    One thing Im finding works with my 9week puppy is if he's in the crate been for a play and toilet so not in need of anything. If his occasional whimpers turns into howling or barking we all get up and leave the room. He soon learns that his behaviour is driving the family away. As soon as he settles we come back in the room. So quiet behaviour gets a good reward.

    I JUST got a rescue dog yesterday and he hated going into his crate. Today, we did crate training. Followed your advice from this video alone and he's literally laying down asleep in his crate. It only took us (my dog and I) about 1 hour to get him comfortable with his crate!!!

    Thank you so much! I’ve always used a crate with my dog who is now nearly 3 but felt guilty ‘locking her up’. I started to leave the door open so that she had more freedom but she simply could not rest at all. Now I understand the concept of decompression! It really is the only time in the day that she can rest.

      I have a deaf cat and we are able to use finger movement commands to get her attention. She comes when I call her and gives high fives for food sometimes. Shadows or lights get her attention, too. Maybe try using a pet laser or flash light to signal your dog while you train them. Also I found she can’t hear sounds but is able to feel vibrations of musical instruments. When the cat was hiding, I could play ukulele and she’d come out. Maybe try a dog whistle out too because even though they are deaf, deafness comes at differing levels and your dog may be able to pick up on the higher frequencies or feel them like my can feels the ukulele. Again my experience is with a cat, but my deaf cat is the best trained one.

      He mentioned in another vid that he has a set amount of feed for the day and the treats come out of that. When dinner time comes the dog is fed the leftovers of the "treats" which aren't actually treats, they are his normal feed. So if the puppy has had a busy day training there may not be much dinner left if he's been rewarded a lot throughout the day for being good or whatever.

    I have two goldendoodels brothers litter mates. They turn 2 tomorrow. Never had a problem. they played together slept together and were really good dogs Then this past May One of them just attacked the other for no reason. No food, we were all in the living room and out of no where he attacked the other one. Since that day he has attacked everytime they were together. I sent the aggressive one to training. He got along with all the other dogs in training. They use a e collar. After two weeks he came hone and a long as the e collar is on he's good but he still trys to go after his brother. Once that happens even the e collar means nothing. They both are crate trained and the aggressive dog will attack his brothers when his brother is in the crate?? Any suggestions?

    Thanks Will. The paw seemed innocent, and, yet… it will ramp up. I’ve never crated my dogs. I’m getting a pup and I’d like to crate him. However, my husband always said, “What good is a guard dog inside a crate?” That made sense to me as well. Love your training tips!

    • @lucymein573
      @lucymein573 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Your husband has a point, but IMO a dog shouldn't be active as a 'guard dog' until they have matured - you can't expect a puppy to know how to 'guard', or make their own decisions in a potentially stressful situation!
      Crate training is a fantastic tool in training your pup to be a well mannered dog, and gives them a space to relax that they can make their own (our pup loves hers, we've covered it and it's like her den which is instinctive for dogs). Ultimately the better training you can give your pup early on, the better mannered and more obedient they will be when they are fully grown. Good luck with your new pup!

    I am curious what you would do in this situation.....with a 1 1/2 year old rescue who had spent her entire life in a crate, in a kennel in a warehouse with 200+ other dogs. We had the crate out for about 6 months but we did not force Ginger Rogers into her crate. She never went into the crate on her own. We did put her in the crate with a frozen beef bone every day early on. Ginger is not a barker except to let me know there is a stranger, or an issue (something burning on the stove for example.) She did not get on the furniture or chew anything in the home except her toys. After about an hour and the bone is finished, she whined to ask to get out. She was house trained, and I am retired and home every day already so i did not press the crate issue. Instead, I focused on "house manners" and helping her get comfortable with us and her new home. I have taught her to "chill" on her harness and leash while I sat on the park bench (we live in a township with a leash law.) or on the couch near her.

    My pup hates the crste, I've have tried, she was in there screaming the house down for over an hour, with me beside her, didn't want to know treats, toys or anything, after the neighbours banged on the wall I had to let her out, instantly she calmed down and layed down. I followed advice from the breeder who said she had started crate training and she was fine after ten to twenty minutes. She was not. Now I can't even shut her in a room without her kicking off and screaming the house down. Any advice to help her just stay in a room would be great as toys and treats and my company and my old 13 years old gsds company is not enough to call her. She just hates being shut in. Many thanks.

    Hiya, really enjoying your videos whilst planning my next dog. Love the canine behaviour information rather than just training, animal psychology is what a lot of people forget about! A question regarding crate training… is it possible to pretty much crate train your puppy within the first 24 hours of bringing them home following your video advice? It’s something I’m really keen to do but wasn’t sure if it could be achieved that quickly.

    • @ZrankFappaH
      @ZrankFappaH ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never heard of a dog being fully crate training within 24 hours. You wouldn’t learn an instrument and be reliably good at it in 24 hours, just as an example.
      It takes time and patience.

    • @laurablockley1269
      @laurablockley1269 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ZrankFappaH I think an instrument is a bit more complicated 😊 I now have my puppy. She went from a pen with the breeder to a crate with me. Her crate door is open during the day when she is with me and it’s closed at night or when I am out for an hour or so, to keep her safe. She happily went to bed tonight in her crate no issues at all. I have had her a week and we had no issues the first night she was in her crate either. She has enrichment, exercise and cuddles during the day and a great place to rest and de compress. It’s entirely possible I’ve got one of the laid back ones though 😂

    • @ZrankFappaH
      @ZrankFappaH ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@laurablockley1269 Yeah certainly sounds like you’ve got a fairly laid back doggo! The instrument analogy was more just me saying - it takes time to learn things totally new to us (and no doubt our doggos) and we can get stressed and upset when we don’t learn it in a day, or a month etc.
      I’m so happy to hear things are going well though! 5 days time til my mini Dachshund comes home, soon as he is home I plan to begin making positive associations with his crate, but fully expect this may fine a few weeks or months depending on his own personality and such.
      Nervous and excited 😂

    • @laurablockley1269
      @laurablockley1269 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ZrankFappaH It may do or it may not. Make it as den like as possible and it will feel more natural for them but I agree every dog and human is an individual and some take longer than others to learn things. I doubt the dog will get particularly stressed out but will want your company cos they aren’t used to being alone at that age. Just don’t stress yourself out about anything as the dog will pick up on that.
      Very exciting getting a new puppy. My top tip for the mornings after letting them out for a wee is to serve their breakfast in a snuffle mat or puzzle toy. Gives you time to have a quiet coffee or go on youtube ;) whilst they figure out how to get their breakfast. Especially helps with any puppy early mornings. Enjoy! :)

      @@laurablockley1269 Thanks for the tips! I have just had two Kongs arrive, so I plan to feed him his meals with the Kong as much as I can, stimulate his brain and make him work for his food a little.

    Would this work for a dog that was previously crate trained but has developed separation anxiety since he’s been adopted into a new family?The previous owners said he was grate trained but he cries and barks every time we put him in his crate, or let him outside, or even just go to another room. Our new one year old Great Dane has only been with us for a couple of days. He is learning quickly to walk nicely on a lead, to stay on his spot when we eat and to be gentle around our toddler but he has trouble being left alone. Pointers are high energy, you need to give a decent amount of excersise before crating then putting in a Kong toy filled with food a frozen will keep them occupied for a while. Also ignoring the noise and only coming back when dog quiet. If they cry and you come back they know they how to make you come back. If you are worried about the noise and neighbors what about hiring a remote holiday let. Or put your dog in boarding kennels. For a week.

      Also, try to make them get used to you coming and going. So they understand that everytime you go, you WILL come back to them. Start witch very short periods of time with you leaving the room or the house and coming right back in. Like 2 seconds at the first round, 5 seconds the next if that is successful try 30, 60 and so on. If they do it right, treat them, if they start whining, go a fiew steps back to shorter time periods. You need to come back BEVORE your dog decides to wine. And when it start to wine, follow the instructions on the comment above me. This here is simply a tip for the beginning. Baby steps. Good luck ;)

      I disagree, it differs from age and breed. Also, there are some different environments that may differ comfortability. Don’t forgot to always refer back to your veterinarian for advice. If you don’t have a veterinarian yet and are waiting for your appointment always feel free to call the office and usually the tech will answer your questions or the vet them self. We ALL have questions at different times and sometimes need them answered before the next visit.
      There is a tip posted about meals and schedules and when to pull water dishes out of access for potty schedules.

    Hello. My 10 month Cockapoo does go in his crate muktiple times a day and is rewarded and stays relatively quiet and is verbally corrected if he starts to moan. But when we leave the house he loses his mind almost immediately. We have tried desensitising leaving queues but he seems to have it in his nature to lose the plot. Is using an E collar from outside the house to correct this inhumane or is there a better option? Most E collar videos I have seen suggest it is almost exclusively for recall or place commands and not to correct the dog getting anxious.. Please advise. Many thanks, Ewan.

    Hi! We have a 9 week old cocker and he LOVES his crate…….. but only at night. He goes in no problem, silent all night, no mess and positively a perfect pup! but, during the day its a big fat no. He whines and whines, no barking. What do I do? Also he follows me EVERYWHERE. I cant even move in the daytime without him waking and following. Help!!

    We found a stray female 5-month-old Blue Heeler mix, heavy on Heeler stubbornness, and while she crates like a pro through the night, she loses her mind being crated during the day.
    If I crate her during the day, she barks for the enitre time I'm gone. Heartbreaking for her.
    Last night we had to crate her for two hours and it was mayhem when we got home. We understand we missed the early weeks with her, but I prayed that God guide me today, as I was determined to solve this for her and us.
    Today, I moved the crate into my office and used the tap-on-the-crate technique. We started this morning and it is now about 5pm and she was sound asleep in her crate, happily snoozing, while I left the room, opened and loudly closed doors that trigger her crazy energy, and not. a. peep! She was a bit butthurt that she had to be in her crate for 15-minute to 30-minute intervals, but we also played and helped her to to overcome.
    Thank you! A secure pup is a happy pup.

      UPDATE: We left pup in crate with cushion and a filled kong. Came home after 25 minutes and cushion destroyed. Today we are starting over with crate in bedroom, where she sleeps, and i put her in, walk out of room, and if she starts to whine i make a loud bang close by. I am upping time I leave her. 5 minutes, 7 minutes, 10 minutes and so on. looks like it will be slow going, but I'm hopeful that at the end of weekend we'll have success.

      @@Marc0644 that/s exactly what's going on! My 7 month old rottie goes insane and his bite is just getting stronger so I really need to fix this now before something happens. The worst part is it happens at random times. There are the obvious triggers like leaving the house, not being able to play with a dog near by or right after he poops (I know it's weird) but we could just be walking normally then he looks up at me and I know what's coming. I can try and handle him but I don't want him to hurt someone else that might be walking him.

    Hey Fenrir!
    My gf and I really loves your videos - they actually convinced us that we wanted not only a dog, but a good dog!
    Our Chodsky Pes is now 7 months old, and we've been cratetraining her from day one.
    She now sleeps in a crate every night without trouble or crying, and that's perfect! BUT!
    We have another crate than the sleeping crate, in the livingroom, that we use to get her to calm down, when she can't relax herself. We've done the same training as with the sleeping crate, but for some reason she's having a hard time relaxing in the livingroom-crate. We can get her in it without trouble, but when she realises its time to relax, she'll go up from a down to a sit, and start howling every few moments. Sometimes it get really loud aswell. We just can't get her to lying down for more than a few seconds. Do you have any tips for extending the period for her to lying down and relax?

      I did crate training with my labrador when he was around 3/4 months. First dog for me so i made a lot of mistakes to train him. It is really important that u do not make eye contact with him and do not open the crate. Just let him cry bark or whatever. If u open the crate while he's in, he understands that crying = leave the crate. Just ignore him, when he's silent u can reward him. Because of these mistakes we had to use some force because he didnt want to join the crate. U can also try to let him eat his food in there. Is really important that u train him now, before he starts to get used to sleep out of the crate

      Crates are so useful but they have to be used in the right way, with quality time out of the crate. That’s great that’s worked for you, in my situation a crate has really aided training/socialising and is completely necessary (especially as a puppy). Some owners are lazy but using a crate isn’t an indicator of that.

    • @emilka2033

      It isn't always safe to leave a dog out to roam around the house when no one is there to watch it. Majority of people have to go to work and leave the house for 4+ hours a day. I would never leave a puppy uncrated by itself in the house, I wouldn't leave a dog to pace and howl at the door the entire day while I'm gone, I wouldn't leave a dog by itself to get into the trash and poison itself if not tear apart furniture and get a lethal obstruction. To call people using a crate "lazy" is really disingenuous and reflects that your ego is more important than the safety and well being of animals.
