Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Weed fabric never works for us. Weeds grow though it and it's almost impossible to get rid of those weeds because the roots get entangled with the fabric. We cover areas with thick card board instead. The card board eventually rots at which point we replace it. It costs nothing and is very effective.

I have pretty good luck with the weed fabric AS LONG AS I don't spill soil onto it. In my early days, I used to weed and leave the weeds on the cloth...which would break down into soil and then things would grow. When someone pointed that out to me, I couldn't believe that I hadn't figured it out. Cardboard is my go-to now. I save it all winter long, and then in the spring, it comes in handy in so many places.

    Good morning 🙏😊
The chickens will do an amazing job with your compost! Last spring our chickens “found” our garden area that we had put compost in and within a few days they had it spread around and as fine as we could have got it. And it was the best garden we ever had! Our problem then was keeping them out of the garden once it was planted! lol. (We have made them a contained area now so that won’t be a problem this year ).
I love your videos ! And thank you again for sharing
    Have a blessed week 🙏

Your silkie crowing in the background makes me smile. 🐓The chickens will make short work of your compost piles, so if you continue to have lots of stuff to put into the pile, you may want to start a second one to help keep them entertained and out of your raised beds. The flock working the piles makes composting much more efficient. I couldn't imagine keeping chickens and not having a compost pile or two. Thanks for another great video, Sarah and Kevin! 💖

02:45 Beautiful sky in the background! I think this new compost area + the chickens is going to work like a charm. I would clean up the old compost area a little better so the chickens aren't still attracted to it so much. Although that exposed ground will be a source of bugs for a while. Kevin and Sarah. I like the size of your new compost pile. It does need some green organic material as well, as time goes by. The chickens will do a good job of picking unwanted weed seeds out of the pile, and the temperature will sterilize what is left. Composted chicken manure will be useful as well as the chickens pick around the pile.
My grandpa was doing organic farming since before I was born. I’m 68 now, and I was turning compost piles and gardening since I was little. Now, I see just about everyone who gardens and farms, recycling waste materials back into the soil.

Speaking of compost, I think it would be an advantage to you if you put 6-8 inches of wood chips in your chicken houses. The wood chips would obsorb the chicken manure and keep down the odor and would generate some heat during the winter cold weather and would give the chickens something to scratch in. Clean it out once a year and dump it in the compost pile. Utility companies are looking for a place to dump their wood chips.

We have four 4 foot by 4 foot by four foot tall compost bins and our hens have no problem jumping in and turning it. We also compost in there run area with bags of leaves, wood chips and kitchen scraps. We make enough compost to fill all our veggie gardens and buckets for planting. In the fall we add chicken, quail , duckand rabbit poo as well as bedding to all the veggie gardens and let it sit through the winter. It's amazing how well the veggie gardens do for us. Been doing this for over 30 years and we have a good foot or more of beautiful soil to plant in. When we first start our compost heaps we put lots of wet soaked cardboard at the bottom with sticks, logs or what ever we have and then build it up. The girls love it. All of our heaps and garden beds are loaded with red wiggler worms that the girls love it. We also get truck loads of free wood chips ever year to add to all the runs, composts as well as all the walkways.

I did leave a "redneck raised bed" in the new coop and the chickens routinely turn over that soil. I may put one of the kiddie pools in there and add the pine shavings from under their roost and in the run. That could speed up the process before they go into a "formal" pile!

This is a WONDERFUL idea. We have Johnson grass. It has grown up through 2 of my compost piles and taken over. The only way to kill it is to cover it and leave it, and I mean LEAVE it. Years ago, local farmers got it to feed cows, and make hay..what they didn't know, or care about is that the seeds travel, and then that patch shares, and then that patch shares. Now, it's 10 miles away and still spreading. It has made it to my garden area, and I had good compost, but it evaporated the compost, and now is SUPER Johnson, grass. Today, we are having to put down weed fabric hoping it will eventually stop the spread of that EEE-Vile grass. 😆

Now if we could only find a way to eradicate it - we put down garden fabric and made a big garden, But where the asparagus is - taken over by johnson grass . . . gets no capitalization that evil stuff - I am going to have to dig up the asparagus and hope it grows in raised beds. But we had 20 raised beds in KY and when we took up the fabric years later you could see that evil stuff going under the weed barrier all the way across and up on the other side of the fabric - - - it is insanely evil. Nothing worse!!!

You guys always take a situation and make it better. The chickens look super happy. Having them do double duty on the homestead is such a great idea. Free (ish) labor! I know you still have to feed and clean their area, but, they provide food in 2 ways, plus make that compost 100% better for you! It's a win win situation.

  • @cekfraun
    @cekfraun 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That's a great idea for your compost pile! It reminds me of Billy at Perma Pastures Farm. He and his wife and son make compost quickly by making a circular fence of chicken wire about two feet tall and six or eight feet in diameter, putting soiled animal bedding and other compostables in there, and then putting their chickens' feed on top of the pile, which trains them to eat and scratch around in there. They enclose the whole thing inside of their chickens' electric netting enclosure and call it a "chicken tractor on steroids." 😀And I bet you won't need to leave the front open now that the chickens know where to go. If they can jump up onto your raised beds, they can jump in and out of that front part of your compost area.

Ben Hollar from Hollar Homestead does something similar using his chickens to help make compost. He puts a large round wire pen in the center of the chicken yard, fills it with shavings, spent hay, dead leaves, garden waste, grass clippings, etc. The chickens pick through and spread it around for the first stage of breaking it down. After some time goes by, he removes it from the ring and puts it in the corner of the yard, where the chickens continue to work through it. After another bit of time goes by, he removes it from their yard and puts it in a bin made from pallets, inserts a thermometer and then lets it heat up and cool down, becoming beautiful black finished compost. At my age, I'm probably never going to have a garden again, but I sure do love watching what everyone does to make sure their gardens are healthy and productive!

I have watched, enjoyed and learned so much over the years but this seems totally contradictory to the rules of composting to me. First, you dont get weeds of any kind if you keep a hot compost pile. Do you feed it with anything but spent plants at years end? Do you simply want a cold pile you need to do nothing to? You might want to check out Ben Hollar at Hollar Homestead on that. They have a static hot compost system that works great. But labor intensive. They have more mouths to feed, so it gets easier to have left over scraps and you want to share w the pigs for them however. Second, I have purchased and used the very weed cloth you use from old videos suggestions. We have wire grass in SE VA. It grows right thru and now I have inches of soil overlaying the fabric w weeds growing through. It cant be removed without equipment and in a backyard urban system is impossible. Third, Withfabric youwill get no worm action in your bin and I dont see how you make any compost without worm activity. Fourth- let your chickens be a bigger part of composting instead of being a negative. Its GREAT they were in your raised beds. They are clearly fertilized w the best chicken manure ever. Just top them off w a bit more soil and youll be fine. If you want significant compost output, you need a hot compost method, more human input to turn it, and with a tractor easily done of no weed cloth, and more fresh input from animals and scraps. Certainly, the work involved is a consideration as you age, but just know it will take years for a cold compst system to work out and not give you he volume you ultimately need. Calculating in costs to buy as u age may be more what u need. I ❤ u guys, and not trying to be difficult here in any way, but to ultimately save u work. PS- since you closed in the chickens for the cold, are they getting sufficient ventilation for their best health? Other homesteads place ventilation at the top of chicken safety lists in cold weather over cold due to chickens natural coat. 🙏🏻 in all you do.

Generally, a useful idea, but can your chickens fly a bit? If they can they can fly out of a compost bin of most any design that isn't more than 4 feet tall. To get them in, they just need a walking board of a 2x6, or so. You can even give them a walking board to get out if you have fat chickens that don't like to fly. The design of the bin is to keep as much rot as possible inside, but it will take a lot of rot to end up with some compost of a decent volume. The other issues are possible wind damage and worm access.

I think you should put more of the metal roofing on the other sides of your compost area. Looks great. I am so excited for spring. ❤

I think it is a brilliant idea! It’s a prime example of “working smarter, not harder.” Letting your chickens do the work benefits both of you…and keeps them out of the raised beds. I was looking at the compost that Kevin scraped up and although it may not be quite as broken down quite yet as you would like, it doesn’t have far to go. It’s so rich and black! I can’t wait to see your garden this year. 😊

I think this is a fantastic idea! Nothing better than homemade compost! Most of your kitchen scraps can go in them, as well as your garden scraps and manure.
I live in the city, and compost a lot of waste that would otherwise go to a landfill. Since composting, I've reduced the trash I put out by almost 75%, and have fantastic compost for all of my needs.

You should look into perennial cover crops for your beds. So many benefits to doing so, including wind protection for the winter. In our tomato and pepper beds, we are using a white clover, and in the flower beds, we have micro clover. Plant them once and you are done.

The thing I find super frustrating with that green mesh fencing is how quickly it degrades and makes a mess! Makes me wonder if it’s even UV stable. It may not even be an issue in Missouri but in Colorado at almost 7000’ feet elevation the UV’s are intense!

Only thing if you make more...put over in Waddelsville since you won't have chickens out in where the raised beds are once you start planting...waddelsville will work on a couple more of the compost heaps

If you want to encourage the chickens to work the compost pile more often, throw a handful of feed on the pile every few days, or so. Let the feed fly as if trying to cover the entire compost pile. It doesn't take much to get the chickens busy and interested in what else they might find. If weed, or old vegetable seeds and such sprout, all the better.

Having one or two other separate compost piles would be best, as each one started at varying times wiill give you a continuous supply of compost.

This will work better than you think. Watch Ben over at the Holler homestead. He put a wire ring inside the chicken run and once it disappears he rakes it back up into the ring. I think he does this 2/3 times before removing it and putting into a finishing pile, then to the garden it goes when needed.

You could tie tomato twine, or other twine, around the fabric over the edge of the raised beds. If you use a trucker's hitch, it'd be very quick and easy to remove/install.

Morning both, I love the channel, thank you for all your wisdom! One advice from experience using vowen weed fabric for years. After a couple of years, (especially under compost with the heat) the fabric starts to integrate in the soil and starts shredding. I've had a nightmare trying to get the 1000s of small piece of plastic out of my soil. I still have loads. It can turn into microplastic and gets absorbed by plants, ingested by animals.

Do you have, or have access to, a smaller rototiller? I could see an exterior, path or boarder, of tilled ground around your new composter. Yes it would be muddy so maybe only on 3 sides. It would break up the weed roots between the pasture turf and your nutrient rich compost pile which hopefully the chickens would help msintain.

No question about it, you two come up with some of the best ideas! I learn a lot from you. Right now we are in Missouri too, we just moved here the beginning of January. Unfortunately we weren't able to find a suitable place with land so we could do all that we wanted to do, so we moved into town (and love it!). We will continue to search for the right property for us and start our own homestead. I'm excited to find that spot to call home(stead) and start using all the tips and tricks you have shared with us!

Could have used the weed fabric on the cattle panel instead by sowing it on (like what is done in the Johnson Su reactor). That would allow the air flow that the pile needs. However, this pile is gonna be fire with the chickens turning it and adding their manure to it. Will definitely need to have more piles and more chickens too seeing they have a designated physical job now apart from eggs.
