  • Part 3 of a series, to convert a 4 speed 1956 Velocette 500 , to 5 speed.
I now await the conversion kit from Quaife, and have completed the machining and preparation of the gearbox, in this video. NOS castings and used parts as well as the new 5 speed conversion will be included in the gearbox. Then I shall install it and road test it.

You could of course put the shim on the 3 jaw chuck, open it up to hold the shim, and skim the .020" off the periphery. I do like the rod end bearing conversion you have devised, very much better! I think the castings left as cast went some way to offset the cost of the awful ,(in my opinion) fibreglass engine covers that covered up all the lovely shapes of the engine/gearbox. Chris B.

Agreed, the fibre glass covers gave a few more MPH but look nasty.
Even today, most new motorcycles engine are painted black because it is cheaper than finishing them nicely.. I find this element of new motor cycles utterly repellant.

@@alanglen5902 Yes the no need for extra finishing of the castings was one reason for the Black Shadow being stove blacked, although it is the one engine finished black I find acceptable, (Oh, the RR Merlin also looks very nice in black). Chris B.

Is there anything an Englishman and his Myford lathe can't do? Looking forward to updates.
