    The whole land is supposed to be empty, it would make no sense to have built bridges but no built towns to start. My impression is the whole point is to have players build out the whole world, bridges included.

      I can see that being the case later down the road when wars last longer. But for a 2 day playtest the only way to find the action is to hope that a bridge is built or search for a boat.
      At least for the playtest having some default bridges that connect some of the land masses would be nice. Or maybe not having so many rivers that cut of pieces of land.

Because they have already stated that this test is going to be nothing like the end product they’ve also stated that this test is not going to have the same number of people as will be playing the game. I actually think you have a different idea about testing the devs do

      @@Skeeters_Lint Sorry I'm going to have to disagree. Most play test especially ones in Pre-Alpha not even Alpha or Beta almost never are the same game when fully released.
      If Anvil will be anything like Foxhole it will have a lot of options for players. Right now Anvil has like 5% of what Foxhole has to offer.

      Things to get people into player interaction faster will give more data on such interactions.
      The only reasons I can think of to not have bridges is to test their building as well as avoiding players concentrating too much near pre-built assets.

    I was on the remnant side at the battle of Mirford and we had a similar size army like the ancients, but we got lost in the woods going to a fort that didn't exist at the crossroads. It was a Teutaborg Forest scenario when we got back but we were very disorganized once we lost our ram and we had no purpose at the town since we couldn't destroy it. good video at showing the battles

      Losing the ram and ladders really slows pushes down. I hope some more items like that are added here soon or easier way to obtain them for sieges.

      Agreed! We will see if they keep enemy voice's on. They use to be on in Foxhole but then they took that away.

      and don't forget someone on your team has to actually find an enemy base to even know it's on the map and take an assessment of how advanced and how many there are and same thing for knowing where resources are

    Great video, I think the devs really undersold (from what I read at least) Anvil Empires, because this made me infinitely more hyped than the steam page did.

      yeh well i think the game is on the down low rn because the devs are under enough pressure to fix things and have more tests and giant ques to get into the test already

    This looks really fun! The 2 shield walls coming together, and some of the blue players just bolting away was very interesting, can imagine that happening in actual melee warfare.

      Yea, the way that the group psychology worked at 7:50 was really cool to see, the team on the right got some momentum and all pushed at once, and it made a lot of the other side decide to run. It seems like the sort of thing that should decide fights in a game like this, hopefully it's something that the devs can encourage as they flesh out the combat system

      It kind of does alright in the sense that once you are in “combat” you are slowed for 4 seconds. Easy to pick people off while they are running. Especially if you have couple archers.

      yeh everyone has to make their gear so if you're low on it sometimes you just turn and run and if you look closely you can see on both sides injured people backing out if the fight

    Naah… no default bridges. Players need to create their own infrastructure. There’s a reason why there’s a saying that all roads lead to Rome. They build roads primarily so they could mobilize their armies efficiently.
    I would love to see real battle tactics executed in this game, though.

    Nice Video. As Thane of Deer Keep It was a great honor to know the town fortifications that I had VERY hastily built (just look at the magic at 8:36) held and were a key factor in the town's defense. The town was made by only about 10 people during the first day. After the major towns of the ancients began to fall ( heard there was management issues) we became inundated with refugees looking to setup huts. We had started with a build up of rations of about 200 which quickly ran out, 30 spears, and maybe about 10-30 heavy armor kits with swords and shields at the start. The repair bench and people looting everything they could after a skirmish fight is the primary reason the town held through the night. It was a miracle that everyone didn't die from starvation (although it looks like you got close haha), the fact the gate held was insane. When the ladder attack occurred one of the key reasons it was repelled was due to their being a double gated courtyard making anyone that jumped off the wall trapped and could be dealt with later at a time of the defenders choosing.
    Fun fact. Nobody attacked the north side of Deer Keep. it only had a single stick wall and simple gate. with a non-gated wood wall archway leading directly to the townhall. How it was never attacked or scouted is a miracle. That same area was also where the farming, fishing and emergency tree grove were located which is what kept us all from starving completely, the gate alive, and repair chips to fix armor.

      I went out that north side quite a bit to flank around with an axe and caught a few archers ha. But yea I was wondering why they didn't try to attack the north.
      They did have that awesome ladder attack on the southeast side!

    I think the best thing to do is create natural "bridges" like stones the player can jump to. But only 1 person can fit on a stone at a time. It provides the versatility of map traversal for player roles (pvp or otherwise), but is still frustrating enough to deal with what by the mid game, its nowhere near enough to provide logistical needs. While also providing Leroy-Jinkin banzai squads late game clutch backline play options.

    4:07 Question: I think they should allow you to loot your hut if the town hall has been destroyed but maybe after a certain amount of time. So the side that did attack has a chance to extract loot they rightfully won while giving you a chance to reclaim loot. Could create cool battles where people want to hold the enemy off to loot items they really want.

      i wish that the buildings became neutral when the town hall was broken and they became a part of the faction that rebuilds the townhall and marked it with their claim flags I found it tedious having to bulldoze the entire town after capturing it and smashing hours of hard work just because its flag was the wrong color just to rebuild it all so I could get some iron deposits

    I don't think there should be default bridges. I don't even think there should be default roads. it limits players creativity and forces you to build on certain places. default bridges would just be the meta place to build a fort.

      What if resource nods spawned super far away from the bridges? Pretty much the main big cities now are always near silver resource nods.
      I still think you would have course have people build by the bridge but they would be the "group" that guards the bridge ya know?
      At least for these test default bridges would help those that want to join combat easier.

      @@RobertLovesGames hmm... maybe something less efficient? like how about a shallow area? shallow water where as you're crossing it you cannot hold your shield up and would be vulnerable to arrow fire and slowed? fording rivers in those times where a danger after all.

      I would even accept eating better food to have more energy to swim across.

      @@RobertLovesGames oh ofcourse! I love theory crafting and discussing this sort of thing with people.
      last I played in the alpha I just came across a town where the gate and the road outside wasn't matched up for some reason, there was a player made road headed out of the gate, but the wall was just built over the regular road, I think for defensive purposes. I dunno I just hope that either let us remove the pre-built bridges or roads, or just don't place any on the map at all and let them happen organically over the course of a war.
      I get it in the world of Foxhole that there are premade structure, but Anvil strikes me as(and I don't know the lore here) but as a bunch of civilizations colonizing a long abbandoned land. could be cool if road networks shifted from war to war.

    I like the concept of this game, but I’m not gonna lie the part that I hate most in foxhole is the guys running up with the bayonets and that’s what this whole game is

      I’m with you on that Bayonets drive me crazy and always make my infantry sessions much shorter.
      Luckily I’m anvil you can’t move fast around like you can in Foxhole when in combat.

      @@RobertLovesGames yep voip broke multiple times, it seemed like it was a server side issue because most of my clan members had the issue at the same times.
      Did you notice any hit registration problems on nakeds? I get the idea of baiting attacks to slow the enemy but there were some instances where I'd swing at a fresh respawn while they were right in front of me and they seemed to just run through my swing and take no damage, slowing me and allowing them to continue dumping water on the fires we started. Other than that issue I had a ton of fun and cant wait for the 30th!

      Yes I think I had that happen either once or twice with fresh respawns as well. Maybe they set some no damage timer for new spawns?
      And same! I think I'm gonna focus more on two-handed axe and archery for the next pvp test!

    How does the sieging mechanic work? Is it a special camp type that attackers can only make adjacent to settlements?

      Exactly they can set up that special camp with the tents and they have a limited amount of spawns and resources to keep attacking. I think it still needs some work. There is another PvP test coming up soon so maybe we will get a chance to use it again.

      you can also make it at your base and wheel it over or use hand-held torches and flasks to break things but that's a bad idea because the rams are SUPER broken they explode for no reason teleport violate nutans laws break things several feat in front of them etc so sieges can be pretty stressful

    Awesome gameplay! Clearly they have a lot to work on but it looks accurate enough to actual melee combat. Kind of like how in Foxhole when you're on artillery I mean its kinda boring right? as compared to run and gun.
    Watch some videos from Battle of the Nations they do full armored 150 vs 150 and it looks similar to this. Anyone complaining about melee being a numbers game, go read some history. It mainly comes down to luck.
    I think this game has great potential and it'll fill a niche but I hope it's entertaining enough to keep us all coming back.

    the ammo for the ballista needed a T3 town hall and Deer Keep didnt have that, and also noone was getting wood for normal bows lol

    You make a good spy, but you just wanted to see the ladder attack, didnt you? ;)
    Very fun video, gives more of a fun idea how fighting will be going in this game. I think I kinda like the core features, like combat mode and shieldwalling. It looks like the game tries to encourage more tactical approach in melee combat, even more than Foxhole, and way more than Mordhau or Chivalry, and there wasnt anything like this in the gaming before, maybe only in organised Mount and Blade games. The closest things I can think of watching this type of combat are M&B and Holdfast: Nations at War, with Holdfast especially encouraging forming of a line, but of course consisting of muskets, so the fighting is a bit different. And of course, fighting is just a part of Anvil. I really like what I saw for now from it.
    Btw it was the first thought when I saw the ram attacking this castle's gate: "they should open the gate when the ram is speeding up towards it and let it in and kill it" :D And it seems that it was something your team was trying to do. I dont think it's a valid historical way of dealing with a ram, though :D Also, as far as I understand, just opening the gate makes it invulnerable to strike of the ram. I dont know if thats a feature or not XD

      Ha a part of me really wanted to see the ladder attack and literally the other part of me just forgot I could tell people in chat what was happening lol. I was to immersed being a spy!
      Yea the ram and gate physics and interactions need some work for sure ha. But we are still really early in the testing.

    You die i 1 hit because you dont eat food. even if you respawnn if your previous vitality is low you spawn with low vitality too

    Foxhole for me. Logi-war better when mechanised. Fights are better as soldiers than as cave men. But bravo for sufferingthis 👍

    im really hoping that we get to see the progression of technology--ideally it could be from antiquity to the dark ages/medieval times into maybe arquebus/great canon/bombard as the FINALY tiers of tech, weapons which never stop being pricy and rare. it seems to start later than that though which i'm fine with, early dark ages.
    meanwhile, we see the advancement from bronze thru iron and steel, and various designs of armor throughout the medieval eras as metallurgy progressed, as well as designs became smarter and smarter
    you could start with slings, javelins, throwing axes, and bows, and invent crossbows, arbalests, composite bows, longbows, repeater crossbows, etc.
    and for medieval weapons, start with daggers, simple spears and short swords, hatchets, and in addition to materials changing/metal qualities, you get longspears, longswords, arming swords, bastard swords, greatswords, zweihanders, halberds, greataxes, pikes, maces, morningstars, flails, hammers, greathammers, polehammers
    im curious how armor progression will go. starting with leather and chainmail into plate seems simple, but going through different material qualities and armor designs would be super cool. im hoping plate armor is common enough to be obtainable by dedicated solo players, but uncommon enough that you can see someone decked in full plate and go "oh shit"

      I would love all those weapons! I hope it's like Foxhole and how the tech works and how it goes from World War 1 to start of 2.
      Lets hope there are lots of weapon choices and armor choices.

    I don't like how slow the combat is. Lotta players in one fight really slowed everything down. Then, it became a math game of how many bodies and how many hits till they have no more bodies

      I don't like how slow it's right now as well. I think weapon diversity will change a lot of that. I assume it will turn more into like Foxhole with forward bunkers and spawning and battling more often.
      But we have probably a ways to go before we get into that.

      but yeah, the slowdown during combat seems horrible

    i dont like how the vision during night works. should honestly just darker the look out, and should be gradual, not this fucking small circle of light that you can barely see away from yourself

      also btw bears (and all other wildlife) can see perfectly in the dark making exploring impossible and run in random directions when damaged and regenerated hp the scariest thing in the world is a bear in the village at night and the icing on the cake is when all the snakes spawn in when the servers up it goes to night immediately XD

    Foxhole of antiquity. It looks very good. But it seems to me that ancient field battles require more discipline and communication

      So far the battles take a lot more communication. If it plans to be like Foxhole in any way we will need a lot more tech and weapons to work with.

      I agree. Still Pre-Alpha so they have long ways to go and a lot to add. I would guess full release is still about 2 years away.

      For the first official Anvil War I’m sure it will.
      Overall I bet players will find which one they like more and I’m honestly sure some players will prefer Foxhole.
      I’ll probably end up going back and forth between the two.
      Definitely a concern though! Thanks for bringing that up!

      Agreed. Hopefully they make some changes for that. Some people have suggested on having sort of cooldown of it being raised and dropped.

      hey it's better than when you raid a village and they lock you inside forever which yes DOES HAPPEN! doors need to only be usable from one side by anyone and cant be shut when someones standing in the way

    this seems like a too quiet game and relying on a "mammon" rush like vocal leader to emerge in every battle to coordinate the mob...Yikes

      @Robert LuvsGames That's true. To me, it just looks kinda slow. I still fear clans ruining the game, I've never joined any, but clans leave a sour taste when they're so hostile and controlling over a game.

      @@averymorin6651 I see some good potential for smaller groups that can still make good impact and don't have to join the larger groups. Solo for Anvil right now is pretty rough I would say.
      But again we have a long ways to go :D

      For right now I agree. It can be pretty slow. Needs more weapon options.
      Going in naked with two handed axe is fun!

      I don't see how weapon options are gonna help with that when the main mechanic is
      "Run up to someone. M1 fatwalk for 4s"
      Having people in formation looks neat, but having foxhole experience, directing players is worse then herding cats

      @@rzu1474 Again I think going around with two handed axe is already different than the slow walking of sword and shield. So add in crossbows, maybe two handed swords, throwing axe, claymores and just whatever other weapons and it could change it. Still early in game development so hard to tell.
      Foxhole has a lot of weapon choices.
