One piece can be deceptive, cuz it looks goofy, but it has some very deep themes, especially more you read, if you want to dip your toes in it, read the first 100 chapters, cuz that's the prologue

@@CozyReaderKelly everyone advocates for it, but honestly if you’re not loving it now, save yourself the time as you’re probably not going to love it later and there are so many great manga to check out.
Because it’s so long, many people will argue you need to read an insane amount of chapters (such as 100 chapters which is over 10 volumes!) for it to “get good” and speaking as someone who read 45 volumes on that promise, if you’re not liking it…don’t bother.
I found it fun enough to read but I do not think it is for everyone, despite its popularity.

Some advice if you ever want to watch the Fullmetal Alchemist anime: there are actually two different versions of the anime out there! There’s one that was made in 2003, and another one made in 2009.
Now, it should be noted that the version from 2003 was made when the manga wasn’t even at the halfway-point of its story, and the show runners basically had to come up with their own storyline for it. And as a result of this, it’s VASTLY different from the manga and 2009 version in character, theme, story, and tone.
Despite this, it’s still a very good show that I would suggest watching before starting the newer anime.

Came across this video while casually browsing TH-cam for manga related topics. I highly recommend you check out the Akira manga. It's one of the most influential manga of all time and the movie from 1988 doesn't cover all of it. It's just 6 volumes so not a huge time commitment either. If you enjoy the blade runner/dystopian future setting, give it a shot!

And in a similar corner of darker/more adult stuff, I really recommend monster. It's dark, but it's not graphic. In fact it's very tasteful in its handling of dark themes.
It's about a surgeon who finds out a kid he saved several years prior might be a serial killer (or worse) and goes on a trip across central Europe to find out who exactly this kid was and what's going on there... A really cool meditation on empathy, forgiveness, responsability, justice... and authoritarianism, since the story takes place in germany , austria, chzechia right after the fall of the berlin wall.
A really good entry into manga for western audiences.

One piece is my favorite manga for a wide variety of reasons, I’ve been week to week for a little less than a year and I never want it to end but I also do want it to end so I can cry my eyes dry. When One Piece ends I will revert back to a little baby and cry nonstop. The emotions you feel reading the story, the interactions between friends who are found family is so wholesome and knowing that Luffy will start an entire war and challenge the highest authority in the world to save any one of his crew members and friends they meet along the way. As for the art style I think it’s perfect for the type of story and characters that Oda draws. Sure it’s goofy looking but One Piece tackles serious topics such as racism, slavery, and oppressive government body’s. And that’s just the side stuff the main story is luffys search for the One Piece and seeing his journey is so satisfying sort of like starting from the bottom and rising to the top. And the lore holy crap watching or reading always put a huge grin on my face and the power system is so interesting. Seeing the different ways a fight can play out puts me on the edge of my seat. It’s so fascinating seeing it through a new readers eyes because I want to erase my memory and read it all over again. So I hope in the future you give it a shot.

@@CozyReaderKelly I was actually going to say Fruits Basket as well... for me, Fruits Basket and Fullmetal Alchemist were my first two manga that got me into it when I was 11, so to me, the two series are linked in how strong an impression they made on me. Fruits Basket definitely shows its age a little, especially in the art style of the early volumes, but it finds its feet pretty quickly, and if Tohru can endear herself to you at all as a character, it's worth it to see where the story takes her and the other characters.
additionally, I feel like Yotsuba& might be a good one to check out if you like the cute kid parts of Spy x Family. Yotsuba& feels a lot more like a series of short little vignettes in the slice of life genre, but if you're looking for something nice and cozy, that'd be it. and on the more suspenseful side of things, Naoki Urasawa's Monster is one of those series where you pick it up and feel glued to it immediately. it just pulls you along and pulls you along, right to the very end.

Seeing as you won’t be continuing Toilet Blund, I hope you don’t mind if I talk a little bit about it in your comments section!
I know you didn’t feel that attracted to it so this isn’t to comvice you to read it or anything, I just felt like sharing my own opinion (sorry if it’s a long comment!) It has to be one of my favourite mangas but it’s hard to get into from the get-go which is totally understandable. I see that it’s often classified as a comedy but after a few volumes in it gets incredibly interesting and introspective on topics like death and I really really enjoyed it! Although, it has made me cry more than laugh (despite the adorable art style, it really is heartbreaking sometimes), and I feel like calling it a comedy past volume 4 doesn’t make a lot of sense. The mangas go really deep into the characters emotions and the plot just gets better :D
It’s just a story about some kids, but it really knows how to twist the knife in the wound. I’ve got to say that it might be one of the saddest mangas I’ve ever read to be honest, but I love it for that reason. Also, I understand that it’s not really for you but I just wanted to leave another personal perspective on the series here, I hope you don’t mind!

If you want to dip your toe into the slice of life/romance corner of manga I suggest you give Maison Ikkoku a shot. It's about a student who failed to get into university and moves into a boarding house while he studies for his next attempt a year later. While there he meets and falls in love with the manager, a young widow. The manga is mostly about their love story but the other residents at the Ikkoku add some humor and have their own smaller arcs. It's very good.
The author, Rumiko Takahashi is mostly known for her comedic action/fantasy shonen manga (Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 and Inu Yasha) but this one is my personal favorite and despite being quite romantic it is classified as seinen, so it might be an easier transition considering you started with shonen manga.

In terms of romcom manga, I would 100% recommend one called “Kaguya-sama: Love is War”. The gist of it is that there are these two people who are both in love with each other but have way too much pride to confess so each chapter really boils down to this intense yet hilarious psychological battle of one of them trying to force a confession out of the other. It often gets compared to death note in that regard but it much more lighthearted
It is a little bit of a longer series (sitting at about 270 chapters at the moment) and is still currently ongoing and the series is very episodic in nature with not a whole lot of plot driving the story but there are plenty of arcs where there is a plot driving the story forward, just more often than not most chapters will be their own little isolated story (these do sort of get called back to in later chapters though)
Even though it’s a bit longer in chapter count, I feel like it’s a perfect binge read series because each chapter is a pretty quick read and the humour (for me at least) lands almost every time so it makes it enjoyable. I completely understand that you’ll want to finish some shorter series that are complete but I highly recommend this one, it’s one of my favourites and I think you might enjoy it!
(also, there aren’t many tropes like love triangles or conflicts that could be avoided by having the characters just talk, so that’s a bonus if you’re not a fan of them!)

I obviously don't know your tastes, but if you are okay with extreme violence I would highly recommend Berserk, but it's not really until volume 4 (of the paperback) that it starts to _really_ get good and you really start to understand and like the protagonist.

If I were to recommend any series, it'd be Demon Slayer. I think the anime is a better way to view the series since it's known for incredible animation, but the manga is great, too. It was the first action manga I'd ever read, and I think it's pretty easy to follow in the fights. It does get dark at times, but it's not too as bad and is also few and far in between. The first book is darker than the majority of the series, aside from later fights where it's necessary. Basically, Demon Slayer is about a young boy named Tanjiro who loses his family to a Demon attack, leaving only his younger sister, Nezuko, alive. However, Nezuko transforms into a demon while Tanjiro is trying to find a doctor for her wounds, causing her to attack him. She eventually comes to her senses, and, against all odds, protects Tanjiro when a "demon slayer" comes to kill her and bring Tanjiro to a safer place. Demon slayer follows Tanjiro and his sister in his journey to become a demon slayer to slay the demon who killed his family and to find a cure for his sister. This is my absolute favorite series and I think you'd enjoy it, too.

The sheer thrill I felt when u showed u picked up TPN as one of the contenders and I'm so glad u ended up enjoying it as much as u did, I can't describe how much I cherish that series, I would always reccomend TPN for a new manga reader, the way it pulls u in instantly in this dark unforgiving reality the kids have to face, and nonstop twists and turns u can't help but put yourself in the kids place, especially due to these high tension psychological thriller elements kaiu shirai so gracefully excels at.

In order to find them, they must decrypt the codes that are tattooed onto their skin on a number of escaped convicts throughout Hokkaido. As they find the convicts, they must also fight against a rogue Japanese division and a group of samurais that are also searching for the gold as well.

I liked the artwork, concept and some of the storyline of the manga, but overall I have since read other manga that I prefer.

If you want to read some more manga, I recommend March comes in like a lion and Mushishi. They're both slow paced, but have really nice out.
Mushishi is more like a recollection of short japanese folklore and mythology. It follows a main character which deals with the spirits and teaching people how to coexist with the harmless ones. The art style is absolutely gorgeous, out of this world.
March comes in like a lion (Sangatsu no lion) is a more drama focused, about a little kid who becomes an orphan and is now a teenager living by himself after moving out from his adopter's parent house. The kid is a professional Shogi player (japanese chess like game) and that's how he gets by in life, but he's lost in life with a couple trauma.

I know probably everyone will tell you this, but One Piece popularity is given through the later progression of the manga, the true gold of the series is really shown later on. Although I like the beginning, I can totally understand why someone wouldn't. As it is long running, there are a lot of unexpected things that intentionally return to us all the time. Hmm, if it’s only the art style you didn’t like I would say maybe give One piece another try but with digitally coloured manga online. It will make it easier to follow. But if you didn’t like the characters either than this isn’t for you as, true one piece gets better later but it’s starts good too . Actually One piece is a story that just gets better and better with each next story to the point where it’s not necessarily just popular but the best fic story. BUT it starts off good too with smaller stories.

I shall premise this comment with, I have now the first 50 One Piece volumes. I don’t disagree with your views over crowded panels, but my main problem is that the start of the series is pretty much Luffy gets a new team member each individual single-ish. That being said, I do love the humour and how deep it gets which is why I kept up with it. Good on you for not being put off by a series that has 101 volumes (at the time of writing this comment). One piece, to me, has amazing world building and detail, the art style may seem a bit cartoony. But as the manga goes on, You see Oda's art get better and better, mind you Oda started drawing One piece when he was 16, he is now 47. One piece isnt just a happy go lucky kid beating up bad guys, but it is actually a story of anti capitalism, and revolution. The story really ties into itself at every step of the way, it definitely gets darker and more serious at certain arcs. One piece entails, segregation, human trafficking, slavery, and colonialism and revolution. I promise to you, the story isnt what it seems, the manga really picks up around Baratie, which is chapter 40

I recommend Shadows House and Snow White with the Red Hair! SH is an ongoing manga just like Spy×Family and it has a similar vibe with The Promised Neverland. Just like TPN, it revolves around kids so it starts out all cute and wholesome until dark secrets and mysteries are revealed.
While I haven't really read tha manga of Snow White with the Red Hair, I have watched the anime when I was in my early teens. I remember it being really good with the romance making me fangirl while the medical and political stuff (the protagonist is a royal pharmacist) making me super intrigued.
I also recommend Land of the Lustrous, Made in Abyss, Dorohedoro, and Beastars. It would be awesome if you checked these 4's anime adaptations, especially LOTL it's just SO gorgeous. All the mangas I recommended have their respective animes and all of those animes have an amazing soundtrack. Beastars as well as The Promised Neverland's openings and endings are complete bangers!

Since at least 5 of the manga has mystery in it, I think you'll like my recommendation. It's called Hyouka. Now how do I explain this...
I know this series from the anime adaptation and it is my favorite anime of all time (I'm a sucker for mystery). However, this one is adapted not from manga but a series of book called Classic Literature Club, the first volume called Hyouka.
It's about a highschool boy who is really good at solving mysteries, Sherlock Holmes level of deduction kinda stuff, but is very very lazy. He promised himself to have a quiet highschool life and not spending much energy, but he is constantly finding himself in a situation where he has to solve a case. You can go for either the anime show or the book, I hope you like it.
About The Promised Neverland, we had the same reaction. I couldn't stop myself from reading it the first time and finished the first arc in one sitting.

I got a really long list of recommendations here but I have a lot of series I think you should at least hear about!
If you want something sweet and fun there’s a lesser-known series called “Flying Witch”. It’s slice-of-life following the lives of a witch and her family in the countryside!
A comedic fantasy series I’d heavily recommend is “Delicious in Dungeon” where a party of adventurers have to delve into a massive dungeon. But since they had to flee before and lost all of their supplies they learn to live off of the resources of the dungeon itself!
Plus the elf, Marcille, is hilarious!
If you’re looking for more action series I have four that come to mind:
My Hero Academia is the quintessential super hero manga out now. It’s starting to near its end (maybe?) but it’s a fun and tense ride as we follow a kid pursue his dreams of becoming the world’s greatest hero!
I don’t know if you’re a Pokémon household but the Pokémon Adventures manga series is incredible! It’s the most intricate the world of Pokémon has ever been portrayed and is filled with so many amazing characters!
Third I’d recommend is Soul Eater. It’s a series from the mid 2000s and it’s full of style and *drip!* (the author did take a few chapters to nail the full style down but wow is it a feats for the eyes the entire way through!)
It’s about kids with the power to resonate their souls and turn into powerful weapons hunting the evils of the world under the watchful eye of Death himself! It’s also hilarious as they attend a school established by Death 😂 The characters are incredibly colorful for sure!
And following Soul Eater I have to recommend the authors latest and (for now) last work: Fire Force.
And I do recommend reading it straight after for… reasons 🙃
It’s about a boy with fire powers who wants to become a hero after he lost his family in a massive supernatural fire. All while the world he lives in is under threat from spontaneous human combustions that turn people into fire monsters!
I’d also have to recommend the anime for that last one the most because WOW the sound design! It got green lit for a new season recently and hopefully makes it all the way to the end since the manga wrapped up recently!
(And unfortunately Soul Eater’s anime had to deviate its story since it caught up to the manga’s publishing when being made so the anime never adapted the full story and the manga’s better ending…)
There’s also the world of light novels! They’re like manga in terms of (semi) regular publishing of ongoing stories but in novel form.
The one I recommend the most to new readers are Log Horizon and Overlord!
Log Horizon follows the journeys of MMO players as they are mysteriously trapped in the game they’ve all been playing, or at least it looks like the game?
It’s actually a very heavy political drama with a lot of action thrown in! The anime recently got its 3rd season too and people hope it gets a 4th to make it to the end!
Overlord is one of the heavier series. It also follows an MMO game player as he becomes trapped in an alternate reality as his game character.
This time around though he played the game as an evil Skeleton Necromancer Overlord as leader of a guild in the game. Now he’s “living” as a Skeletal Overlord as he tried to understand the world he was thrown into!
Very deep political series with a heaping helping of fantasy and horror as you follow the villains of the fantasy!
    Protagonists, yes… but they’re not heroes…
Lastly there is a much older novel series that a fantasy junkie NEEDS to read!
    *Record of Lodoss War!*
The quintessential fantasy story. It was actually the retelling of the author’s Dungeons & Dragons game he played with his author friends. I’m actually not sure how easy or hard it is to find the novels in English but the OVA/original video animation series is one of the most beautiful pieces of art you will ever see!
If you like D&D or Lord of the Rings you got to read it!
I really hope this helped! I’ve been trying to get into more actual reading myself so all these series come with a hearty recommendation!
There’s also another recommendation. But understand it is not for the faint of heart…
Berserk is the quintessential *MASTERPIECE* of manga ever made. A dark, DARK fantasy story delving into the depths of emotion and the human condition at its breaking point.
It’s a masterclass in its medium. The art by the unfortunately late Miura is a cut above all else! Thankfully his best friend and loyal understudies are working now to finish his series after his tragic passing but you will nonetheless find a wholly satisfying story… if you can stomach it because *WOW* it gets *dark*
So yeah hope you see this and have fun with frankly anything from my list of recommendations! 😀
Oh and read “Nichijou my ordinary life”, you’ll launch your sides into orbit. Check the anime too, your sides will reach Pluto by the time you’re done laughing 🤣

it's really funny how everyone has the same reaction to the beginning of One Piece :D
I'm really not an advocate for 'pushing through' a certain section before a story starts to get good. People do that to me all the time and I really hate it. A good story would start being good at the beginning. I mean, it's not like OP's start is bad, I just found it very dry when I read for the first time.
That said... One Piece does get really good at ch70 or so and it only gets exponentially better from there, so... take that as you will^^
Once you start to understand what kind of story this is and how unique its structure is, there's no going back.

The start of one piece basically suffers from it's age. Back when it was first published it was actually very original and quite impressive compared to some of its contemporaries (really it must have been for it to keep going long enough to become the semi-institution it is). The problem is that what we expect of manga /now/ is somewhat more advanced - a lot of more recent shounen series have been expected to tap into current world pop culture (super heroes, back when MHA started for example), are expected to show somewhat deeper themes right from the get go, or are expected to deconstruct or parody common tropes of the kind OP was originally built on.
You can see the same problem with Jojo's Bizzare Adventure - parts 1 and 2 are really kind of dated, in terms of content and structure, compared to the later parts as they're much more in tune with what was popular back then (Fist of the North Star for example) than what kind of things are popular in recent times.
It's a problem that, unfortunately, doesn't have any great solutions beyond asking the reader to just keep in mind that some of the complexity we expect now wasn't as expected back when they started off.

It’s definitely not for everyone) BUTTTT if you wouldn’t mind I’d like to recommend checking out Volume 0, which contains an alternate version of the story (basically like an early pilot version/the original one shot which the current story was based off of) as it’s a very self-contained story (only 3 chapters) which a lot of different story elements and alternate details. I can't really recommend that many cuz u read my favorites from my collection lol. Assassin classroom is not the same as promise neverland but I always think of them together and both gave me unique vibes and jujutsu kaisen for more mature action series close to full metal than one piece

Umm, that's a first, any person who reads one piece and didn't like it for any reason, when they pick it up later and keep going beyond the first volumes they fell in love with it. It's simply much more then a pirate boy that sail on the sea searching a treasure. If you think you won't like one piece after just one read (problaby because you didn't keep reading after the first chapters) you are definitely a very small exception to the norm.

Not liking One Piece is understandable, because it is an investment that needs time to really get into.
But for the future I have a couple of recommendations:
    -To Your Eternity
    -Beastars
    -Mob Psycho 100
    -My Dress-Up Darling
    -Dr. Stone
All of these series are quite recent, are really popular with fans, and have amazing art and story.

I think a specification should be made about Mob Psycho 100... I actually like the manga, and I own several volumes, so I'm not here to say that the art is bad, but it is unconventional. it has a very rough look to it, some might call it amateurish, and it might not present well to someone who doesn't know it at all.
what I will say is that the writing in Mob Psycho 100 is amazing, and the people who did the anime definitely did something very special with it. they kept as much of the manga's original look and feel as they could, which I really really appreciate, but they polished up a lot of that roughness in terms of anatomy and perspective, and then went above and beyond on the quality of the animation itself. you can tell that they put a lot of love into the adaptation. and honestly, looking back at the manga's art style, it makes perfect sense. one of the things that the manga does really well, is that it conveys movement and shot composition. and that's everything you'd want from an animation storyboard. it makes total sense that a bunch of animators would look at that and take it as an invitation to go nuts with it. so like... I'd recommend either the manga or the anime, whichever makes the story easiest to consume... because the story is one of my favorites.

Don't feel bad about not liking One Piece or its art style. I really like the manga, but I also have a good friend who is not a bit fan of the Odas art, though she watched the anime in the past. Also the manga gets even more overcrowded with the future volumes...
I guess you will finish the serie you liked first before picking up other recommondations. It's a really good selection and I count the once you like among my favourites as well :)
But since you mentioned you like the art of Takeshi Obata. He is my absolut favourite manga-ka (manga artist) and if you want to later on read more of his work I would suggest "Hikaru no Go". It is (sadly) not as popular as the other series you are reading, but it is my favourite manga of all time. It about the japanese boardgame iGo and has a lot of great character development. It has fantasy elements to it, but also not to much. Even though Hikaru no Go is older than Death Note I like the art style of it even more.

One Piece has 1100 chapters so it unfortunately is not an easy one to get a solid read on unless one really makes a big time commitment to actually sink their teeth into it. It’s definitely not for everyone and like all long running shonen it really is for a specific target demographic. I wouldn’t let it or its fans spook you out of the medium, it’s entirely reasonable to not enjoy it everyone has different tastes. I think you were very fair with your takes

I can understand not liking the first volume of One Piece. It's the mother of all slow burns as far as story goes and the world building is so intricate that every re-read makes you find new information and details that you didn't notice before. It's honestly a series that gets better on reread every time because you know more. Because there are so many details in the art that foreshadow for the very far future, it's very busy as far as panels and art a lot of times, which is a lot to get used to if you are new to manga. It's definitely not a great story for beginners to manga partly because of it being so heavy on the intricate details all of which matter. Also the topics it discusses are really dark and heavy and discussed in a very nuanced way but the author loves very kid-ish comedy so you will find moments of levity in this goofy art style even in the darkest of times, which is definitely not some people's cup of tea. The want their dark stuff to be heavy and angsty all the way. Frankly the story is SO heavy on story-building, while ALSO heavy on character building with a HUGE cast of characters, while also HEAVY on themes that try to get every single angle, at that point it makes sense that it's a slow burn. It suffers from having too much world building and too many in-depth characters. I mean we don't get the main character's backstory until volumes 59-61, which is like 500/600 chapters into the story. At that point we think we know who we are following as it is a story about him and yet... And then after every big game changer in the story and you have to go back and reread it all again. And then you catch more stuff you never noticed and before long you spend a few minutes on every panel, carefully analyzing the art like an insane person because has he hidden something else in plain sight and you are just now noticing? It's a lot. 0/10 recommendation to manga beginners unless you like long detailed epics (like Lord of the Rings) enough to invest a lot of money, since manga volumes aren't cheap. I guess reading online is ok pricewise but a lot of people hate e-reading. On the plus side, some apps allow you to really zoom in to see ALL the tiny details on each panel. I don't think I met anyone who liked it enough to commit off just the first volume and frankly that is very fair. It's more of a thing you do once you have read a lot of manga and now feel confident in just reading a good story. Probably not your favorite, probably not the best ever, definitely a little too slow burn, but a good adventure for everyone if you have time and money to spend with it. Still would say that it's probably not something you will get into. I had the horrible privilege of being exposed to 4kids version of the anime before I ever picked up the manga so I had a vested interest in getting through the prologue of the story which is the first 12 volumes. Most manga tells full story in 12 volumes or less. This story just has the prologue of first 12 volumes, so when I say COMMITMENT and SLOW BURN I really mean it.
P.S. My manga recommendation that isn't shounen (for boys) battle action adventure is: "Skip Beat!". It is a revenge story that has comedy, some supernatural elements, a tiny bit of action, a lot of heart, a lot of introspection, very slow burn romance that suddenly picks up very far into the story and thus feels earned and natural. The protagonist is a young woman so the manga has been labeled shoujo (for girls) but it isn't too much like most shoujo because the main focus of the story is definitely revenge first and foremost for the majority of it, while most shoujo tend to be romantic comedies. It is a lot of fun too because of the fact that almost all supernatural elements are used to enhance the comedy rather then for anything else, which is very fresh take.
Another recommendation is "Nana". It is also labeled shoujo and sometimes Josei (for women) because of how dark and mature it can get despite that fact that it was labeled shoujo when it first came out.

I can understand how you feel about One Piece, it's a story that doesn't take itself seriously all the time, but when it does it's really good. But if silly jokes and gags are not your thing, then One Piece isn't for you, I thing you will enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist better. And if you're looking for a serious story, I recommend Attack On Titan.

I think One Piece has an amazing artstyle but that's coming from someone who's read countless manga growing up so when something's unique and stylized it stands out. I can see why a new manga reader wouldn't like it. It's like showing someone Dark Souls when they haven't even played Super Mario Bros or any other game in their whole life

The theme of One Piece isn't actually "piracy" but "freedom". It seems goofy at first but there are arcs that deal with slavery and racism and Luffys dream is to be the freest man in the world and whenever he finds that freedom is being denied to people he acts.
