not Jessica being in America’s Next Top Photographer 😭😂
crying
Oh I’d watch that!
Can’t believe this happened in 2018 and you never mentioned it!!😂
ikr!
Yes I feel betrayed lmfao
WAIT THIS WASN’T ON MY 2024 BINGO CARD. Plot Twist for the ages.
"oh by the way guys I casually met nigel" you have been sitting on this information for surprisingly long!
I find!
This wasn’t a judging, this was mentorship.
Great job!!!!!!
Girl, what?! My jaw dropped when I saw this upload lmao
Nigel gonna be like “I have one photo in my hand, and only one person will move forward to become Americas Next Top Photographer, Jessica, you are a survivor, and you can survive this, you are going home…..”
😂🤣
Hahahaha
NOT THE TYRA LINE 😭😭😭
hahahhaaha
😂😂😂❤
Somehow Jessica is now part of the ANTM universe 😭
Nigel seemed a lot nicer here than he did on Top Model. I like it! Beautiful photo, Jessica!
According to the contestants; he was actually a lot nicer when cameras weren’t rolling.
Producers of reality tv ask you to play up/make more intense or dramatic your personality lol. Firsthand experience.
@@parasol3561 That actually makes sense.
@@jamilgotcher365 Yeah, that checks out. We really need to come up with another name for reality TV, because it's really anything BUT reality!
nicer and very knowledgeable. I feel like a lot of the criticism on ANTM was kind of distilled down for a wider audience, and of course tinged with hypocrisy because they were constantly having to make the "narrative" of the season make sense.
Nigel saying “it doesn’t mean I’m right” about his opinion has me shook! This whole video had me shook tho honestly lol 😂 GIRL!!
Maybe because he is surrounded by peers. He is very different around Tyra banks
Nigel's critique is much more professional than he was on the ATNM
Shows how they probably asked him to be more dramatic in judging
I really like when he said "you need to own it" because at multiple points in your own explanation of the shot you said "i wasn't sure". I think he was telling you not just to be aware of the conditions, but also to trust your own eye there. very cool.
The funny thing is I would watch America's Next Top Photography. 😂
The landscape, skyscraper, and model episode would be fire. 😅😊
I would too but i watch literally any show like that. The fashion ones, make up, and even the body painting competition, the glass blowing one, the weapons making one.
What in the twilight zone
GIRLL WHAT IS THIS IM CRYING 😭😭IT FELT LIKE A MULTIVERSE
8:00 "BE QUIET JESSICA, BE QUIET! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? STAAHHP IT!... I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU... WE ARE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!..."
😂😂😂 definately that moment personified.
you are only sharing this now? this is a treasure .. awesome photo by the way,
This feels like contents from a different jessiverse
Aw Jessica I love that he loved your photo!
Could you please invite Nigel into your show? Like how you invite Keenyah.
Talk about that workshop experience, his experience on ANTM and his new POV on your work.
She’s dragged him too much. Them judges are the opps so I doubt it 😂
Yeah no, she’s already criticized him and ANTM way too much 😂. Even if he agreed, it would be way too awkward and he’d probably try to get jabs in at Jessica at any point he could.
Never going to happen. The judges on the show have done nothing but backpedal and make excuses for all the horrible things that have happened. They're never going to sit down with someone who has critiqued them or answer questions about the show where they actually have to answer for anything. Even if they are nice off the show
hearing you talk about how proud and accomplished you feel looking back on this is soooo wholesome
Wait...this is a plot twist I didn't expect. 😂😂😂
The way I jumped, cartwheel, windmilled to this video 😂
Amazing that you interacted with Nigel, first of all! I'm shook. Secondly, this made me realize how much I'd love to watch a photography competition in the style of antm!
First time seeing this guy, and I like him! I love how he started off saying he is not the "end all be all" judge of the work. So many other teachers try to make you their version of you. It's refreshing to hear the way he talks about the work of others. This is a teacher who can really teach and inspire.
I love the image. The "imperfect" parts of it are what make it so beautiful to me. Well done!
Your reaction at 4:25 is pretty priceless. You are absolutely beaming with pride and it is so well deserved! You should feel very proud! What an amazing thing it is watching Nigel's immediate reaction to your photo after watching you critique so many of his! You have every reason to be proud of yourself!!
Clicked as soon as I saw it!!!
It's true that sometimes unintentional photos are the ones that are captured the best. I've got a few shots that I did before without deliberation and they turned out to be my favourite.
And it's always nice to have validation from people in the same industry to recognize your work. It always make people to want to work better and hone the skills into next level..
The amount of pride that I feel when I see creatives that I admire receiving the validation and positive reinforcement they deserve, is so overwhelming. I feel my chest swell and I’m so happy for them and proud of them, even though I had nothing to do with it. But I feel it every time. I am so happy for you that you got this powerful feedback and thank you for sharing with us Jessica. You fricken rock.
GIRL HOW DID YOU HOLD ONTO THIS FOR SO LONG?? I'M LOSING IT OVER HERE!
That photo really is so gorgeous💛💛💛
"I guess now I have to go shoot a PRADA campaign... Right after buying cat litter..." love it! 😂😂
This was so adorable to watch. I loved that you showed your emotions and were vulnerable. I’m sure others understand how great it feels to be valued by someone in your field that is very stressful and someone you look up to. Makes you feel proud of all the work you’ve put in all those years. Thanks for sharing Jessica
I’ll be honest I have seen that photo on the internet before I got into your channel and thought it was a high fashion campaign
oh my gosh this is so crazy but awesome! I can't believe this happened before your top model reactions
I would DEFINITELY love to see some behind the scenes shoots of some professional fashion photography from you. Like you collabing with brands, you gotta get out there and make it happen girl! lol I'm rooting for you :)
That has always been my favorite shot of yours! I have always been so impressed with how amazing you captured that lighting
This is so cool! I love that you took that awesome photo in my hometown ❤ I really love the way Nigel delivered his feedback and shared his expertise here. What a great critique and unforgettable moment!
That is so awesome! He really did give good advice, and it's always nice to see when you are on the right track in your work, and that photo you chose was amazing!
WOW. Jessica had her work critiqued by Nigel Baker. I am impressed 😎🤯📸💰💸
Congratulations on the positive feedback from Nigel.
You are one step closer to your dream.
Girl I’ve been waiting for your to release this story!!! Omg!!!! So proud of you! ✨
Accepting imperfection is a great lesson to learn in any creative field.
I learned lighting in the early 1970s assisting Monte Zucker, then one of the top wedding photographer/ teacher / author in the US who wrote a monthly column on wedding photography in the Professional Photographer magazine and taught at the PPofA school and conventions.
I got the job by cutting down all my painstakingly printed and matted Zone System prints after he had critiqued each of them in a way I’d never seen before. He took a pair of L-shaped black mat board cropping guides which he pulled in tight on the faces and other focal points in the photos and slowly expanded the frame asking me to tell him when I saw anything which distracted from the focal point enter the frame. It made me realize that when composing the photo and when printing it I had let myself get ‘tunnel vision’ on the subject and tuned out the distractions! My twenty 11x14 prints dry mounted on 18% gray 16x20 mats became a collection of borderless 8x10, 5x7 and for one photo of a disconnected couple two separate 4x5 individual portraits.
What I learned about lighting from him was that it is CONTRAST with the background tone that creates a ‘magnetic’ attraction and tunnel vision in photographs and any form of art. What makes a ‘low key’ portrait pull the attention of the viewer to the FRONT of the face is using a lighting pattern which creates a “mask” of highlights on the FRONT of the face and keeps the sides in shadow. Clothing plays a role in this because if it contrasts more with the background than the highlights on the FRONT of the face on background darker than the skin it will DISTRACT. That is why he always had clothing consultation with his subjects and had them wear clothing with tone and color darker than caucasian skin but lighter than the dark background.
What to do with a subject in a white dress? Put them on a white background the dress will not contrast with and use a low ratio lighting ratio with key and fill identical strength to avoid dark (distracting) shadows on the face. On a neutral white background COLOR CONTRAST and light neutral or cool-tone pastel clothing becomes the most effective way to make the FRONT of the face the thing that contrasts the most. For a full face portrait I will use a centered ‘butterfly’ pattern with lights as far away as I can get them for soft front-to-back gradients with the higher key light creating the mask pattern of highlights (and specular highlight 3D shape clues) with reflectors on both sides of the face just out of frame to make the FRONT of the face darker and warmer and the sides blend into the background.
It is more difficult to shoot ‘high key’ (i.e. white background) portraits in B&W because you lose the ability to create contrast with color. For that reason it is easier to created that ‘magnetic’ attraction and ‘tunnel vision’ on a dark background with a subject in dark clothing using a “short” key lighting strategy with it 45° to the far side of the nose and 90° to the camera axis in an oblique view of the race or 45° from the nose and 135° from camera axis for a perfectly split ‘penny’ profile.
In my first professional print competition and the MD State PPofA convention in 1973 I entered a photo of a black stage actor I’d taken in college giving an angry ‘black power’ salute with raised fist. It was very low key but with high compelling contrast on his face and raised fist. I mounted it with three tones of gray construction paper which made it look was mounted on a 3D box and titled it “Stand Up!” One of the judges was Jay Maisel very successful commercial photographer. I took home the trophy for “Most Creative Photo” because of the way the contrast of the highlights on the face pulled the eye to the face then up the arm to the raised fist then back down to the face repeatedly creating “hang time” and a strong impression in the mind of the judges.
This was a principle I also learned from Monte about contrast and eye path in photos. If the face contrasts strongly with the background the eye of the viewer will go there first, but where do you the photographer want it to go next and will the attention return to the face or will the viewer decide they’ve seen enough? This is where relative contrast and the use of negative space become factors in composition and ‘hang time’ attention span of the viewer or judge. It is why the Rule of Thirds works so well in art IF the focal point also contrasts well with the background. The contrast pulls the eye across the context in the 2/3 of the frame it takes to get there and then creates so much negative space the eye isn’t tempted to wander off it UNLESS SOMETHING ELSE CONTRASTS and attracts the eye.
In my photo of the actor the face and fist created a ‘ping-pong’ linear eye path. Even better is when three elements in the photo which have a contrast gradient between them create a triangular eye path which in a portrait you can create with arms and hands to lead the eye of the viewer form contrasting face, down one arm to the hands - which need to be doing something interesting adding context to the subject; i.e, carpenter holding hammer, MD holding stethoscope, architect holding plans, etc. - then back up the other arm back to the face. The more interesting the stuff in the hands is the more likely the viewer will take a second trip “around the bases” and that’s what makes a composition a ‘home run’ 😊
THIS IS SO COOL! Long time fan of YOU!! I love how you put yourself out there and that you advocate creative accidents and happy failures! Showing your journey is so encouraging. I draw portraiture (background in conceptual photog) and it helps me rethink the face and the lighting etc. Keep going! You can totally shoot editorial add campaigns! You have such a wonderful color sensibility and the way you shoot!! (You SHOULD be teaching classes on that because of the level of RESPECT you show. The amount of magnificent compositions and poses you are able to capture reflect your process of care and point of view. I hope to have a coffee table book of your work one day :) sorry for the essay, but this was a joy to watch, Ty from the east coast!!
Found out about your photography through Irene Rudyk's "LA Vlog" where you, Irene and Ruby shot your "3 Photogs shoot the same model", and been following you and your work ever since 🙌
It feels so good to get praise for a photo, like winning a local contest or being allowed to show at the local gallery. I can only imagine how amazing it felt to get Nigel's feedback (I get excited for classmates' critique!)
I feel so proud of you! such a great picture, love it
Hey my dear this is the sweetest thing to watch. And seeing you say that you love photography and you being able to work in the thing that brings you joy. It’s just so exciting.
And also as an artist hearing him, say that you need to learn how to re-create this, that had me shook. Because sometimes I think of art as magic. And I’m like, but how can I re-create magic? It was magic! I’m just a vessel! So I’m sitting with that notion of being aware of specifically what I would need to do to re-create what happened on that “magical” night. That is blowing my mind. Thank you for this, my dear.
Omg! This is so special. Thanks for sharing ❤️
I’m so happy you had this experience ❤ Thank you for sharing this! These videos really inspire me to want to develop as a photographer 😊😌
Never clicked so fast
I'm so traumatized from critiques, your so brave for putting your image in front of him!
That's always been my favourite of all of your photos. Love this for you!
aw, I actually really like what Nigel said, at the beginning and what he had to say about your picture. congrats on really good feedback! its well deserved!
Wow! Love this video! This was very cool and love being able to see two very skilled people talking about this!
He was actually so nice! And I mean your work is beautiful - hands down, but his words sound so empowering!
I’ve been a big fan of your work for many-many years and seeing you also being on the right side of the history warms my heart 🍉
Jess I have a story with Nigel too ahah!!! Not sure if I have ever told you. 5-6 years ago when I was just starting out I had like a second portrait shoot in my entire life but I was SO PROUD of the photos!!! I used to watch Tony and Chelsey Live shows where invited guests would review the photos and one of them was set to be with Nigel... ofc I sent one of the portraits I took!!! To my surprise he DID review it. He didn't say anything bad (cheers to him) but he also kinda said it's nothing special (which it was tbh) but it gave me such a KICK to start creating more and more! Kudos to him!❤
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMMENT ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
This is how I felt when you critiqued my worked once, I still treasure that video and it's near to my heart. You are so amazing and inspiring Jessica! We all love you! ♡
This is proof that reality TV land warps and ruins people. This was great! It was good to see Nigel in a setting where I didn’t want to punch him. I bet he’s especially careful since ANTM.
I absolutely love your commentaries. I believe I may have watched all of the ANTMs. Your comments are so witty and engaging, sometimes I just have to LOL!. I also love your critique of the model poses and the photographers' direction or lack thereof.
Jessica, I am so happy for you! Prada campaigns are best when controlling shadows and shades. Your photos also captured that feeling and atmosphere. So proud of you!❤
this photo is MAJESTIC I love the lighting so much!
Good work. You are a truly talented photographer. I'm not a portrait or fashion photographer by any stretch of the imagination, but I do appreciate talent and passion as a teacher who wants the best for my students. Again, great job.
Nigel's advice to own your work really sticks out to me. Owning your work is so important, but also so hard to do sometimes, especially as a woman who is a professional creative (I can seriously relate - the imposter syndrome is real sometimes). It's clear that you have a lot of talent and have developed some incredible skills over the years, so I'm glad Nigel recognizing and acknowledging that gave you the validation you needed to know you're killin' it.
Such an iconic moment, Jessica ate that up ✨.
Nigel and all those associated with ANTM creates such second-hand anxiety.
That was great, that you so much for sharing. I really loved all of his insights.
Girl stop, your photos are beautiful. My top 5 photographers fo sho
I agree with your first instinct of the lighting.. it's obviously very beautiful and her eyes pop, but the lighting contrast doesn't feel intentional. I love you and follow you! Do you girl!
OMG! I came as soon as I saw your IG story!!!
Jessica getting heated over the person coughing is such a mood. How dare they?! 😂
What a twist😮😮❤❤ love this!
Full circle moment. I am happy for you Jessica!
2:14 It’s Jessica-ception
Massive respect to Nigel Barker a master in the field of Photography. Love the photo Jessica🙌

And you understand beauty and u get to capture it everyday and that’s why I love your channel. lol and the fact that I ❤ top model. lol but no for really tho!!! I’ve watched the other videos u do and u guys do great work! It’s very very aspirational I promise!
Oh how the turn tables! 😂
Your hair looks absolutely gorgeous here.
Magnifique! *chefs kiss*
It truly is a beautiful photograph.
That photo is so captivating. Very good job, just wow.
Not me seeing my sister in a TH-cam video 😅 I remember her telling me she met you in that class!!
“Look at you Jessica” 😂
1) this is a crossover i never expected and 2) the way you've been holding out on us with thiiiis omg. 2018??!?!??!
AHHHH This is so cool girlieeee
I genuinely believe Nigel is a nice person. Its just that the atmosphere in antm is extremely negative. When you expose someone to negative energy, you start becoming negative yourself. Tyra exudes that mean, bully, know-it-all, negative person who likes to think she's better than all the people around her.
Girl! This is so cool!
„Maybe Europe, maybe London or Paris” I was waiting for Milan and Rome, because we all know that’s it this is EUROPE 😂😂 so proud of you Jessica you deserved it all ❤
yessss you manifested this
Jessica, you are America's Next Top Photographer!!!! You're very talented!!!❤
You go girl
Great photo! To me, it’s reminiscent of a 1960s model in swinging London. Beautiful.
That's awesome!😮
That is a great photo!
I thought this title was clickbait and oh my god! This is amazing!!
I love his work so much. I’ve not stepped behind the lens in so so so so long 😔
