Your youtube modules are so so so fantastic. I recently got full custody of two pitbulls, I used to only have them on the weekends. And I have scoured the youtube world for dog training purposes and while there are many great trainers on this platform, you are on another level in terms of the big picture in taking care of a canine companion. Listening to your dog. I know you specialize in puppy training, but I find your videos applicable to my journey of fully integrating my 7 and 6 year old dog in my life. It seems like no matter the topic covered in a module - other elements of taking care of a dog are seamlessly incorporated - e.g. grooming and using a snuffle mat (enrichment). I love that you give tips on cleaning food dispensing toys, tips to avoid bowel obstruction, etc - all the details that are extremely relevant to sustaining positive rituals with your dog on a day-to-day basis. Today, thanks to you - I let my dogs choose their own adventure during their walk (urban environment that happened to have relatively mild pedestrian and vehicular traffic this morning) and then when we got home we shredded up some cardboard. They’re fully passed out now. My one dog is at this very moment - as i am typing this conment out - TAIL WAGGING in his dream. Not just twitch running. First time I have, in my seven years of owning him, observed this behavior. Thank you Michelle for all that you do, for striving to provide meaningful content.
We appreciate your thoughtful comment so much! Yes, we specialize in puppy advice, but many people like yourself can apply that same info to adult dogs. We love that your pups got an awesome walk this morning, meeting their specific canine needs. The cardboard shredding sound like an awesome time. Judging from their power nap, it sounds like it was an excellent choice of activities today! Thank you so much for your kind words! I love hearing that the content is helping awesome dog parents like yourself. 🥰
this was helpful! I am a dog sitter and currently puppy sitting. they get really wild about the squirrels in the yard and disrupt the neighbors! for the time being, I’ve put on videos on TH-cam with various crows & squirrels and noises to help with the reactivity!
Thanks for the great video! My dog who is 7 months old ‘demand barks’ so like when she wants you to play or wants another dog to play she will bark. How do we stop that?
You'll want to try to get ahead of the behavior. Try to anticipate when she's going to want your attention and prevent it by offering her play or an activity before she has to ask. As for other dogs, you can do some dog sensitivity training so she learns that she doesn't get to greet every dog she sees. Barking at other dogs is actually pretty impolite in canine communication so it's good to teach her not to bark. Exposing her to other dogs at a distance where she can be calm and get rewards, as described in the video, will be a good first step.
Clicked so fast and commenting before even watching lol my puppy has been baring at EVERY noise - neighbor closing their car door 4 doors down? Bark. Wind blowing? Bark. Everything 😅
So my 3 1/2 month puppy has started a new habit. We have quite a few dogs that live close to us. When she goes outside, she does a bunch of “half” barks to see if she gets any responses! Any advice? Thanks!
It's good that you've learned the trigger for her barking, and it's good to start working on this when you hear just a half woof. Working on it now will prevent it from escalating. Use the desensitization tips in this video to work on this.
My dog barks at other dogs coming close when we are on walks. He barks at delivery trucks and people walking by our house. If he can see them from the back yard. I put up a tarp on the driveway gate but the wind broke the fate so we had to take the tarp off. He barks at squirrels and he barks when he hears neighborhood dogs barking even ones pretty far away i can hear them faintly. Were trying everything to calm him down and desensitze him and give him positive reinforcement. But he's 8 mons does it get better gradually as he gets older?
This doesn't get better with time (the more he does it the more he will continue to do it) but it gets better with training. You'll need to take each scenario and work through them as outlined in this video. You can also make sure the rest of his life is meeting his needs including getting regular mental and physical exercise, time with humans, good food and sleep. Dogs whose needs are not met will be more "edgy" and prone to barking. Making sure he gets enough sleep is a big one!
It sounds like your puppy is not ready for that environment. Try a quieter area so he doesn't become a reactive dog. You can teach your other dog a different signal to indicate he wants to go out. We recommend a bell.
My 4 mo lab barks to try and get our senior dog to play (he never does). I don't know how to desensitize for this situation. I think it extends to any attention getting at this point
You can prevent it from happening by keeping them separated. It will also be good for your puppy to have puppy playmates so the lab's need to play with other dogs is met in a healthy way and the lab doesn't have to ask for it from the senior.

My puppy never stops barking. Barking at noise outside. Barking at the cats. Barking at our other dog, who never barks. Barking in her crate. Barking at the neighbors dogs. Barking at the garbage truck. We are so overwhelmed and almost ready to give up and find her a new home.
It sounds like you would really benefit from having a trainer work with you and your pup. Here is a directory that might be helpful: www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/ fearfreepets.com/resources/directory/
I just adopted a 1 yr old bernadoodle and he barks at any adult he comes in contact with and when my husband comes to bed at night will get up and run at him barking. I’m going to try the toy method and see if that will work but any other advice?
It sounds like you would really benefit from having a trainer come to your home to work with you and your pup. Unfortunately, the training industry is not well regulated and you have to do your research to make sure the trainer you work with uses fear free and positive methods based in behavioral science. Credentials to look for in a trainer would be Fear Free Certified, CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) and/or CBCC-KA (Certified Behavior Consultant Canine-Knowledge Assessed.) Here is a directory that might be helpful: www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/ Or one other option in case you need more resources: fearfreepets.com/resources/directory/
You'll have to try and create training scenarios where he can be exposed (at a distance) to the trigger and you can desensitize it with positive rewards. Keep in mind that it could be the noise of the wind or even the feeling of wind on his ears. Sometimes the trigger is different than we think.
Yes! We can help! We want to address the underlying emotion of excitement in order to help with this. This video can help you! th-cam.com/video/hd06TW-xwGs/w-d-xo.html
My dog barks at us when we're in the car, she is in the back and we are in the front. I would like to stop this when only one of us is in the car and driving! Thanks🐶
It's hard to know for sure but this could be a sign of anxiety in the car. You can re-start car training, teaching her how to be calm. It could be that she would do better in a crate in the back, where she can't see you. This video can help you! th-cam.com/video/sC03vyg8ysc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=j6OtKxYkGlSZLgOH
This video can teach you how to introduce or re-introduce the cats to the puppy, while teaching him how you want him to behave. th-cam.com/video/ZOsH97V-9SU/w-d-xo.html
You can use the desensitization process outlined in this video to change her association to something more "meh". It will take intentional training sessions but you'll get there!
We believe that using a crate is an essential part of raising and training a puppy. When used correctly with the proper desensitization, crates are like cribs or playpens for babies and toddlers. They are used to keep your pup safe and out of trouble, especially when you're gone from home and unable to supervise them. Crates are NEVER used as punishment or to trap them for long periods of time, but are used for safety or rest.
Thanks for watching! 🐶 What does your dog bark at? Do you need any extra help?
Stopped watching when you endorsed locking dogs in tiny cages. Absolutely cruel, inhumane, abusive. You’re abhorrent.
I already have so much respect for you, but the decision to mute the barking in the video was a huge win!
Thank you! We have dogs too, we know! 🤣

You're a genius!!! Ive been having to watch videos with headphones on or not at all because of the barking. The mute is just smart!

I'm thankful to have these videos to watch every week.

My dog barks whenever I am at the kitchen counter- even if I'm not making food, she thinks I am.
With the tips in this video you can start to desensitize the activity that causes the barking!
My pup barks at shadows caused by the wind moving trees. How do I desensitize that?
You'll have to try and create training scenarios where he can be exposed (at a distance) to the trigger and you can desensitize it with positive rewards. Keep in mind that it could be the noise of the wind or even the feeling of wind on his ears. Sometimes the trigger is different than we think.
Thank you. I’ll do that.
My dog barks at images on the tv , sounds outside the apartment door and more so if I’m in the room. Help!
Use the desensitization process outlined in this video to change her association with those triggers.
