This is a great documentary . It gives chickens , hens and roosters a place into our hearts . Some people see animals as unintelligent beings . It's just too sad that they live to become someone's meal all over the world . Let's thank Almighty God for such privilege . Great documentary !

I use to want a dog, but instead my family got chickens. Tbh I love my chickens just like someone who loves their dog. Chickens are so smart, funky, soft, funny, and just so flipping cute. (Each of 12 my chickens have unique personalities)

I named my first white chicken Liza like in that story. She's not a silky like in the story, she's an Araucana-Ameraucana ~aka~ Easter Egger. They lay large green shelled eggs

I agree, there is nothing like fresh free range eggs! I don't sell my eggs, instead I give mine to elderly, needy and handicap people/ families and some to friends. Everyone tells me they have the best flavor and texture. I too give mine layer feed. The calcium in the layer feed is crushed oyster shell which helps to keep the egg shells from becoming too thin. I have a big garden which the chickens often eat from. Even though I don't butcher them, I always joke with the nieces and nephews that when they're eating the veggies I'm pre-seasoning them...lol

@tatyana4290 - Hello Tatyana. If you're talking about (CC) Close Caption I've been trying to figure out how to set this video to do that. When I click (CC) on this video it says “Subtitles/close captions unavailable”
However, I did try to set the language to see if that will add the (CC) as a couple videos I watched, suggest this would give the video (CC). Saying that, it says it will take time for (CC) to work..... I guess we'll see if it works!
I believe the original video “The Natural History of Chickens” aired as an independent film documentary produced by Mark Lewis and was shown on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) in USA in or around year 2000
If anyone can help in activating the CC feature, that would be great!
Here is a link to PBS's page on this documentary film so you at least have that info

Word of advice if you see a hawk circling your chickens areas yiu can step outside and this will usually stop any bird of prey from attempting to land itself to hunt, you can also dress your chickens areas with items that are proven to keep birds of prey from attacking your chickens living areas..but never just sit at a window and watch a hawk land and kill off your pets be it chickens or bunnies or raising sheep and more protect them with a pellet rifle,I’ve even scene a few farmers build cages with roofs that won’t allow any bird of prey or hunting animals to get inside this area on the outer cage you can have two dogs that are constantly circling this space

    • @CJsWorld101
      @CJsWorld101  ปีที่แล้ว

Unfortunately non of your advice works except to totally enclose the chicken run with either a roof or fence over the top of the fenced in run.
I've had hawks land at my head level inches from me!
In fact, a couple years ago my sister was visiting and helping me change the water in the chickens run. Her hair was in a bun and when she bent over to clean the water bowl, a hawk swooped down and tried to grab her hair, thinking it was a chicken!
Over the years I've tried about everything to deter hawks such as hanging CD's and pie pans, mounting artificial owls around the area and even had my dogs next to the coop / chicken run area. Nothing worked!
Also, it is a federal crime to harass or shoot any bird including hawks as they are all federally protected. That is why there is a hinting season for some birds and you need a hunting license with specific bird stamps for those birds in season. Trust me on this. I contacted DNR a couple years ago when the hawks were real bad that summer. I was told I'm not even allowed to yell at them or shew them with hand gestures much less light off firecrackers to scare them away or as you suggested, shoot with a pellet gun

I was like "oh that's cool" until he said "Japanese". Good grief, he made himself look so ignorant with just that one mistake.

the major problem that that guy did was having the roosters separate roosters usally mellow out once a pecking order is established and especially when there is no hens and usually only the dominate rooster crows spiting them up forces the roosters to enter a "echo camber" none of their beefs can be settled they in the end try to out crow their rivals louder and louder until theoretically they settle it with a fight but they can't because they are tied up to their pens with a short leach

I went to a real family farm once when I was 16 down in Central Florida. A girl chicken began to follow me around. I picked her up for the farm tour and I think she wanted me to go home with me. I nearly cried setting her down. If I ever live in the country I'll have a pet one. It probably won't be as spoiled as mr. Cotton. LOL I am glad she didn't feed him any chicken nuggets. I bet he liked French fries though.

Mandy I hope you have a chance to have chickens of your own someday, I'd be lost without my chickens! I think of my chickens as my children and most have a name and know when I'm calling him or her. What amazes me to this day is their maternal instinct especially the bantam's (small chicken breeds) and how intelligent they are. And btw.... the more you spend time with them, the tamer they get. I have a couple chickens that will fly across the yard when they see me and land on my shoulder! Others are naturally nervous but will usually let you hold them, at least for a little bit, after you catch them and let them know everything is ok :)

thanks for that upload by the way. I loved that show when it was on. and thanks for the sweet message. Mostly only mean trolls answer me back. LOL...the last few years I've gone nearly completely vega from my love of animals I think. I guess Cotton's probably in chick chick chick heaven by now. I hope she got another one. That area sure is pretty. I always cry like a baby during the Liza's sacrifice story.

The story of Liza is the main reason I got chickens! Her story reminded me of what I had seen as a kid. And btw I'm not like what many people seem to be now days. I was raised to have respect of others and give to people in need which I still do with eggs and veggies I grow! As for youtube, I'm not on a lot but I try to reply to or like posts I feel are genuine when I get a chance to check my channel.
I'm sure I've mentioned it before but when I originally watched this documentary it took me back to when I was a kid. My grandma on dads side and great grandma and great aunt on moms side had chickens. I always loved hanging out with them and when it came time to butcher, us kids had the task of catching them. So when I'd get called on to catch one, I'd purposely try to chase them away...lol
In my teens seeing I loved animals so much, I took care of my neighbors petting farm. They had anything from chickens and goats to arctic fox's, prairie dogs, lama's, horses, skunks, mink and even several types of monkeys and many other animals! I started out working for free just so I could be around, get to know and study all the animals and their habits.
About 8 years ago is when I first got my chickens which was a couple years after I saw the documentary for the first time and didn't realize just how many breeds there were and had never heard of bantam's or silkies. ( btw... Liza was a Silky bantam) Anyway, my first flock was a mix of Araucana (Easter Eggers), Plymouth Rock, Buff Orpington and ISA chicks, pretty much a mix of what Rural King had for sale...lol I had one Araucana that was white and named her Liza after Liza from the documentary. Btw, my Liza is still going as well as some of my originals! How long do they live? I'm not sure but guess I'll find out.
It wasn't until I went to an animal auction that I first saw (and purchased) my first banty's and silkies! I wish I could post pics here on youtube but you can see many of them and my newer chickens in my videos. That reminds me, I haven't posted a vid in a while but may do one this spring or summer if I get time! ~ CJ @@mandysimmons2769

Mandy btw... I made a quick vid this evening as it started to snow here in southern IN if you care to watch. There is a white chicken in it but it's not Liza. Liza was already in the coop's rafters which is where they roost every night. I tried to squeeze my camera up there to get a shot of her but couldn't see from where I was standing.... lol Here's a link to the vid ....... ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍ th-cam.com/video/KxcNVbek6Dg/w-d-xo.html
