I oil my wooden spoons when I oil my wooden butcher block counter top. Boy can you tell a difference when they are done. But this is a great reminder to get it done!
Thank you for showing us this, I regularly oil my cutting board but have never thought about my wooden utensils, will definitely be doing this regularly. 😊
Thanks for reminding me to get busy!!!
I am many decades older than you. I have always oiled my wooden cook tools. I use olive oil. I let them soak in a narrow cylinder. I do use a dishwasher on mine at and at times bleach to sanitize. Wood spoons today are far different than the ancient ones I use. I have one large one of unknown wood that I have my husband sand regularly. I think it is oak and has a raised grain.
Thank you for sharing this. A smart reminder to oil my wooden spoons. You are appreciated.
I will keep this in mind about wooden utensils.
_{has a "Now why didn't I think of doing that" moment_ 🤦 _}_ I would never even have thought of oiling the wooden utensils, so this is a *really* handy tip 😃👏
Thank you Tina for sharing this, I've got some dry looking wooden spoons and spatulas, so I know what I'll be doing later on today 😀👍
I hope you got all those spoons done!
Lol happy to give you more work.
I did, they came out looking good too. Now the cheapy shop spoons look as good as the more expensive ones 😀 (if only everything in life could be made to look more expensive by just doing this to it).
lol 😂 It was good easy work, and the results were well worth it, so feel free to dish out work any time you want 😃👍
Now only if my husband would say that 😂
lol 😂
@@macf4426That's a great comment. That's why the word 'oiling' is also used as a coinage probably. Or the famous saying, 'Oil your own machine.' Oil is so useful in so many ways to uplift our life.
OMGoodness I just thought this morning I need to google this!!! Thanks so much!! I’m practicing making my own wooden utensils.
Oh that sounds fun!
thanks for this. I do have a collection of wooden kitchenwares which I bought a couple of years ago. I wipe them with mineral oil or any cooking oil to protect and make them look brand new.
What a great idea!
This is the first video I've seen on this. I've oiled my wooden utensils since I received a wood cutting board and learned it needed oiled. I use Olive oil and actually soak them for a day or 2. Great video!
Olive oil can go rancid after a while. Mineral oil from the drug store is best.
I don't know why I never thought to do this. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy the day! Catherine
Thank you, it makes sense ! Totally unaware ! Great reminder. Love your channel !
I’m glad I’m not the only one that does this!!
Your not alone sister.
Thanks for this - I didn't know coconut oil was ok here, I've only used the bottled stuff and haven't done this in ages since I never remember to buy another bottle! Now tm has a new job.
Thanks!! Good info..
I don't have that many wooden spoons left as they end up broken after me using them on my counter to count out my temper 😡 I will get control of my emotions or have a nice like of kindling. Thank for the demo Tina 👍
Yeah might want to work that. Not good for health or your kitchen.
Lol
Wood also does not melt and put nearly the level of toxicity as an insane approach such as quite meltable plastic. Thanks
Love my wooden utensils - they require maintenance and I don't use them for poultry or really any meat. Have one board for the Christmas rib roast - these wood board's are work. We went to France a few years ago - came back with some wood kitchen tools and when my husband broke the spoon (I took a deep breath) - I was mad and hid them and now, only for my use! Love your video's All the best.
If that was me. I may have hit the husband the broken spoon.
I received a Set of Wooden Utensils for Christmas and it said to treat them with Food Grade Mineral Oil. I purchased some today from the Pharmacy Section of a Store.I plan on using it tomorrow.
Hope it turned out well
@Wilhelms Kitchen If you agree food grade mineral oil is a better solution and that coconut oil (if not most cooking oils) goes rancid, perhaps remove this video because you are then misinforming your viewers.
Great tips, TFS
treat wood as you do cast iron...never thought of it that way. very good idea.
If you care for them they keep for a long time. Same as cast iron
New subscriber. I must admit I did not know to do this. Question: Does the oil attract dust if utensils are left in utensil holder on counter-top, and does the wood get sticky after a while? Please forgive me if this is a silly question.
Hello and welcome
No more then normal. Because the oil is absorbed into the wood. You need to wipe off any extra.
It’s not a silly question.
@@wholesome.heartfelt Thanks! Going to make sure I do this now!
K
I regularly oil my cutting board, but it never occurred to me to oil my spoons...lol. Makes sense. I don't like how rough sp,e pf them can get, so I can see where oiling them would help. I also never thought of using coconut oil. Will have to give this a try. Thanks for the tip!
Most people forget about them.
I have never oiled my wooden utensils, but now I will. Q: "Will coconut oil go rancid"? I use food grade mineral oil on my butcher block cart. TFS.😊
I have never had it go rancid on me. But use what you use. Nothing is set in stone when it comes to this.
I'm just not familiar with coconut oil. But I appreciate your video because I truly NEVER thought to oil my utensils, but will now. Thanks so much.😃👍
I never knew this. I already have one that is cracking and I wish I knew this before.
Hi. How often do you oil your wooden utensils?
Once every couple of months. When I notice they need it.
@@wholesome.heartfelt thank you :D
I've made some red oak japanese spatulas, I was advised to put mineral oil or tung oil on them, would red oak be ok to put coconut oil on?
I've looked everywhere for advice but haven't found any.
I wish I could answer you on this. This is only up keep. I would try finding that first or maybe someone else can give you an answer on that
Do some research on beeswax; I've heard good things about that for preserving wooden utensils.
would you do this when you first bring them home?
Yes. Give them a good wash then fully dry, then oil.
Korean chop Sticks?
Sorry, but IMO Bamboo is vastly more confortable
Hi, i just used coconut oil on my new beech spatula after i washed and dried it first. So after a couple of days, every time i touch the spatula my hands still come off greasy from it. Anybody have any tips to get rid of the greasiness?
You have to buff in the oil.
You rub it until it dry to touch
Wilhelms Kitchen i tried buffing it in with a paper towel as well :( could i have applied too much?
Oh I think so.
You can wash them with hot soapy water. Use a brush to help get it off.
Only do this when the wood looks dry. If you spatula doesn’t look dry it will not absorb the oil.
Wilhelms Kitchen ohh ok I’ll try that :) thanks!
This was awesome Tina.. How often should I oil the wooden spoons I have..
When you see they are dry looking.
Shouldn't be mineral oil?
not everyone is able to use or find it. This is is another option.
I'd rather use a natural product as opposed to one derived from petroleum. Thanks!
You are so welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
What is price in USA
No idea
Doesn't this leave your spoons smelling like coconut? And would not that smell be transferred to your food?
I cook with a lot of coconut oil so I’ve never noticed.
But there is a coconut oil that has no smell or taste.
@@wholesome.heartfelt Is there no chance of the oil going rancid?
Doing this is no different than seasoning your cast iron.
@@wholesome.heartfelt In that case would you say it would be safe to use coconut oil on a wooden cutting board?
My family and I are visiting friends/ family in Africa. I just got them a new wooden cutting board. Unfortunately I cannot seem to locate any food grade mineral oil therefore am I seeking a substitute.
I would make sure they have no coconut allergies. But I can’t see why not.
