At 4:51 you are actually flying over vineyards but you can't tell because ED squished them into flat-rectangular patches of grass. The way vineyards are constructed in SW Afghanistan is by making a wall and digging canals on both sides of the wall. The vines grow over the wall and the canals provide irrigation. This gives parts of the AO a weird combat mix of WWI trench warfare but with Vietnam type concealment. Don't let anyone tell you that hand-hand combat is obsolete! The only way to clear those is to drop down into the trenches and clear every square meter. There also needs to be elephant grass tall enough to conceal a person standing upright near the water features. There also needs to be corn, wheat and of course that hindu-kush hashish. In short, the green zones need to be way more... green! I fully understand this is early access and hope they add more vegetation variety and don't make the map so smooth.
That would be wonderful. You'd need both a pretty powerful PC and a lot of disk space to pull it off, but hopefully one day soon. I've never been but I've seen a ton of videos of the terrain you talk about.
I continue to marvel at the beauty and artistry of the graphics in DCS. I am an old flight simmer and what little taste we get in this map and modules are the dreams that have come true for those of us who enjoyed flight sims in the early days of the genre. Congratulations Nick Gray and the team at Eagle Dynamics!!! You all are making dreams come true!
I was looking forward to the Afghanistan map since I spent a whole lot of time there between 2004 and 2012. The areas that do have some details are looking good for a good start. I wish they would at least make Hwy 1 a little better detailed. It is non existant around FOB Lagman and Qalat. I took a little trip there to try and spot my old hangouts during my long tour back in 2004-2006... I have yet to visit the other locations I got to take prolonged vacations in during my other visits, but I am sure I am one who will be anxiously awaiting to see the details grow.
@@AdastraRecordings there are a lot of areas that likely won't ever be complete with high resolution but yes there are some areas that look decent down low, just very few atm. Overall it's still the most detailed realistic map we have thus far😅 and it performs well too tho it has few areas with trees so this might be why😂 lots of objects in the cities as noted in the video add a fair bit to immersion as well making it a good challenge even with out the taller buildings and trees that sinai offers
@@infantryski11b64 Not whining, just stating a fact. So you are not seeing graphics that look like DCS from 2009? What I see on most of the map. Very low res textures. There are only a couple areas that look good.
I was deployed to Bastion in 2011 was supposed to be there for 6 months was stuck for 8. Got short tour credit. I think we were the last to receive short tour credit due to so many people staying so much longer on station
Honestly I was sceptical regarding the map, bought it was it had the early buyer discount. Was afraid it would be another desert map indeed but I was impressed! Sure it is not completely finished and is rough around the edges, but it sure is not just another desert. A lot of variety regarding terrain. As someone who often flys Hueys on server for logistics, I am really looking forward to the Chinook here!
I have no doubt that Afghanistan will become the next Syria equal map in DCS... By the time being i would immediately buy it but i think that even if we wait, the many added areas to the map will make the price of 70€ definitely worth it❤💛💙 greetings from Germany
Oh, no! I only downloaded Afghanistan, not the Southwest Afghanistan map (I purchased the entire thing), I was wondering why my view looks nothing like these videos. What I am getting is a very washed out, undetailed, very, very unfinished map. I deleted it, going to try and install it again, but the SW portion does not show up for download. I was wondering why I was so unimpressed with this map.
Good day Andrei....haven't purchased the Afghanistan map as of yet. Our server IT tech had to fix all the broken codes and Lua files since the latest patch from ED. Great video

As some have already mentioned, it looks fine from up top but as you get closer to the terrain the detail level becomes substandard. This location looks much better in MSFS 2020. I'd like ED to put more focus on aircraft instead, and figure something out for spherical earth. Paying for this is ridiculous.
I agree that there are an embarrassment of riches when it comes to desert maps. The thing is, they are easier on the CPU/GPU by a quite considerable margin than heavily forested maps, one reason the Kola and Atlantic maps are as impressive as they are, performance wise, despite my computer struggling a little with both. But MSFS can do it, I hear you say.... Yes, sure. But objects are not destructible in MSFS, collisions can be much simpler and there's no random ordinance being flung about. Perhaps if DCS were made by Microsoft they'd be able to get a bit more performance but DCS does not have the resources Microsoft does, all the way down to being able to deal with the OS at a very low level, given Microsoft makes the OS. There are many things to whinge about regarding DCS, but the proportion of desert maps shouldn't be one. I'd much rather have them than not and I cut them some slack on this issue.
ngl, its not like the others, yes its a desert map but when i fly in syria and Persian gulf they instantly felt the same when afghan feels different then them
Agreed plus the air bases don't look like plastic... not sure why this is so hard for kola and SA but it's a big turn off compared to what we have in every other map. Sinai does it well.. Afghanistan is pretty good too, just very incomplete.
Taken from ED: The terrain presented is a representation of modern Afghanistan, most closely matching the years between 2008 and 2010. The map has been developed to offer gameplay that spans the many eras of combat in the region.
It's not remotely close to syria... its more like playing on Google Earth or msfs... tho down low its far from complete still. Best realistic map so far by leaps
No way there is that many atm.. the entire eastern side of the map is just low resolution satellite textures... no trees or buildings at all, looks fine from up high but down low its just flat desert and grass.. I did land "on" Bagram and take off in the f15e but yeah, it's not usable atm which is very disappointing for release as that's what they made it sound like what we would get from the start, low res and usable. It's another very incomplete product by E..😂 but crazy enough its still by far the most realistic we have thus far😅 about like flying on Google earth
Yes, and green valley's too. Check a documentary on Afghanistan and you will find out what an interesting land it is thanks to their rivers basins and mountains.

@Andre Celeste what color settings are you using inside DCS? Are you using ReShade?
second pick in default DCS in certain situations. NO ReShade!

the first time that DCS makes something MAP serious

Sooo whats this server that isn't broken?😂 would sure like to play one that doesn't crash 5+ times a day😒
Great Video, I like that Afghanistan Map out as I might be one of the only Real Afghans who plays DCS World , so now I can Fly in my Home country :)
So cool! Thanks for sharing 😀 hope you enjoy the map in DCS World
I may be buying this map... But in the future. Still ecpkiring South Atlantic, Kola and Sinai.
I’m loving Sinai. Beautiful map.
I really do hope ED considers adding some of Soviet/Russian the airbases in the north of the region. Lots of Soviet and post-Soviet activity there.
This is the only DCS map that scares me because it seems danger can come from anywhere. So that's why I like it 😊
I fly the apache and the f18 in dcs and I love this map looks and runs awesome. Always remember it can only get better
Didn't the map discount link in the description. Am I dumb?
i just cant get over how the full map will be over 300 gb
for just the map
So A, when you say “we”, do you have a team, or is it just Petrovich?

Kola.
Is that official instruction from ED to install BOTH Afghanistan and the Southwest map?
