    If i had a nest with a cuckoo egg, id take the cuckoo out and hand raise it so the other bird babies could still live and the cuckoo still lives too. Its a win win, and when the cuckoo is grown it would just be a pet so it doesn’t deposit its own eggs in anyone else’s nests.
    Would also be interesting to see a nest with all cuckoo babies and see them fight to kick each other out lol.

      Yeah it's pretty interesting. Basically the young chicks that did this were more successful so they passed on their genes. That's a part of natural selection. It's a way to explain why something is the way that it is, not necessarily that it's a good or bad thing it just is.

      It depends on the area. In some places, brood parasites are invasive species and they’re damaging to local ecosystems. Maybe there’s a case for hunting them then. In other places, they’re just part of the natural order of things. You say brood parasitism is new, but you gotta put that into perspective. Aristotle wrote about cuckoos killing their host’s offspring. “New” still means thousands of years old. There are lots of species and individual birds that are more than capable of rejecting the eggs of brood parasites. Cuckoos have built up a tolerance for the toxins and spines of caterpillars that can kill other birds and function as pests on crops and trees. For example, in New England, the North American cuckoo is one of the only things that can eat gypsy moth caterpillars (an invasive species that devastates native flora). And most cuckoos are actually really important for controlling moth populations.

      @elijahculper5522 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They do sometimes make their own nests. But the nests don’t tend to be very good. Some species of cuckoos only sometimes engage in brood parasitism, and others always make their own nests. In both cases, the nests have a tendency to be flimsy. They’re easily dislodged from trees or collapsed under the weight of their inhabitants. Cuckoos just aren’t great builders. They also have to contend with the fact that male cuckoos are deadbeats. Unlike a lot of other songbirds, cuckoos don’t stick with one partner for an entire season and males aren’t interested in being active parents. That means a female cuckoo has to find all of the food to feed her young and can’t spend much time protecting her nest. Also, most cuckoos are migratory. A few months after fledging, they’ll have to fly thousands of miles. Cuckoo migratory patterns are grueling. They often include long stints over terrains that don’t provide them with opportunities to feed-the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, or open ocean in the South Pacific. They need a ton of food to build up muscle mass and fat reserves before that journey in order to survive. And one way they manage that is by killing off broodmates and convincing other birds to feed them. The species that have the most difficult migratory patterns tend to also be the ones who rely more heavily on brood parasitism.
      None of that is to say that chicks raised in a nest built by a single mother cuckoo are doomed. There’s ample evidence of such birds surviving their first winter. But they have a much better chance of survival if they take over the nest of another bird, so that’s what most of them do if they can. And that’s the trait that natural selection has pushed for thousands of years.

      Most bird species the young leave the nest but will still be taken care of by the parents for another month or two. In that time the parents basically show them how to get their own food and survive outside the nest. The family may split up around when it's time to migrate although many birds will still come back to the same areas so the birds nesting in the area next season might actually be some of the offspring.

    I recall a website or video somewhere on the internet that sometimes the cuckoo picks a nest where the egg doesn't get pushed out but the chicks are as big as cuckoo chicks and hatch at the same time so if the cuckoo happens to lay an egg in the species of bird that lays in that nest, it's just an extra mouth to feed, and is no big deal to the parents of that species. They might also make nests that the cuckoo can't push the eggs out of, so what happens is that mom notices an extra mouth to feed and is extra busy feeding it.

      Experience parents mark the eggs, put it in different patterns. So when we see intruder egg they simply through it out. Also timing is very important , Cuckoo birds need to synch up with close by eggs with in nest otherwise, their chicks will not hatch before theirs . ..

      It’s not uncommon for brood parasites’ eggs (like cuckoos and cowbirds) to get ejected from the nest. Parents that have raised brood parasites in the past are particularly capable of distinguishing their eggs from those of other birds and not repeating their mistakes. Most brood parasites eggs have actually developed thicker shells to protect the egg from getting destroyed by a parent that realizes what is happening.
      A cuckoo chick is able to chirp really fast at a bunch of different pitches simultaneously. Basically one cuckoo chick makes the sound of a whole nest of chicks. And that triggers an instinctual response in the parents to feed it. I think a decent analog in humans is how a breastfeeding mother will lactate if she hears a baby cry, even if it’s not her baby and she doesn’t actually want to lactate at that particular moment. Birds can’t lactate, but the do get a rush of hormones when they hear a nest of chicks that spurs a maternal response.
