Sam Darnold on the Raiders has zero chance of playing well enough to warrant a 45 million a year salary. Today, he's in the right situation for him but I doubt there are 10 teams in the league he could duplicate this season's level of success on and the Raiders sure as hell is not one of them.
It’s not a terrible business decision for Darnold to take a slight discount to stay in Minnesota. He is still relatively young he can make generational money with Minnesota for 3-5 years and then go test the market and get another 3 years of being highly paid. If he leaves Minnesota and flops he is not getting another big money contract.
$41 million is the cost ro franchise tag Darnold. Saying you wouldn't pay him $4 million more is idiocy. Another way to look at it is they're paying $38 million right now for Darnold and Cousins. So $45 million is only $7 million over what they're paying now. Letting him walk is not an option.
Prisco is full of it today! The Jets were truly a dumpster fire organization during Darnold’s brief tenure. They had a lot of terrible coaching. A lot of good quarterback prospects could have failed under those circumstances.

Darnold was a top 10 pick player as well. Until now, McCarthy is an unknown project and if the right offer comes along, theVikings should not hesitate to trade the latter.
Donald deserves the next big pay!! JJ might be good but based on his college plays hes probably a alex smit or kirk cousin at best! The next QB with an "if" factor will be Phenix Jr!!
I wanted the Vikings to draft Penix Jr and I believe they wanted him too. McCarthy was the backup plan. I don’t think they truly wanted him. I wouldn’t be surprised if they kept Darnold and traded McCarthy for a top 5-10 pick.

Pete Prisco is a moron. The Vikings are not going to trade JJ McCarthy or resign Sam to a massive deal. The whole plan was to have Sam come in for one year and be a bridge QB. The most likely scenario is that Sam gets tag and trade once McCarthy is ready to go. The reserved cap will be spent on upgrading the guard or center position. The Vikings defense personal is not that great especially at the LE, RE and CB position.
Knowing what they have now with Darnold, the Vikes would NOT draft JJM again. If they can get decent trade value, JJM will go. Daniel Jones will take a back up role deal for a year like Sam did this year.
If the vikes sign darnold, there is still no reason to trade away JJ McCarthy. It would be beneficial for Sam Darnold to get another year or two of equity before he goes and makes market value, and the vikings have JJ in the oven right now. No need to overspend if not needing too. If they can sign Darnold for 2 years 30m/y, im all in, and sam is only like 29 years old for another bigger contract or two.. if not, let sam go and get his bag. Pete Prisco is talking himself in circles. So Darnold is a product of circumstance only, but Trevor Lawrence just needs the right situation? I swear the only people to make more than Lawrence off of head and shoulders are Proctor & Gamble and Fabio... Then Prisco tries to make the argument, "what if Darnold wins the Superbowl?" as if that's a bad thing? A lack of self awareness on that level should be studied. The simple fact is that having two QBs you think are talented on the roster is never a bad thing. The myth that you have to throw everything at a rookie QB on a rookie contract is a media creation. If the Vikings can sign Darnold for a decent enough deal that their total price of their QB room is market competitive, then they should do it. If the have confidence in JJ then they should be smart enough to realize that Mahomes, Allen, Jackson and Love all sat behind a solid QB who they later replaced and in no way was the team hurt by it. Somebody put Prisco on an MLB beat or something. Dude has no business talking football.
They paid Jefferson, and Darrisaw. They won’t pay Sam that much. They will have 70+ million in cap space and they wanna roll other players in. They don’t NEED draft picks cuz Kwesi isn’t that great at drafting. Hes better at finding moneyball players that fit the scheme.
Sam will not be able to come close to This level of success on some crappy team like the raiders who has no proven head coach and no wrs like jj, addison. I mean if he cares more about money than winning sure, test the market. But if you want a chance at winning and being known for being a great quarterback in your career then do what it takes to stay in Minnesota for a few years and take a slight pay dip above what you could get elsewhere so that you can win and have more pieces around you
I just think KOC is really good at coaching the QB position. He rolled 4 quarterbacks last year and the team was still in playoff contention until mid-December when the wheels finally fell off.
Why would trade a rookie quarterback contract? Why? The contract is great. You'd have a great backup and starter in waiting for when Darnold gets hurt or seeks free agency after his 2-3 years expires. WHY WOULD TRADE JJ? JJ McCarthy would be the #1 pick in this year’s draft if he waited another year to come out.
