To me this is PEAK sbmtg, these decks are how I found the channel in the first place and bought my first magic deck. These things are great, you rock dev.
Me too!! Excellent work. I was away from the game for a bit and Dev got me back in with the dimir surveil deck during guilds of ravnica. Been a fan ever since.
Glad you are doing the budget decks. This was the kind of content that got me into your channel way back in the Ixalan times. Hope you are doing great.
I appreciate making the lists budget for wildcards. I only really get to play Standard on Arena so having a list that doesn't require 16 rares means I can actually try it.
Idk, I consider 16 rares to be right around the cusp of being called a budget arena deck, because a brand new arena account that got all the promo codes and unlocked all the starter decks and after spending the coins they earned on packs. would probably have around 12-16 rares and 2-4 mythics. If you want something semi-competitive for very few rares/mythics your best bet usually mono red. I know, it's boring, but if you care about seeing number go up then that's kinda what you have to do on a budget.
That defender/chaplain deck is really shockingly good for such a budget price. I think that deck will really surprise anyone playing it or playing against it, but I love this video in general! Such great content, I'm always surprised by how affordable some cards are and that makes these videos pretty entertaining lol
As an Urabrask's Forge player, it's pretty funny to see someone else's new forge deck and you can tell they trip over their own foot expecting to use that free body from the Forge for the Anvil. It warms my heart that it's happened again here

Dev's deck building advice is not honored in this respect with this deck, and that fact is never more clear than when mulliganing. You can keep some hands with a tutor and a 1 drop but many games are lost simply because the deck doesn't have as many keepable hands as most others do. That being said, a turn 2 Forge off the back of a Goldhound just feels good. That being said part 2 the boogaloo: a Fuseling + enough removal and a Sprinter/Thrillseeker is still a potential win. Winning a game with a 3 card hand... I can't tell if that makes it awesome or shameful to be honest. It can still pull out some crazy value by, for example, losing a land to make an extra copy of a goldhound with Mycosynth Gardens, then using that for another oil on the exuberant fuseling for a Twinferno or Thrillseeker win next turn. Obviously you want to copy the Forge with the Mycosynth, but you don't always get that chance and Magic is the management of turns. Drannith Ruins has been a remarkable value adder for combat tricks. With 5 mana on the board you can add 8 damage to ya boy with that land and a Twinferno. I'm at the point where I'm wanting to cut the last copy of Monumental Facade to get another one. With 4 mana on the board, that can become a 3/3 first strike menace rampy boye or a 3/3 Fuseling - surprisingly robust. By the way, this simple land can fizzle spells that would otherwise Cut Down or hit your new little guys for 1 damage. Twinferno is the juice that holds it all together, and brings home at least half of those close games where it's down to the wire in final combat. It's a ton of fun to double exile their two big bombs for only 3 mana with Eaten Alive, but holding on to a copy as a wincon is often worth considering. Sometimes you're in emergency mode against a huge board, and a second main phase double brotherhoods end hits hard. Although it wins a lot of games, you'll often spend that Fuseling to get one of their bigger creatures down to Ichor or Brotherhoods' kill range. That's fine. All you need to win is a board with no creatures. Voldaren Thrillseeker is a beautiful card. She can ping a final 3 damage over the top of any board state by herself. She can act as a removal piece while ramping your Fuseling up a little. She can turn that 6/1 that they let through because they had lethal next turn into 14 damage. She can block a huge non-trampler and remove a chump at the same time to stall a turn. She can let the dog hit face for 4, then spend it to kill almost any creature/planeswalker. If the board is locked up against like a Phyrexian obliterator, it's not that big a deal when you can just accrue interest on daddy U's big engine and turn those 8 oil counters into 10 unblockable. Many games are won simply by pushing your last dinky little creature into a huge blocker: they let it in because "why risk the combat tricks", and then you turn that 2 damage into 6 damage. Can you tell I would have a gambling problem if I ever learned Poker? Tutoring is big in this deck, so there are one-offs of a few emergency removals and you'll often find yourself tutoring a land out. This deck can do a lot with 5 mana (shit, it can do a lot with 3 mana in the mid game when they're popping off and you're manascrewed) but you gotta get there first. The weatherlite isn't exactly a tutor, but the free scrying is nearly just as good. It rarely lives long enough to hit more than once, but to be honest whenever they remove the ship I'm happier that they have one less answer for the 4/1 with twinferno in the pocket that's darkly chuckling "soon...." Speaking of the weatherlite, you can sneak it out as a blocker quite often by Cutting Down or Drowning your own creature In Ichor. Spending cards to kill your own creatures is best used in emergencies only. This deck is nowhere near as tuned as a rakdos sacrifice deck could be, and it leans way too heavily in the Forge as the exclusive body generator when 3x or 4x Lagomos would really round the deck out nicely, but this is the first deck I ever made without anyone's input (and has been updated and trimmed like thirty times) so it's close to my heart. The deck took a real hit when bankbuster got banned, way more of a hit than I expected. If I ever make another sacrifice deck, I'd lose all the oil synergy, add 3-6 cards that spit out bodies, and 4-5 cards that trigger on deaths. That way you're relying a bit less on hard removal and can do more Drannith Ruins combat tricks. I firmly submit that a deck focused around this singular card just does not work in BO3. Against Aggro/Soldiers: tutor Brotherhoods end and/or Magmatic Sprinter. The classic footrace to the face, have fun. Against control/esper: bleed their counterspells until you have a window, no big deal. The weatherlite and your burn spells are now fishing poles. Keep a forge in the back pocket for when they Farewell. It feels SO GOOD to see a control player realize what's going on, decide to try and gain footing by holding all their mana open for counterspells, and then you just play a Mycosynth and get a free copy of the Forge - "why won't my counterspell work??" Against anything in green: pray they don't draw Tear Asunder or the green Planeswalker that kills artifacts, otherwise just combat tricks. If it's creatures you're kinda boned, but if it's a ramp deck you can often beat them to the punch. Usually you get to "Nice!" their shiny Etali right before you exile it and win the game. Against monoblack: you get to play it on turn 3 without thinking! Nice! Aw shit, they Pilfered turn 2... Honestly still probably fine. This deck wipes the floor with monoblack. Against monowhite: you done showed up to the wrong neighborhood son, get to tutoring up and making copies of that Forge before doing literally anything else. Playing against wolf decks is probably the most fun you'll have, they're really hard to beat if you aren't on top of them on turn 4, but you feel great beating them Also, Dev has a Boros Forge deck in his past videos if you're interested. Way better in terms of midrange value.

I'm sure this video is great and all, but I'm only a few minutes in and its one of the best magic uploads all year. Dev is in his zone on this one and he could be talking about anything and it'd be interesting 😂😂
Artistic Refusal is also really good in the defenders deck! You often have enough creatures to cast it for 1 or 2 mana and I've found it does a ton of work.
That Rakdos list is neat, except that Urabrask Forge tokens aren't artifacts so you can't sack them to anvil. Putting in a Vraan, Executioner's Thane, does take advantage of the little buggers, and all-around fits very good in this sac deck.
I tried them all for around 5-10 games each, here is my personal experience: Mono green is surprisingly good, I won vs some meta decks too but enchantment decks and control decks were tough, nearly impossible oponents. Toxic is rly strong, with small addition of Venerated Rotpriest the deck kicks ass, but boardwipes kinda hurt. Anvil deck is a nice twist at old school anvil, i love the new aditions to the pool. You can outlast even slow control players with the engine. I added Ob Nixilis planeswalker too and it just owns. Defenders are fine but every 2 drop in meta hits for 3 so you can not block rly well with most of your cards. Discard is not rly great cos you will discard all opponent's cards in 3-5 turns and than every discard card in your hand will be dead card and dead topdeck, while opponent topdecks valuable cards, you topdeck weak 1 drops or do nothing cards. When you even get Raven Man, he procs once or twice most of a time. This was for me worst deck, even after addition of Sheoldred. I needed to heavily modify it to score some W and at that point it was faar faaaar away from budget and was more like mono black with discard flavor. TLDR: Mono green 6/10 Golgari toxic 8/10 Anvil 9/10 Defenders 3/10 Discard 0/10(sorry)
That Golgari toxic deck is a beast. I’ve been playing it for a minute now on arena and I’ve lost exactly once, and that’s only because I had shit draws and never got any green lands.
You made a mistake in the lists in video's, which I sadly noticed only after ordering all decks. In the greenstompy deck, you say "Quirion Dryad" but in the video you have "Quirion Beastcaller". It's listed as Dryad in the decklists too, luckily not the most expensive mistake. Furthermore, the discard decklist is missing the flitting Guerrilla. Can't wait to get more decklists!
Golgari Toxic was my most common alt deck during ONE and rocked through ladder then. This one is similar in it's core. The Anvil and Discard decks are both stuff I've been meaning to try.
Concealing curtains is also really good for discard. 1 black mana defender, that transforms and allows you to discard a creature card from their hand for 1 black 2 any.... Aaand it's a 3/4 menace.
Awesome video, love these budget lists! Quick note for the mono green stompy deck: in the video you have Quirion Beastcaller, in the decklist you have Quirion Dryad. The first one makes a lot more sense 😉
i really like equipment for budget decks. although there are few flying threats being commonly run, a simple kitesail can get damage over the top in otherwise stalled out games. if you have a brand new account i think the best first 2 crafts should be singles of mirrex and eater of virtue. both can be slotted into any budget deck which helps to experiment with different colors. the eater may fall off in value as you get a large collection, but it was worth it as it helped you earn that collection!
Hi Dev I played your green stompy deck I was crushed a lot ok no problem I Upgraded actually the 4 mana slot with Doomskar Warrior to make it more aggressive it’s helping a lot :) love your content specially I am not so good In building decks so I always try out yours . Keep up the great work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I've always loved trying defender decks. This one is disgusting for my opponents and so fun to play. And it wins. Puts so many birds into play so fast haha. I swapped in desk from existence for borrow time.
Really enjoy your videos. Very entertaining. Cadira, caller of the small could be budget in commander if you run a lot of the new Hobbits. There are lots of boardwipes based on power/toughness that the Hobbits and tokens dodge. Ayesha Tanaka, Armorer could be a budget voltron commander, but admittedly, I haven't gotten the budget version of my deck to win very consistently Kyler is easier than ever to build around. So many dorks, card draw engines and pump all on a stick. I bet you could build a pretty good Jan Janson deck on a budget. Myr incubator is a solid win con with all the 1 damage etb triggers. Zada, hedron grinder is budget and kinda bad in a good way. Probably the most common budget deck I see is Henzie because many of the creatures are 4+ mana cost legendary bombs. And it's still probably the most fun to build around. Every new set I look for the best henzie budget cards and test them out. The amass feature heavily prevalent in the recent set isn't my preferred henzie play style, but it could work! Make a budget commander deck asap! P.s. remember that not all commander games are 3 and 4 players. Many are just 2 player and choosing cards that work well in both scenarios can be hard. My suggestion is to avoid commander "staples" and find creatures with nearly identical effects. I love my Kros, defense contractor commander deck but it rarely sees play. It doesn't work 1v1 and it kicks ass in 3 player commander.
So, 2 weeks later I'm playing with your Discard deck and, I like it, but it has some issues with consistency, which may be expected on a $5 budget. I just won a game doing nothing for about ten turns until I had all four copies of Corrupt in hand, and then fiiiiinally hitting a sixth land. Four turns in a row doing nothing but dropping corrupt for the win. I love this deck
If you want to challenge yourself, try making replacements for the free starter-decks on Arena. Ones that don't eat up tons of rare and mythic wildcards. They don't need to have enormous win-rates, but replacements so free-to-players aren't stuck using the same old, boring starter-decks for daily quests just to lose a bunch of games.
i just started playing mtg with my friends and i searched for a kitchen table casual deck that could be slightly competitive. I have a budget of 15/20€ and I found these decks: 1. Green-black incubate 2. mono green stompy 3. bw defenders 4. satyrs green red 5. blue white artifacts which is better according to you?
0:32 Chilling with family by avoiding their toxicity to instead play a fun but also often toxic game online? Sounds about right! Though Dev said paper as well and I've heard tales of mythical families who play MtG together and are even ... somewhat happy together?
So you've got me to harass all my friends to start playing with me again for the cheap! You said you didn't want to wait 1-1,5 years before doing another 5 for 5 and it has been 9 months now. Soooooo, when can we expect the next one?

4 Brotherhood's End (BRO) 128
4 Exuberant Fuseling (ONE) 129
2 Consider (MID) 44
1 Reject Imperfection (ONE) 67
4 Thirst for Discovery (VOW) 85
4 Thrummingbird (ONE) 72
It's not a meta breaking deck by any means but it packs a punch and streamrolls anyone who doesn't deal with the forge. Lots of spicy interactions, the shark works amazing with proliferate spells creating tokens that then grow bigger.
I'm sure this video is great and all, but I'm only a few minutes in and its one of the best magic uploads all year. Dev is in his zone on this one and he could be talking about anything and it'd be interesting 😂😂
Aether Vial is typically crucial for Modern Merfolk decks. Also, LOVE 5 for 5! Another commenter said it best: peak Dev!
This is my favorite. Should do it every couple of sets
Artistic Refusal is also really good in the defenders deck! You often have enough creatures to cast it for 1 or 2 mana and I've found it does a ton of work.
I also like larder zombie and knight eos to grab some creatures
This is my favorite series! Thank you! :D
Happy to see these back.
These videos are why I subscribed to his patreon tbh
That Rakdos list is neat, except that Urabrask Forge tokens aren't artifacts so you can't sack them to anvil. Putting in a Vraan, Executioner's Thane, does take advantage of the little buggers, and all-around fits very good in this sac deck.
These budget builds is how I found your channel years ago. Quality content Dev!
Best kind of SBMTG videos :)
Also, agreed. Do love me the intro song, the cats, and the notes on budget Standard decks
I tried them all for around 5-10 games each, here is my personal experience:
Mono green is surprisingly good, I won vs some meta decks too but enchantment decks and control decks were tough, nearly impossible oponents.
TLDR:
Mono green 6/10
Golgari toxic 8/10
Anvil 9/10
Defenders 3/10
Discard 0/10(sorry)
I need MORE 5 for 5$
These budget builds are Top Notch!!
First decks I'll buy in quiet some time. Should be a fun 30ish dollar game night. Thanks Dev!
BLESSED BE THIS DAY OF BUDGET
So glad to see this series return!
Yes! Long overdue! Thanks Dev!
First game with the defender deck and grinded it out to a mill win. Thank you Dev!!! Keep that Test Kitchen cooking.
Concealing curtains is also really good for discard. 1 black mana defender, that transforms and allows you to discard a creature card from their hand for 1 black 2 any.... Aaand it's a 3/4 menace.
We went from 4 azorius decks when you talked about this on stream to just 1 in the actual list and it wasn't the double striker for 2 😮
Awesome video, love these budget lists!
Keep up the great work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
aw yeah, my favourite sbmtg series :)
Dev!! You are the best! Been watching since like 2017 and you're one of my favorite TH-cam channels :)
Ayesha Tanaka, Armorer could be a budget voltron commander, but admittedly, I haven't gotten the budget version of my deck to win very consistently
Kyler is easier than ever to build around.
9:43 nice Poe reference
I would totally buy a "You can be evil on a budget shirt"
This is why I patreon Dev! This is my jam!
Hey, thanks for the content (:
It would be great to have an updated version
Any recommendationa on where to buy these cards ? Help would be very aprecciated since im new to the game
Man, according to that intro, I like a bunch of things. And he was right.
Surprised not to see blanchwood armor in the stumpy list
Ossification is a good upgrade for the Defenders deck. They are about a dollar.
My pauper heart soars.
I loved the Monty Python comment. Such a British insult
Kitty be like, man person keeps talking and I want out the door. He keeps talking. Door closed.
how about a video on 'the most versatile cards' someone with a new account might want to craft that can be slotted into every deck of that color
After a terrible day its great to laugh with you
I got to diamond playing jank WG artifact aggro with 3 x Nissa Planeswalker lol. Lots of lifegain, mono red is almost a free win every time.
Instead of Borrowed Time I'd honestly play 4 copies of Touch the Spirit Realm for fun end of turn blinking of the bird lady :D ♥
Little bit of a nonbo I think because it’s task forge doesn’t make artifact tokens. I keep thinking it does but they are just little phyrexian dudes.
5 for 5? What a great deal! Can’t pass that up
There he is
Awesome video, cool decks.
This was sick man
Came for the couch card)
I want to wear Chicken on my face like a sleep mask
@Strictlybettermtg Need to update the deck list you linked. Does not have the two flitting guerrilla.
i just started playing mtg with my friends and i searched for a kitchen table casual deck that could be slightly competitive. I have a budget of 15/20€ and I found these decks:
1. Green-black incubate
2. mono green stompy
3. bw defenders
4. satyrs green red
5. blue white artifacts
which is better according to you?
I love watching dev.
So put another card into standard, baby.
Walls deck needs Meeting of Minds
Unfortunately forge token is not an artifact dev,
thanks Dev : )
Nice decks!
Mustard on Magic cards? Chicken is trying to escape the blasphemy. 😀
0:32 Chilling with family by avoiding their toxicity to instead play a fun but also often toxic game online? Sounds about right! Though Dev said paper as well and I've heard tales of mythical families who play MtG together and are even ... somewhat happy together?
If you're my favorite magic channel's favorite magic channel, does that mean you are your own favorite magic channel?
Budget commander please!
Those who smelt, can make dealt, 3 damage per turn. 😂
I came for Ziggy...
YESSS
Hell yes
I love these so much, good job as always Dev!
Kicking myself for trading in a phyrexian text sheoldred I pulled so that I could use the money to buy more packs. Smh
600 AD
Budget magic time?
love this content, yaay.
🤘🏻
🥰
So you've got me to harass all my friends to start playing with me again for the cheap! You said you didn't want to wait 1-1,5 years before doing another 5 for 5 and it has been 9 months now. Soooooo, when can we expect the next one?
First comment, 5th like. 😄
