  • Lowe’s versus Home Depot - are two of the leading home improvement retailers in the world. We are going to talk about how you identify great businesses, and Colton will go over the Financial Statements to help determine which of these two companies has the stronger financial situation, I am going to look at it from the perspective of which is the best value.
Just because we cover a company in a video, does not mean that we are recommending them. What we are doing is we are trying to give you lessons on valuation and lessons on investing. We are going to try to determine which is the better company, and also determine when is a good time to invest in the company. It’s not enough to know the best company, you also have to be able to buy the best company at the right valuation, or an attractive valuation, because valuation matters, and it matters a lot.

If I may make a suggestion as far as the spread sheet presentation of the information, instead of switching back and forth in the spread sheet and relying on your vocal ques to know which one you are talking about, my suggestion would be to combine them on one sheet with opposing colors to represent the comparison. Orange for HD and Blue for LOW, think it would make a much more easily understood comparitive model. I appreciate your work (Colt and Chuck), just my opinion - for what it is worth.

Been accumulating Lowe’s the past year around $200/share. Planning to continue adding on pullbacks and hold for a decade+

I really enjoy the financial statement analysis sections from Colton. One thing to consider for HD and LOW is the potential distortions to operating performance from the pandemic over the last few years which might limit some of the takeaways that should be drawn from just looking at the financials from the last 3 years.

Thanks for the valuable video. I bought into Lowe's a good year ago. Back then the balance sheet was bad but not quite that bad yet. Didn't look at it in the last quarters. Not gonna lie, I really hate that they loaded up on debt to buy back shares in a time of rising interest rates. And the valuation in that time period was fair, not cheap. Makes absolutely no sense to me. I took a 10% profit and sold my position.

I have both LOW and HD in my portfolio - LOW makes up a larger % of my portfolio at roughly 4% and HD makes up about 2.7% - I like to own both, mainly for the duopolistic aspects of the businesses, but have concentrated more on LOW as the payout ratio is lower resulting in higher dividend growth and yields on cost - additionally, since the appointment of their new CEO, I like their long term growth strategy of focusing on the professional contractor market (their business is mostly DIY consumers at 75% and pro contractors at 25%) and they are increasing their offerings to this pro contractor segment to gain market share from Home Depot in this category (results in more reliable, consistent and often larger revenue sources) - In terms of the debt, the annual EBITDA generated is enough to pay the debt back within 3 years so less of a concern to me - I would actually prefer them to start paying it down now instead of buying back shares constantly but I digress - I’ll make a full video on them this Sunday as well to show my conviction as to why l like LOW better than HD 👍- Great Video Chuck 👍

Thanks for sharing. I too own both. I try to gauge consumer traffic by visiting both quite often. The Lowe's card gives me 5% off and the store is closer. But sometimes Home Depot has a better sale going. I'll keep dollar cost averaging into both

I had to replace the water heater last year. Got a quote from HD and just to be sure got one from Lowes as well later. Lowes quoted 15% higher (both companies quoted with use their own private brand water heaters similar in most aspects). Obviously I got the HD contractor to install the next day. Lowes contacted me a few weeks later asking me reason for not using them and promised me a gift card if I can provide the invoice for competing bid that I used. I did. Six months later not a peep from them. Two hits for Lowes on service.

What a good informative video! Although HD might be better equipped BS-wise I think Lowe's has the more attractive valuation and future outlook in sales/earnings as their numbers aren't as high and can bet increased at higher rates than at HD. I own Lowe's and am waiting for another drop to buy in again. I really enjoyed Colton's comparison. Normally, looking at the BS and CF statements isolatedly can be boring as there is no benchmark for orientation. But these two companies fit perfectly for this analysis.

Great video. Some discussion of whether to let quality or valuation lead for a buy-and-hold investor would be useful. Is it best to go for the best company or the one on sale, if there's a case like this? The perpetual dilemma.

Colt needs to put the name of the company on the 1st row of his spreadsheets, so as he is jumping from one company to the other, it is clear to the viewer which company is being presented

As a teacher with 35 years on the deck, (don't hold it against me) when it comes to presentation, people like colours....In this case, maybe use and orange font for HD and blue for low....Set the data up in side by side vertical columns and use the power point option to pop the numbers into blank spaces. Then have a third column where an orange or yellow X or checkmark indicate which company looks better according to that particular variable...In this example, when comparing debt, you'd have the respective numbers in their columns and then either an orange check in column 3 or just HD-but in orange....There's my unsolicited advice....you guys are tops....Think about DLR vs Equinox....thanks
