Freeway Chaos: Box Truck Wipeout

  • Box Truck Wipe Out on the Freeway - While not a rollover, this box truck accident was a very delicate job. The lift gate in the rear was already bent on the driver side, so lifting up from the front only could damage it even further. Shutting down lanes was not an option either, which is why we worked it 100% in the shoulder.
Final game plan was to have myself in Hulk, my 2020 50ton rotator, boom all the way out from the dirt area to lift the front of the truck. My dad assisted me by putting his 2022 60ton rotator next to mine, to get a vertical lift on the rear of the truck. This part was a little tricky, because we did not want the truck to swing into the freeway once airborne. That's why my dad positioned his boom quite a few feet offset from the rear, to act as a catch.
As you'll see, that was a genius plan! The truck must have been caught worse than we thought because once it broke free, it recoiled quite a bit. Still, with the way we had the trucks rigged, there was no real danger. My dad then boomed out to plant the rear on level ground, and his part was done. From there, Enrqiue took his place in our 50ton wrecker, and I used Hulk to swing it from the top of the hill to directly on his underlift.

Knowing what you're doing and having the best equipment and rigging makes nightmare jobs like this look easy. Knowing what you're doing is always key though. I like how the rear axle was re-positioned so it could be front towed. Cool job.
