Just bought mine from 1st military, and have used it for 8 days straight in the weather bomb. Was very warm and dry, but the rain must have doubled its pack weight. Took ages to dry it out too. Not too sure what to make of the poncho shelter, think I will just make my own.
Love the D ring and zip mod. I got mine from Military Mart as well, and luckily I was happy with both ponchos. I'll be doing a few mods to mine this year. Nice video, thanks for sharing! Happy New Year
Iv had the same issue in the past with the exact same item.you have to go through it with a fine tooth comb.when my replacement arrived it was literally brand new all be it, dated 1971 or something. You shouldnt expect to have to check it all out on arrival. Keep up the good work.
I got one from the same supplier. Similar condition. Pegs were bent, ally that was oxidising and will get chucked. Islet gone also. I haven't checked it as thoroughly as you but suspect it will be the same. After buying I found out there are three sizes. I would've liked the choice of a bigger one.
I proofed my Polish lavvu with Fabsil and brushed it on. Came out fine. Make sure you cover the grass as when I did mine I burnt a nice ring in the lawn!!! To up the waterproofness of the Fabsil you can dissolve a dollop of clear Silicone into the mix. I have done this with success on several tarps making a kind of SILNYLON.
my email to military mart: Hi I recently bought a new Polish Lavvu tent from you recently. As soon as it arrived i handed it over to an outdoor tailor for a zip to be sewn on to it as a modification. I have used you guys before on numerous occasions with good results and mentioned this on my youtube channel. When I got the tent back from the tailor I was horrified to find that one poncho was supergrade and the 2nd one was grade 2 with failings all over it (a missing button, rips, grommets missing and others half falling apart, stitching coming away and general signs of hard use) Its too late to return it as the zips have already been sewn on. Please can you check the other lavvu tents to make sure the same mistake doesn't happen again. I am now thinking of buying the tents from elsewhere and paying the tailor to do the same thing all over again (£45). To be honest im less than impressed. What are you prepared to do to correct this mistake. Thanks Military Marts Reply: Hi, I am sorry to hear this. We would ask you to return the damaged section? But as it has been altered now you would be unable to do this. We could ask you to either have it un stitched and return it back to us with the returns form enclosed. Or you could order a polish lavvu half at 8.00 these are used grade but we could send you a new grade one instead if thats any help. Please advise. My Reply: Hi I can show you a link to the video for details for proof, the time it will take to un stitch it all and post it back would not be worth doing to be honest, the tailor guys is off till next year now. A 50% refund i feel would be fair & to make sure the others are checked in case the same thing happens to someone else. Thanks no response...............
I brought one of these from Military Mart, both ponchos were battered with buttons missing, holes in it, etc, etc. Still waiting to get a new one but i doubt I ever will..
My lavvu was in ok condition but my pegs are totally different to yours, there is no chord in the eyelets and the pegs are easily stored in the cavity of the pole when packed! On a plus side i did get a brand new unissued swedish army trangia mess kit from them after i watched your last overnighter! Great idea on the d-rings for a ridge line
Pal I hope they sort it out soon, you've seen mine and its definitely grade one but saying that it does need waterproofing again. The zip idea is good, when mine got wet it was a nightmare to button up with cold fingers. Take care
I had the same problem about 6 months ago with MiltaryMart . One side perfect the other atrocious . I contacted them and spoke to a lady called Sharon , she handled the case perfectly and sent a new poncho next day delivery so Im really surprised to hear they have treated you this way
Think you have been unlucky, Funky. I have bought two of these, both in good condition, re waterproofed them to be sure to be sure. Like the tent very much, although they are heavy enough to carry. Have bought other stuff from MM and like them.
Have had similar problems with mailed military surplus and its always better to check and if not happy send it back pronto . preferably I now usually go in person to see what I am buying. If you are going to start again , a bit of info about the grommets at the bottom of the buttoned side these denote the size ie 1 = small, 2=Med and 3=Large , you have a small and medium . So I would go for the 3 grommet ones to get the most room. Best of luck and Happy Christmas. Hogweed.9
Such a shame reg the quality of the second lavuu and hoping you're able to get it sorted. Absolutely loving those mods and if ok i'd like to do the same too, may I ask who it is you got to do the mods? ~Peace~
Military mart isn't far from where I live and I have visited the shop a few times and got some good stuff from them but you do have to root to find it as there is also a lot of used items too and the staff don't seem to be that bothered about helping
You have to be careful with MW but I am sure they would replace the bad piece at no cost, si I would put it to them. Show them this video so they can see the problem then when the new piece arrives make to mods to suit. It makes a great easy to erect woodland shelter for quick overnight camps and I found it quite warm provided your ground sheet blocked off the gaps at the bottom by allowing the groundsheet to ride up against the walls a little. Sandy
I'm wondering if you do get another one have you thought about making it waterproof using a mix of Linseed oil, mineral spirits and bees wax? I see you already bought the Fabsil but having a traditional oil cloth type finish would be cool!
This may be abit late. but i ordered 2 lavvus from MM. and they both seem to be in good condition All grommets seem to be in good nick and no repairs been made that i can see. The only problem i have with them is both ponchos not being the same year (My OCD kicking in) i have one 1976-77-80-86 also they need a good clean and waterproofing. But then again i was talking to Dave on Facebook and ask if he could pick me out decent ones. Also they are not advertised as NEW* on the site anymore. But I always try not to expect the best quality when buying military surplus items online.
Nice review funky, I've sewn mine up one side and have plans to put the loop on top, I've even thought about sewing a strip of material around the bottom so it can be hung slightly higher, maybe even keep the damp off the bottom like you were saying. The zip is a great idea. Atb jason
Hey Funky, i do like the Lavvu. Shame about military mart, i heard lot of stuff not being the listed quality from there. Being in Sweden i don't order from there anyway since they charge ridiculous delivery charges. I got mine in good condition from ebay. Basically new but without the tent pegs. I love the mods though mate, really good idea with the zip and the raising off the ground. I got some great waterproof solution silicon guard stuff from the states. Was about 20 quid for 2 cans. Hope you get it all done and sorted, and test it out. Will be good to see what you do with it. Have a great christmas. All the best, Robert
It doesn't matter the price it's the principle of how it's described I can see the reply you recieved but it's a good letter that you sent with no ranting Hope all gets sorted Happy trails
I brushed on my fabsil on the 1st lavvu on the second one I got a pressure pump from Tesco garden bit for £5 sprayed the fabsil on let dry a day then second coat. I can blast the lavvu with pressure washer on the sprayed one and not a drop gets through HTH
cheers for the heads up was thinking of getting one thats 2 things i found that i not like about them now the other is when it rains and tent open half tent ground gets wet
Thanks for the heads up funky...i have wanted to purchase stuff from these guys but wen i get a postage quote it turns out that postage is double or three times the amout of the items being ordered...it actually works out cheaper to fly to the uk and pick it up...i only live in ireland...other stores ship for a couple of euro...duno why the postage is so much and judging from ur video postage is not the only issue.
great mods , pity about the grade tho . no one has said yet ,so what is the wieght ? when both are together with pole etc ,,, merry xmas to you and yours ,,,all the best kenny
Nice little video fella, I hope you and your family have a good Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year brother P.S. I hope Santa gets you a decent camera for Christmas ;-)
First of all thanks for doing the vid, there are so many vids these days where everything is perfect and deal of the century and all live happily ever after, but as we all know it rarely goes perfectly. Personally i would ditch and get a new one, as spending time on money on something that you know has problems will always bug you. Instead of zips you could also punch eyelets in and lace with leather cord or something and do it yourself. Just ideas.
Looks like an interesting project with the Lavu Funky. Sorry to hear about the MM cockup, but they have always sorted out any problems for me pretty smartish. Hey my friend first I want say merry Christmas to you and the misses, I have read quite a few complaints about military Mart. Hope you get it worked out, I am looking forward to seeing out in the field. Take care
good mods, shame about the damaged half, I had and returned one of these awhile back, Even with the damage it should be good enough to test, if you get on with it, then get a new half at a later date.
I don't know how anyone can sell these as brand new, aren't they 30+ years old now? Tryign to pair two halves from the same decade is fairly tricky unless you get to hand pick them. Hope you get something sorted with MM funky, if you buy something super grade you'd expect it to be checked first, that's not on at all
Contact the seller and see what they offer. To be honest I'd probably unpick the new parts, keep them and get a brand new replacement tent. Then it's just a matter of getting the parts put back on. At least they don't have to be remade.
The zip mods etc are good Darren but, it's blood pressure time when you find a fault like you did. there really is no excuse for a professional trading company making such a bad mistake. I couldn't see all your lavvu mate, but do you have the top cape part that covers the shoulders on the outside? I do believe Sandy and Griff use theirs this way. (I bought mine from "Wilderness" some time back and it was New) Hope it works out for you quickly Darren. Cheers.......
I tried pitching the Lavvu both ways and found the way Funky has it is correct. When I pitched mine the other way the top where the material folds over itself was a rucked up mess. This way it folded over itself neatly! I ended up cutting the shoulder flaps off from the inside as they did nothing to the structure except add weight. I kept the material for repairs and possibly to make a kind of flap to go over the arm holes so as to be able to have them open without water getting in?
those canvas Lavvu poncho / tents arent available stateside. You can get a vinyl look alike but not canvas. I hate being sold a switched item like that. Should take it to your local trading standards because that's not you ordered and not advertising the product correctly hope you have a good Xmas funky
I like the mods you have made but its a shame the item wasn't up to scratch. You did the right thing contacting them in a fair and reasonable manner. They should send you the postage to return the faulty half and replace it free of charge. And also refund half for your trouble at least. Hope it gets resolved. All the best...oh and merry christmas to you and the family. mark
I'm totally baffled at the difference between the 2 poncho's, it it utterly pointless to mix grades/conditions on a product such as the Laavu..you need them paired according to the grade..both as new for years more use or both old for a kids play tent or a gear tent..a case here of MM sucking it up and ending a new one, they probably bought it for like £3 in terms of unit cost..they are SO lucky you didn't do an unboxing on camera opening the packet live as it were,,that would have sunk 'em in terms of a leg to stand on,,,a refund would have been guaranteed...I film but not upload quite a bit of stuff just in case of "fawlty" gear..hope it works out bro...p.s. Strikeforce have some of my blades in...oohhhh!!!
Great mods . not nice when you get done over like that does not matter how much it cost the description should match the product you buy . and i think you would be within your rights to ask for the price of the mods as well as the money for the tent . ATB Have a Funky Christmas
From my past dealings with those guys I would say get in touch and they'll sort it out. Mind you, I have a slight advantage as they're less than 1/2 an hour for me so I can handle stuff before I buy it off them.
hi mate odourless white spirit [or try to get low odour] and silicon works a treat to waterproof these canvas lavuus and costs next to nothing compaired to fabsil, thanks for sharing..ATB..colin
Hi darren that is terrible service should be replaced no questions asked after seeing the video and all the free promotional stuff there are getting from your channel,I bought a fleece from wilderness leisure and the zip was broken so i sent an email and they sent a replacment with in two days and didnt ask me to return the broken item thats customer service brilliant and have used since because of that. Please keep us informed if there are any changes. All the best Pete PS happy xmas mate have a good one
Had two from MM, one fine the other shocking, ordered two Trangia stoves A condition, one missing the pan support leg, trangia stove cracked leaking, spirit bottle hole in bottom leaking and flammable. Ordered a swedish army water bucket from site that looked nothing and I mean nothing like the picture on the site. Reported it, nothing. Placed second order for £100 of gear they sat on for two weeks without des patching because a £3 item on the order wasn't in stock. Will not be doing business with them again
i had problems with same company .??.ive also heard the same from others.check out there eBay profile ??.had to bring a case against via PayPal.and eBay.before that I bought a Swedish army stove described as new on receiving it looked like it had been blown up . never bothered with them again.thats why i always try to buy new army surplus .also check out there profiles on ebay before using .sorry Darren hope you sort it out nothing worse then feeling mugged off .atb mate merry xmass and a happy new year. peace brother
Darren, MM owes you a new half without you having to pay anything. I would also send a copy of the mod bill as I feel your are also entitled to at least 1/2 of the cost in "cash or kind". That's what I "gently request" when a company here in the US tries to "bait and switch" me. I always get what I ask for, usually with a disingenuous mea culpa! Anyhoo, All the Best to You and Yours! JimBonz
It's been put away damp mate. Mine has holes in it. Supplier is not interested so for myself I use other places to buy my kit. Military Mart's loss. As you say it's not the money it's just not what was advertised. Atb Jai
well they are going to lose a lot of potential business by not sending you a replacement, it would have been fair to say dump the used one and only pay postage on a replacement, with the amount of subscribers you have and word of mouth they will be loseing thousands of users by not being honest and decent with you.......
I suspect it wasn't checked properly. Make more sense to swap the shit half with another. Mine was mint unissued for £45 from military mart. That velcro idea solved my zipper dilemma! Ill be doing it myself by hand 🧵😬
Just bought mine from 1st military, and have used it for 8 days straight in the weather bomb. Was very warm and dry, but the rain must have doubled its pack weight. Took ages to dry it out too. Not too sure what to make of the poncho shelter, think I will just make my own.

that is really crappy customer care . take the zip off and send it back and we will send another one for £8 . are they serious ......

did that mod plus added stove jack plus sewed all the arm holes shut added loop to top for no pole set up .great set up and video
problem resolved - got refunded.
That's too bad about the wear and tear, I would leave a serious review on their website for that one.

Bummer Darren! Glad it was resolved. Are you going to re-do it? It looks like a neat system.
Very nice tarp collector. I like the tarb
Did mine almost the same after seeing this. added an extra flap to the arm holes that secures closed with snaps aka poppers as you chaps say.

Looks like an interesting project with the Lavu Funky.
Sorry to hear about the MM cockup, but they have always sorted out any problems for me pretty smartish. With your YT army of followers, I am sure they will be even more helpful ;)

Darren, does Wilderness leisure still exist?
Excellent set up, Funky ... Too bad about the junky side!! Love the concept!! ;-)
In Poland, this new tent costs 13 pounds. 17 dollars
Contact the seller and see what they offer. To be honest I'd probably unpick the new parts, keep them and get a brand new replacement tent. Then it's just a matter of getting the parts put back on. At least they don't have to be remade.
Loving the mods
I received 2 different pole sets, one is a 2 piece that are longer, one set is a 3 piece of shorter poles.

(I bought mine from "Wilderness" some time back and it was New)
Hope it works out for you quickly Darren.
Bushcraft1974 Thanks for the useful tips.
Yeah someone sleeping at the switch. Hope they got it straight for you. The zipper looks great. Thanks for the heads up. atb
those canvas Lavvu poncho / tents arent available stateside. You can get a vinyl look alike but not canvas. I hate being sold a switched item like that. I buy certain military surplus clothing at times , mostly insulated extreme weather cold liners. So far I have been lucky in that I have got what was described. Once they have your money many places dont want to talk with you anymore.
I have been able to buy 3 sets through a hit and miss surplus site out of the great Lakes region. So far all 6 pcs were in new condition.
Should take it to your local trading standards because that's not you ordered and not advertising the product correctly hope you have a good Xmas funky
What size thread did they use
I now have this lavvu my friend,,,,
sometimes life provides lemons, i'm sure you'll get this fixed up and be drinking lemonade before you know it :)
I like the mods you have made but its a shame the item wasn't up to scratch.
You did the right thing contacting them in a fair and reasonable manner.
They should send you the postage to return the faulty half and replace it free of charge.
And also refund half for your trouble at least.
Hope it gets resolved.

Mate why didn’t you send it back, would never would of accepted that, I bought mine, never been out of its packet, I would of been fuming with it
From my experience, military marts customer service and description of there goods is really quite poor.
I bought a (Storm) Lock Pick set 17 days ago..it still hasn't arrived.
I bought a (Heinnie Haynes) Mora Companion 2 days ago, it came today.
I'd get a new one, better be safe than sorry in the long run. A bit of faff now will pay dividends later.
this looks like a used one supposedly in fair condition but not "new"

d'oh, stupid screen refresh, you've already done it...
My military mart lavvu came in perfect condition might just have been unlucky darren
when did you get it?
before or after this video release
thanks
half of it waz funky, perhaps put the new side to the wind...

that shit pisses me off,why don't they label stuff as partly fucked up,its like there always tryin to pull a fast one on us
they do that here to us in the usa as well funky and it pisses me off when they talk to us like we are idiots..
All the best Pete
PS happy xmas mate have a good one
Turn it outside in you got it wrongly set up buddy.
you better tell all the other youtube channels i saw then lol
ditch it and get a new one
Darren, MM owes you a new half without you having to pay anything. I would also send a copy of the mod bill as I feel your are also entitled to at least 1/2 of the cost in "cash or kind". That's what I "gently request" when a company here in the US tries to "bait and switch" me. I always get what I ask for, usually with a disingenuous mea culpa! Anyhoo, All the Best to You and Yours! It's been put away damp mate. Mine has holes in it. Supplier is not interested so for myself I use other places to buy my kit. Military Mart's loss. As you say it's not the money it's just not what was advertised. Atb Jai
well thats piss poor. its deffo a grade 2.
well they are going to lose a lot of potential business by not sending you a replacement, it would have been fair to say dump the used one and only pay postage on a replacement, with the amount of subscribers you have and word of mouth they will be loseing thousands of users by not being honest and decent with you.......
Send it back , get a refund and shop elsewhere mate.
i dont like the polish lavvu i think they are shit dont buy one keep you money
I suspect it wasn't checked properly. Make more sense to swap the shit half with another. Mine was mint unissued for £45 from military mart. That velcro idea solved my zipper dilemma! Ill be doing it myself by hand 🧵😬
