owned 2018 XC90 for almost a year, but finally had enough. A/C quit twice during the summer, and although it was a CPO car, it was not properly prepped for sale (missing parts and dirty). For the 50K service, normally about $170, I was told it needed new front brakes, as in pads and rotors. The rotors had been replaced at 30K due to a slight pulsation, but no matter. I was told that Volvo's policy was to always replace rotors when pads were needed. No exceptions! Since my driving is largely highway, the service advisor agreed I could be looking at an $800 front brake job as often as every 20K miles. And also a bit odd, Volvo never followed up even once with a satisfaction survey after a dealer service visit. It appears they simply do not care. So, my XC90 is gone. I went back to a more reliable Japanese brand.

    XC90 doesn’t really match the RR if you compare the top spec, or subsequently the base models against each other, but it isn’t likely to be comparable with the difference in price. It’s competition is the X5, Q7, or Touareg. The RR in full spec is a go anywhere vehicle with a S class standard ride. Most people who buy one are hardly concerned with reliability, as it’s gone when, or just before the warranty has expired.

    I like the new XC90 and the S90 and V90. However, i've always seen the XC90 as a cheaper but similar competitor to the Cadillac Escalade, due to the interior, and these days the Navigator (i do not live in the UK). But only with the T8 trim. In any other trim the 2 liter 4 cylinder fails to compete with the GM GDI 6.2 and the Ford 3.5TT, never mind what Mercedes, Audi and Porsche are offering. They are made for tempered speed. They are not in any intent or purpose the 5-6 seater full size sedan/luxury saloon of yesteryear, but they are a reasonable semblance of it, considering that these days, anything that isn't hardcore offroad, has to a sporty roadcar.

    Europcar gave me this car as an upgrade instead of the BMW I actually requested. I didn't like it because it's massive. Anyone who had been to the Hilton's car park in Leeds knows how tight it's. Honestly, I almost had a heart attack just trying to squeeze this giant in.

    11.4 MPG is one bad point. I had the old 2008 model R design with TD5 motor and that only done 23/24 mpg and had no power at 185hp for that size car. Really expensive to run, Scoffed up the front tyres in no time so i sold it after a year. Drive an X5 now and its a much better car.

    I looked at this before going for a new 30D X5 which is cheaper ro run and has reliable technology, this was 4 years ago so maybe things have changed? Comfort is second to none in the Volvo, you do feel that you could drive to the ends of earth and back in comfort. Unfortunately the Volvo technology, running gear, and costs let it down.
