I've not been able to play due to losing a fingertip 2 years ago. But I have that same love for making things that you exhibit. I've developed a love for dulcimer (must be my hillbilly DNA). get a detachable pickup and an amp
You can get them made with several types of electronic pickups; and then you just run them through an amp.
