Sam Darnold is a natural talent that never had the benefit of good coaching a skill development till he got to the 49ners. He is growing and blossoming under KOC. He is a better quarterback now than at the beginning of the season. There is still room for growth.
Keep in mind, 2 of the INTs were not catches. And as you noted, KOC calls long-developing plays, which is why there are more sacks. But he's also held on to the ball (and not fumbled) on lots of blind side sacks - its own skill.
Sam Darnold has passed the eye test for me. I would franchise tag him for 2025. I would hold onto JJ McCarthy until I know Sam is a long term solution. This is a great problem to have.
Glad you aren’t the GM. Let’s pay a guy 40 million to “see” if he’s the guy. KOC will coach him up just like Sam. While we pay him 1/4 of what Sam would make.
@maxwilliamson5411 I'm glad you are not the GM. Do you are saying get rid of a guy that is playing at a pro bowl level, for a rookie that hasn't played a single NFL non preseason game in his life. Lol 🤣🤣🤣 you are not a real Vikings fan you are an imposter Packers fan. Lol 🤣😆😆😆
It all depends on what KOC sees behind the scenes w J.J. Even if JJ looks great, I don't know why they wouldn't franchise tag and trade Darnold for two 1st round picks which they would get for a franchise tag player
Not sure I agree with the Vikings probably can’t replicate this next year. Sam will have a full season of experience in the offense ... he is only going to feel more comfortable entering next year. You also have more cap space to improve gaps and depth on an already successful team, if Sam takes a mutually friendly deal. You also get Blackmon and Darrisaw back … and Turner and Brandel now have a season of experience. I’d say chances of next year being as competitive or better is a bit more probable than not.
I don't agree that Darnold has been a gunslinger. A surgeon is a more accurate description. His turnovers haven't been as much forcing into windows as poor throws or miscommunications. Thats not great, but its not YOLO downside. And Matthew absolutely has the correct take on repeatability. I think the guest hasn't processed (watched?) how great Darnold has been.
i think darnold would get even better in a second season under KOC. like Kirk. plus if they can fix o line issues and D line. this team would be stacked
Your guest is using stats like - one score games - game randomness - defense likely to regress - you likely won’t be as good in 2025 As reasons against Sam Darnold , as if everyone of these things aren’t true for every QB and every team in the entire NFL. The KOC offense is a sack producer. It is similar to McVay, Taylor, and the guy in Houston. Their QB's take a higher number of hits than most teams. Other styles of offense protect their QB better. Stafford gets hammered every game. Burrow takes more hits than any QB. KOC's offense requires longer developing routes. Many times there is no hot route built in. If the opponents blitz on the plays without a built in hot route, Darnold is in trouble.
The big question about Sam Darnold this year is "is this year a fluke". But that is the wrong question for the Vikings. The question SHOULD be "what are the CHANCES that JJ McCarthy is the real deal" . For every highly drafted QB that succeeds, several more fail and although I have GREAT FAITH in KOC, the sad reality is that more first round QBs fail than succeed. Vikes have in Darnold a QB they have shown they can win with, I don't see how they pass up the chance to keep him next year and beyond. This team is built to win NOW, not a time to turn to a QB getting his first pro starts next season.
We can franchise tag him and give him a two year contract for 37-45 million per year and still do enough to improve our team to the next level I believe. It is not like we are broke.
KOC system is a down field first passing attack. Those plays take longer to develop. Mostly 5 and 7 step drops. You would expect therefore to have a high sack rate.
How many teams in the NFL finish 3-0 @Sea, GB, @DET with everything on the line ??? Buffalo ?? Baltimore?? Maybe KC ??? Maybe nobody ??? I bet the odds for any those teams to go 3-0 against that schedule is +300 tops.
Find a way to get some compensation for Sam, move onto JJ. Unless you find a guy who is top 3-4, you want cheap bridge guys or rookie-scale guys with potential (McCarthy). My belief is KOC will get the most out of whoever is behind center. Gives me all the confidence i need to move onto JJ
@laredolassoo he's not better than Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow in any way, shape or form. I'd put Herbert, Love and Stafford ahead as well. So no, you don't give this guy top money (which he will get offered). You move onto the kid or kid+bridge like Jones.

@MINNESOTA_PTSD he's been really good once he hit rock bottom against Jacksonville after a string of bad games. That said, give me the kid and $60M in cap to get 4-6 impact players and a strong cap flexibility future over far less flexibility and Darnold at market rate (likely into the high 40s to low $50M a year now).
@@punisher5598 you can trust him all you want but this decision might be made primarily because of money/cap reasons, and not because they think JJ is 100% ready to handle this offense.
This has been such a fun season to watch, I just want to enjoy the ride. Any decision about Darnold can wait until the offseason.

Sam deserves to get paid . I just don’t see the Vikings going back into cap oblivion especially with all the dead cap they’re eating as we speak.
