Love the video man and definitely subbing. When it comes to Christianity in the Roman Empire I feel as a lot of people only look at it from the Wes POV because in the east Christianity was a diplomatic advantage. You’ll find that east Rome was able to leverage their religion when it came to nearby kingdoms in the near east and the caucuses. Kinda goes to show the west really wasn’t doing so hot vs the East.
I never managed to learn about Rome and it's empire because it never caught my interest, but this video really kept me hooked, really good I've subbed.

Bro just explained how this humble but weird it is Remember me when you get popular brother you deserve a lot for your hardwork just like oversimplifed My history teacher can't explain it but you did
actually the romans did saw the barbarians as threats (that's why they called them barbarians, wich in the greek origin of the Word means you're a outsider, and also they viewed them the same as the persians. The problem was that Rome was too large, there was finance problems and an army that couldn't hold back more invasions, so the goverment of Rome thought it would be a good idea to make the barbarians cross the border and make deals with them (farm labor and military causes). But at the same time, they saw them as inferior and treated them like that, so for example, the alliance between the visigoths and Rome fall because Rome refuses to pay them the military payment, and also there was a lot of antibarbarians politicians in the Senate. that's something to consider when talking about the Germanic tribes. Also, on a more historical term, the Huns were not the ones that pushed the barbarians to the frontiers, the barbarian tribes were migrating to Rome from about the I century AD, but things started to go downhill with the acumulation of problems that the state couldn't bare with. A lot of this problems has to do with social chaos, economic problems and political inestability (wich you mentioned).

Whoa brother. Caesar’s army declared him imperator and it’s closer to “great general” than dictator. Also he’s so famous because of his legacy not his “short chapter”. The tarn czar and Kaiser were used up until 100 years ago. Dude was still a genocidal maniac though.
Corruption and religious discourse. Wonder where I’ve heard of that? Reminds me of the saying “those who know history are doomed to watch others repeat it”
Rome and the Byzantine Empire are one and the same, so not to be too ackchyually the Roman Empire didn't fall until about a thousand years after the Huns. So the topic should be about another invader, the Ottoman Turks. Then there is nuance when the Western Roman Empire fell. There were nations that took over Italy that had the same form of governorship, even given more power to the senate and even seen themselves as successor states. So it kind of goes back to the ship of Theseus paradox, except it's just replacing the captain instead of parts of the ship. Also back then the idea of a nation state is murky, it's a 17th to 19th century concept.
The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Cedric Gibbon pretty much spells it out. One of the greatest Emperors of the Roman Empire Marcus Aurelius spoiled his son Commudus and that was the beginning of the end. As great as Marcus Aurelius was his HUGE and fatal mistake was in leaving his son to succeed him. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE mistake which in my opinion definitely takes the luster off his reign. Someone at that time and with that power has to LOVE his country more than his own family. If he had followed that adage "for the greater good" and left The Roman Empire probably would have survived a LOT longer than it did.
For point 2, I’m not sure how relevant Christianity was in Rome’s fall or decline. It was officially the religion of the empire 150 years before the fall of the west. That is a very long time.
It's more that the rise of Christianity was a symptom of how Romans had literally lost faith in the traditional system, since Roman religion was deeply intertwined with the state.
@@erraticonteuse I mean, maybe? But it’s so easy to compress these massive lengths of time in our mind. I mean, if we say 20 years is a generation, then it took 7 and a half generations after the adoption of Christianity to cause the collapse. That’s almost exactly the same span of time from today to the US victory in the civil war. If America collapsed tomorrow, would future historians then claim the fall was due to the abolishment of slavery?
Although some of this is accurate, it doesn't really address the main reason Rome fell. Rome fell mainly due to one factor alone - too much immigration. Despite claims to the contrary, Rome was accepting massive numbers of immigrants and doing so with little care or discernment. Those in power were emboldened to loosen restrictions on immigration for cheap labor and especially more soldiers. People of different religions and cultures mass migrated to rome, as it had jobs and even social programs for the poor. Many military aged immigrants would join the roman army for the pay, however it became clear they had no allegiance to Rome and would be the first to abandon or doublecross their own ranks with enemy bribes. Some of Rome's enemies would send men as immigrants to infiltrate their army to leak information. Rome allowed religious freedom, however many pagans in Rome were upset Christians were in charge and wanted it to be ruled by what they considered the correct ruling faith / Gods. Many immigrants would become resentful of of Rome and want it's gov't, traditions and customs to be more like their homeland. Some were angry women were allowed to speak to men without permission, some believed the practice of Christianity in their proximity was an afront to their gods, there was plenty of reasons certain immigrant groups became disillusioned with the empire they immigrated to. The barbarian tribes were not banned from serving in the army like you claim, except towards the very end for good reason when they were actively sabotaging Rome. The massive immigration allowed areas of Rome to become ethnic/cultural pockets whom could congregate with each other and commiserate about how Rome should be run, in a feedback loop causing more and more resentment of the Roman people, govt, and Christianity. It wasn't long before pagan groups were plotting to take over Rome. When Barbarians invaded it was immigrants within their own armies and a lack of social cohesion accross the empire that caused it to collapse. Rome is an example of how reckless mass immigration and forced proximinity of incompatible cultures without any social contract agreements can erode the strongest of empires. It's not too dissimilar to what is happening in America, Britain, Canada, or other places that have been removing immigration safeguards for the political and financial benefit of the few. Rome was an empire filled with people who hated it, hated it's culture, and were there solely to exploit it for whatever benefits they could get. Many in the Roman army jumped at the opportunity to become traitors and help invading forces for religious / cultural / ethnic reasons. The hatred against Christians and between religions caused tension in cities and social cohesion fell apart. It was only a matter of time.
9:01 I took a Roman Civ class in college and their conclusion was Christianity was ultimately THE fall of Rome. So, I think you're on to something there.
Roman polytheism was already struggling before Christianity spread far, with the Imperial cult 'worshipping' the emperors and many sects and cults popping up; it has been said that essentially, Christianity gave people a rejuvenated shared identity that older faiths didn't provide. Also, the church didn't immediately gain power in the way often imagined; the power largely still lied with the emperors for a good while, and papal power slowly grew over the course of the early medieval period in which they were often bossed around by the HRE.
Good video, but Odoacer did not invaded Rome in 476. Because he was a Foederati, basically a barbarian officer in Romes Service. He ruled Italy, maintaining its culture and religion (despite being a heretic and a German) Even with the support of Senate. After the Ostrogoths invaded Italy, deposed Odoacer, they still maintained the Romaness of Italy. The Ostrogothic king, Theodoric the Great, sent a letter to Emperor Anastasius (Eastern ROMAN Emperor) which he wrote “Our royalty is an imitation of yours,’ he writes, ‘modelled on your good purpose, a copy of the only Empire; and insofar as we follow you do we excel all other nations.”
