  • Historians seem to disagree on what the first musical instrument was nor when it was created. However, one thing is certain, music has been instrumental in the development of mankind. Closer to home and much more recently, Tennessee Crossroads met a fellow in east Tennessee who continues a musical tradition that's played an important role in the settlement of the state. Join Nashville Public Television's Tennessee Crossroads to find out more.

I recently developed a fascination with woodworking because I'd like to become a dulcimer luthier just like him.

In the Greater Memphis area - and beyond - there are a few dulcimers made by the late, great Robert L. Dickey. He was my wife's father.

What a wonderful article! Mike and Connie Clemmer, and their employees are so welcoming and willing to answer questions they must have heard a million times. That patience and love of sharing music is exactly what comes through with Mike's instruments.

5:47 what are those two instruments? The one on the right looks like an acoustic bass guitar with extra thick gut strings, the one on the left looks like the same thing but with thinner, metal strings. However, you would have a hard time playing the one on the left like a traditional guitar because the sound board goes up all along the fretboard, making it hard to use your left hand to do chords...
