I had to peel 10 pounds of potatoes last week for our thanksgiving dinner and for those 30+ minutes I felt like a real life hoof trimmer. I carefully investigated the bruised areas and only trimmed what was necessary and then I carefully dug out any rotten spots as if they were a sole ulcer. Needless to say my wife thinks I’m 100% insane.

I grew up on a farm during the 40s thru the 60s, and the barn was to me a magical place. I was probably in middle school when my dad woke all of us up in the wee hours of the morning. He told us to put on some clothes that could get dirty and high-tail it to the barn. One of the cows was having a terrible time giving birth. My dad had tied a rope around the calf’s front feet, and my grandpa, mother, older sister, younger brother, and I were able to pull that calf out! We were all surprised that both the mother and her calf survived. We spent many happy summer hours petting the kittens in the barn.

or would you rather they live healthy free-range lives, with all the room and food they could ever need? you should be grateful that these farmers exist to give them a better life than the ones that are kept inside buildings next to each other all day, every day, until they are killed, just to save room. if these animals are going to be raised for food anyways, they at the very least deserve to have a good life before then.

Thank you for fixing her up! Yes, a beautiful job well done! I just heard this and thought that I'd share it with you:
"Cow's have hooves because they lactose."
    :D you're welcome!

I've been watching your videos for over a year now, and I know the work you'll put here with this cow will be magnific. There's a question now in my head though, how can farmers prevent these incidents from happening with their cows? They always happen to have really terrible bruises or horn malformations after a while.

I really enjoyed this video. I like the videos where you don't play music over everything and we can quietly enjoy the details of the trim. very nice!

My uncle was a large animal veterinarian in Uruguay, South America. I did not know about hoof trimming when he was alive. Now I wonder if he ever did it as part of caring for cows and horses.

So satisfying how soft the hoof is. Knife goes through it like butter.

Well done, Graeme you are thorough; you take your time to get to the root of the problem and you use your experience, wisdom and compassion to do what you know to be right for the animal.

Woah I finally get it! I thought that high hoof height was because it was growing more. But it makes so much sense that it’s not being used and thus not being worn down!!!

Yes hoof trims cAn be beautiful (and are) especially if you're helping to heal injuries. Too bad they aren't able to show you appreciation for what you do for them. Cows are gems.

  • @wolfsdream499

I'm always amazed what a cows hoof can handle! If you had to trim away that much on a horse, the hoof would needed to be bandaged (and the horse probably stalled) for weeks if not two or more months!
But then there isn't another claw you can put a block on...
