one of the most underrated engines in the world

  • @ThePaulv12

You'd expect bores like that in a V12. They are a very long lived engine but most don't make it to old age for reasons of neglect.
Those connecting rods and crank are going to be fine to about 700 - 900hp. The crank is already probably forged, the rods are definitely forged. Thing is V12s are have such a large overlap in firing cycles that there is almost no torsional vibration. In fact V12s have perfect balance - primary and secondary. I'm a Jaguar V12 nut and this engine is better designed than any V12 Jaguar.
Added to the the buttressed or skirted block has 6 bolt mains - 6 bolt mains. How many? 6 bolt mains... All those mains all with 6 bolts and a V12 make the bottom end intrinsically rugged. The stock crank will be fine.
If you intend to turbo it up I'd do this, take the existing rings off and increase the gaps and put them back in. If not put it all back together with new bearings and the old rings.
NA the only way to get big power out of it is to rev it up. There's no other way because it is only 5 litres.
The place to get power out of this relatively cheaply is the the camshafts, valve springs and an injection system that has native 12 cylinder support with native 12 cylinder ignition support. This is where the big expense will be.
There is a place in New Zealand that sells reground stock camshafts. I'd look them up. They're on TH-cam.
Realistically you're probably only going to get 450hp tops out of this engine by keeping the rpms below 7000rpm using stock components. All V12 Jaguars turn 6500rpm no problems at all and this is more rugged than they are, so 7000rpm on this will be doable.
That's still not bad in a 260Z though is it?
Also a V12 is 2x inline 6 engines joined into a Vee configuration. Each bank has the 6 cylinder firing order of 1,5,3,6,2,4.

I think you just won best comment on my channel! Thanks for the write up, I appreciate it. I found out Toyota forged the crankshaft from the factory so no worries there, I have a company in California grinding the cams right now. I have two turbos already to be put in! The forged rods are here already, and the forged JE pistons are ordered too! I also snagged ARP main and head studs for the engine, new valve seals and a bunch of other stuff. If you are interested in watching the newer videos a bit of progress has been made, I’ve learned a good deal since I made this video, and love reading more comments like yours, there’s always something to learn.

@@rustbucketbeauties2767 Yeah google algorithms- gotta love them.
Did you find a replacement for that broken part?
I'm in Australia and there's these guys in WA putting one in a Toyota Cressida. You may have seen their vids. Thing is it almost bolted right in. Gearbox mount and tailshaft bolted up and minor engine mount mods.even clearence for the air cond condenser.
They're going to turbo it up and are building a grandpa sleeper.
I might build one too. Mine will just be stock daily driver. Trouble might be finding a LSD for the Cressida - we'll see.
I'll check out your later vids.

I am working with quickshift.tv if you have seen their Supra build. Pretty impressive stuff going on there, I’m just a guy in a garage building it with the help of some people far smarter than I. The guys there worked on a higher flowing oil pump that I’ll end up using as well. Gotta upgrade pretty much all of the engine and auxiliary systems along with it.

    Engine looks really clean inside.
The huge oil filter is the same from the 2H diesel engine in the Landcruiser from the 80's. Easy to get here in Australia where those were popular - though not sure on your side of the world. Part number is 15601-68010. Cost me 20 bucks.
As for the valve covers they seem to be made of a magnesium alloy. I had mine glass bead-blasted prior to painting and noticed they came up very dull (I think because they have Zinc in the alloy as well) once stripped back to bare metal unlike all the other intake and engine bits I had cleaned which are all normal Ali alloy. The magnesium might be a little challenging for welding repairs on the covers. I have since learned that Toyota have made a few engines with magnesium valve covers.

I do wanna have that engine on my dream car. got the design on paper. plus with a twin turbo setup that can get 500hp or more with proper tuning and modefication plus the sound it can makes is similar to a classic 60s F1 that is very rewarding to be honest
