My parents followed the instructions in this book with great fervor when I was age 5-16, right up until the religious community they were in at the time (rightfully) shamed them into discontinuing. A side effect of this that I don't see people talking about is that this kind of "training" doesn't teach kids to unquestioningly obey their parents; it teaches kids that they must always obey, and never say no to, *all perceived authority figures*, including their parents, for life. This means that the effects continue even if the kid manages to escape their parents, and heaven forbid they ever interact with a predatory authority figure as they will have no defenses. No matter how sincere a parent considering these methods may be, or any compassionate adjustments they may make to the more egregious elements of this formula, this kind of "training" still leaves kids vulnerable to all other authorities, not just their parents. Unless you genuinely believe that all authority figures everywhere have your child's best interests at heart and that no predators exist, there is no excuse to turn to this method for raising kids.
It’s so funny to hear him state that the people against “spanking” aren’t christians. - coming from a christian who doesn’t believe in physical punishment
I'm nursing my newborn as I'm listening to the hair pulling and spanking for biting while breastfeeding..... literally makes me want to cry. Wtf. 😢 I could never do something like that to my sweet boy. He doesn't know any better. And his crying is not manipulative. He doesn't have any other way to communicate
Not only does this type of discipline have potential for abuse, it doesn’t teach children anything about right and wrong beyond obedience. The only way it could work long term is if adults remain within a hierarchy all their lives. When does a patriarch develop the wisdom to justify all the power given to him? Can the almighty really be expected to micromanage each father?
I would just like to apologize as a Christian for these people. You can call yourself a Christian but so can the Devil. That doesn’t mean you are living your life in Christ. That’s the difference. These people call themselves Christian’s but don’t live and loving, merciful life. I sometimes struggle with living a life with Christ but that doesn’t mean I’m going to turn around and whip people left and right and shame them for being of different mindset. We are called to love and be a light🩷 God bless and prayers to those children who were taken to early
Why are you as a Christian apologizing for a sect of religious fanatics who do not represent the teachings of Jesus Christ & the bible? You don't owe anyone an apology for the actions of a misguided minority that claim to be Christians. Be secure in the word and in YOUR walk with Christ. Instead of apologizing shout out the name and info of your church to give non Christians the right idea about who/ what Christianity really is. My church is Crossroads Church in Niceville, FL. Online sermons every Sunday from 7am-1pm check it out. Good bless!
It is a known fact that the Bible has been translated and adapted to match the agenda and message people want to spread. Each and every bible verse was written by an imperfect human being, translated by an imperfect human being, to then be interpreted by imperfect human beings all with their own agenda and biases. I LOVE the way you break down this book and entire philosophy of raising children. I am a new mom and could not fathom hitting my 6 month old based on the text of a terribly played game of telephone. I've read interpretations that "the rod" could parallel a shepherd's hook, used to guide children which honestly feels a bit more godly than abuse, but what do I know? I'm just an estranged sinner lol
I’m Christian and a homeschool mom of three, and am appalled by this book!! The Pearl’s philosophies are so far away from what I believe- I can’t understand these ideas at all. Absolutely disgusting!!!
I was raised in a home that implemented some of this. I actually wouldn’t consider it to have been an abusive upbringing, maybe it was that my parents didn’t use every method, I do remember my mom siting parts of the book. My whole family is still very close even though we are grown. My parents also weren’t Christian fundamentalists, more run of the mill normal Christians. All that said some of the excerpts sited in this video are pretty terrible.
Props to you for saying that overusing Michael and Debi Pear's methods of child discipline is overuse. I read this book in the web archives for myself and this kind of literacy and the rhetoric that it contains makes me angry and see red.

Girl, if you put out a 4 hour video I’d still be sat 🍿
period
I honestly think Debbie and Michel Pearl may be some of the most deeply evil people alive right now
one of the most underrated creators on this platform

This book gives me the absolute ick it makes me so uncomfortable
Great video. You need a hell of a lot more views and fast. Genuinely what the fuck are these parents on?

As an atheist who respects all religions, don’t worry, you didn’t need to apologize!

“They don’t want children, they want decorations”. As someone raised under the premise the Pearls teach, you are 💯
Great and important video it was a hard watch.
