First time learning shona. but the vowels are exactly the same as in the Swahili language. gives me tremendous hope that i can learn shona and teach Swahili to the shona people. i will go and live in Zimbabwe one day
I hope I get to learn some African languages in my lifetime . I'm black but not Zimbabwean (I'm West Indian originally from Trinidad) , but I'm interested in foreign languages.I saw a Shona dictionary a few years ago in an NYC library .I wish I'd read it. I will watch more of your videos.
I speak Spanish and English; I also know a little Quechua (Runasimi) and Esperanto. My friend has been in love with mbira music for the last 20 years. Now she wants to teach mbira and Zimbabwean dance and song. I told her I'd pay her for singing lessons. So now I'm learning Shona pronunciation, so I can try singing. I'm so lucky that Shona vowels are identical to Spanish vowels! 😁
Interestingly shona surnames are much more similar to Spanish and Portuguese surnames like Maduro , Sinyoro(sinori) , Mina, Maritina(martina) , Furashishko(fransisco), the list is endless , I think sShona people share something deep with Spanish people and Moroccans , our music sounds like Spanish Latino , our beats from guitars and dances ,
Hi, these videos are really helping. Looking to go out to Zimbabwe to live with my wife (she is from Zim) to work in the community. More lessons please.
Please continue with this series when you have some time again. I went through it a few years ago but because of not knowing enough Shona people I ended up not practicing and forgetting everything, well, almost everything. I understand it takes a lot to make one video and edit it, but if you can find the time, you'll be doing those of us who are like me, a huge favour.
Thanks for the lesson! I may be working with some Zimbabweans in my near future, so I'd like to pick up some Shona. Your Baba example sounded like more of a tone difference than a vowel difference, am I hearing that wrong?
Just came across your videos very enjoyable. Trying to pick up some Shona because of a girl haha. Just think it would be nice to be able to speak with her in her native language.
I was born In Zimbabwe and I moved to England when I was 5 years old and I didn’t get to learn Shona and I want to speak to my cousins and the rest of my family in Shona
Shona has different versions my brother it's not the Same even exams they write separate papers there's Manika , Ndau , ZeZuru , Kalanga among others. One that shares direct Aura, authenticity and shares words even with Zulu is Zezuru , language spoken mainly in Harare and surrounding provinces , it's exactly same vowels also Ndau and and Manica Kalanga is a mix with Venda and Tswana language or Sotho so much common things
Not sure if you’re still on TH-cam , but I’m having trouble learning how to pronounce the Shona name: (Nyarai) .. any tips on how to break it down to pronounce properly? Thanks!
@@St0ckwell That's not true at all. Take this name for instance. She is a famous south African actress her name is written as Liteboho Molise but when you speak it's pronounced as Diteboho MoDise. The Ls are pronounced as Ds. It's a Lesotho thing. Thank me later😎
I spent my childhood age11 in Harare Stanley avenue rotan road five years and return back my dad to India 1989 it's golden period for us never forget memories in my life I love too much Zimbabwe and theirs people
@@sandrasandy6705 ohh that's great. I was asking because I'm Zimbabwean, Shona speaking, and just wanted to know where you intend to use Shona language since it's a regional language. Many people I've seen who learn Shona do so because they'll be married to Shona-speaking partners, or planning to visit Zimbabwe.
your videos are very helpful, you do a great job breaking everything down. Question, when you say Shona you aren't pronouncing it with the same pronunciation as the first video taught with the vowels, what is this correct pronunciation of the language itself? thanks again :)
Hi Sir, thank you so much. I have a question on one pronounciation, "ko". In South African pronouciation, "ko" is split in two, your "ko'" is "kho" [Zulu], in Pedi the same, however the "o" can sound like "u", which may sound like "khu" instead to a pedi speaker, and well the principle is closely aligned to others, however, Afrikaans speakers would need further breakdown, as we don't treat English vowels as English but as native languages, which are borrowed a lot from the khoi-San languages. Even Khoi itself is a Nguni language, hence K[h]oi, instead of "koi" which are two different words. Please clarify that part with regards to Shona, as I believe somehow, Shona relates to the same vowel rules as Venda
I always tell people this. When you are not familiar with the language it sounds more foreign but digging deeper makes it easy because it is a Bantu language.
Xhosas are no different to Shona people I believe this strongly, even Xhosas who migrated to Zimbabwe overwhelmingly went to infiltrate shona society , translated their surnames and started to speak Zezuru
Shona sister languages are plenty in Europe , Spanish , Portuguese, Russia, Japan, not mentioning India . I think Indians can speak sjona with so much ease bcoz the Word Shona is Indian also
my reason of learning Shona Zimbabwe is because I am currently having a future with a wonderful Zimbabwe partner especially if going to Bulawayo Zimbabwe in the near future when things are safe
I am learning Shona for court interpreting. I wanna help shona people get justice in courts of south Africa😍😍
