      My dad swore by sheep manure. I haven't used any of that as sheep aren't raised in my area really. I really like using bunny poo since it can go directly and doesn't burn the plants.

    We had the best garden ever by adding horse manure in the fall. It was amazing. There is a big difference between cow manure and horse manure

      Horse manuer creates more loft because its more fibrous. But of you're talking horse barn cleanings, the urine and any type of alphalfa does wonders for getting the composting action going.

    • @annsmith8343
      @annsmith8343 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      Our neighbor has horses. He puts it in cubicles (mini stalls) and has pipes running through it with hot water to kill the weed seeds. Then piles it up for the neighbors to use freely. It is wonderful black gold!

      @@annsmith8343 We used to be able to get barn cleanings from a stable where the horses either didn't have access to weeds or, they were eaten down quick enough there wasn't much for weed seeds. If y0u got it fresh, sometime it would grow alphslfa which wasn't too bad IF you got it pulled early. They were wood shaving, not cedar so I would guess pine, based and let me tell you with the right mix of other stuff those shavings broke down quite a bit pretty quick in the dirt, on the dirt, or in a pile.

    Suggestion: Your raised beds will lose about 1/3 of their mass over the year, requiring that more compost be added. Buy that amount of new compost NOW, giving it time to break down and mature.

  • @just_ducky_acres7561
    @just_ducky_acres7561 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    As you found out you can't just dump new compost into beds and expect a lush green garden. You need to make sure you have a good amount of worms living in each bed. If not, dig some from other gardens and add them to the bed. Add amendments a couple of months before growing. That being said, you are also still leaving out the most important thing. You should be adding a thick topping of leaf mulch to each bed for the winter. Come spring you'll find some wonderful worm castings with rich fertile soil.

      When I was young and single, on most nights I would start a fire in the BBQ pit and then water my garden, eating what was ripe along the way. By that time the wood would be down to coals and I'd toss a piece of meat on the grill. Great times. My neighbors got a kick out of what they called my "grazing".

    I had the same problem 2 years ago with compost from the same company-good company but compost needed a boost. This last fall I planted half my raised beds with cover crops. I covered them with weed fabric early in the spring to kill cover crops. Then I planted transplants through the dead material. I can't believe the difference that made.

    We grow in compost in our raised beds and never have failure to thrive problems. But we fertilize every plant with high nitrogen OMRI approved fertilizer when we put the starts in the ground. Then every 3-4 weeks we top dress until mid summer before fruiting we chsnge to low nitrogen higher phosphorus and potash. This works with tomatoes and peppers. Root veggies get balanced fertilizer every month.
    Also, we used 50/50 mix top soil and compost on the bottom layer when we filled the beds with 100% compost on top 8 inches. We add 1-2 inches fresh compost every year. I add plenty of worm casting to my mix of Plant Tone and Tomato Tone brand fertilizers which have 8% calcium, micro nutrients and biology built in.

    Rabbit manure has made a huge difference in our plants this year. We have raised beds as well and I really notice a difference. The plants are fuller and greener. We are struggling with getting the pH to go up in our raspberry beds. I just worked sulphur pellets into the beds a few weeks ago so hopeufully this will help. I had not realized when I became a gardner that I was also going to have to be a chemist, LOL. It’s the microbes in your soil that make things plant available. They probably went dormant when the compost dried out over the winter. I would foliar feed with the synthetic fertilizer for now and try to increase the microbes in the soil. Aerated compost tea with fish emulsion and Jadam microbe soulution. I also throw every worm I find into my raised beds in the first couple years.

    Your plants in the greenhouse are phenomenal!! Also, I'm si glad you figured out what the raised bed plants needed. They look great too! You both definitely have green thumbs. 😊 Much love to your family. 🥰

    I also filled my raised beds in the fall 2023 with 100% compost so I was particularly interested in this topic. After a terrible cool season spring planting I pulled all the plants and added peat moss and more fertilizer. Summer veggies are doing better. I use Agrothrive fertilizer. Smell isn't as strong as plain fish emulsion and it comes in NPK 3-3-5 and 3-3-2. Right now I am also adding a little bit of 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer. Best wishes on your garden and harvest. Thanks for sharing!!!

    It's always scary when you have a garden starting and have issues.

    My raised beds took about 4 years, with organic compost, to finally flourish. Same thing you are experiencing. The soil on its own got better, with a little whatever manure to amend with. So glad your garden is much better! ❤

    Hi Kevin & Sarah your garden and greenhouse are looking amazing. With your garden beds I have got similar to you in Australia, and over our hot summers here in Queensland they tend to dry out very quickly. I mulch my beds with lucerne mulch in summer to hold the moisture in, it also breaks down into the soil.

    No doubt you guys would figure it out. Nice harvest of beans and zucs. I've picked 8 zucs already myself and 2 harvest of peas and one harvest of greenbeans. Lots of lettuce . First year for onions for me as well and they are almost baseball size. I'm so impressed with our gardens. I think I've found my life's passion. I've learned so much from you two. I'm going to get me a drip system next year. Anyways, another awesome video, thanks for letting us tag along with you guys. God bless!!!

    Yay! I really wasn’t sure what to do with my raised beds, and what I ended up doing was mixed the following into the soil under each tomato and pepper plant was:
    About 1/2 cup Neem husk powder, 1/4 cup of my homemade bone meal, and about 1/4 cup crushed egg shells.
    My plants seem to be doing well, so they must like it. (WHEW!)

    Yes. I agree. Beans picked young have a natural sweetness.
