    Black Tiger, known in Japan as Black Dragon (Japanese: ブラックドラゴン Hepburn: Burakku Doragon?), is a 1987 platform game released for the arcades by Capcom.
    A barbarian hero jumps and fights his way through a variety of colourful, enemy-packed levels in this spiritual successor to the Capcom classic Ghosts 'n Goblins. The sprawling, eight-way scrolling, two-dimensional levels are packed with hidden bonuses to encourage and reward exploration. Most of these bonuses are in the form of 'Zenny coins'; currency that allows the player to buy such items as an upgrade to their weapons and armour, keys for treasure chests, and anti-poisoning potions. Special items that reveal coins, upgraded armour, full vitality, extra lives, extra time, or simply bonus points may be found by attacking certain walls.
    The Japanese version has a few changes that makes it more challenging than its American counterpart. Several of the "falling rock" obstacles were added in this version. Additionally, the prices of many of the items are higher. But perhaps the biggest difference is related to fighting the later bosses (the 3 dragons and the dual sword-wielding foes at the end of stages 5 and 7). In the American version, it is possible to duck and avoid taking damage when the bosses touch the player's character as long as one of their projectiles does not hit him. In the Japanese version, the player is not able to do this.

    It's always amusing how the composers for the c64 rarely if ever stuck to the theme of the source material. Sometimes it was so different that it sounded like it was made for an entirely different game and just slapped on.

    Same here, I could finish the entire game on a single life. And this on Black Dragon, the Japanese version after the café owner had the dip switches set to hard because I was taking away his business :) Still enjoying playing this on MAME but I need arcade joysticks! (Rygar was my other fave)

    I didn't know this game was on the Capcom Classics Collection II. Doesn't look to be that spectacular so maybe that's why I never noticed it. It's hard to believe that you can still lose a fight with your guy having such mad skills to be able to throw almost 10 knives and whip a gigantic morning star all at the same time. Only with Capcom is this possible.

    I had completely forgotten about this game. Also had no idea it had been ported to any system. Thanks for the "heads up" by making this vid. Definitely a cool game and the Atari ST and Amiga ports are amazing. I'm shocked the Speccy was able to do one for a game like this at all.
    Will be putting a copy of this on a floppy and giving it a spin on my ST today.

    I finished this game with 1CC... in 1990, then I was ten years old, many folks in my block used to finish this game, because we memorized all the levels (secrets lives and traps) People used to watch others playing a lot, so we had to wait a lot, you know turns! now I can't beat it with 1CC 🤣🤣🤣

    This a perfect example of the "Home ports must be inferior to the arcade version" rule in action. Even when given hardware that is equal or possibly even superior to what the original machine ran on, companies always make the home port inferior to the arcade machine. Maybe it's not true any more, but it certainly was back in the 80s and even the 90s.
    There's no valid reason that the Amiga couldn't have handled an arcade-perfect port.

    The C64-version is actually a multi-sid game. It sounds amazing and is just as playable as the arcade.
    I do agree though that the Commodore color-palette is a bit to limited to do the Black Dragon justice.
    However, it is my favourite version out of the ones I´ve played (Amiga, C64, Arcade)
    I guess I´m not in the majority there, but I´m a sucker for SID´s so...

    Amongst the home ports, the C64 version is the most smooth and playable.
    Amiga and ST are graphically impressive (the palette choice is even better than the arcade), but the very low frame-rate ruins the gameplay.

      That's true, it's the only version that have a decent framerate and good playability. But their graphics was underated for this machine. It's more capable than that, between all this bad ports of the game, it's the less bad.

    Sadly the amiga version wasn't optimized at all for this platform, they just made a fast port from the atari st! It's a shame.
    But they were happy enough with the result... But if they really used amiga blitter etc.. blacktiger animation should have been smooth but they were lazy or they hadn't enough time left by the publisher ?????

    The amiga version is the ST version with I/O changed (display routine, joystick control, etc). Uncomprehensible that the coder used the arcade level data, and locked the game as 16 colors on amiga with NO custom chip use at all ! Everything is done in software (how retarded !), that's the main reason about the slugginess. there are amiga games using more sprite frames and more colors than on this game. Totally shameless, and the worst is that the coder was certainly not a crap programmer, far from that. He just took the ST way, which was as wrong as possible for coin-op conversions.
    He should had also changed one thing on the computer port : instead of having the whole level in RAM, which means that you lose colors in number in order to support all parts, he should have put in RAM only the part where the player was actually in, with multiloading. Oh well, it's too late now.

    • @user-iz6ki3hi5k
      @user-iz6ki3hi5k 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's a case of shitty port atari->amiga (and the atari verson isn't a blockbuster, the atari can do it better). In fact seems as the amiga version is a very little slower than the Atari one (that isn't fast). No OCS at all, nothing of using the blitter, nothing of using the special sound capabities of AMIGA.
      That's amusing that someone was paided for making this port.

    • @dlfrsilver
      @dlfrsilver 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically, the Amiga is running the ST code with no enhancements at all. I did a code compare, it's 85% the same as the ST code. So yep, the Amiga is not used at all, the colors are just awfull (those arcade games can't be made in 16 colors and be ok). You need at least 32 if not 64 colors to make the game look ok (the original use 256 colors !)

    The spetrum was decent for its lilations but the Amstread version looks CRAPPY for a better system. Decent music on the C-64 but the tiny graphics dont work well. The Amiga looks Boss as always but wheres the music?? NO the PS2 version was the best.as it was a faithful port.

    rank:
    1° Arcade
    2° Amiga (a little less slow than atari)
    3° Atari ST (too slow)
    4° Commodore 64 (too tiny objects and bad graphics)
    5° Amstrad CPC (same as the spectrum but this at least have music)
    6° Zx Spectrum (very awful)

    Poor conversion all round. The Amiga version is just a straight ST port which insults the hardware, the Amstrad and Spectrum versions don't look at all playable, and the C64 version is visually dull with a very short looping tune. Very lazy, rushed ports.
