I was 14 when this episode came out and definitely watched it live with my mother. It was our tradition to watch all ANTM episodes together. My mother is Native American and I remember her saying "what the fuck" out loud with the most bizarrely confused look on her face. I remember all the girls at school talking about it though and no one seemed to think it was problematic at the time. Absolutely wild! I remember being so surprised when it came back several seasons later in a different way. Tyra was always up to some insane stuff. I also vividly remember an episode of her talk show about furries that is burned into my brain from how wildly exploitative it was.
It's funny how this is so offensive yet Beyonce has bleached her skin n been 'white-facing' her whole career, n yall call her 'queen' . Michelle ended up having a staph infection. I didn't have it as bad as her, but it was on my face in HIGH SCHOOL of all times so that was really cool, really fun lmao. We naturally have staph just chillin on our skin and if we have an abrasion, it can get infected in the right circumstances. I felt so so bad for her because I had literally dealt with it maybe 2 years before I saw this episode as it was airing 😭 definitely so should not share makeup brushes, clothing, etc and be careful to not touch your face and then surfaces/others while it's active. They really should've had her at a doctor ASAP. Staph on the scalp or near the eyes can be dangerous. Glad she ended up being okay.

"Survivor" divided contestants into tribes based on race and ethnicity. "Big Brother" had a lot of racial tension too. I swear I remember other one-off "social experiments" episodes on various shows involving "race swapping" with make up as well. So this kind of felt like part of an overall trend.
